WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2024

Regarding glasses, my husband and I both got glasses this month. He got 1 new pair and was able to reuse his frame for the second pair. I was able to reuse both my frames.
All 4 glasses are progressive lenses and have prisms. 2 pair are also transition lenses. Plus we both returned for a second
visit and had all sorts of extra testing done.
I can't remember the exact cost but it was somewhere between $3500 and $4000.
Regarding stress, yes "the plan" is a good thing and still slowly progressing but it is hugely stressful on several levels.
Also, because I have completed 1 year of a 2 year fixed term position, I have been applying for jobs and attending interviews. I still have a permanent option I could go back to but it isn't as high a level.
March has been such a busy month!
March is also the anniversary of my husband's accident.
And yes, the trip to Canada in October was very, very stressful.

Lisa ~ So glad the tree did not hit your house. We have a very tall old maple tree outside my bedroom window and I really worry that it might need to go although it does give wonderful shade in the summer.
By the way, I love the photo of you holding your niece! Your hair was lovely in that photo.
Heather ~ Glad you bit the bullet and made an appointment. Hope it all works for the best.
Rosemarie ~ I think you were wise to distance yourself from the intrusive friend. We have all had times when people we once liked/admired became a negative part of our life.
I know I have kept you all updated on my BIL that my husband was the only one he had to see that he was taken care of. He passed away early Saturday morning at the hospital. My husband finally realized that he had gotten to the point that no matter what tests/procedures etc. they did for him would not improve his quality of life. He agreed to have him taken off life support. That was a very, very difficult decision for him. He will have a graveside service with just my DH and our son's family.
Carol in GA
Very sorry that you and your husband had to go through making that decision and I am sorry for your loss.

Machka - I worked in a male dominated industry and I was in a role that allowed me to see payroll for all of the staff in Western Canada for a company I worked for. There were still some huge differences in wages between men and women doing the same jobs, even taking the different cost of living into account for the different regions. That was 2008-2010, that was all in middle management and above. The workers wages were all set by contracts so the rates were even.
I am not a fan of unions but I think this is something they help with. Gender has nothing to do with wages.
I hope the treatment helps your eyes fast.
Heather - I hope you are able to get some answers from the clinic. It will be much easier for you to make decisions.
Lanette - Is Lessons in Chemistry biographical?
Lisa - Michaela gets focused on any task she is doing. She loves learning and doing. She is a little behind with reading, mostly because like most her age the school closures throughout Covid slowed them down. She was able to read most of the recipe this time and was quite proud of herself.
Rodger is still working nights so that is still a problem. He is trying to be more talkative though so that’s something. I personally think if he would do something besides play on his phone and watch ghost shows he would be doing much better. What do I know though. 😂
Thanks for thinking of the shipping for the bras. It sure is insane pricing. I bought my FIL 3 packs of butter rum lifesavers a few years ago as a surprise treat after he shared the meme that goes around asking “do you remember”. We have a store that sells “old” candy. The three packs cost be $6, I went to mail them and it was $23. Most expensive lifesavers ever! That was just within Canada not even a border.
Our flights are the same, I could fly to see you cheaper than going to NB.
Carol -Sorry to hear of your BIL’s passing. Your husband made a wise and compassionate decision.
Barbara - Hope you have a very speedy recovery.
Machka - I hope they find some answers to that rash. Stress and anxiety can bring so many ailments. My niece has been on long term disability for 2 years. She has been having seizures, after all of the tests and treatments they have concluded that it is anxiety causing it. It’s a shame she is only in her 20’s.
Lisa - glad that Corey is starting to see an improvement.
On glasses - I’m curious what a pair of progressive glasses cost in the States. They are close to $1000 here for me and that’s if I buy clearance frames.
Heather - lovely painting. I’m with Lisa, depth and perspective are where I struggle.
Allie - are you watching Miles once a week again now?
Pip - it may not hurt, but it sure looks painful.
Debbie - is your Mom feeling she “has” to plant? It seems like a lot.
Vicki - it sure seems like a long wait to find out what’s wrong when you don’t feel well.
Kaitlyn and I managed to get a lot of pictures sorted yesterday. Some that we were going through were old tin pictures of my ancestors. My Grandmother, bless her, spent a lot of time identifying people in them and noting it down. Now we are trying to figure out how they are related so far I have traced to my 3X great grandfather! This is my Great Grandmother my grandmother’s Mom. I need to continue that.
I have a homework assignment to do this evening, the first step is interviewing a bilingual person about learning a second language. I am speaking at 4 to a young lady I worked with that has been teaching English in Japan for the last couple of years. She actually speaks a few languages I think.
I’ll make supper then do homework, then may take a long bath and relax this evening. It’s been a long week of sleepless nights.
It’s been lightly snowing since last night.

I used the Dr. Scholls callus remover and it looks like what it does is basically pull the callus out of your foot or wherever it is. I’ll probably use it again in a few days, but it’s much much better
After exercise went to Adi to return some things that we didn’t use and that I really don’t want to take home. Then to WalMart to do the same thing and buy a sun visor. Then bought gas.
Will probably take a shower and then play some mahongg

Well crazy tenant threw a temper tantrum again last night. We were out feeding horses when she came home and DD asked her why she was still here. She claims DD drew a gun on her and caĺled 911. DD also called 911 and the operator asked us to meet with officers at a school close to here so we left and went to meet them. Had a good talk. They suggested we not engage with her at all and if she begins yelling and being verbally abusive use our phones to record her. They also suggested we pursue anti- harrassment charges against her and possibly get a restraining order. We do not even own a gun so don't where she came up with that. This is maybe the 4th or 5th time now she has called the police.
Pip - that burn looks nasty.
Vicki - hope you feel better soon.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA9 -
Michele so glad you found something for your foot!

Glasses-last fall I got two pair of no line bifocals (progressive lenses) and it was around 800 for both together. I got moderate priced frames. I bought them from America's Best-they offer the two pair for a special price. It does sound like our friends in other countries pay more.
Allie-I have a Samsung 43 inch ty in my bedroom. It was a bit too small for the living room so I picked up a 59 inch Samsung for there. I do like the picture quality. Tvs have come down in prices.
Pretty tired tonight. IRS visit went well. I don't think we will have any findings. Have to see oral surgeon in mornin-he is checking on post he put in and we will have a better time from of when I get actual implant.
Have a bit of water coming into the basement (always been pretty dry down there). Have a company coming to look at it Saturday. I view that as a maintenance issue that needs to be done whether I am selling the house or staying. I have heard good things about this business. I will see what they have to say and then decide on getting other bids.
Off together sleep. Have an out of town morning meeting after dentist, then back for a 1 pm meeting. Work food pantry tomorrow night.
Take care all,

Carol, condolences on the loss of your BIL.
Re Genie bras - no way could I wear them. I need underwire and sizing by band and cup size. My current favorite is the Soma vanishing back bra. When I broke my wrist and Dave, bless his heart, could not get my bra on me to save his life, I sent him to CVS to get me an Ah-bra. I said I have no idea on the size, just buy the biggest one. It was so big around that the back rode up to my neck and the cups were still too small.

Mom loves to garden and wants to do it. We will not be doing as much as in the past and I will be pushing to get extra help this year.
Now that the restaurant wants to buy again, that is a good motivator. She will have to renew her business license .

Please message your info to me on Sunday or Monday morning. My goal is to post it by noon every Monday - Pacific Standard time or whatever it is these days.
We have to be MFP friends in order to use their messaging system, so send me a friend request and that will get things lined up.
Unfortunately, I often don't read all posts here, but I do check the messages over the weekend, so adding information to a regular post for me to pick up won't work for inclusion in the Monday post I send out.
Please let me know if this isn't confusing enough, lol.

Allie - it must be the week for things quitting. My vacuum died Sunday evening (my grandmother would have said that’s what I get for doing chores on Sunday). Then my 4 year old dishwasher died on Monday. The vacuum I’m not that upset about, the dishwasher really upsets me.
Sue - I sure hope she leaves soon.
What is the next step from your lawyer’s perspective?
I meant to post this picture earlier. It is my great grandmother.
Debbie - that’s good that she’ll have some help.
I am tired today. I’ve not been sleeping well and when I am I’m having strange dreams.
I took a bath and am now going to head to bed.
I have a cute little story to share.Kaitlyn’s best friend, Raquel, has a son that is a few weeks younger than Jonah. They are 12. A few weeks ago I went to spend the night at Raquel’s and her son, Chase, and I were chatting in the morning and he told me that he really wanted to have another sleepover at my house with Jonah. We’ve had a few over the years. We decided that Spring break would be a good time.
Last night Kaitlyn was telling me how Chase has been having some worries because he already wears a hearing aid and he found out he also needs braces now and glasses, he starts a new school next year and is concerned he’ll be bullied and he didn’t have enough friends. Raquel asked him what number he felt was the right number and reminded him that people may have a circle of friends but there is usually only one or two that are particularly special. He thought that Jonah was that person for him.
At the end of her telling me Kaitlyn asked if I was still planning on bringing them for a sleepover because this weekend starts Spring break. I told her that yes, I needed to text Raquel. Tonight I received a text from Raquel. It said, “Next week is Spring break, Chase asked me to text you and remind you.”
So we’re figuring out when the boys are coming. I love these children in my life and love that they want to stay with me.
This was the last time they stayed.

I'm up way past my bedtime. Not sure I'll sleep much.
My best friend T messaged me this afternoon - the house right across the street from her is for sale. I'm going to go see it tomorrow afternoon. She's coming with me, she's friends with the owner - it's a divorce situation, neither of them can afford to keep it so it's on the market.
She would love to have me closer and vice versa. They're ready to help me move!
I've been concerned with the future upkeep on my current place here. I don't have the enthusiasm I had last year for jumping in and doing things, and I keep seeing more to do. Might just be the winter doldrums.
This new place - small yard, newer house that's quite a bit smaller than this one I'm currently in. Fenced back yard for Rosie to run.
It even has a chicken coop. Need I say more?
Will stop by the credit union tomorrow and see what they could put together just in case it pans out. Not sure this is the best time to be buying or selling a house interest wise, but if it's meant to be...
I guess no matter what happens, I better light a fire and start decluttering big time anyhow.

Lanette - Wow!!! No wonder you were awake! How exciting. I hope the house looks good and you can sort out some finance. Sometimes we have to bite the bullet while we are still able, and not wait until we are too decrepit to do anything. People wait too long. And you can take your chickens!
I really hope this works out for you. Women friends are the best! And what a great motivation to declutter.
My only advice would be, don't try and do it all by yourself. Get lots of help. Young, strong people, students, have been a great help to my friend G. Even having them there has been a motivator. Body-doubling.

Heather - thank you! You are so right - if the opportunity is here now and it works, go for it.
T is already rounding up the troops - her husband and son for starters. They have trucks and trailers and like Lisa's Corey, love to do the "guy" stuff. And I could get Collette to come help declutter and deep clean this place.
I just whipped up a financial statement to take to the credit union tomorrow.
Who knows, an offer might come in tomorrow ahead of me if I choose to make one. But I do believe things work out like they're supposed to. So if not this one, there will be another one.

Lisa, beautiful painting!
Heather, hope the sports clinic is helpful.
Annie, decided to take inspiration from you and get outside for some much needed walking. My walking trail that goes up onto one of our fields still has snow on it so doing some walking in the yard....which is huge so I really have no excuse. Most of the snow in the yard is gone so can walk in my runners instead of boots. Did 15 minutes so far this morning and took the two dogs with me. They followed for the first two rounds then stood back and watched me for a bit before joining in again. Silly things...probably wondering what I was doing. Will try to do another 15 minute walk this afternoon. Will continue with this routine for the coming week before I increase it.
JoyLisaInArkansas wrote: »Did 22 minutes of yoga+ (added knee pushups, crunches, leg lifts, etc.) I can now stand on my left foot with my right foot up in tree pose for 30 seconds, but have only made it to 20 seconds for the other side. It's got the most damage, so it will take time. Just taking it slow, adding a few seconds at a time. Just add one or two repetitions of each when I'm able. Also added leg work with the band, as well as my first arm curls with them. Sneaking up on myself has become a habit.
Later, y'all,

They are retirement communities.
I also made it to a free concert at a church this afternoon. This was a featured organ player on tour throughout the United States. I almost didn't go because I didn't think I liked the organ that much. Boy...would that have been a mistake. He was wonderful! I have an entirely different impression of the organ now. This really opened my eyes! There were only about 65 people there...which is a real shame. I bet they thought they were not crazy about the organ either. This gentleman made the organ come alive!

I'm glad you're getting out and enjoying yourself.Job is going well. I still work with the NBA team, Nuggets and also have some shifts covering a backstage position for the hockey team, Avalanche. I know nothing about hockey, except I can tell you the players you see punching the lights out of opponents will show up after the game all cleaned up, teeth in place, wearing a tailored suit and tie, and have a face like a Swedish supermodel. Gorgeous guys, and very soft spoken. I work concerts occasionally. I was at the foot of the stage for Ricky Martin + Pitbull which was an awesome experience. This Tuesday, I'll be present backstage for Madonna's concert. I've been listening to a biography of her and breaking up the book listening to play her albums and videos. She was such a trailblazer! Tremendously accomplished and I think I appreciate her more now knowing she is out singing and dancing at age 66. Should be interesting.
I still make it to lots of concerts. This past Friday the symphony did a program with guest performers who put together a setlist of great songs recorded by Joni Mitchell, Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, Eagles and other artists who comprised the Lookout Mountain music scene on Laurel Canyon. I was going to high school on Laurel Canyon when all this was happening, so the music has a deep, emotional meaning for me.
My special friend N continues to be a light in my life. We haven't seen each other in 132 days, but we've texted every single day and we talk frequently for hours. His birthday was last week, so I gave him tickets to see Bonnie Raitt in S. Carolina in May, so for sure we are clearing calendars to meet up there. Between now and then, who knows? Once I am done with basketball, there will be more opportunity for us to take road trips as he continues to try to golf and hear live music in all 50 states.

I'm glad to hear it! Is he still in Post Traumatic Amnesia? My husband was like the girl in the movie 50 First Dates ... each day was like waking up for the first time. Every time he fell asleep it wiped out the previous awake time period.
You'll have discovered that unlike the movies, people don't wake up from comas raring to go and picking up where they left off. It takes time.
One of the things that takes time is getting fitness back. He'll have lost a whole lot of fitness, especially if he was on a ventilator accessed with a tracheostomy because his body will have done nothing at all, including breathing, for weeks. My husband struggled to sit up for a while because he had completely lost his core strength, and then standing was another struggle.
But once he had accomplished standing and taking a few steps, there was no stopping him. He had to use a walker for quite a while but we'd walk up and down the hospital hallways when I visited.
One step at a time.

Machka-I like to be done eating by 6pm to get at least a 12 hour fast in. I wake up early enough to see the sunrise, most of the time, so I want coffee early and that breaks my fast. I also find I sleep much better if I am finished eating well before I go to sleep.

Things are falling into place regarding the Easter Holidays. We are babysitting the kids on Easter Monday morning, so my son and DDIL can get out for a long bike ride. My son says he will precook a lunch that only needs heating up. The slight adjustment is that my cleaner is coming that afternoon, so I will have to hide the house keys somewhere she can find them and let herself in.
DDIL keeps saying she doesn't want a present for her birthday next week, and that will be her present, but I'm going to get her some posh chocolates. I wanted to get her a voucher for a salon treatment, but she is reluctant. I have made some hand painted cards, so she can have one of those.
We still have a Bea pick up next Tuesday! Hope to have Max for a lunch expedition, and the girls at some point. My son wants us to babysit one Friday night in April, so he can take DDIL out for dinner. All good.

I have faith in you that you'll know if it's the right time and the right house.

Good morning ladies!
Ava drinking half my weight in ounces? No. I aim for the old standard eight eight ounce cups. I usually record seven, but I think I hit eight and my recording is lousy.
Not much going on here. I have a couple emails to write. And of course Teddy needs a trim.
Today my book says make a list of all the ways that being overweight bothers me. I think my reasons for losing weight overlap. I already listed fitting into my clothes and being pleased with my body. I have the list in front of my stationary bike. And I have a phone reminder to review them in the afternoon when I get hungry.
I have been eating back my calories, and I'm losing a little more slowly. But slow is okay.
Okay ladies, have a marvelous day! May you be healthy, happy, safe, and free!
