#SAVE OUR NEWSFEED
Please!!!8 -
SAVE OUR NEWSFEED
MFP is going to lose so many members of it removes this feature. A lot of us enjoy keeping up with our friends on their fitness journeys. I’ve met some great, supportive people on here. If MFP removes the newsfeed I and many others will be done with this app.9 -
Please save the feed!! Been here since 2019 and the newsfeed and my friends is what has always brought me back here. Being able to support one another daily is a major part of our fitness journey. Taking it away will kill this app!!8
-
Yeah no point renewing premium if the feed is gone. If I’m no longer seeing my friends accomplishments when loading up the app there’s no reason not to look at other apps to see what they have to offer.5

Same here!!
The newsfeed is/was one of the best features of MFP. My MFP crew has been my safe place to talk about my health struggles. I have made so many life long friends. They inspire me and keep me motivated. I've cried when I've lost MFP friends in death. I've been trying overjoyed when inactive friends come back. I'm sad that I may lose my connection with all the awesome people I've met along my journey.8 -
Since the beginning for me in Feb 2015 adding pals and interacting with them through the news feed has been what MFP is all about. Scrolling through my pals' updates for over 3000 days is why I am here. To me, there is no point to MFP if there is not a news feed, I can count calories very well on my own.9
-
@Betty - I bet this app will lose a lot of money because people will not renew their PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTIONS!! Having the privacy and friendships in the NEWSFEED is an extremely unique and important part of MyFitnessPal.
I agree! This is my safe space!I for one will be one of those that will not renew premium if a GREAT solution is not found...
I already canceled my subscription to prove a point. Where logic and compassion isn't there, money talks. I subscribed to MFP solely to support them, because I've loved it here so much. After 12 years of being a member, I'm not sure that I'm going to stay. I feel very anxious posting in Community, because I'm not sure who will see it. I need my safe place back!

I’m test driving two other apps that have newsfeeds. Trying to figure out which one to give my premium membership $’s to, Fatsecret and Lose It! MFP is just another in a litany of calorie counters without the newsfeed.8

Yet true!

We're losing the Newsfeed which is all right because not many of us used it. It has always been kind of a duplicate of the Community Forum, and mine is full of automatic posts when someone closed their diary for the day or did some exercise.
But more importantly, will we still have access to the Food Diary, Exercise Log, Reports, etc.?
Also, will our new profiles have a Goals area?
That's something I'd like to see ... Food and Exercise Goals. Whether the goal is to lose a certain amount of weight, or drink a certain amount of water in a day, or consume a certain number of carbs, or cycle a certain distance or whatever.
I'd like to see reports and progress bars as we move toward our goal.
I'd like to see challenges similar to what Strava has ... some exercise ones like walking 50 km in a month, or exercising 15 minutes a day each day of a month, etc., and some diet ones like logging each day of a month.
These things would make MFP more interactive and motivational.0 -
actually many of us DO use the feed as a way to communicate with all our friends, like and comment on their posts and progress in one place.
but can't you use strava and synch it with MFP?7 -
if one reason they're getting rid of the news feed is lack of compatibility with their chosen ad platform, their very UNtargeted ads weren't going to bring in the bucks they were hoping for. less but highly targeted ads would make more money while not alienating users.
i'm an overweight, over 60, weight training enthusiast, but i see SO many ads for temu (if i were interested in temu, i'd already have the app and would bother clicking there from MFP), ads for music stores i've already been to because i already bought instruments there or stuff like clothes for thin people and recently russian brides, but i'm a married woman and really not looking for a russian GF or wife. i have yet to see a single ad that i might consider clicking.SummerSkier wrote: »Sounds like it is a done deal. The feed has been getting buggier weekly so powers that be probably can not fix it and rather than leaving it broken, they are doing away with it. The activity feed is definitely not a replacement too bad. Wish the software was easier to fix but agree it is pretty old and outdated. I will miss my friends 😥😥
What about our profiles? Are those going to disappear since they are sort of where the newsfeed interacts? Of course looking at profiles even your own has also been broken recently. sigh.
the whole site is buggy and broken - i've been here since 2014, but i had to abandon my original account because it stopped working, which is when i created this newer account. i mostly come here because my fitness friends are here. it's a very sad thing to remove the news feed...4 -
Doing away with Newsfeed is not going to help members with meeting their goals. Giving and receiving daily support from your core group daily is what makes members successful in achieving goals with weight loss, exercise and mental health. It's the main reason many choose to stay on mfp.
Many are already leaving, trying to find other platforms to stay connected with their friends/pals made here. I've been on mfp for almost 8 yrs and I'm really sad about this😢
6 -
Please don't get rid of the newsfeed- MANY of us have been here for years, and have wonderful friendships that we come here for the support and the updates - I post holidays daily for people and talk about all the things we can celebrate and get the support we need to be successful. Taking away newsfeeds to only use community groups is going to clutter the groups, and create a mass exodus of members that ONLY come here to catch up with friends and share progress. If it was strictly for calorie counting, there are LOTS of ways to do that. C'mon MFP, don't ruin a good thing!9

This.is.a.TERRIBLE.Idea. Save our newsfeed!!!!!6

Save the Newsfeed!! It’s what’s kept me on MFP for 10 years. No reason to stay without it.8

MFP has 200 million users.
If 200,000 people used the News Feed, that's 0.1% of the total users.
If only 20 million people actively use MFP (10%), and 200,000 of them use the News Feed, that's 1% of the total active users.
When moderators etc. say that relatively few people use the News Feed, this is what they mean. To you, 200,000 people might seem like a lot, but when you run the math, it's not.
And quite frankly, I'd guess it's something more like 20,000 rather than 200,000.

The newsfeed is the main reason I've continued to use this app. Removing this feature gives me zero incentive to continue.5

Registered users doesn't tell the whole story though - how many of those are active users? That's a number I'd be more interested in and then see how many of those use the newsfeed (and how they measure 'using the newsfeed')
There has been protest here, but I think it's only a fraction of the newsfeed users - many of them probably aren't aware anything is changing. The only reason I know is because I'm active on the boards - I received no email informing me and the official post here didn't even specify newsfeed were disappearing, it only mentioned how this new 'activity feed' works.
We'll see if protest changes anything, but to say the new 'activity feed' in the boards (and groups) is a valid replacement is a joke honestly, just camouflaging for something they're taking away.7 -

In my calculations above, I suggest that perhaps 10% are active users.
But let's say that 1% of 200,000,000 are active users = 2,000,000.
Now let's assume that 10% of 2,000,000 are News Feed users ... that's 200,000, and still a significant minority.
And again, looking at these numbers (and knowing the ghost town my News Feed has become in recent years), I'd guess no more than 20,000 (1%) of the possible 2,000,000 active users use News Feed.
If it is also old technology and not supported, why would they keep it?
If 500 people get miffed and leave, what kind of dent is that in active users? Especially if most of them are not premium users?

I get your point, but your numbers are guesses. I would like the actual numbers.6 -
Not that it's possible but I would be most interested in the numbers of paid versus unpaid subscribers who use the newsfeed actively. As in.. a deal breaker. I'm certain it is for some but what's the actual percentage.
Other than including me in a 'head count' in order to sell advertising to all users (paid or not), the site hasn't extracted any money from me.
I can't be mad at any of it if I'm not a paying customer.
We are all commodoties to these sites. If we don't pay we have are not worth much to Francisco Partners, the private equity firm that owns MyFitnessPal.
I get whatever they decide to give me for free. My choice to stay or not.
Most of the 'free web' that once existed is gone. The web has been and will continue to become greatly monetized.3 -
I’m seeing user IDS on these threads I’ve never heard of, and (looking at their post counts) who seldom post on the “public” areas of the boards.
It strikes me there’s a huge number of users who bypass the boards and go straight for a direct connection.
The boards were vibrant and wonderful til the last batch of major changes, when they just shriveled and died on the vine.
I hope to heavens you guys have a plan and aren’t just winging it again.
I actually love MFP. Yep. I love an app. Anyone who asks me what made me successful, or whom I overhear in the dressing room struggling, I pipe up and tell them the wonders of MFP. I’ve tried to pay it forward on the boards with new and struggling members, Ive served on at least one “committee”, did a user zoom conference -happily, I might add- when asked. For heavens sake, somewhere in this app is GIFs of me hanging my stomach out versus sucking it in, and pulling extra skin out to here versus tucking it in to Lycra. I can talk with women about menopause, periods, etc etc etc when bashful me would have issues discussing them IRL. I’ve read and participated in convos about weight loss and bowel movements. There is no faffing way I’d share any of that anywhere else.
You’ve got a good, basic, intuitive app (sans the many crappy user food entries). It doesn’t have to be beautiful, it doesn’t have to be trendy, but it does need to serve our needs both logging and having the person-to-person interaction.
I’m with @KickassAmazon76 I run screaming from the idea of “groups”. I’ve got a curated list of meaningful friends. I don’t want to join a group who has friends of friends of friends, and share what is sometimes personal stuff.
I’ve got friends here going through major health, life, job, depression and relationship issues that they share with friends. I am, frankly, honored that I’m in their trusted circle.
MFP friends are not just weight loss pals, they are something more. They are an extended network of friends who share the good bad and the ugly of life and weightloss- unlike other social media sites where every damn person is perfectly dressed, perfectly coiffed, and puckering up for the camera with their perfect SO or angelic, faultless child.
MFP is real, when other sites are not.
Maybe you didn’t intend to go that route, but you did, and you incidentally created strong communities.
Why not think about that, and channel and monetize that, if it’s a funds issue? Maybe a mid-range subscription fee. The $100+ is hard for a lot of folks to swallow, but nor should folks expect it to be absolutely free. Or a staggered subscription fee?
But by the same token, if you go that route, how about doing some curating of your own? Ads for athletic wear or equipment, instead of the AI or cartoon ads of shrinking people who “lost 25 pounds of fat in a week”.
21 -
And look at your own Welcome and Getting Started boards. What’s the first thing people ask?
For friends.
Yup. Friends.
I sincerely doubt these new users want to get involved in extended groups and share their misery and hopes.
Yup. Misery. Been there, too.16 -

Your response is full of "Ifs" and guesses, not facts. You sound like an out-of-touch employee or owner of MFP rather than a frustrated user. This is not reality and you are not in the majority.
I'm not a frustrated user. I'm a reasonably content user. And given my employment and educational history, my "guesses" are likely pretty accurate so yes, you're right, neither I nor you are not in the majority.
You might like to read the statistics to get an idea of reality: https://www.businessofapps.com/data/myfitnesspal-statistics/
And something to think about ... whatever happens with MFP is just business. It's all cost accounting.4 -
The newsfeed was the best MFP feature, the heart and soul of keeping us accountable and logging. The Community Page isn't the place for sharing our daily struggles and victories--It feels too impersonal and lacks privacy. Private groups are a cumbersome stand-in at best. After 9 years here, I"m having to find alternate ways to maintain those important friendships I treasured here; I can log calories anywhere--There are better places to do it--but the friends lists/newsfeed was what made MFP unique and effective, giving us a more private space in a larger social media site to easily check in daily with people we came to know and trust. The other bells and whistles don't matter. I think your most devoted users will end up leaving in droves unless a version of the newsfeed can be returned to us. I know the old newsfeed has become difficult for MFP to manage, but surely you all have the tech know-how to create a new form of it that works for you and for us?4
-
It is interesting to read the discussion about how active or not the newsfeed is. The ONLY reason I really keep friends is if they were engaged on the feed. I did find a lot of folks are not. But instead of getting rid of it I agree that it is a secret weapon and trying to teach people about it and using it would help them more than they probably know. The activity feed is a strange thing. I will wait to make mine public again until it contains a bit more control. Like privacy friends only option would be a start.4
