How About We Don't Delete Newsfeeds

Please stop replying to Machka9
Please boycott MFP on Monday, May 27 by not logging into the site or app. Please tell all your friends to do this8 -
Save the Newsfeed, you incompetent nincompoops11

Post this on your feed and ask all your friends to post this too: To protest MFP removing the newsfeed, we will boycott MFP on Monday, May 27 by not logging into the site. If enough people don’t log in, that may show MFP what it would look like once the newsfeed is gone6

Yet true!
I lost interest in the streak when I discovered that it didn't track days we logged food or exercise and only tracked days we had MFP open for even a few seconds.
Your lack of interest in a feature does not negate the value it holds to someone else.5 -
Please do not take away the Newsfeed. It has has been instrumental to me in dealing with horrible health issues that have been tossed at me. The friends I made here encouraged me to eat right, exercise and keep on going when the going got tough. My Fitness Pal is My Fitness Family. Please don't think the Community posts will be a solution. You have something special here. Thank you.6

MargaretYakoda wrote: »Hi @springlering62 Thanks for the tag and questions. We'll work on getting an informational post up. I'll do my best to answer some of your questions here.
First off the Friend's List is not impacted by Newsfeed going away. You can still add friends, as you do need to friend someone to send them a Private Message. From the Friends List you can still click on your friend's profile and find the Diary icon to access their Diary if diary sharing is enabled.
As I mentioned, I know some of the community options aren't super ideal as a Newsfeed stand in and I think there will be growing pains and learnings as y'all find what works best for you and your friend groups.
Private Messages are still very much an option for one on one communication, and Private groups are a way to communicate with a curated group of people. But yes, not everyone may want to join a group.
I'm reading all of your feedback and passing it along to the team. We'll continue to research and explore other options for the future that better support different social interaction needs.
Personally I don’t think private messaging is a great replacement for any of the social features here.
1) By its nature it is only a limited discussion.
2) The creep factor can be significant.
Private messaging is not a newsfeed replacement. It’s a private conversation. Whoever at MFP conflated the two clearly doesn’t use the app.
I seldom do PMs.
You either get the chatty folks, who don’t want to end a conversation or keep hitting you up (I'm guilty, too, in fairness) or you’re only getting one person’s answer or suggestion for an issue you’re having.
Whether you’re having a problem with nighttime eating or freaking out over blowout meal, you don’t want just one persons take. You want and need a lot of varied input, so you can digest the suggestions and run from there.
That’s what the newsfeed is brilliant at.9 -
I cancelled my Premium renewal. Still on Premium for a few more months. If the newsfeed goes then I won’t be getting Premium anymore.
Have started looking at other apps in the meantime.
KEEP THE NEWSFEED PLEASE!!6 -
SAVE OUR NEWS FEED!!!2

I can't quite wrap my head around the concept of taking NewsFeed away... unless they're planning to replace it with something better??
Save our newsfeed, indeed!!3 -
They are really shooting down the heart and soul of this place. I’ve been here 11 years and loved giving and getting support from my friends. I check this app daily in my normal life to see my friends and what they’re up to. I lost 55 pounds with the best support group of my life. I hope this sinks this buggy disaster of an app. They can’t even get custom goals right. What a joke if they think we’re here for their features 🙄.6

springlering62 wrote: »So, we don’t “lose” our friends but now have to click them one by one by one to see what they’re up to?
And not just a single screen, but have to click through a series of screens to boot?
Who thought that was a great idea?
YES!!! totally agree Spring!!! 🌼👍🌼5 -

When I access MFP, I go straight into Community.
I rarely look at my Home page except when I go through to log some exercise.
Most of my access to MFP is my computer. App is for scanning bar codes as I find the app clunky.
Most of my access to MFP is also via computer. I rarely use the app.3 -
Also, I don’t log in to keep my streak going.
I log in to make sure that I
1) Don’t forget to eat (yeah. It’s a thing. And it’s not actually a good thing)
2) Keep my calories and carbs within the range needed to manage my diabetes.
Whatever else happens with this app, I will not be boycotting Monday.

MFP has 200 million users.
If 200,000 people used the News Feed, that's 0.1% of the total users.
If only 20 million people actively use MFP (10%), and 200,000 of them use the News Feed, that's 1% of the total active users.
When moderators etc. say that relatively few people use the News Feed, this is what they mean. To you, 200,000 people might seem like a lot, but when you run the math, it's not.
And quite frankly, I'd guess it's something more like 20,000 rather than 200,000.
Sorry. Inflated number. If remotely true, the majority are bots (Remember the Russian spam/fake friend requests? ) at least I got to decide whether to accept or not. New system. Public or completely private. No filter between.
For 200 million people, im certain MFP would be inclined to fix this entire site. Otherwise they are more inept than believed.
That's why I'm working with 10% of the published statistics (the 200 million is the published statistic) to weed out bots and people who have joined and left but still have a membership and suggesting that there might be 20 million active users. I doubt there would be more than 10% of the published 200 million who are active.
If you're interested in the numbers, you can google MFP stats and see what you come up with.1 -

SAVE THE NEWSFEED. This is a quick and easy way to encourage and share with our MFP friends. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT AWAY!!!!!!

And something to think about ... whatever happens with MFP is just business. It's all cost accounting.
It's bad business, monkey business. It's a lack of technical ability that is sinking this ship. They can't afford to hire or keep good programmers so they let the functionality break and complain about maintaining legacy features. They cannot keep up with their competition and make poor decisions that piss people off. The site ran for a long time with more features that were free and now these owners can't figure out how to maintain a basic page that has worked well for so long. This is not sound business practice.
I suspect that you work for them or are an associate. I don't see anyone else defending this decision.

No, I agree, I just didn’t want to be shot down. And no I don’t work for MFP.
Whatever I personally think about code / site changes, MFP is only in existence to make money. There is this weird preconception that companies “care” about their service users: we’re merely cash-cows to the majority of them. I have no idea of the accuracy of the stats being banded around in this discussion, but if reconfiguring the newsfeed costs £xxx and they are only going to lose £xx in revenue then it’s a business case to drop it 🤷♂️
By the way, I won’t be boycotting the site on Monday. I need to track my macros which is why I have it. Why on earth would I pay for something then choose not to use it? Personally I’m not bothered about the newsfeed but if I was, I would just find another site which delivered what I wanted and go there
MFP exists solely to make money. It isn’t interested in our views UNLESS it hits the bottom line.5 -

If the people in this thread want to keep the Newsfeed, they might have success if they can put together a business case for it.
(And no, I don't work for MFP. But do have education and experience in cost accounting.)1 -
Despite all the glitches and many bugs I sticked with MFP. I made some wonderful friends who became very important for me. All the joy comes from the newsfeed. And I think MFP is making a huge mistake by changing it to community. I really hope you're listening to your members. Something you should have done before! For now I cancelled my premium. It has no extra value anymore without the newsfeed. I can log food everywhere and probably better too but the friendfeed is your golden Ticket MFP. So please reconsider and let us be great together.7

Just FYI, let me introduce you to the organisation who owns MyFitnessPal and 168 other companies. Check out the list!
https://www.franciscopartners.com/investments
Then, "in 2021, MyFitnessPal partnered with Sprouts Farmers Market. Through this partnership, users were introduced to new healthy recipe ideas, food and health-related articles and other content."
https://www.sprouts.com/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyFitnessPal
"The past five years have seen steady revenue and usage growth for MyFitnessPal, although not much has changed from the original app vision. Under Armour struggled to build out its connected fitness segment, scaling back on its hardware ambitions in the past few years after multiple failures.
In 2020, Under Armour decided it was time to shift focus, with a new CEO, Patrik Frisk, focused more on apparel and less on the technology side. It sold MyFitnessPal for $345 million to investment firm Francisco Partners, $130 million lower than the price it had acquired it for in 2015.
The fact that no major tech company jumped for MyFitnessPal when it was for sale may be indicative of how the industry views MyFitnessPal’s rather unrefined advertising platform and its low conversion rate of its everyday users to its premium subscription service.
Since the acquisition, there hasn’t been much change on the app. The subscription service is pushed a bit more heavily, but for the most part, everyday usage is the same as it was with Under Armour. Francisco Partners have not said what its plans are with the app long-term."

I miss the MFP of the past.
Right, they should not have bought this if they are unable to maintain and upgrade it properly.
I’m sorry to say this but they bought it because they saw a chance to make money. They don’t care about the users (no profit making company does - they care about ROI for shareholders). They can make money by increasing income or reducing expenditure. The newsfeed - and any other changes coming - are the reduction in expenditure portion.
It isn’t going to return, I suspect the site will be simplified / show increasing lack of investment until they’ve milked it. Then they’ll either sell it off at a reduced rate having profited from increased fees and decreased expenditure or break it up and sell the code and mailing lists. If they haven’t already.
Is this crap practice? Yes. Is this what all big business does? Also yes. Is this how banks, pension and investment funds make money? Yes.3 -

The thing is: they are still making developments on the app, the past months I've seen several changes (integrating sleep, logging progress on the dashboard...), so they are still spending money on it, but they've decided the newsfeed specifically isn't worth investing in.7 -

Now, if someone on these forums can come up with a way to make the newsfeed pay for MFP - pretty sure they’d sit up and listen then!

I am saddened. The newsfeed was what attracted me to MFP. I am rather new, have 'only' lost 15 lbs. I am fighting my diabetes diagnosis (type 2) and so far it looks like I am succeeding. My morning glucose is now already in the normal range.
The newsfeed was my own little space here. I could fill them with friends to my liking (and vice versa) participate or take time off after we lost our beloved dog. My friends were there. Some motivated me and inspired me, others just started and our baby steps brought us together.
I suppose there is no money to be made with the newsfeed. Forcing everybody to participate on a discussion board will not be the same -not even close.
People like me will stay away and participate only once in a while. In the end, I fear there will be lots of advertisements. The more readers, the higher you can sell the ad space. Isn't that how it works?
Or will the newsfeed be a part of the premium membership now?
To me and many others, it won't matter. We might fall off the wagon and just stay off, or we will succeed quietly alone -somewhere.
I feel sorry for all the members who have built friendships with a lot of people during the year. Many are role models and I suspect they need it to stay focused. Maybe I start a blog somewhere or I participate on Instagram? Not sure, but I need interaction with others. It keeps me going.

FWIW... I would pay $10-15 a year for current free functionality IF it meant that the newsfeed was bug fixed and the meals didn't double or triple enter. I don't need all the bells and whistles... But I DO want the meal tracker and the newsfeed. Propose a tier membership schedule...
Free is simple calorie counter and community access. Gold is newseed and ability to save and create meals and recipes. Platinum is all the goodies of premium.6 -
Honestly the real reason I used premium was to get rid of all the ads on the newsfeed. LOL. With no newsfeed I guess the only thing I pay for is the ability to turn exercise cals off or on for my diary and the bar code scanning on my phone? I do miss the ability to private blog and the ability to actually use punctuation in private msgs or the ability to send or receive a private msg with a friend request. I certainly will miss the newsfeed but the change is inevitable and most likely nothing we say or protest about will make a difference to a done decision (altho recently at work I kept a 'tantrum of sorts' going on something until I did get my way which was pretty unusual) 🤷♀️🤣😳9

...
So, how is the Activity Feed supposed to work?
I thought, from reading the article in News & Announcements, that the Activity Feed would show up posts from your friends (it shows in the example that "Username and 109 other users were promoted to Premium).
But, no friend posts are showing up in my Activity Feed, and in turn, my friends can't see the post I made in their Activity Feed, either.
So, what's the deal? How is it supposed to actually work? Just a place for you to talk to yourself, publicly, and folks can comment, if they feel moved to visit your Profile Page, and read your Activity Feed?9 -
RIP MFP.. I shall miss you. I have been here since February 26, 2011, and am coming up on my 5,000th day of logging in. I love the newsfeed feature, and usually check in on the site before even logging on to Facebook or any other social media site.
My friends here have gotten me thru some really tough times, most recently a 63 day hospital stay with 2 ICU visits, being intubated, having a trach and feeding tube, and diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Most mornings, I don't have the energy to get out of bed, but I always check in here. Seeing what everyone on my friend list is up to has helped me get thru some of my darkest hours, and lately, most of them are not too bright.
Taking the newsfeed away is a terrible plan, and one that should be reconsidered before MFP is just another used to be place for people to connect, like MySpace. I predict in a year, people will be saying, "MFP, I used to use that site. Whatever happened to it?" 😔10
