Update on my cousin's daughter(so my second cousin)- Isabella is 28, she had chemo which shrunk the tumor to a 0 and they removed the surrounding tissue. She is doing well. Just recouperating from all of it. Prognosis is very good for her.8

Annie you have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your parents. It's like they say on the airplane, if the cabin loses pressure that you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you help others put on theirs5

Yes and yes.
I also trained to be a fitness trainer ... took all the courses, and did some practical work in a couple gyms, but I was also taking my Bachelor of Education at the time, and couldn't fit the number of practical hours in to officially complete the fitness trainer course.

Michele- what was on the soba noodles? Were they cold or warm?
I had them cold when I was in Japan and really liked them. Make them at home once in a while.

Time to go walk the wetlands- will be nice. 20degrees colder than yesterday. That is great beings there is no shade for the entire hour walk. Sometimes a breeze, sometimes not.2

Gel pens - I usually get these in discount stores or department stores. I like the metallic and glitter ones but some of the plain ones are nice too.
Alcohol pens - these are fat pens and often found in art and craft shops.
I'll also use Bic and Sharpie pens - especially the fine ones. I pick them up on sale wherever I can find them.

I've been reading, but, as usual, am behind on posting! Hope you don't mind the catch up! And this is only stuff I remember..... sorry...
Lanette, hubby worked at Home Depot for awhile, his ease into retirement job. I asked him about cutting various stuff and he said that that plastic was a bit no-no as it could melt onto the blade. The blades are quite expensive to replace. He also said that pressure treated lumber was also a no-no as the chemicals used in the pressure treating process would eat the blade! Now, we are in Canada, but I assume they follow the same basic rules.
Annie, I hope you get some good feedback/answers at the meeting about your mom. Is there any type of state covered help that you can get? Someone to come in and even just sit with your folks so that you can get out for a few hours of respite care would be good, even better if it can be someone to come in and cook a meal or help your mom with a shower or bath or other self care.
Barbara, Annie looks like a real sweetie! And she's certainly not afraid of Jake! Bonus!
Tracey, I do hope your cousins son has had his surgery. Wishing them all a speedy recovery, glad it wasn't any worse (sounds like it was bad enough!) How fortunate that that other vehicle saw them and was familiar enough with the area to know that they were going to be in trouble!
Heather, thank you for the quick tour of France! You do post marvelous photos! Glad you are back home and that the trip went reasonably well.

Housekeeping stuff in spoiler.Housekeeeping: Not to my mother's standard, but WAY better than hubby's mom or even our son and daughter in law! Laundry gets done when the washer gets to a certain level, we just put our dirty laundry into the washer, I don't bother separating anything. I do some separating when it comes to putting stuff in the dryer as I do have some "hang to dry" things. Don't have a clothesline, or really anywhere suitable for one sadly. Bedding gets changed once a week. Vacuuming usually gets done once a week, but am finding that now we are pet free, I can go two weeks, although our bathroom gets pretty fluffy by then. We have 3 full bathrooms and 1 powder room. Our ensuite bath and the powder room get cleaned every week, the other two I alternate and really they are just like powder rooms as we don't use the bathtub/shower in either of them. The bathmat gets changed every 6 weeks or so. It does hang over the shower door when not in actual use, so does have a chance to dry between uses. Kitchen really should be a daily thing, and for the most part it's clean, I just don't always get to the handwashing as often as I sometimes should. We do have a dishwasher and it gets used, but there are some things that I won't/can't put in there.
I think that's enough for now! lol I really am enjoying having breakfast with y'all (loving that word too, btw!), but that means I'm not reading it at night on my computer and I don't like commenting while on my tablet. I'm often getting ready to head out the door too, so that creates time management issues! lol
You'd think that being retired would mean I don't have time management issues, but apparently there are. I did skip the gym this morning, got sucked into a wormhole on my tablet and just really lost interest in working out. Oh well, got the bathrooms done and the mattress pad is in the dryer right now, decided it needed a wash.

When I was suddenly thrown into a carer role 5.5 years ago, the first thing I did was to research, research, research.
I researched traumatic brain injury and I researched care options.
After my husband had been in hospital quite a while, they wanted to send him home and thought that I would just drop everything and care for him. Nope! I was having none of that. I insisted on a full-time carer for him. He was 100 days in hospital, and then we had a full-time carer for him for the next 4 months, and part-time carers for the next 3 months.
Because of the severity of my husband's traumatic brain injury, it is very possible that he will develop dementia as he ages. The transitition into dementia will be a bit difficult to see because he exhibits a number of the dementia symptoms because of his brain injury. However, in preparation for the distinct possibility that at some point his symptoms will worsen, I'm taking courses and attending seminars on dementia. I'm also familiarising myself with the resources out there.

1 potato cubed boiled, 1/4 cup wild rice, 2 mushrooms, 1/8 of a yellow onion, 2 oz of kielbasa sausage, 3 cooked jumbo shrimp cut up, 4 cups water, 2 tsps of chicken bouillon paste, Old Bay and pepper. Its simmering and I will add a glug of half & half with a bit of cornstarch mixed in to thicken it a wee bit. Total comfort food. I will probably get three bowls worth.🤗💖

Lisa - I've looked up videos on the clay. If Edie still has the Fymo I bought her, we can definitely have a go! Thanks for the inspiration.
Had a lovely quiet day. Two loads of laundry. Tiny bit of shopping. Did sandwich lunch and duck leg dinner with asparagus and fresh peas. Didn't get around to hair washing.
I ordered 10 pink and white tulip bulbs tonight. We will lift the geraniums from our big pot, trim them down, and see if they stay alive over winter in the shed. Then plant daffodil bulbs I saved from this spring, and the tulips underneath. I hope they don't do their best flowering when we are away in late April/May. Most things are early here.
It's the only gardening I do all year, but gives us such pleasure, as it's just outside our dining room window. I might stick a few violas on top for winter colour.

Afternoon, y'all, from sunny Arkansas, not at all October-ish today...
Took my bad self into town after noon to pick up one thing for Corey and to go ahead and go to the thrift store to pick up a couple of crafty things to work with. He's not fond of thrift stores, so I try to go without him. Which I did... and then I hit Hobby Lobby. Well, of course, they had all the clay and clay tools at 40% off, so I broke my brain trying to figure out final amounts in my head. I always forget my phone has a calculator, plus I was talking to Kelsey on the phone as I made my way around. She was encouraging me to spend more, horrible child... In the end, I walked out for under 50 bucks, and that was a minor miracle. I wanted to buy it all...
Evie - I feel like I'm spreading the gospel of "y'all," to the masses here... It's a lovely, graceful way to refer to others, and it always makes me smile.
Heather - Be careful! The 3D nature of clay, along with the colors, is... addictive. All those things I didn't play with much as a child because I had my head stuck in a book...
Pizza for dinner - My try at focaccia bread with garlic and Italian herbs in the dough yesterday turned out quite yummy, so we're using it as the base for pizza toppings for dinner tonight. I already have a few things pre-cooked, like a few mushrooms in white wine for mine, bacon and hamburger for him... Corey's in finishing up the prep for him, like onions and peppers, etc., and then we'll make our own. Mine will be significantly smaller!
This is Corey's fresh tomato for his pizza, too - He threw plastic over his vines last week to keep them safe from the cold, and the tomatoes have just gone wild under there. The entire tomato was that same beautiful red, but the camera just couldn't adjust for the sun bouncing off the one side, which is why it looks orange.

Evie - Thanks for pointing that out. The employees at Home Depot who cut the plastic roofing panels for me just used the black handled heavy duty shears they had in their toolbelts, they didn't use the saw. Probably what they used to cut strapping. When I got the panels home, Roger and I took similar shears and cut them to fit. Now I'm wondering if the manager at the local HD misunderstood and thought I meant running them through their large saw? Not a biggie. Roger came by yesterday afternoon and if I still need them will run into town with his pickup.
Barbara - I don't know how I missed your earthquake experience. Just wow! Don't blame you for taking the ferry and avoiding the roadway.
Lisa and Machka and Michele - neat that you had personal training experience or were personal trainers! We are so lucky to have you in this group.
That ZOE video talked about the benefit of using heavy weights to achieve muscle fatigue (stimulating growth) faster v. lighter weights (easier on the joints) with more reps to achieve similar muscle fatigue. They mentioned doing 30 or 40 reps with the lighter ones ....I was assuming at once.... and I wondered if that's better than doing two or three sets of 8 or 10 reps. Would there be a difference/benefit? Does it matter? The Strong Women Stay Young plan breaks it into sets and also mentions increasing weight gradually until that last set is really a challenge. That's probably good advice. Avoiding injury is paramount for me.
Lisa - I liked that 3-3-3 idea.
Machka - good for you learning about dementia right now.
Dr. Matt sent an email this morning and mentioned the Migrating Motor Complex. I had never heard of it. This is why docs and nutritionists say to wait 3 to 4 hours between meals and don't snack. I thought it was just to keep calories under control. Here's more info:

Annie: These questions you are asking are spot on and very reasonable. I am glad your Mom is doing okay. Unfortunately we didn't have much luck with social services. Maybe your state has more to offer or social services knows of some good home care agencies in town or some good private aides. The ALS Association had a support group we attended virtually. The virtual support group was helpful.
Debbie: Hoping for the very best for Isabella. 30 is young!

I am crying every day so Monday I have a zoom appointment to speak with a grief counsellor that interests me. She is in England. I liked her website and she is willing to schedule people for once a month which I think is enough. Some counsellors want you to come every week. Financially and time wise that is too much for me. I am feeling less tired from the aftermath of the COVID. I hope to go back to knitting this week end. I was suppose to foster a dog family but I am told that will be at the end of the month.
Mostly going along okay. Enjoying the cooler weather!

Rosemarie - I'm sorry that you're crying every day, and so pleased that you're getting counseling that you need, and at a level that is appropriate for you. Depression is no joke, and addressing it is so important.
Lanette - Regarding how, how many, how fast, etc. with light weights, I would never advise that many repetitions. The thought of 30 to 40 reps with any weight disturbs me as I've never met a human being who can maintain safe weight manipulation consistently with that many repetitions. By 20, you're sliding around the edges and getting sloppy. That's why you take a break, reset your mind, then do another clean set.
You must always keep in mind that no matter what weight you're working with, you're also working joints, bursae, cartilage, etc., that are hinging those muscles. In older people, those joints may already be worn or arthritic. I would never use more than 15 repetitions, no matter what you're working with in terms of weight. I tend to work 12 reps. Once you can lift the weight 12 repetitions, then you add a second set and don't go past three sets. If you can easily do three sets, you can start increasing your weight.
Growing muscles is seldom a problem for women unless you're into bodybuilding, you're just trying to get your strength to where you want it, so working to fatigue is always the goal with strength building.
I would also suggest that you not do the same exact weightlifting every day. Give your muscles a day in between at least to repair. I would also change up the lifts you're doing from one session to the next to prevent wear and injury. So resistance bands on Tuesday and free weights on Thursday, and body-weight exercise on Saturday, like crunches, plies, squats, lunges, and so on. Cardio and walking should be on the days in between, and one full rest day a week.
All this is advice, not instruction. Someone else noted that the best exercise or eating program is the one that you'll stick to... and you know what my most-noted advice is - start small and add small increments. You're just trying to be a little better than the time before...

Went to Ollie’s so didn’t get my steps in. I had a 15% off coupon but forgot my phone. I thought they could bring up the coupon at the register but they can’t. So went home and got my phone. Was certainly worth it for $7. I usually get around 7-9,000 steps but I won’t today. Oh well

Made more rice krispie bars for vince, mainly because I have marshmallows I want to use. Also made a crochet towel topper. I’m experimenting with a different pattern. Almost have it down.
Off to take a shower and then maybe watch some TV.
