And today is::
I am going to try to make a difference today by finding a sheep, giving it a hug, while eating wild chocolate and hugging my stuffed sheep, then going home to watch animated tv shows. 🤪6 -
margaretturk wrote: »Rebecca I understand why you pushed for no floaties. I taught swimming lessons in my younger days. We would not allow floaties in lessons because it gives them a false sense of security. I would rather if a parent feels they need something like that is to have them wear a life jacket. A life jacket could save their life. Floaties not as likely.
That said you did the right thing by honoring DDI. Also getting Atheana comfortable by getting her face in the water and blowing bubble is where I would start with a child just learning to swim. The most important thing is both of you enjoying the water together. Sounds like you did.
Barbie Because I got DrewB during the pandemic I took an online training course from Small Dog Academy. It has gotten mixed reviews. What I liked most about it was they only used positive reinforcement. If you know what your goals are there are also many good you tube videos on dog training. I stayed away from the ones that used shock collars, you need to be the alpha in the relationship, or punitive methods. I also joined Pet Summit that has many free workshops. They will push you to buy the workshop but you do not have too. The time you can watch them free is limited.
I only listen to the talks I am interested in. The last one that helped me was a dog homeopath. She gave the remedies for vomiting and for diarrhea. We have had moments with DrewB having these ailments. We have a store close to us called Taylor Made that sells the remedies and I put them in my first aid kit. I bought six remedies and it was half the cost of one vet visit. I will use my judgment if faced with having to use these. Just like with people not everyone is comfortable with alternative treatments for dogs. I have also learned after watching these videos to be careful applying some of their ideas.
I remind myself I know my dog the best and whether it is conventional or alternative medicine I now proceed with caution and do research before I decide what to do unless it is an emergency. I do this for me too!.
Well it was a vest type thing with arm flow ties built into it. The chest part has flotation built in and it clasps in the back. It was definitely very tight on her! I told her that when I was her age, my grandma also taught me to swim. We were vacationing on the Oregon coast at a hotel pool and the parents had gone golfing. My grandma took us kids all down to the pool and I had my waist life preserver, and a vest one too. My grandma looked at me and said, "get all that crap off"! Then she taught me a little in the shallow end, finally just throwing me in the deep end.😂. The next day my mom was on pool detail, and I promptly jumped into the deep end, giving my mom a heart attack! My grandma casually announced, " oh I taught her to swim yesterday".💖. I can float like my grandma too. Just bob with my hands up and my legs still. I used to freak out ladies at the pool at the clothing optional resort because they would just assume I was on a pool noodle. I don't need no floatie, I got two right here and I would hug my chest, then we'd all laugh.😂

Good morning, ladies.
Tracey, hope you are able to find a doctor. That is such a concern. Is your retiring doctor able to make any recommendations? My sister and brother-in-law recently moved to Edmonton from a lake lot north of the city. They have just recently found a new doctor that setup a practice in the Bonnie Doon area which is perfect for them as they live on the southside. Had a first meet and greet with him and are very pleased. They are both diabetic so finding a doctor was essential.
Lanette, yes the sour heads are like sauerkraut. They can be quite expensive to buy compared to a head of cabbage. I think I paid $12 for each small head and I have seen them priced at over $20 each. Cabbage rolls are something I make for special occasions like Christmas, Easter or family gatherings. Anyone who has ever made them knows they are very time consuming to make but my family and friends certainly enjoy them when I include them in a dinner I make.
Lucy continues to be such a delight and has settled in so well with our family. She is still very close to me and I suggested just recently that DH start taking her outside himself during the day for a walk around the yard. He has started doing that but she just goes for a few minutes then is anxious to get back in the house. He’s going to keep doing it…..just taking both dogs for a short walk…then back in. She is finally housetrained and lets me sleep in until about 7:00am which is perfect….no more early morning outings. I think she needed more outings before because she was nervous. Now she is comfortable here and knows it’s her home.
Saw some beautiful bohemian waxwing’s this morning feeding on our crabapple trees that are on one end of our yard. Quite a few crabs are left on the trees so will give them lots to eat. We never see these birds during the summer as they tend to migrate further north but always come back and stay for the winter.
Enjoy the day ladies.

Rebecca – sounds like you’re having a wonderful time.
On my way back from my walk stopped to talk to one neighbor. Found out her husband has been on hospice for the last year. No wonder I haven’t seen her or him out! He’s at home, on a feeding tube, can’t speak, is only getting 9oz of nutrition/day. She has hospice come in once/day. His organs are starting to shut down. I feel so bad for her. Her son comes every weekend.
Ginny – glad the marker is stable
barbie – I love ebooks! That’s really the only way I go about reading. Wish there were more ebooks, tho. I’m signed for Libby, Hoopla, and the library down in FL
‘
Annie – have a great lunch.
Kim – you sneak!!!! Sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do
Rita – at this point, I don’t care if all we get for the coins is face value! To those suggesting we save them for PJ, trust me, he’s going to be getting a good trust!

Margaret, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with dog training and health. You are a great resource.
Annie, when we changed banks it was a nightmare getting all the automatic deposits and withdrawals set up. I had to make a list of all of them, research how to contact them, research the account numbers and other details and then tackle them one at a time. It was hard work and took a long time and was a big headache, but having a list of information was helpful. Do not be discouraged, like all big tasks, you can do it, one bite at a time. Bite off the task, not calorie laden snacks. I get up and walk around in between tasks.
Michele, my father had coins that may or may not have value. I took one look at them and decided that finding a buyer was more trouble than I wanted to deal with so they are in the safe deposit box and may very well stay there and end up in the hands of my heirs. If I needed the money to live on, that might spur me to sell them, but since I don't, need the money, I just don't want to be bothered.
I have been getting fewer steps since Annie came but I feel much more active from all the up and down and back and forth doing stuff with her. I have remind myself that that step count is one one measure of exercise.
Homemade chicken soup and rice for lunch today. MMMMMMMMMM

Michele - It is interesting how words frame the same thing differently - I was talking to my counselor and called what I was doing manipulation, you called it "sneak" ; my counselor called it orchestrating for the greater good. I am owning the title of Mother Orchestrator. And I here by knight Annie as Parent Orchestrator.

Afternoon from squidgy, damp Arkansas, my peeples...
Rain today rain tomorrow, a lovely, relaxed, lazy weekend continues to stretch out in front of us. My Friday night dinner of shrimp fried rice was wonderful... using the rice left over from Thursday night, plus a little sesame oil and spices. Because I was making it, I was able to control what went into it, and still got really close to some of my favorite Chinese restaurants' versions of same. Then this morning, what I didn't eat of that (I ate all the shrimp, of course... ) was the base for Corey's brunch scramble of fried rice and ground beef. Very yummy with Kung Pao sauce... Love stretching three cups of rice to serve in three different meals! And I can't remember who said they loved basmati as well, but I'm seriously happy with it.
Tracey - It was good to see your post, and Egg seems to be fine - if a titch unhappy about the rain...
Machka - It seems your reaction to the essential oils has finally faded, pleased for that, and I'm sure you are too. I thought of Rhody instantly when I saw the "Black Cat Day," on Rita's lists. I love those lists! They always seem to apply to one of us, if not more...
Rebecca - Such wonderful pics of your grands... and the pics of grandpa, grandma and big sis...
Vickie - So glad to see you back! Sorry about the house payment - such a jolt.
Heather - Love the pics of the girls, hope your creative afternoon is fun. I have to agree on the Freecycle, though I'm finding that it's just as satisfying to drag it to Goodwill to serve a good cause. When I went into town Thursday to do a little shopping, I dropped off yet another trunk full of dishes, kitchen gadgets we never use, the toaster we never use, and so on. As you've said, the more I get rid of, the better I feel.
Carol - What a lovely compliment, thank you so much! I worry that I'm sharing too much of the things I'm working with here... but I love seeing Heather's pieces, and part of that is because I know how much they mean to her. These pieces I'm working with are a large part of who I am at the moment, and Corey and y'all are pretty much the only ones who see them, so I'll keep inflicting them on you.
Kylia - I'm sorry about the crappy review - the only response available is simply to cite your policy, which you followed to the letter, but it doesn't erase the unfairness of her review.
Ginny - So good to see you back, pleased the tests showed expected results and that you're happy with them.
Allie - Sorry the night out wasn't what you'd hoped. I just don't go anymore and don't miss it. I'm too short to see out of or over a crowd of people, and it's no longer worth it to me. Throw in the ambient noise, where I can't hear anyone, and it's just misery. You're tougher than I am to go in the first place, and to stay is even tougher.
Annie - Glad to see you taking Kim's post to heart. Just like exercise and eating changes, you have to start sometime, and now is the best time. And, like the old adage, just take it one bite at a time, honey child.
Michele - I'm so pleased to see the lines of communication with Brian are beginning to open.
Just a quick pic of Corey's harvest from the garden last week... Not sure if the remaining tomatoes can survive the cold snap that comes with tomorrow's rain...
Later, y'all,
Love, Lisa

Hi Gals,
Annie- I have had a similar problem with my mom on the bills, of course, it has some differences. But what I did was get a old fashion paper address book. I found one at Staples – it’s a chain of business/home stationary supplies – not sure what is in your area. And then I used it to begin to collect data. So for example who is the cable TV/internet supplier - I just unplugged her router and told her it was down and I needed to call the company – because my mom is hearing impaired (especially without her hearing aids- which she would prefer to not wear) I got her to give me the company name, phone number, web address and her account number - I then called and told her I would play around and see if I could fix it while I was on hold. Well I did fix it…. Lol… I just plugged it back in. I told her that it was fixed. Then I logged into the company web page and made an account to get in and manage her account myself. I have been working on my list for about 2 years now and have gotten it pretty complete. Because of the hearing impairment and the fact she hates to wait on the phone, I can leverage those things to get what I need to get access.
My managing many things for my mom requires me to keep my life as organized and streamlined as possible in order to free up time for managing another household. I am no where near good at it but keep listening for suggestions of what others do and trying stuff that even seems possible.
Love ya all,
Kim in N. California
Well done!!
When my husband had his accident 5.5 years ago, I had access to about half our bills and things ... and had to get access to the other half.
He was in a coma, so I couldn't consult with him ... so I pulled out every trick in the bag to get access to everything. In the end, I think there was only one thing I didn't have access to, and it didn't matter much. I think I just let it expire.
I was very glad I worked with computers and had taken courses in computers and knew people who were more skilled than I in computers!!!

I'm hoping I can get coverage for Thursday afternoon when I ride horseback. I haven't decided whether Dad can watch Mom for a bit or not. Maybe I need someone to watch both Mom and Dad. Mom mostly naps on the couch, or reads or watches TV so unless she is hungry, she is easy. It's dad that won't stay within his limits.

From what you've told us, your dad expects your mom to get up and do what she did before ... I'm not sure if I would be confident leaving her in his care.
You could tell the health care worker that both parents need watching, and tell your dad that the health care worker is there for your mom ... if he objects to being watched.

Regarding the rash - it is better, but not completely gone. It eases up nicely for a day or two, and then flares up again. Not as bad as it was in the first week, but annoying. It has also migrated down my arms. Again, not as bad as what was on my face, neck and chest in the first week, but annoying. And very itchy.
I'm not sure why it keeps flaring up and spreading. But I just did a load of laundry with liquid sensitive skin detergent, so I'm hoping that helps.
Regarding e-books - I have accessed several through Kindle/Amazon and one through Libby just the other day. I've been pleasantly surprised at the number of free books available!!
I still prefer an actual book in my hand, but it's nice to have the online options.
I'm reading Mary Higgins Clark these days.

All went well with the girls this afternoon, but Bea wasn't in the mood for painting. She abandoned her effort and just played games on my tablet. Edie stuck with it, and composed a great geometric abstract, with the help of masking tape. I painted another holiday picture, in a different style, and DH did a wash and pen picture of Venice.
This morning they had both gone to do cycling time trials in the pouring rain. Most kids cried off. Max also did it, complaining all the way. Tomorrow morning it is cyclo-cross! Last week it was a mud bath, and we have had another week of rain. It's supposed to be super wet tomorrow.
I always enjoy Edie's chatter. We have both resolved to try out my old pastel sets next time. I showed her a couple of Degas's pastels. DH and I are thinking of repainting our bedside tables with some art work, like the furniture at Charleston, where the Bloomsbury Group hung out, near here. We both thought we would try a naked lady. Could be fun!
UTI still hovering. Feeling a bit flat, but seeing the girls was cheering.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Heather- it sounds like a fun time was had by all.
Lisa- reason I went is because my friend Michael was playing and my friend's Sue and Bob were up from N.C. and it's her brother and a friend that was playing last night. And I always always wear earplugs. If I know im going somewhere ..I can hear the conversation, and drowned out alot of the background noise.
Believe you me I usually don't go out to those things to much either.
I did a whole bunch of nothing today..3 -

Well, got Vince to finish putting away the pool chairs, etc. I swear, more and more I feel I have to push him to do things. Also, got a christmas tree up
phew! I almost parked in the garage but then I remembered that I couldn’t Wish they’d get the part already
Called the lady who is making the quilts for me. It’s only been over a year that she’s had the pieces. Anyway, she said she’d have it done by the time we went to FL, so I told her we were leaving in Jan. Really, we’re not going until Feb. but I want to be sure I have them.
You have no idea how I’m so afraid that I’m going to be hurt big time again by Bryan. Fear is really hard. I’m just going to tread lightly
M – I really like Mary Higgins Clark
Making these towel toppers for the lady who took care of my father. I have 5 that I can send her. I’m trying to send her ones that don’t have any writing on them.
Well, off to make tonights. I find that I can usually make one a night.
Tomorrow I'll probably walk to Food Lion to get more potatoes for Vince and also these donuts that are on sale. I normally don't buy stuff like this, but since we bought the cake for the guy who returned to bowling, if I spend $2 more in the bakery dept I get $2 off my next purchase.

Almost forgot to tell ya. I thought Vince had lost my keys because I thought the last time they were used was when he drove to bowling Wed. night. Anyway, I found them in my "Green Room" craft bag. I'd totally forgotten that I volunteered at the Green Room Thursday. Anyway...guess what I found?
MY MAHJONGG CARD!!! I didn't throw it away like I thought. I bet what happened is that I put it in that bag, did the craft in the car on the way to see Jess thinking that I might play in the car or at her place.

who is very happy. Now to be sure that I don't re-lose it5 -
Today was a good day. Slept in, and then we drove to husbands moms place. She is 90 years old, lives with her niece and husband in the downstairs with a kitchen. She confessed that most likely in a year she will be completely blind. Doctor has said its just age related, nothing they can do. She fixed a nice lunch of creamy chicken pasta, corn, beans and rolls. I helped as much as she would let me. We had a nice visit for a couple hours. I love her so much. She was the break room lady at the bank I worked at, so I have known her longer than I have known her son!💖
We then wandered around trying to find a game store that husband wanted to check out. Finally found it though. Then after that we promptly wandered around trying to find the exit onto the freeway we needed. Portland Oregon has changed so! Its not my Portland anymore.😥. Got back to sons at 3 pm and son said they were passing on the swimming, but we had a nice time until 7:30 pm when husband decided we needed to rest at the hotel. He had a terrible headache, but he took Tylenol just now, plus he's taking a bath. Earlier we shared a Chinese food meal, that husband went and got, while granddaughter and I played with Play doh! When we left she gave me one of her books to read at the hotel. I told her I would return it to her when we meet them at Elmers for breakfast💖😁. I don't think she knows we'll be driving back home from there.😥💖. I miss her already.

Walked the wetlands yesterday- met up with a friend's husband who was out walking their dog so finished walking with him. Nice to have someone to chat with instead of the walk alone. Sometimes I like the quiet but sometimes it is nice to chat with a person and not just the birds and ground squirrels.
Walked last night at the park with my friend. Hit just over 18,000 steps.
Walked MIL's dog this morning-just 30min walk. Was supposed to meet up with my friend again and our zumba teacher to walk the wetlands under the full moon- they both canceled on me. I didn't want to go by myself- it was an event for the wetlands so other people would be there but I wanted to go with friends. Oh well.4 -
Nice (but cold) 20 km bicycle ride today ...
And then a great (but colder) 5.6 km walk!

Heather - I should journal about it. I also have a couple of people I can talk to when I think about it.
I hope your UTI completely leaves soon. I’ll listen to that Podcast.
Lanette - let me know if you watch those videos.
I’m thinking of buying a small freezer it would be good to have when there are sales on meat.
Walking 10 minutes after meals is such a great thing to do. I remember my Dad always walked after supper.
I walked a lot the last two weeks and felt better than I had in years. I need to keep it up. We are in snow and ice mode already though.
Annie - I had to laugh out loud about Teddy communicating better than your ex. It’s sad though really.
Kim - we had to do things like that with my Mom when she started showing signs of Alzheimer’s. We were very fortunate to know most of her business because it had just been transitioned from Dad to her after he passed.
My Mom was going to town every day 3 or 4 times a day, the cost of this was more than she could afford. One day she called me complaining that her car was broke down and my brother, a mechanic, wasn’t looking at it. She said he was too busy. I called my brother and he told me that he knew what was wrong. She had run out of gas in the driveway. He went on to explain that she still had two weeks before she would receive money and only had a tiny bit of money. He was trying to help her save some money by keeping her at home.
Shortly after that we had to take her licence away completely because she wasn’t safe to be driving.
Alzheimer’s is such a terrible disease.
Allie - it’s a shame your evening out had a damper of poor service. Maybe they will be better prepared for the number of people.
When my hips were so sore I bought a memory foam mattress pad to soften the bed and it helped a lot.
Rebecca - I love seeing the pictures of you and Leigh with the grands.
Joy - my doctor is retiring because she hasn’t been able to find doctors to keep her clinic running for about 8 years now. She had given some suggestions on how to find a doctor but none have panned out yet. I am quite concerned.
Bonnie Doon would be a fair distance for me. There are none accepting patients in Leduc.
Barbie - it sounds like Annie is settling in well.
It’s a nice reminder that step count is not the only consideration for activity.
Lisa - I love seeing what everyone is working on. I don’t find it an infliction at all.
Heather - I love the idea of you and DH painting your nightstands. That would be a lot of fun.
Debbie - Sorry you didn’t get the group walk around the wetlands.
Our eldest and granddaughter were out today. Michaela was bored so I suggested she make a scarecrow. I did the cutting, she chose the colours and did all the gluing alone.
After they left I watched another homework video. It is called Gord Downie’s The Secret Path, it was his last album, there is a graphic comic style film that accompanies it. I enjoyed it, but I especially enjoyed the discussion panel afterwards.
I think I should go to bed soon. I am feeling like munching. If I’m in bed I’ll resist.
Oh I forgot, my youngest daughter and two friends went back to their early 20’s last night and went out to a bar for Halloween.
They are always so creative with their costumes. I miss these pictures coming yearly.

I've read of people disabling their parent's vehicles in some way so they couldn't drive. I hid all the keys for our vehicles from my husband until I was sure he wouldn't drive.

Yes, so sad about Matthew Perry.
Our clocks went back last night. I took a Nytol and slept an extra half hour. Feeling some energy returning.
Poured with rain last night. Wind. Thinking about the girls on the cyclo-cross.
Those of you dealing with dementia. My brother had to do all sorts of devious things to prevent his MIL from driving. He got conflicting advice from the police on this. One officer was very supportive, another said it was illegal. IMHO there should be some statutory test for people who are showing signs. Cars are a lethal weapon.
My heart is with you all. So hard.
