@Evamutt When I first started my weightloss journey, and was working full time, I had a full pass at my local municipal rec centre. It enabled me to use the gym, attend classes, or use the pool whenever I wanted, and I went every day. As I lost weight and gained more confidence, I started doing a bit of running. So then I only purchased a pass for the winter months. Now I only purchase a "punch type card" and use it during the shoulder season when the snow isn't good enough to ski, but it's too yukky to do much else outdoors, other than walk the dogs. I have truly loved the flexibility of having a pass vs an "all or nothing" membership.
I have a bench and a few weights at home that I use twice a week. I need to stretch so do a hybrid of stretching and yoga poses most days, usually while I'm watching something on the TV. The rest of the time I paddle with a dragon boat group, paddle my kayak, run, walk and hike with the dogs, cross country ski and snowshoe in the winter (with the dogs, of course), and every so often do a deep water running class or a spin class because they're a good workout and I enjoy them.
My point is that I no longer feel obligated to have a gym pass. It worked very, very well for a season in my life. But now my life has changed. I'm retired and I have two busy dogs (a five year old border collie and a four year old golden retriever) who require a good walk every day which most often is an off-leash hike, ski, or snowshoe somewhere.
Being outdoors fills me emotionally and physically. And quite honestly there are just so many other things that I'd rather do outside instead of being inside a gym. Having a gym membership isn't always a pre-requisite to living an active life; it just depends what season of life you're in. I think once the gym feels like a weighty obligation or chore, it's time to ditch the membership and do the things outside that you enjoy. With your dogs! In my humble opinion, of course 🙂
P.S. As we age it's very important to lift some heavy-ish things and do movements that help our balance. We need that so we don't topple over and become one of the "broken hip" statistics!5 -
@ridiculous59 thank you so much for that perspective I think I'll put a hold on it. The payment just came out so I have a whole month before it gets put on hold. I do have a problem holding on to trying to keep doing things I've always done & enjoyed them but when things change I think if I don't keep doing the same things it's a negative thing instead of just a change3

Greetings, all you seasoned citizens.
I finally got my mind right and I'm starting to lose the pounds slowly. Logging food and weight every day. Reminding myself that it's alright to be a bit hungry at times.
Hang in there, my friends.9 -
I'm 70, living in Wild Wonderful West Virginia and enjoying retirement. Fighting off high blood pressure naturally with diet and exercise. Have lost 38 pounds since last August and have minimum of 20 to go. I use a treadmill daily and am up to 60 minutes at 5mph. Without this site, the bookkeeping of counting calories, sodium, cholesterol, saturated fats and fiber would be near to impossible. This site makes it easy. I'm enjoying the challenge of creating low fat/low sodium recipes and knowing exactly what the numbers are for each portion. I had a blood test in January and my numbers improved since the previous test in Aug. Looking forward to another test in 2 months and hoping to see the numbers in normal range.8

Welcome, new participants in the thread: I hope we'll see more from you regularly on here, as you work your way toward your goals!
Gosh, it's been a while since I posted: June is busy. I've been doing my usual rowing 4 mornings a week, 2 of those days with coaching from the university crew club's coach. The coaching has been super helpful! Those sessions can be a bit longer, and we usually finish with some more intense intervals.
In addition, I've been volunteering 4 evenings a week with our learn-to-row class, sort of an assistant coach role. Now that that's done, I'll be supervising our 2 nights a week open rowing sessions (when members can come out and row, with volunteers to help carry boats and such).
Those go on for the rest of the season (maybe through October?) but I don't necessarily need to be there personally every time.
On the medical front, things are looking less worrisome with the rib pain I've had for months. The physical therapists my osteopath sent me to have a theory that it's related to weird breathing patterns that are causing pain/spasms probably in my diaphragm (!?!), and exercises for that are seeming to help. They're also going to work on some shoulder blade/rib mobility issues that may be contributing.
I also got my 6-month re-CT-scan to look at some small lung nodules that the radiologist thought looked benign, but that were a worry because of my cancer history. It took 22 days after the scan to get the radiologist report this time! But it held good news: No change in the nodules. We'll rescan again in a year. I was hopeful about this, since I have literally zero breathing symptoms, even during pretty intense exercise. Reassuring to have it confirmed, though.
Here's an example of how the rowing looks (faces anonymized except for me, 2nd from right). All the folks in orange are 55+, I and the guy to my right are 60+. (The woman in blue is a Big 10 Champion rower, now in her 30s. One of the fun things about rowing is that people of different strength/skill levels can row together enjoyably.)
Thrive on, everyone . . . and let us know how you're doing, eh? :flowerforyou:

Hang in there, my friends.
That's good news, @alteredsteve175! It's great to hear from you. Hang in there yourself, OK, and check in when you can.
All the best!3 -
Glad to hear the good news @AnnPT77 . I think I'd love rowing, always liked the rowing machine at the gym & while growing up, one of my brothers always had a boat & we went to the lake a lot. I loved to water ski & generally be on the water. Welcome @chiquitabananna1 good to have you here. I'm not on here as much as I like because I can't find it most of the time. I found it on my "alert" thingy for when there's new comments then after i read it, it disappears but when I type in the name of the group on search, it doesn't come up. I don't have much news here, it's going to be super hot starting on Tuesday. We are pet sitting our grand dog since last Thursday & she' s going home today. She's a Golden doodle & lots of energy. I took her for a walk this morning but didn't take any of mine after because it was already too warm. I am planning to go for a swim at the gym after I get off here because I'm bored & too hot to do outdoorsy things & I need to get out. After that I'm planning to make 2 dinners which should last for some days & we can choose which to eat when. I can eat the same thing all week but husband likes a little variety & I don't want to spend couple hours cooking each day. I'm glad he likes left overs. I've been maintaining for 7 years & up starting to inch up to my maintenance weight. I have a 5lb range up or down & have been on the lower end. I've had more of an appetite lately, which is weird because during the summer is when I have less of an appetite so I'm going to do my best to control that. Thant's about it here5

@Evamutt, you can bookmark this thread to make it easier to find.
In web browser MFP, click on the little ribbon-looking thing at the upper right of the thread's posts (circled in red below). That creates the bookmark. Then, when you want to look at the thread, you can click on "Bookmarks" (also circled) anywhere in the MFP Community that you can see it, and it will give you a list of all threads you've bookmarked.
In phone/tablet MFP, creating the bookmark is the same. What is different is that to see the threads you've bookmarked, you first click on your avatar photo at the upper right on most pages, then "Bookmarks" will be on the list of options for you to click.
Here's how you bookmark (circled), and the avatar photo (at arrow) on my phone.
Here's what comes up when you click on the avatar photo, with the "Bookmarks" option circled.

The loss of the newsfeed hit me harder than I expected.
That and a certain (redacted) has me feeling like MFP doesn’t really care.
I’m still logging. And trying. But really really not feeling good about it right now.
I'm sorry the situation has become that way, @MargaretYakoda . You make really good contributions here on the MPF Community, including about certain things about which few (maybe no?) others have expertise. I hope you won't become too discouraged.
I had a small group on my newsfeed.
Many haven’t logged in for days.
But I am moving past the change.
I have shifted to logging my diet on another app. I find it works better for me, but unless someone asks specifically I don’t think I will be salty about the change, or the advantages of the other app in these forums.
The folks who have chosen to move on have mostly done so. The new folks won’t know the difference. Time changes everything.
My motivation in participating in these forums is to share knowledge and maybe help others. I have realized that doesn’t need to change.
Anyway. Very glad to hear your good health news.
It’s good to also hear that others here are keeping on track as best they can. Kudos to everyone.
News from my family is that I got a bathing suit. First one in decades. And it’s not a plus size. Merely an XL. And I could probably have squeezed into an L.
I’ll head to the beach as soon as the clouds clear. Should have been yesterday but the weather is taking its own sweet time to decide it’s summer here.
Also, a few days ago I got a message asking if I wanted a kitten. Which, heck yes.
And so the past 3 days my time has been spent getting Oliver integrated into the household.
He’s 8 weeks and very snuggly (for a kitten)
I have leash trained almost all my cats (except for one boy who hates the outside) so Oliver is going to be a traveler.
This is a foreshortened angle, but his murder-mittens are disproportionately large. I think he might grow up to be a very big boy.
And here he is snuggling up on my husband’s lap.

@MargaretYakoda. The loss of the Newsfeed has made me very sad also. I found this thread while searching for some of my old friends.
I wonder what the reasoning was for getting rid of it?
On a separate note, your kitten is adorable!1 -
Nice to see everyone here! There were no posts for 10 days, thought everyone abandoned MFP! Good news on your medical front, @AnnPT77. You can breathe easier now, even though you said you had no issues on that, meant in a relaxation way . And @alteredsteve175 glad to see you here. I've finally focused on a better mindset too, after I got back from a vacation where I gained about 6 pounds It was hard to get back into the swing of things! Finally there, and enjoying the progress. Scary part is I'm headed to a remote bush camp for the summer again, where all the other people are half my age or younger, and all like big meat and potato type meals. Not big vegetable eaters. Think I'll be prepping my own food! Love the kitty pics above, and envious of dog walkers, I don't have a dog right now but have been looking, for just the right one. Hope all of you keep up the posts here, I skip the home page with no news feed any more, and after logging my food I come here, to see how everyone is doing! Be safe, be happy, be healthy!

I was able to find ya'll because there were new comments. Nothing new to say except I took my grand dog home from her visit with us since last Thursday. I wanted to take her to the dog park with us this morning before she went home. It wasn't easy. She's high energy so I tethered her in the back of the suv so she wouldn't jump out soon as I opened the door at the dog park. I got my 6 dogs out first then went to get her out. I have to be careful because when she runs she doesn't pay attention & can run into me. I felt bad taking her home because she spends most of her time outside. They let her in the air conditioned laundry room that opens to the garage on hot days. Our dogs have the run of the house & each have their favorite spots inside to relax. I don't know why people get dogs if they keep them outside4

HAPPY CANADA DAY! 🇨🇦
Hey all, I am here and also miss the Newsfeed, but not enough to switch apparently, or at least not yet! I did pay for premium membership early in the year, so will let it ride for now. Plus I have many recipes and meals I've created, and don't have the heart to start over with them lol.
Had a family BBQ yesterday for Canada Day (Canada day eve) 😉 and today after finishing tidying up I decided to make a fish chowder (another new recipe added) vs eating leftovers - tomorrow will be leftover day 😋.
My weight has been slowly coming down (yay!) and I find that as long as I am in full control of my food, I can do it - but when I am away, not so much. And if I do stray (rarely above maintenance), I gain, and even 2 lbs can take weeks to go again, sigh. No fair 🙃
I am also trying to bring my whole life into alignment; food, fasting, sleeping, activity, water; to promote health and weightloss. This has been a very gradual process. I was down almost 50 lbs 2 years ago, then slowly regained maybe 12 lbs over the next year, and a further 5 or so by last Xmas - but this year I am down 15 and almost back to where I was, and hope to pass that point this Summer but will be away 10 days end of Juky/early August so we'll see. That vacation we will be in a family motel kitchenette unit, so I am hopeful ☺️ but snacks and treats are always plentiful and on hand, and adult beverages more appealing, so if I can at least hold the line I will consider that a victory.
I keep thinking about how heavy water jugs are, 5 gallons = 42 lbs, and that I have put one down finally! I hope to not take 3 years to put down the next one lol.7 -
@alteredsteve175 Good to see you back!
@BCLadybug888 Belated Happy Canada Day! ❤️ 🇨🇦 I feel like any time I go off course, I gain. And it takes forever to lose. I previously lost 90 pounds and gained 20 back. Losing those 20 have been harder than I could have imagined! But we persist, so at least we haven't given up. And oh yes, the adult beverages are always a temptation.
@Evamutt I agree with you on the "outside dog" people. I realize that there are dogs who prefer being outside due to their breed instincts (livestock guardian dogs like Pyrenees, for example), but generally speaking, why get a dog if it's not going to be part of your family? I'm still trying to wrap my head around having SIX dogs though 😆 I have two larger dogs and often look after one of the grand-dogs, so that's quite enough doggy-ness for me haha
I'm still plugging away at a 0 to 5k program. I started it 3 months ago but between holidays and other weak excuses, I fell behind. I can now run for 25 minutes straight. Will I out run a bear on the trail? Heck no. Is it pretty to watch? Again, heck no. But doing the program all the way through is a little gift to myself for turning 65 🙂5 -
Last Thursday was my last day of work so this is my 1st week of retirement, but this isn’t a typical week with the 4th in the middle of it. I am switching to a newer computer so that took up most of my time yesterday. We had to file for a tax extension due to my mother’s death last year and estate taxes being delayed. So, I will have to work on taxes again now too. I am finding I really can’t set up a healthy routine but that doesn’t mean I can’t improve things. We have a small family trip later in the month and my family will be gone 1 weekend too but I am staying home. I will concentrate on working on things so that I can establish a better schedule next month. I will for now look to improve meals and upping exercise and activity level.
I will be logging food but it really isn’t calories that I am concentrating on. I have a good sense of how much I can eat but it is really what I eat that I find is important to me to lose weight. I have been researching what foods are good for me and which to avoid. Some food with healthy fats and fruits are high in calories but they are what I need now. Of course, vegetables are important, and I will make sure I get enough protein. I am hoping to up exercise ever week. I have osteopenia so although I will continue with Aquafit I am adding in more weight bearing/training exercise. Anyway I have been able to lose when I don’t work full time by being able to cook and exercise more. I gain when I am working full time. However that doesn't mean I don’t have to work at it.
@Siashini My son lives in Houston and they had that weird windstorm that has hurricane force winds go through his neighborhood this late spring. They only lost their electricity for just under a week and had a leaning fence but several trees in their neighborhood had trees fall on them. However, there was a heat wave too so they had to move to a hotel. Not easy with a baby. They are looking more seriously to move back here to the PNW.
@iclark04957 I am working at getting more active again. I just retired the last week in June.
@meleaherrin I do not have even pre-diabetes but my blood sugar levels are higher than before. I have arteritis pain in my knees too. So have some limitations with getting stronger.
@AnnPT77 I am encouraged by your relating how getting your weight to a healthy level helped your osteoarthritis. I agree that exercise is optional for weight loss but for me it is the combination of cooking/eating healthy meals at home and exercise that works for me. However exercise is needed as well for other health issues too.
@Evamutt I am 71 and I felt myself getting weaker since I turned 70 too. I am going to work at getting my activity and exercise up. I feel too that I want to know why about this and other health issues. I feel that some medical treatment. Doesn’t hit the cause but only the symptoms. I think that @AnnPT77 makes a good point about de-training when we are older and getting back our stamina more slowly. I have had some surgery too a while ago and although I recovered well when I got busy at work and didn’t exercise as much I really feel a lot weaker and don’t get back my stamina as easy.
@iclark04957 Glad you had a good week of restart.

Hi, All -
She said my cholesterol levels are "phenomenal", which is pretty wonderful: One of the things that got me to commit to weight loss was high cholesterol plus not wanting to take a statin.
This is what I am doing now. I have always had higher cholesterol even when I was thinner and fitter. But I am now planning to try and lower it naturally without starting on statins. They have learned more about cholesterol from when I 1st started working on trying to lower it. They used to have you stop eating foods with cholesterol which are healthy for you like eggs. It is really those foods that cause your body to produce it that you need to avoid like those with unhealthy fats (trans fat etc.). Yes there are some fats that I will be avoiding but I am not going to avoid good fats. I will be trying to lose weight and get more exercise.1 -
Congrats on fully retiring @KeriA! And the new computer 🙂, sounds like you have a good grasp of what you want to accomplish next, much success to you as you implement and refine your plan.0
-
@ridiculous59, cannot stop imagining you prettily running away from a bear down some trail now 😆 🤣3
-
@BCLadybug888 , there are many methods to use when you can't count calories away from home. I do the one plate method but there are more. Many good ideas from "Half Size Me" on you tube, you can look it up by the playlist.Welcome to retirement @KeriA . I got laid off from my full time job of 15 years in 2013 than worked privately till couple months ago but very part time. Today is the first day of the heat wave here. We went to the dog park for 1.5 hours, it was nice in the shade & there was a little breeze too so I'm glad to know we can keep going there in the heat but I'm not planning to walk around neighborhood till it cools off2
-
@KeriA I forgot to say congratulations on your retirement!! I retired five years ago and quite honestly, I don't know how I found time to work haha My days are filled, but they're filled doing things that are important to me. A wise woman told me not to commit to anything the first year that you retire. Give yourself some time to figure out where you want to spend your time because once people hear that you're available, everyone will want a piece of you!5
-
Hello everyone, today I met a good friend at John's incredible pizza for lunch. We met there because neither one of us wants or can spend too much eating out & personally I don't like to eat out at all but we needed to be inside in this heat where we can take our time. We had a good visit. I don't like pizza & rarely eat pasta so I had a huge salad, a baked potato & chicken nuggets plus a small bowl of soft serve ice cream. I couldn't find the amount of their calories so I used McDonalds calories. I'm so full. Not used to eating nuggets or anything fried really. I'm not planning to eat anything else today6
-
@Evamutt Glad you had a nice meet up with a friend. Sometimes I eat something out too, that is not on a list and I have to make my best guess on the calories and macros. I look in the list for a similar generic entry, and pick something on the higher end of calories and macros I'm trying to watch, hoping I catch it with fairly decent comparison. And if that is the only thing I couldn't log closely that day, I enjoyed it, and it's a one time indulgence.3

Sometimes its rough to be over 60 mentally. I was a work the other afternoon and when I got up my back which had not been hurting at all stabbed me "in the back" literally. I went on to play tennis even with that and my knee upset from tennis the previous week but it just felt so discouraging that I would have to deal with weeks of recovery from "pains" again. I certainly miss the age where things healed up in days or a week vs months. I don't whine about things to people much because then all I would do is whine I suppose about one thing or another but it is wearing. Like most of you I just soldier thru. lurking and reading here. Miss the newsfeed a ton altho I just had a small group of friends. Seeing the 5 day updates or exercises or closing diary was more incentive and famly than I realized.8
-
@SummerSkier I agree, we don't bounce back like we used to! I pretended it wasn't so but eventually had to give up that dellusion 🙁 I never used the newsfeed to connect with friends. Instead we created a private group within the Community and we connect through that. Sometimes daily. Sometimes only weekly. It depends what's going on in our lives at the time. Is that an option for you? So to be honest, I don't miss the newsfeed at all. And the article-portion of it seems to have moved over to the Blog?0

(snip rest of very good post to limit reply length)
@KeriA, congratulations on your retirement! I've found retirement to be a pretty great thing, and hope it will be so for you, too.
I agree with ridiculous59 that it's a good idea to give yourself some time and grace to find a new routine, for a variety of reasons.
For myself, it seemed to take my literal physical body a few months to truly adapt. My job was fast paced, changing topics and activities many times per day, in a fairly high stress environment. I had plenty of fun hobbies I wanted to dive into, and lots of home chores to check off my list. However, at first, I found it hard to immerse myself in something and stay immersed. I'd spend a hour or so on something, then start feeling like it was time to do something else. It took some time for that to wear off, oddly!
You may have different experiences, but I do think it can take a while to find that right new routine. IME, it will happen, and it's not necessary to force it. YMMV.

It's the same for me...takes longer to heal & from some things I don't seem to heal at all, just a new normal. I sure wish I had hobbies/fun things to do at home. I'm very task oriented so when I have to stay home/ inside a lot, like today it's 111 degrees so home/inside all afternoon & I don't know what to do with myself. I did buy a crossword book today . I used to love doing those & I also have coloring books. I only like watching tv in the evening, after dinner. I got us early today & was out walking my dogs by 7:30 then husband & I went grocery shopping. I was in the kitchen a couple hours cutting up veggies to make a veggie salad that will hopefully last the next 4 days. I also divided up the meat we bought, cut some up & sealed them in my food saver/sealer for the freezer I even prepped the meat i bought for the dogs so I can just pop it into the instant pot, add a few things & cook. I enjoy home on days like this when I was busy then I can relax & rest at home although I can't sit still for too long at a time & get up often & do little chores but not "fun" things. I also enjoy listening to the radio/podcasts during the day or music. I used to LOVE to read & want to get back to that2

Hey everyone!
Quick update.
I had a dr visit today. I had promised not to weigh myself until mid July when I restarted this process back in March. (Because I had been demotivated by a long plateau prior to falling off the program)
But I had a dr visit on the 20th, and had a peak at my weight then.
And another Dr visit today…
7 pounds lost in 2 1/2 weeks and almost back to onederland.
Too aggressive!
So. Tonight I had a pizza and some cherries. Not up to maintenance calories, but a couple hundred over what I’d been eating.
I should be back under 200 by the end of this week. Monday for sure.
But I probably won’t get on the scale for a few more weeks.
Also I probably have some steroid shots in my future…. Whiplash sux. And that’s all I can say about it.6 -
@MargaretYakoda, that is wonderful that Onederland is back in your sights! Very motivational and encouraging I'm sure - heck it motivated and encouraged me 😉!2
