I didn’t do much at all today. I didn’t even get dressed. I did do a bit of scrapbooking this evening.
Our power went off this evening, animal interference according to the website. I had already started to run my bath and we have gas heat so I still took my bath. I just used little battery lights. I may have to put those in there more often. I would put them a little neater maybe so they could just stay in there.

I put out the fairy lights in both bathrooms a few Christmas's ago and have left them there. Nice to have just enough light when we go in the bathroom at night without having to turn the bright light on which is connected to a fan that is suppose to be the "quiet one"- It is easier for me to get back to sleep with these as they aren't bright and loud.
It is enough light to see. DH can use that instead of lights/fan with the door open when he gets ready for work( I am NOT a fan of him doing that at midnight or 1 am)
Debbie
We have small light sensitive plug-in lights in various places, including the bathrooms, which come on when it's dark. They provide about the same amount of light as the fairy lights. That way, we can use the toilet and walk out to the kitchen for water in the night without turning on any lights. It's a safety thing.

Today’s gratitude: cool fresh morning air, summer scents and sounds. Oh! What a beautiful morning!
Joe checked the tanks and we risked a load of laundry. Took the tanks down by half so he’ll pump up from the cistern later. When he checked the cistern this morning, most of the creek water he’d pumped into yesterday it was gone. Could the cistern be cracked or leaking? Maybe we’ll know more after he refills it today.
We have no idea when the water guy will come back so no clue how long to get back to normal. I’m trying to hang back and let Joe deal with it, but don’t know what will be his tipping point. When he does tip, he’ll drive over next door and camp out til the neighbor gets home and escort him back here to finish the job. The guy is not irresponsible, just spread too thin. Too many people in this county have water troubles, and he’s only one guy.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Sorry about your water issues. I hope it all gets resolved soon.

I know that all parts of my life, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are affected badly by all that, but I overestimate my ability to handle the messaging on that side, I think. Until I literally woke up angry, dreaming about a reaction I wanted to write to someone in another forum, I didn't realize how angry 😠and upset 😰 I was feeling all the time. It's insidious. So, I went through and removed a number of stressors in my life.
This morning, instead of watching or listening to more news that makes me grind my teeth, or feel angry or anxious, I added a few things to the "done" list, and even worked on the quilt📔yay me! Got a load of laundry 🧺 ready to be put away and a load of dishes🍽️, too. Doing these things isn't boring or added pressure to my day. On the contrary, they bring small bursts of satisfaction, like making the bed,🛏️ and bringing order anywhere I can.

I have to pay attention to health and aged care news because of my job, basically just noting what the issues are.
The other area of news that interests me is infrastructure, particularly the connection between infrastructure and cycling. For example, when I organise cycling events, I need to know the condition of the roads but I will occasionally get involved in advocacy discussions as I hold roles on cycling committees and have been actively involved in cycling for decades.
As for the rest of the news, I adopt the position that if it doesn't involve me, I ignore it. I don't read the articles, I don't watch news on TV, I don't listen to news on the radio.
My husband reads a lot of news and gets all anxious about things, but I ask him, "Will that affect us?" No? "Then we don't need to worry about it."
Maybe that's a "ostrich" approach, but it helps keep me sane.
Plus I'm too busy with other stuff to devote much time to news.

Heather - When is your next surgery date? It must feel nice to be able to move about freely.
I have such a hard time listening to podcasts. My mind tends to wander too much.
Lisa - I’m so happy that you are starting to see some improvement.
The labor market here is very funny. If you talk to employers, they can’t get good people, if you talk to job seekers they don’t get calls. I think truly one of the problems is lazy people use AI to help with their resumes and cover letters then the employers software chooses those people based on key words, while the people that are looking and sincere, good workers are still trying to be honest about their accomplishments. It’s a truly miserable, frustrating process.
It’s good that you recognize those things can affect your mood so easily. During Covid I was coming home from work and Rodger was angry and worked up most of the time. Heather would go on and on about what was happening and I realized that he was watching CNN and Fox News all day while I was at work. I told him he needed to shut it off. Of course, being him it took a few days of me saying that his mood was being affected by news from another country before he finally changed the station, but it sure made a difference when he did.
Is there any chance Kelsey and her crew will be able to visit soon?
Annie - I have read a couple of Jennifer Cruisie books. I need to get some more of hers too. I also really enjoyed Susan Elizabeth Phillips but haven’t seen anything by her lately. Her main female characters always seemed to get themselves in some comical situations.
I would check drawers and tucked away places for the cloth. My Aunt started making messes and trying to hide the evidence as her Alzheimer’s progressed. They have times of clarity and get embarrassed.
I agree about the short length of elections here in Canada, sometimes those few weeks are too long.
Machka - are you getting movers for the beds and things?
Pip - I admire your dedication and perseverance.
Debbie - I think I’m going to put something up in there permanently. I wish they were electric though, the batteries die pretty quick.
Barbara - I don’t know why some employers refuse to hire apprentices. I imagine part of it is being “burned” by putting all of that time and effort into a person and them then moving onto bigger and better opportunities.
My nephew took a year of college to be a welder and couldn’t find anyone to apprentice with. Rodger had the same problem in 97, it’s how we ended up in Alberta.
I made burgers with potato chips for supper tonight. It started out on the BBQ but we ran out of propane, so I finished them in a frying pan. They tasted like the burgers at the truck stop! I think the difference was I toasted the buns in another frying pan! I’m so happy I figured that out.
I applied for some more jobs today and did some research into placement agencies. I have a couple I’m going to contact next week. They are in downtown Edmonton, not my favourite place to drive so hopefully I can get appointments the same day. It’s more expensive to take the train down than it is to pay for parking and gas plus the transit system is not very safe anymore.
I am going with Lauryn tomorrow to pick up Michaela from camp. We will leave here around 1200-1230, it is a bit more than a 2 hour drive. It will be a nice little girl trip. Jonah is staying at a friend’s house.
I finished another scrapbook layout today. I’m quite proud of this one. The little door on the right opens to a QR code of Brad Paisley’s Little Moments, the song they were dancing to. Tomorrow is their 5th anniversary. It’s hard to believe. Their 15th anniversary dating and Lauryn’s 13th wedding anniversary is on Monday. Time sure flies.

Tracey - I listen to podcasts while I am washing myself, exercising, or putting on makeup, cooking etc. I used to listen while I was running. They are a great accompaniment to what would be a boring activity. I sometimes put them on when there is something I don't really want to do, like cleaning. I really hope you will listen to The Imperfects one. It is nothing you don't know, but it might give you extra encouragement. Education and knowledge are always worth having. My life would be so much duller without my favourite podcasts. They have changed my life.
The latest Clutterbug podcast/video on YouTube is also great. It's about stretching your boundaries. 15 things. She is a terrific woman, and a Canadian! Like Lisa, I love her accent. She has been through every kind of mill, so her presence is very reassuring and inspiring.
I do keep up with the news, but mainly on the Guardian website. We don't listen much to the BBC news any more, because it is so badly presented. I am a citizen of the world, and need to keep informed and lend my small voice.

Most things we can handle ourselves. I've been pleasantly surprised what fits into our van.
The beds should fit all right ... they're singles or king singles (not sure - the measurements put them somewhere in between).
There will be just a few items that are too big or too heavy for us which will have to be taken by removalists.
We're both getting tired and will be glad when it's done. My body is always a bit sore now - today it's my right shoulder (not sure why) and the left hand that was injured yesterday.Snowflake1968 wrote: »I finished another scrapbook layout today. Machka - I totally agree with your philosophy about the "news." I've also been taking the "Ostrich" approach for quite a while. Rarely any TV and the radio is on for a just short while to get the local news and some background tunes for an hour or two. I did try to watch a TV documentary a couple days ago and every 10 minutes the campaign ads came on. Turned it off after half an hour and it's going to stay off until after the election. I get all the news and entertainment I need from the internet. I try to stay protective of my peace.
Hot Spell ....Looks like we're in for a really hot spell through the first part of next week. Mid to upper 90's. I was busy yesterday taking the hens cold treats and putting ice in their water bowl. Even managed to grab Thelma and Gladys and half submerge them in a bucket of water for several seconds...enough to get their feet, legs and bellies wet. Luckily, their run has shade and a steady (albeit it HOT) breeze blowing through. This too shall pass.
It's in the lower 50's right now, so I have windows open all over the house to draw in as much cool air as possible before I close it down. Should keep it comfortable until 1 or 2 pm when the A/C comes on - I keep it at 72 or a notch above and turn on fans.
Insulin Resistance Test rabbit hole -Watched to a Ben Bickman video yesterday about how to measure insulin resistance just from lipid tests. He says this one is pretty accurate. Divide your triglycerides by your HDL. If it's under 1.5, that's good. Two years ago it was 1.55 and A1C was in the normal range. But last month it measured .9 and yet my A1C had risen a hair, still the prediabetes stage. Go figure. I'm so curious to see how all of this meshes together, hopeful his book will go into depth. If not, I'll email him. Nothing ventured, right?
Just got back from my morning walk. 3/4 of a mile. No traffic on the main road where I go just a little ways. Cool, love the daybreak sounds - birds, traffic noise in the distance. Had the girls out for their morning walk. Thelma found a broken birdie eggshell, likely dropped by a Bluejay and gobbled it right down with Fairy in hot pursuit.
And that's the news. So much to be grateful for.

We're having quite a cold snap here ... a high pressure system is sitting over Tassie making things clear and cold.
We're down near the water, so it's warmer here, dropping to near 0 overnight. But in the middle of the island, they've been breaking records for low temps. Last night was -13C, I think, and they had -12 for 3 nights in a row.
That's OK with me just now because, although we still need the rain, it can wait a week or so. I prefer doing this moving stuff in the dry.

Add me to the list of those who do not watch more than the minimum amount of news on the media. It’s all repeated ad infinitum anyway. And now we will have the never-ending election post mortem to contend with. DH watches enough for both of us 😜 I’m not ignoring it, just don’t need it in my face all the time. Where did all the philanthropic politicians disappear to?

Regarding news ... most of the time we can't DO anything about whatever is happening ... we have to let others sort it out.
And there are always other sides to the story. The news might present one side of the story, but we don't know what else is going on.
For those reasons, if I do hear or read a bit of news, most of the time I don't feel comfortable commenting on it.
There's definitely enough going on in my life, I don't need to get involved in the lives of others I don't know.

Went to Aldi's near me today and stocked up on quite a few items. I think you have to know prices quite well to make sure what you are buying is a good buy.
In the 90's every day here for a week. But, we did get a much needed rain storm last evening.
I watch the news! Try to hear both sides. But, hate the ads.

There is nothing "good" or "bad" about following the news or reading about snakes or rats. What is "good" or "bad" is how I react. I can choose to not watch or read about or talk about things that result in my being angry, stressed, nauseated, afraid, etc. In most cases I can decide what to watch or read.
We, too, are having a heat wave with heat advisories. Happily we woke up early (4:30) so I was able to get out early for a long walk with Annie followed by an hour of puttering in the yard. We'll go out for short times in the yard later in the day but not long enough to be dangerous and no more yard work until tomorrow.
One of the best investments we made in a creature comfort purchase was adding a heat pump to our furnace replacement when we bought our house in 2011. We were fortunate to get a loan with 0% interest if we paid it off in three years, which we did, We tightened our budget belt in order to have years of comfort. We keep the thermostat at 73 during the day and 70 at night and it keeps us comfortable.
We placed our weekly grocery order last night. We'll pick it up at 8 tomorrow morning. I was sure to include plenty of stuff that doesn't require chewing so I won't go hungry after my wisdom tooth extraction on Tuesday.

Hi Ladies. May I jpin your group? I am looking for motivation to kickstart my health again.
A little background. The last 5 years we have literally been in survival mode. It's been a rollercoaster ride of very high, highs & very low lows.
Short version Hubby was diagnosed with CLL Leukemia in 2019 a couple of months after his Dad passed away but then we rode the coaster of happy emotions as our son and his high school sweetheart got married then COVID came & went. We were able to protect my hubby and my 90 year old Daddy from it & so far no one in our family has had it, my Dad had a pipe burst and we had to deal with hiring a plumber & a restoration company for ripping all the carpet & making the repairs hubby wasn't up to. He still did a ton of work there. By this time we were used to "living with cancer" He gets bloodwork every 3 months and until last November was doing great. Will get to that in a minute. My Dad also had an accident, ran into the neighbors house and had temporary dementia for a week, this was one month before Hurricane Ida destroyed our house with us in it. It was all good. No one got hurt and our house is practically brand new now. Daddy didn't get hurt in the car accident either. My childhood dream of having a baby grand piano came true! My upright piano I'd had since I was 7 was damaged in the storm. Our kids have found their own lives & are settling into adulthood. Hubby's CLL flared up in Nov. & up until last week for the past 9 weeks we were driving to Houston every week for treatment at MD Anderson. Happy to report it's working & he's graduated to monthly trips now.
Soooo now we can start getting our lives back. We've been home a year now since the Hurricane. We are still working on interior finishing like backsplash and baseboards. etc. And yes this is the short version.
I was a lifetime WW member and I used to go to the gym. I still work full time and with trying to juggle trips to Houston, working & taking care of my Daddy it's still a lot.
So I was hoping you folks could be my cheerleaders as I hop back on the weight loss train to get my life/health back. Like the folks in the WW mtgs.
Due to all our recent adventures I now have high bloid pressure & high cholesterol which I know could be helped by losing about 30 to 50 pounds.
I don't have the motivation or energy I had before all this happened. I have been gardening and hubby & I do a Yoga DVD each morning.
So there ya have it our #1 country song Lol. Seriously though we have been so blessed on this journey. If I started down that road we'd be here all day. So many people have helped us get this far!
So I'm looking to reset my mindset, get my booty moving and start rebuilding me.
It's going to take baby steps. Maybe micro steps because we are still in a time crunch to get it all in. But. things are starting to feel a little more normal so I think I'm ready to regroup & get out of survival mode.
Ok to join your group?

Hello to all and welcome to the new ladies!
Yes, we here in Southern California are hot too, but not nearly cooking like the rest of you (I’m about 20 miles from the border). I think it was in the low 90s the other day, but since we have limited humidity, it’s bearable. We just open up the house and haven’t had the AC on yet, though our neighbors have. We get a nice breeze off the canyon, so are tolerating it.
The mister is essentially planted on the sofa this month with 2 soccer tournaments. It will get better next week as they get closer to finals.
We were hoping to go to Madagascar this year, but it got cancelled. Trying to decide where now.
Not much to tell. Just hanging in until our guests arrive again next month. They will be here for 3 weeks. They had such a good time last year, they decided to come back again. I guess we need to be less welcoming hosts. I’ll do a lot differently this time. I love them, but three extra people for that long is a lot.

Hello, my chickens,
Tracey - No, nothing scheduled to see Kelsey or any of the grands. 😔 I have a faint hope that she might drive up while she's in San Antonio for a couple weeks later this summer, but it's more than eight hours' drive and she has to get a special pass to be more than 50 miles from the school.
In my last post, I probably should have said more clearly that I don't believe that news, in and of itself, is bad for EVERYone. I was allowing it to upset me emotionally and mentally, which was inevitably impacting my physical issues, and literally making me ill.
I'm not proud of that, but not ashamed of it either. It's kind of a shrug, and definitely an easy fix - simply separate myself from that flood of information. Anyone who can and wants to be part of it certainly has that choice, without any reproach from me. I just have to be realistic about my own reactions.
The house smells wonderful--Corey is roasting tomatoes, onions, garlic and carrots for his next batch of marinara--I need to slide out and get some basil later to add to his final version. That's as stressful as it gets today around my house. In other words, not at all.
Later y'all,
Love, Lisa8 -

Carlakringuette, absolutely okay for you to join our group! This is a fast moving thread and we are a chatty bunch, please don’t feel the need to comment on everything, just jump into any conversation that strikes you. Also please sign each post with a name and location so we can get to know you. The name doesn’t have to be yours and the location can be as specific or general as you are comfortable with. You certainly do have a lot on your plate but sounds like you are handling it admirably! This is a very supportive group and we do chat about way more than weight related issues, it’s all connected, right?
Barbara, I was not aware of any earthquakes in our area! The only one that I’ve felt since moving into this house was actually heard, not felt. We are on the side of a mountain so all rock underneath us. The earthquake sounded like a large truck hitting the side of our house, which if you saw our house you would know is impossible! There is no road on that side, only 20 or so acres of forest, lol. But it was an experience!
I have been reading but not replying or even taking notes….. but there are a few things I did want to comment on.
Heather, your recovery is truly sparing and it fills me with joy seeing and reading about your progress and the joy you are experiencing!
Lisa, so glad that Corey decided that throwing some money at the tree was the right thing to do!
Tracey the fairy lights in the bathroom are lovely!
Hubby comes to bed long after I’m asleep so uses a small flashlight to negotiate his way. If I wake up and it’s still dark I feel my way to the bathroom. It’s quite easy, hand along the foot of the bed, when I reach the end the hand goes out to touch the wall, over two steps to the doorway, then hand on the counter til I reach the end and then I’m at the toilet. As long as I’ve got one hand on a stationary object (bed, wall, counter etc) I’m good. I usually sleep thru the darkest part of the night, especially this time of year, and we do get enough morning sunlight by about 4 am to be able to see. Please note, I’m only up long enough to use the facilities at that time of day, lol!!
That’s it for now, off to the gym for me! Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the new gals!

stayed home from going to MIL's to walk her dog today- Instead, got caught up on the dishes. Had to get them done and put away for the next big, WET, chore on my list. Gave the kittens yet another flea bath. The flea treatment drops did NOTHING- just requested a refund from Amazon- Third bath since we brought them in. Second one of doing it totally by myself. First one son and his girlfriend helped with one kitten but got scratched up so I did the rest. I used Dawn dish soap this time- see if that works better than the flea shampoo or the flea drops. They are all sleeping now. I am sure they feel a lot better.
Planned on working in the garden- need to get my cucumbers and tomatoes tied up- bought a little contraption that is supposed to be simple to do that but I haven't figured out how to use it- Think I can do it by hand faster than using that thing- I will watch the how-to video yet again and see if I can figure it out.
Dh wants me to go with him to Tractor Supply and Walmart- needs things for his mom(she needs dog food from TS and a new fan from W beings she broke yet another one. Always something with her.
Aqua Zumba was wonderful last night- got there a bit early and they let us stay after. It was "Free swim" and all the kids got to get in the pool so we didn't stay too long but was nice to be able to. If it was as hot as it was Tuesday, we would have stayed longer I think. Going to miss it when it ends end of Aug.
