WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR OCTOBER 2023

Hi, I'm late to the party. I would like to join this group. You can call me Hope. Hoping for a better future, lol.
SW=290 lbs., (June 2023) I gained 60 lbs. of water weight from heart failure in 2 months. I have taken it off since then.
Next, goal weight is 199 lbs. (onederland!)
October 1: 205 (Happy fall y'all.)
October 8: 207
October 15: 212 (I had my heart vest on; this weighs 5 lbs., so I weighed 207)
October 22: 209 (I had more sugar this week, not pop. This is what the increase in weight was from.)
October 29:
October 31:
EW=130 lbs.
My goal is to lose 2 lbs., the week of 10/30—11/5/23
I plan to do this by exercising 5x a week, walking, & eating cooking homeade soup and salad. I’m still not drinking pop for the most part; I will at a scary Halloween movie and purposely order the kid's popcorn and pop for portion control. Hope it is a good movie. I plan to see it this weekend.
I was trying to quit pop for good. I drank some Coke today on 10/27/23. After drinking water and green tea for so long, I still like Coke, yet it left me feeling thirsty after I drink it. I drank water right after that…One goal at a time.
Good to meet everyone.

Good morning, from a bright, still morning in my neck of the woods. It’s a joy after the wet stormy weather of the last week.
Just catching up before I get ready to go to Latin Study Group at 10 am. With 7 new members, it’s all go.
Have a great day.

Thursday’s gratitude: Joe bought me two bales of straw for the side yard compost pile walls. Chiropractor and good weather for playing in the dirt.
Wednesday’s gratitude: Joe willing to take me to Medford for Mohs Surgery, even though he’s concerned having the dogs along will be a lot of trouble. A line dancer does house/pet sitting, Joe agreed that since I’ve been acquainted with her for years he’d be comfortable having her stay in our home. When the date is known (January?) if she’s available, fine, if not, we’ll just have to find a dog friendly motel. T volunteered to take me for the extraction, she’ll enjoy the shopping opportunity. D offered to be backup for either excursion. I feel so very very blessed.
Lanette re your $1/bale hay history made me smile. We paid $15/bale for straw today at Del Cur Supply. Lane has been graded and partially graveled. Wider but really muddy. Waiting for the additional truckloads of rock that were to be here Tuesday… Wednesday… Today… ;} “no hurry in Curry (county). ;}
Margaret I loved visiting Shaw’s Garden with my aunt Margaret. Was my first experience of a tactile/scent garden for the blind.
Barbie yours about acceptance. The dog trainers I follow say “train the dog in front of you” meaning not the dog you wish was in front of you someday but the dog you have now in this moment. When I accept this, things go better and everyone is less frustrated.

It worked but it’s cooled now and so I’m signing off to go to bed instead of the kitchen.

Yippee Skippy Friday!
Small changes in choices across our lives seems to be making big changes in our lives! I am proud of all of us.
Welcome Hope- Several of us have quit pop (soda). It has been 15ish years for me. The bubbles hurt my belly and I don't like drinking my calories. It sounds like you are making some wise decisions though. Water after soda-check. Small serving-check. Small changes can bring great results.
Welcome to any other new ladies
Yesterday was hard. Not bad, just hard.My expectations must change. I did get a little snippy with a customer....my bad....I was tired of answering calls on is my unit done....Between people being sick, large parts orders coming in, customers coming in (not a bad thing), lack of assistance from others, I was just done. I told him that I didn't know, but was working on invoices between phone calls and would call him when I knew something (not my better moment). A little later, I called him back to let him know that things were ready and apologized. He said no worries, he runs his own business, and knows how it can be sometimes.i am making progress, but not there yet. To top things off my neck hurt yesterday. Wanted Tylenol, but what we had at work expired in 2021 and 2022. Medicine is one thing I dispose of at expiration date. DH won't touch milk the day after the date on the container, but ignores expirations on meds-shm. Ended up taking migraine meds which helped greatly. Picked up new Tylenol on way home for work.
I didn't feel like putting whole chicken in crockpot yesterday morning even though was thawed. Took the 5 minutes to do it anyway. I am amazed at how much meat really does come off those small birds! Sorry Lanette don't share that with your ladies. We had it with brown rice, gravy, beets, and green beans. Five minutes to plate and eat. Then deboned rest. I have 4 cups ready for something else.
I am doing better with water. Still not great but better. Stretching, magnesium, and potassium have helped hips, legs, and cramps.
Hottubs I never use to think about them being "people soup" until I got my own. Now I really prefer to only get in mine as I know how well it is cared for and what cooties I have. No one else has been in it for over 5 years, so it is all me.
I better get out of said hottub and get to stretching.
Much love, support, appreciation, and healing thoughts!

Welcome to new posters to this fast moving friendly group of ladies!
Barbara ~ You are blessed to have friends who will help you as you go to your medical appointments! Good that Joe has agreed to take you for the Mohs surgery.
Took DH to get cataract surgery yesterday and will take him for follow-up this morning. So glad it's over and with the cataract gone I don't have to worry about his driving with a blind eye.
Carol in GA7 -
Good morning ladies!
Glad MFP got the "Community" feature fixed yesterday. Had some withdrawal symptoms, lol.
Tracey - how long is your cousin staying with you? Maybe you said and I skimmed over it. Glad her son's surgery finally was done and hope the others with injuries are healing OK.
Barbara - happy you are getting back-ups for ride and dog sitting if needed when you journey to Medford. I was going to comment on Corey's "shirtless" photo but didn't want Lisa to think I was a dirty old lady. Maybe she already does, lol. I ran across an old photo of my DH taking a break from splitting and stacking wood - it shows part of the lean-to he constructed on back of the shop for wood storage. I think he and Corey were related. Guys who like to build stuff.
Seems like the retired old geezers around here grow beards - they all resemble each other!
Carol - that's great about your DH getting his cataract surgery done on that eye. What a miracle we can now get our sight back like that.
Kylia - hope you have a better day at work today. Glad the crock-pot chicken turned out OK. I won't tell my girls, lol. One of them has come up lame in the past week. It's Almy - she's too fat, hasn't started laying eggs yet. I think she injured her hip or leg jumping off the roost. She still eats, preens, and can hop around but doesn't wander far from the run. I'm hoping it the leg will heal. At some point she might be destined for a crock-pot if she starts going downhill. Not my crock-pot. I've butchered chickens in the past but never one that I'd named and raised from a chick, so if it comes to that I have friends I could probably give her to.
Hope - sugar is so hard to kick. A trick I picked up recently is to up the protein if you can - eat protein like meat at the beginning of the meal and save sugary and starchy stuff for toward the end. Perhaps you can do that with your Coke, it's worth a try. Sounds like you are making great headway since your heart episode.
I decided to explore the collection behind the driver's seat in the Sube. Found a knit hat and another Gore-tex bucket hat I can wear when walking.... I knew it was around here somewhere. And a pair of yak-tracks and "cleats" I can attach to my shoes for walking on ice just in case I need them. I used to be well-prepared for emergencies years ago when I had to drive miles to work on icy mornings. Since I retired 7 years ago, I guess it's about time to clean that out, isn't it? If it's icy, I luckily can make the choice to just stay home or make the trip after it thaws.
It's 32f right now and I have the thermostat set for 62 and the heat pump keeps running. Gack. I'll tap the the thermostat up in a while - I prefer sleeping in a chilly room. Thankfully we'll have sunshine during the day and I can open all the blinds on the south side of the house and get a lot of solar gain. Seeing that photo of DH and his wood pile reminded me we used to go through a lot of wood with our little woodstove, I'd say it more than paid for itself. Hoping not to have to use it - cut down on the smoke in the house, dirt and mold/fungus (allergy stuff) which rate high on my allergy list. But it's there if I need it for emergencies. In the meantime, bundle up.
Have a wonderful Friday!
Lanette
SW WA State6 -
Good morning ladies!
A fine day so far. Today I have to find the important papers my dad lost. Maybe some general catch up and clean up.
The jacket I ordered for my mom was delivered. It is powder blue fleece and quite soft. It's cropped and boxy so she can wear it in bed. The sleeves are a little long, but they fold back. I hope it works.
I have some stuff to look into for my mom coming home, too. As she gets stronger, I get less worried about that. I bet she thinks she will be cooking again. Or that I will spend my days waiting on her, fixing whatever she wants, whenever she wants, whether she eats it or not. I have to decide where my boundaries are ahead of time.
Welcome Hope! Sounds like you are on
a great track!
Annie in Delaware6 -
Welcome to all of you who are new to the thread! No worries about it being late in October, @barbiecat will put up a link to the November thread late on Oct. 31, and we will all start once more with a clean slate. Glad you're here! Don't worry too much if you don't get tons of friend requests - most of tend to interact just on the thread itself.
Carol - Hope all outcomes are good on your husband's cataract surgery. I can see how it would be a worry when he's driving if only one eye is working!
Kylia - Must have been the day for Lanette's ladies' cluckin' cousins. I tried a recipe for dijon mustard chicken made in a cast iron skillet in the oven last night, mainly 'cause it was something we hadn't eaten before. Ate it with basmati rice with pan sauce and broccoli. the very chilled-out bear...
Barbara AHMOD - Well done on the warm beach towel vs. snacking for comfort! The cold front is supposed to hit this weekend that will take us down to the normal temps for late October and early November. Can't say I'm looking forward to that! I am looking forward to seeing more of Corey working on the deck, but with the cold weather, there will be fewer if any more shirtless days this year... Ah well, I enjoyed it while it lasted. I am a very lucky woman.
Hope - @kiteflyer105 - Welcome! Lanette ( @SophieRosieMom ) puts up an accountability/support post every Monday. You can friend her to send your check-in weights each week, and she posts a reminder. Well done on losing the 60 pounds plus! Losing two pounds per week is a semi-reasonable goal, and I know that simply tracking calories here on MFP has been a significant boost to a number of people's ability to significantly alter their weight loss journey. If you're not already doing so, measuring or weighing your food with a food scale will help open your eyes to how much you are actually consuming daily. You should never trust your eyes for serving/calorie size. Regarding drinking sugared pop - like Kylia, I purely hate to drink my calories, so that helps. But sugar in general is actually an addiction. Withdrawing from it gives you much the same feeling that opioid withdrawal causes. Well worth weaning yourself off of it, as it appears you're doing... What I thought was interesting was that we sensitize to sugar just like a drug, as well. Effectively, the more we eat sugar, the more we want. Scary stuff.
Annie - Sounds like you're feeling better, and feel like things are more under control. I think of you often and hope that when your mom comes home, it will make things easier.
Tracey - Take your time, dear heart. Family comes first, and once you add all the stuff with your cousin's son on top of schoolwork, it must feel like you haven't had time to breathe in a couple weeks! Throw in the emotional uproar, and it's just all exhausting. We'll be here when you get back to us, no worries.
More in a minute...

The sun's been up for an hour here River Valley, but it's hard to tell, as we're still socked in with the clouds from the latest rains. It's 69° (21°C), though, More coming in the early afternoon, supposedly. Weather predictions have essentially become "I'll believe it when I see it" around these parts! That said, they're calling for rain ALL weekend as well as near-freezing temps on Sunday. Ick.
Whoopsie - Took a break to take my good morning call from Corey... and while I was on the phone with him, Egg was making the urky-ack noise that every cat-lover knows. We put her food dish on the hearth in the living room some while back. Basically, we were trying to keep the feral cat from slinking in through the cat door and eating her food. Egg very politely kept the sick-up on the hearth and off the rug, but while I was watching all this and trying to talk to Corey, she started making moves toward eating it, and I got a teensy bit agitated. I don't mind cleaning up, but didn't want HER cleaning it up, because she doesn't have hands and can't use paper towels. Corey was on the phone just laughing himself sick, thereby adding to the uproar. Good grief.
Anyway, other than that little detour, I'm back to my more normal "routine" this morning. Yesterday was all discombobulated. First, y'all were missing in action for nearly three hours! Then Corey slept in to go to the courthouse for jury duty. He was there for a few hours and called me when he headed for work from there. They actually screened him for a jury, but it was for a lawsuit against a guy who had taken $500 to perform a service and then never actually did the job. When they asked Corey if he thought that was a crime, he said "Yes." He works for a landscape services company... So the defense dismissed him.
After that, my pottery class got canceled, as they were making repairs in the room. It was a mixed feeling of relief and disappointment. It's always a huge effort to get myself to go, but I also know it's good for me. So then, since the day was all akimbo, I decided to go ahead and cook dinner. I am trying to cook a little more often these days because on weekdays, Corey leans toward things like oven-fried chicken nuggets or hamburgers and tater tots. Tonight will be hot dogs and tater tots. I needed something a little different.
So last night, I marinated one chicken thigh (for me) and three drumsticks (for him) in dijon mustard and olive oil, seared off the chicken a couple of hours later, sauteed mushrooms and onions in the same pan, added more dijon mustard to the sauce, as well as some chicken broth and some cream to make it, well, creamy, plus thyme and bay. Chicken back in the pan, skin up, in the oven for a half hour. Fairly yummy, and at least it was different. Ate it over rice, plus a little broccoli on the side. I've fallen in love with basmati rice, and could just stand over it and inhale happily. Oddly, it just tastes like any long-grain rice, but the smell is heaven!
For those who are new, you may find a fair amount of "non-diet" food mentioned in this group. We're all at different stages, and many are in maintenance. I maintain my weight through serving size and don't deny myself much. However, whatever your stage, there is always someone who is eating how you want to eat or exercising how you want to exercise, so don't hesitate to ask for or give information on your journey.
Anyway, I've rattled on long enough. Time to get a few things done, then I need to go pick up a couple bits and pieces. Hope it's a good Friday for all!
Love y'all!

Hope, welcome to our friendly community. I found this thread when I was 62 and a veteran of many failed attempts to lose weight. I found answers here especially the one that I have to do this one day at a time for a lifetime. I read this thread every morning while I eat breakfast. I am reminded that healthy eating and exercise are at the top of my priority list. I hope you will keep coming back. A new thread will start to begin the new month.
I walk every morning no matter the weather. Today I got out my warmest coat (also my favorite) because the temps dropped low enough for frost everywhere.
Barbara, I am always chilly so I wear a turtleneck, a long sleeve cotton shirt, and a sweatshirt in the house. Also two knit hats and fingerless knit gloves. I love my furnace and turning it up is a luxury I allow myself the same way other people buy alcohol, restaurant meals, and other treats.

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now? 1. Better financial management, 2. My eyes and cataract surgery, 3. Researching and getting my name on lists of potential places to retire to in 3-4 years.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding. I need to clean the cabinets out. I am planning to start today. Didn’t happen.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust. did not do this.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently. I have accomplished coloring pages, making doctor appointments, calming my nerves by taking some actions I never tried before, and more.
11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward. This is hard for me.
12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today. With everything going on around me and in me this will be hard, but I will pay attention to good news.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing. The obstacles I have cannot be solved by me, but by family members.
14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation. I will have to think on this. I posted pictures of the eclipse that happened here on the Friends Group FB page, and sent some pics to my son and grandson.
15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted. I got up in a thankful mood today so I should be able to do this. The eclipse yesterday couldn’t have gone better.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting. I will color, walk, and meditate-all things that are fun and uplifting to me.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society. Teaching adults computer use provides a positive change in my community.
18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead. My biggest hope for the near future is a holiday without depression and ‘drama’ caused by my family.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future. I think my tenacity will always be helpful to me and others.
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time. This will have to wait as I am not feeling too good today. Fall cold.
21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you. I have been working on this, so this will be in progress for a while. Because I did this, my mother finally called me to see what was up after 3 weeks of missed calls from me.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague. Will do here.
23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize. I will put myself first for care so I can take care of others and my normal tasks.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently. Some of my close family contacted me instead of the other way around, 2. Getting appointments with a cardiologist, and a nephrologist. 3. I am over 2 months sober!
26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face. I need to take a hard look at our budget.
27. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time. I hope to go for a walk and to color today.28. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
29. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
30. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
31. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

On everything that is ‘bad’ I find that if you read the tests they do to deem something ‘bad’ for you, the give huge amounts to animals to see the result. We would never eat enough of the ‘bad’ thing to do us harm unless you eat ONLY that the rest of your life! Anything in excess will make you sick! So everything in moderation is my belief. IMHO

Good morning, ladies.
Was busy yesterday. Made cabbage rolls from 3 sour heads I picked up from No Frills the week before. Sour heads are getting harder to find so was happy to see them. Had just a few for supper and the rest are all tucked away in the freezer. Finally got over reaction to covid shot I got on Monday. Ended up being tired to begin with then fever on day 2 and a hot, itchy rash around the injection site. Next will be the flu shot then I'm all caught up for awhile.
It's chilly here now and was snowing during the night. Need to go to town to pay our taxes but might wait until Monday. Looked at doing it online as that is an option but would have to do it as three different transactions as we have three separate quarters. They make it a bit complicated so I think it is simpler to just write a cheque for the total amount and then it is just one entry in our account books. It's due at the end of the month so have until Tuesday.
Enjoy the day.

Good Friday morning ladies for a CHILLY Napa Valley- was 39 when I got up at 8 am-not sure how cold it was last night. Garden will be over soon if this keeps up- plants did pretty good this year but didn't produce hardly at all. Cucumbers didn't do a thing Tomatoes, got some from a few plants but the others not a one.
Kitten is doing better. Koshu gets to come out of quarantine this afternoon. He has been so lonely in our son's room. We have been taking turns staying in there. His bed is the most uncomfortable thing but because he had his computer on all afternoon and evening and the room is small- it was very warm. Felt really cold when I came out of his room.
Walking the wetlands with my Zumba friends tomorrow evening for a full moon walk- first time our teacher is going with us. Will miss one friend-he has been sick with tonsilitus all week.
Walking the park with another friend tonight after walking the wetlands today. Fridays are iffy with her because of commute traffic. If we get to walk, I call it a bonus. The walk goes by so fast when we are walking together. We get to catch up-don't have time at class. I am so thankful for the friends I have met at that class. It is great to finally say I have more than one friend in this town that I can text and say, hey, you want to walk or what ever. Only took 31yrs.
Time for another cup of tea then med time for Koshu
Have a wonderful Friday ladies!!

My doctor scheduled both of mine so they would be in the same year for the insurance so it cost less for the second one and as a huge bonus, because it was less than six months apart, I was able to get my new glasses adjusted to the new prescription at no cost. The second eye wasn't as bad as the first but bad enough to have it taken care of plus with how fast the first one progressed(from one year where it was just starting to show to the next year's visit where it needed to be removed) , she wanted them both done. I was 48 when I had them done I think3 -

I was trying to quit pop for good. I drank some Coke today on 10/27/23. After drinking water and green tea for so long, I still like Coke, yet it left me feeling thirsty after I drink it. I drank water right after that…One goal at a time.
Good to meet everyone.
I don't drink soda but my husband does. What he has done that helps is we have a SodaStream machine.
With this, he can add a lot less of the soda syrup(or use none at all) and still get his soda fix. Keep cutting back on the amount of syrup each time. Now, store bought sodas are strong for him. We drink a lot of plain seltzer from that.

HUGS!! My suggestion is to set those boundaries before she gets home and STICK to them. DH didn't and now, a year and a half later, she is still demanding that he wait on her-has to go over there twice a day to do things for her that she is more than capable of doing for herself. At first, yes she needed all the extra care but she is long past that but still thinks she deserves it. Sits there, waiting for him to serve her. Won't even eat at the table, only eats in her recliner.

DDIL sent this today.
I had 5 replies to my bakeware. Someone is coming tonight to pick it up. It's outside in the porch. If she doesn't come I will move on to the next person.
I've been watching extreme cleaning videos this afternoon. Not sure why, but I find cleaning and decluttering videos very calming. Amazing what a mess people can get themselves into. Usually a mental health problem. It motivates me to get things done.
Today Clutterbug was talking about Christmas, so I went downstairs and teamed up with DH to assess our supplies, and make a list of what extra to buy for him to make his annual Christmas cake. Enjoyed that.
A restful day. Not entirely over my UTI, but I've had a glass of wine this evening with our homemade pizza. Washed down with lots of soda water.

Well ladies I am caught up. I have really missed you all.Enjoyed our trip and I got to meet several Aunts and a cousin of DH's. It was a nice trip and we were home in time to go to my brothers wedding. Which was interesting as there was a lot of drinking. Just not my thing.
Had a few things at work to get straigthen out, nothing majoy. And then I was home sick yesterday. Today am working 12 hour shift by myself and enjoying the alone part. They are doing floors and walls around my area and have us all blocked off. Makes getting into office a pain, but also keeps people out. But the noise of the machines and the singing are a bit much.
Rebecca--Love the family scrabble board. Looking forward to pictures of you and the 2 grand babies.
Barbie--Welcome to Annie. Our Oscar is also a lab-dachshund mix. He is a cuddler.
Got notice our house payments are going up almost $100 starting next month. Taxes.
Annie--Sending prayers and hugs.
Well have the weekend off and going to take pictures at church again Sunday. Should be about done.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE Where we are expecting snow the next couple days.7 -

I am 55 and lost weight and got in got shape around 48-49, then had cancer and am now fully recovered, it took a few years to get there as I had chronic back pain for a fews years afterward but that totally disappeared (thanks be to God). Someone told me when I entered recovery in 2019 that it took her 3 years after to fully recover (she had the same cancer as me), which was very helpful when I found recovery taking a lot longer than I anticipated. So although I did recover physically it really took a toll on my confidence and I became more socially isolated (covid didn’t help).
So the good news is I have started training for a new career (at 55!) and around March this year I refocused on getting to a place physically that would be better for my health long term. I started at 180lb and am down 19lbs.
I took a four month hiatus but find I am now able to focus again.
I have always got in great shape by weight training, but I am so busy right now I am struggling to get to the gym, so I am focusing on getting at least one 30 minute walk in a day, hopefully two and eating more mindfully.
I would love to have friends to check in with!
Welcome here!
I just recently graduated with a Master's degree, and am finally getting established in a career (at 56!). What are you training for?

Taken me a while to navigate the community sites, oh well
Welcome here!
These forums work more or less like this:
MyFitnessPal has several sections. One section is where we go to enter our exercise and food and to participate on the newsfeed with our friends. Another section is the forum.
The MFP forum contains several subforums or "Categories".
Within each subforum or "Category", there are a whole lot of threads. For example, within the Motivation and Support subforum or "Category", there is a long collection of Women Ages 50+ {month, year} threads. And Barbie starts a new thread each month.
Within each thread, there are lots of posts.
That's how we see it because there is a reasonably decent user interface for us to work with.
However, all the posts from all the threads go into a table in a database behind the scenes (pretty much).

Joy
I haven't had cabbage rolls in ages!!0
