WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR OCTOBER 2023

My dad is driving me nuts again. His hearing aids are out so I can't wake him up without going in his bedroom. I thought we were going to town to pay the electric bill when they opened at 8:00. Now it's nine. If they shut off the power I will be so mad. I tried the doorbell which is very loud, but no response. His car is here, but if he walked he forgot his hearing aids and the checkbook.
I don't mind doing the chores, it's the struggle for control or even just communication that gets me. I was mad at him yesterday because I was sick and couldn't visit Mom. He didn't go either, but he did go to McDonald's.
And we missed the trash pickup yesterday. I feel like the house systems are falling apart, but that's not accurate.
The stupid electric bill requires a PIN to get any info. And of course Dad doesn't have that. Such a mess.

Hi ladies, I am back on the weight loss wagon after taking a break due to Covid and starting school. I feel I have the brain space again to be more mindful.
I am 55 and lost weight and got in got shape around 48-49, then had cancer and am now fully recovered, it took a few years to get there as I had chronic back pain for a fews years afterward but that totally disappeared (thanks be to God). Someone told me when I entered recovery in 2019 that it took her 3 years after to fully recover (she had the same cancer as me), which was very helpful when I found recovery taking a lot longer than I anticipated. So although I did recover physically it really took a toll on my confidence and I became more socially isolated (covid didn’t help).
So the good news is I have started training for a new career (at 55!) and around March this year I refocused on getting to a place physically that would be better for my health long term. I started at 180lb and am down 19lbs.
I took a four month hiatus but find I am now able to focus again.
I have always got in great shape by weight training, but I am so busy right now I am struggling to get to the gym, so I am focusing on getting at least one 30 minute walk in a day, hopefully two and eating more mindfully.
I would love to have friends to check in with!9 -
Welcome Joyfulandactive! I put on loads of weight when I had cancer. Through this group I lost it, and I'm now hoping to lose a little bit of my recent comfort weight.
My friend G sent me a birthday card with a Raoul Dufy painting on it. We saw a whole gallery of his work when we were in Nice. I decided to paint a holiday photo in his style. Here it is.
It's the first time I've used the watercolour brush pens for a whole painting. I must say, I quite surprised myself!

Heather another pretty painting! I like how the yellow accents make it cheerful.
I got the electric bill paid. Yay! And put the whole thing on automatic deduction. Yay! My stress level is recovering. I can do without a lot of things, but I need power and Internet. And Teddy, who was barking at the unseen enemy that had me upset.

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize. I will put myself first for care so I can take care of others and my normal tasks.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding. I need to clean the cabinets out. I am planning to start today. Didn’t happen.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust. did not do this.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently. I have accomplished coloring pages, making doctor appointments, calming my nerves by taking some actions I never tried before, and more.
11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward. This is hard for me.
12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today. With everything going on around me and in me this will be hard, but I will pay attention to good news.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing. The obstacles I have cannot be solved by me, but by family members.
14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation. I will have to think on this. I posted pictures of the eclipse that happened here on the Friends Group FB page, and sent some pics to my son and grandson.
15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted. I got up in a thankful mood today so I should be able to do this. The eclipse yesterday couldn’t have gone better.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting. I will color, walk, and meditate-all things that are fun and uplifting to me.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society. Teaching adults computer use provides a positive change in my community.
18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead. My biggest hope for the near future is a holiday without depression and ‘drama’ caused by my family.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future. I think my tenacity will always be helpful to me and others.
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time. This will have to wait as I am not feeling too good today. Fall cold.
21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you. I have been working on this, so this will be in progress for a while. Because I did this, my mother finally called me to see what was up after 3 weeks of missed calls from me.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague. Will do here.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently. Some of my close family contacted me instead of the other way around, 2. Getting appointments with a cardiologist, and a nephrologist. 3. I am over 2 months sober!
25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now? 1. Better financial management, 2. My eyes and cataract surgery, 3. Researching and getting my name on lists of potential places to retire to in 3-4 years.26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face.
27. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time.
28. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
29. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
30. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
31. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

Long post in spoiler logging my financial history. Skip if you like, but you can learn a lot about me by reading. Thanks for all your support and empathy. I love you ladies! My money management skills were pretty good until my first marriage. All the money I had saved went toward my diamond and wedding rings. Our income was doubled but so were expenses. Two years after marriage, I had had a miscarriage, then a live birth. We waited 4 years while we built a house before having another. We did but the last was a ‘surprise’. I was nursing the youngest at the time and didn’t expect to get pregnant. I just accepted it as Gods will. During this time, the house wasn’t finished as my then DH was doing everything himself. My MDD was born with dislocated hips and was prone to infections, lots of money went to doctors as well as the house. When my last was born, we were still dealing with the MDD’s health issues, then added me having to leave work at 5 months due to sciatica issues that made me fall from sudden pains. Working in a glass plant was dangerous, so falling was much more dangerous. So finances were stretched very quickly during that time. Jump ahead 10 years, we have things caught up, but divorce was happening due to his abuse. We had some money in the saving account, which he promptly took out when he got the papers. He also sold a motorcycle that was mine, he had his Harley, and kept that money too. So I was left with 3 small children a $1000 mortgage, no wood for the wood stove so electric flew up to $600 for one month (this was in mid 1980’s so add in inflation) which all I could not keep up, so fell behind. Started selling what I could. Met my second husband (married 5 years later) who didn’t make as much as my X did, but helped the best he could. I was so far behind at that time (add in lawyer costs, court costs, etc.) there was no catching up. Bankruptcy ensued and we moved to TN. The year of the move, we got married, I lost my job of 22 years due to the company closing, I had tendinitis surgery, and the bankruptcy went through. So moved to TN with no money a DH and 1 child. My oldest was 18 and went off by herself. My MDD chose to live with her dad (that is a whole other story). So I’ll stop there. Long story short, a move back to CT for more money, job loss there to a closing (again!) stuck with 2 houses, couldn’t sell the TN one and bankruptcy once again. Jump ahead once again and took early retirement. Was able to sell the TN house and only broke even. Sold the CT house and made a small profit which paid for the RV and paid off the car loan. Now, we are still playing catch-up from all that mess but treading water. No savings left but all bill accounted for. Not having any housing costs is really helping up get out from under.

Annie- you got this..1 day at a time
Well I got a call from Sean he probably won't be coming to lunch poor guy. With his eye the way it is he is prone to migraines which then makes him feel yucky all over.so I told him to lie down and I bought him thing you keep in the freezer and put over your head and eyes when a migraine comes on.
This pulls down over his eyes and helps with the migraines3 -

Cool, cloudy morning. Critters fed and reading here before going out to clean goat pen. Our drainage was not working well yesterday and we got some water in the shed from the rain. That should get me some exercise.
Lisa- I went to water exercise yesterday at the Y and was sitting in the hot tub afterwards doing my foot and ankle exercises when I looked around at the people in there with me and thought of your comment on "people soup". I almost laughed out loud but didn't want to have to explain myself.
Barbie - I agree with others, Annie looks like she might have a bit of weimaraner. You all look happy.

Did the 20-40-60 workout on the treadmill then walked to Food Lion to get potatoes that are on sale for Vince for dinner, the guy who did the trimming of the bushes (I’d told him that for 2 years Vince has been saying “they need to be trimmed”, it never happened just like I predicted) and put down the mulch. Gardeners: Preen is stuff that deters weeds from growing but doesn’t hurt the plants, right? Because one thing I am OCD about is weeds. I see a weed and I have to pull it. So I’d rather put Preen down on the slope where he put down the mulch so weeds don’t grow. Then went to Aldi.
Lisa – love what you’ve done with your craft area.
Pip – you have the same popcorn maker that I have! I’m looking for an airfryer lid (just the lid) for the IP to give Jess for Christmas at a decent price. The only one I can find is on Amazon, and they’re asking $150. For a few more dollars, you can get a new IP. So I’ll just keep looking for one. Every place I’ve found they’re out of stock. Love the color of Lucy’s new collar
Rebecca – poor Athena! That looks nasty. Hope she’s OK, I’m sure she is
Lanette – Bryan just said that Leo eats a lot (like Bryan did) and giggles a lot. I’m hoping that being a parent he now realizes that it’s not a piece of cake. You try your best. I’m not getting my hopes up because like you said, I’ve been disappointed before and I don’t want it to happen again. Denise did text us a picture of PJ in his Spiderman costume. When we were there, he was watching a Spiderman show. Personally, I thought it was too violent for him at that age. But he’s not my child
Kylia – so glad you found those keys
Margaret – regarding your friend who needs to drink water: I find that if I eat something like popcorn or a protein pancake or dried chickpeas, that makes me want to drink. That’s nice of you to have her talk about other things besides her illness
Annie (not Annie DE) – congrats on your new home
Now for Annie DE – (((HUGS dear)))). You have so much on your plate. Glad you got your electric bill paid
joyfulandactive – welcome! Glad to hear that your cancer is in remission. What kind of career are you training for? Many of us on this thread don’t do the “friend” thing, but we’re all friends checking in here. Glad to have you join us
Allie – I had heard that eating ice cream helps with migraines. Don’t know since I’ve never had one (thank goodness). I think it has something to do with the “brain freeze”. Guess it couldn’t hurt to try…..lol Can you think of a better reason to have to eat ice cream???????
Rita – you may fall down, but you always get right back up. So very proud to call you my friend
At the gym I realized that I have coupons to use the Y for free. That’s where they have the olympic size pool and I used to take the deep water aerobics. I have to talk to the gal who is at the front desk (who used to let me go in for free before Covid) to see if these passes are still good.
Maybe I’ll work on the kitchen towel for the lady who helped my father.

Today was cookie making day for sons birthday present. I figured since we're down, we might as well bring him the cookies I normally make. They turned out well. Oatmeal with a broken up bar of Lilly's dark chocolate. I made 2 dozen.😁

Evening ladies
Doris and I had a lovely time and we stopped at Ocean State job lot..got some markers and pens to try out..
Poor Sean stayed home and rested today.. his only option is either have the eye removed and have a glass eye put in or wear an eye patch.. neither of which he ready for yet..
Picked up a few non rawhide treats for Alfie and a new winter coat for him..3 -
Rebecca - Corey dragged the last of the frozen cookie dough for the cowboy cookies out last night because he was having a sweet craving, and urged me to make them again. I use an ice cream scoop to portion out the cookie dough, freeze it hard, then ziploc four at a time to be cooked later. I made the ones he baked last night in April! They're basically an oatmeal cookie on steroids, with chocolate chips added. That's why your cookie binge made me think of them. Nice of you to give up one of your Lily's bars for them! Hope your trip is just wonderful. Is this your first time to see Eli?
Sue - Honestly, hot tubs are even more "people soup" than bathtub baths! I've gotten into hot tubs that I own, but that would be because I know who's been in it, and am familiar with the cooties. At least that's "me" soup. Getting into "people soup" with strangers is way past my ability to survive the ick factor.
Allie - Sorry about Sean's issues, but pleased you enjoyed your time with Doris.
Painted, played with clay, did laundry and then painted some more. Good day.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa

The stupid electric bill requires a PIN to get any info. And of course Dad doesn't have that. Such a mess.
Annie in Delaware who is overreacting
Can't you knock on his door, then after a moment, open and call him?
In Australia, the rubbish gets picked up on the same day about 99% of the time. My husband was in charge of it, but when he was in hospital, I got it out there. Is yours more random?
You might have to take over the house systems ... or post signs about them.

I say he could have flown home and flown back to pick his car up cheaper than staying 2 weeks in a hotel for goodness sakes but who am I to say.

Biopsy came in basal cell. Could be way worse. Told Joe that between consultations, extractions, Mohs surgery, and possible implants I might as well move to Medford for the winter. :{
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
Sorry! Where? Mine was on the tip of my nose.
Implants?

2023 Optimistic October1. Write down three things you can look forward to this month.
Daylight Savings Time!! - which occurred early in the morning of October 1.
Spring's developments
Thanksgiving
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time)
There's lots to be optimistic about!
Daylight in evenings so we can start exercising outdoors after work.
Work going well. Finished that instruction manual and got myself in a good position to make improvements to the project I'm working on.
Reading books. Colouring. Doing sudokus.
Getting stuff done on my home computer.
The garden!
My family.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you.
Taking steps toward the "organise the house" project.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list.
I've actually done quite a few things already today.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good.
I'm definitely not a pure optimist. Too much has happened, especially in the last 5 years, for me to call myself an optimist, but there are a lot of good things going on too.
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better.
I know!!
7. Look for the good in people around you today.
Most people have been really helpful and nice lately.
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding.
Not quite yet. Maybe at some point next week.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust.
I don't make a lot of goals these days.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently.
I've been reflecting on what I've accomplished over the past 5 years. I look back and wonder how I did it.
11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward.
It helps to try to look at things from other perspectives.
12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today.
There's lots to be positive about. Loved Rita's post with a list of all our positive things.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing.
Asking the pharmacist for a recommendation to overcome this allergic reaction?!?
14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation
One constructive thing I've done today is to wash my pillowcases to ensure they don't have any essential oil residue!!
15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted.
Being able to drive when I need to.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting.
Cycling.
Colouring.
Reading.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society.
Quietness.
18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead.
Oh yeah.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future.
More tenacity
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time.
Emails.
21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you.
I don't worry much about what others expect of me.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague
23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize.
Absolutely!!
1. Sleep. Cool. Quiet. Comfy.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently.
Lots of sleep
Read 3 books, done 2.5 colourings
Family
25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now?
Family
Work
I'm not sure I have a 3rd priority at the moment!!26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face.
31. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time.
32. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
33. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
34. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
35. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.
