I found it too daunting to read all the posts I have missed. I hope I haven’t missed anything momentous.

Vicki: That is so heartless of your current employers, after all you have done for them. However, it may be a blessing in disguise. You were so stressed by that job.

A combination of our working holiday and getting our booster jabs on Thursday sapped my energy, but a restful weekend has been restorative. DH has gone out birdwatching, and I have a quiet morning planned before I go to Monday Painters after lunch.

Heather: Belated Birthday greetings. You look radiant.

🤗🤗🤗 and 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for those who need them.

🙋‍♀️ Miele failte to the newbies.

    Good morning beautiful ladies!

Rita hope your back brace reduces pain and enables movement. Have you gotten the brace yet?

Machka that's a good idea to bring it downstairs a bit at a time. Maybe not today because my cousin is coming over, but later this week.

Not much going on today. My cousin will talk religion with my dad and I will try to escape. I wanted to buy muffins but I had a lazy day yesterday.

I'm reading a haunted house novel that reminds me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Everytime the heroine turns around the gloomy house is creaking at her.

Have a great day! May you be happy, healthy, safe, and free!

Nice to see you back, Terri! I was beginning to worry about you. <3

Cleaner comes today, a bit later because she was held up getting to her first job. John has gone off to get the car MOTd.
It's miserable weather here. I'm not tempted out, despite having still got my birthday voucher from M&S. I've been looking online for inspiration, but ours is only a tiny store IRL with a big food dept. They hardly ever have my size.

One big win today is that I typed my book directly on to my laptop. Did nearly 500 words. First time in ages that I've typed from scratch on it. Obviously, it's much better not having to transfer it. I save it to Dropbox. I'm deliberately thinking of it as a rough version and have labelled the document as such. Up to around 8, 000 words now. :D I'm writing about failing to get into Oxford, which seemed devastating at the time and for years afterwards, but I met my husband at Bristol University and that led to my children and grandchildren. Can't imagine life without them

I've nearly cooked my halloumi curry for dinner. Just got to add the fried halloumi and spinach for ten minutes. I can't be bothered with cooking anything complicated in the evening, so it has to be all prepared after lunch.

Starting to plan food for John's birthday. He's not bothered about going out, and we're eating out at the weekend when DSIL comes to stay. Chicken Caesar Salad for lunch and the authentic Spaghetti Carbonara for dinner. I bought the guanciale and pecorino a while ago.
I've got him 5 presents to open in bed and made him a card. Still got to wrap the presents. I made a large contribution to his main present some time ago, which was a turntable for his vinyl. He's enjoying playing through his collection.

Love to all. Heather UK xxxxxx.

    Now for a nap! :D

Machka-unemployment sounds like it works differently in the US than in Australia. Retirement through a company is not guaranteed. Many will only have Social Security. To get that full benefit you must be full retirement age, which is currently 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. Many of the hospitals are not affiliated with the government. Some, like Ohio State University Hospitals receive state retirement option. Others, like our local Mercy Health most likely offer some sort of 401 k or similar. Add in to that that many of our states are "employment at will", unless you are hitting one of the discrimination categories, you may not have many rights.

Carol -your GD is indeed growing up! Very lovely. Glad you are adjusting to new computer.

    Back to chores!

Heather ~ Thanks for the compliment on my granddaughter. They might look a bit like me, but, I am only 5' 1" and they are both tall like their mom and dad. Granddaughter is all legs in that photo.

Happy belated birthday to you! The family dinner party looks like you are all having a great time!

Beth ~ So good to hear that your in-plant is working so well. My new hearing aids are not perfect but they are so much better than the ones I replaced. I agree that sometimes I am overwhelmed with the loud noise they pick up.

In the UK Vicki would get one week's pay for each of her 37 years of service. So, not too far off a year's pay. I remember her saying she was really continuing to work for the health insurance as well as paying off debts. 😒

Picking up Bea tomorrow. It looks like a dry and warmer day. I hope to make it again - the damp weather played havoc with my joints today. And my motivation. Tomorrow is another day. I have to find a few minutes for present wrapping sometime.

    MFP Weekly Check-In for October 14, 2024

Sue in WA State - Have had a difficult week with breathing. I do OK while in the water and chair yoga was not too bad but feeding goats and horses and walking around the property has me wheezing. I have been trying to do 2 minute walks and am really out of breath by the end. Weight has remained the same. I am really tired by afternoon and then I eat believing it will give me energy. I know in my mind this is not true but still succumb to eating. I need to drink water and rest but don't want nap at that time of day or I won't sleep at night. Maybe if I sit and read instead.

Rita in Roswell NM -Down .3 of a pound from last week. Slow but steady wins the race! All time high 210, lowest since joining MFP, 145. Started at 186 this time. Today I’m at 171.6 Not bad! Just have to keep eating like I am forever! LOL

Lanette SW WA State – 7th week staying at 158. I just realized this is close to what I weighed when I graduated from high school, except back then I thought I was obese when it was mostly muscle. :( Not as much muscle today, and there's gravity, but it's a goal. So I'm staying at my set point weight-wise and am content with that. Still “house walking” and doing calf/hamstring and various foot stretches. Getting exercise doing chores outside which will wind down when the weather changes.

I'm just talking about when they close an area and lay people off ... not retirement.

Here, in Vicki's situation, she'd get the 5 weeks notice and at least 12 weeks severance pay just for being laid off because her area is closing. Then if she is over 62 and decides to retire, there's the Superannuation which is a whole lot more money. After 37 years she could be looking at 300,000 or 400,000. Plus the weekly pay for retiring (not much).

If she didn't want to retire (because you get more money if you wait till your official retirement date) ... she'd go onto Unemployment Insurance (Centrelink).

My husband's official retirement date was his 65th birthday. Mine will be my 67th birthday.

Most hospitals are public here but a few are private.

Had a good, productive time at mom's over the weekend, got home at 9 this morning. Shopped with dh-(oh has he been a joy-NOT)has a pissy comment to every single thing I have said since I got home. He is very resentful that I was gone for the weekend- I go to mom's one weekend a month if that. He took a nap for most of the afternoon, got up, got his shoes on and walked out the door- not one word to me at all, going to his mom's. Such an *kitten*.
But, at mom's, I helped at the food program. They were down quite a few volunteers so glad I was there to help. Came back and made lunch for mom and I. While she napped, I shampooed the carpets in the bedrooms. I brought the big shampooer up this time instead of just the spot one(that one seemed to make the stains worse. She is totally thrilled how they look. Made a nice salmon dinner that night. Sunday I went to see my aunt(dad's last sibling-last of 10 kids) for 2 1/2 hrs until it was time to pick mom up from church. She napped that afternoon while I picked veggies to bring home. Made steak dinner for us that night then we dusted the cats with diathamatious earth for the fleas. The fleas are terrible- brought in by the room mates' dog we think as he is the only one that went outside. Mom's cats never go outside. I ordered flea bombs and asked her neighbor to set them off for her. I also talked to mom about seeing her doctor about her memory loss- It is getting much worse and it is getting annoying to her so she is very open to talk with him. I may have to remind her plus I will let a friend that takes her to some of her appointments know and she can also remind her.

No class today because of the holiday- with dh's mood, kind of wish I did have class- but then again- don't want to push it too much.

Time to try and catch up on what all you ladies did over the weekend and also get all the cats fed before he gets back.

Know you are in wine country when you can smell the crush- was totally dark driving up but smelled it all the way through St. Helena, Coming home this morning, followed a dump truck full of pomace(skin/seeds/etc left over after crush) for a long part of the drive. Hopefully they get the rest of the grapes in before we get more rain . We had rain all day Saturday- split a lot of the ripe tomatoes at mom's.

Machka-US layoff rules don't tend to be as generous as yours. Unemployment is frequently all that workers get.

Carol – you never mentioned that your granddaughter was a model!

Bowling today. They’re celebrating the birthdays in Sep. and Oct. Afterwards, we go for our flu shots and then Vince wants to go to Lowe’s Hardware for more wire wraps (for decorating).

Lisa – I, too, can’t wait for this election to be over. All the calls! Thank goodness I record almost all of my shows so I can fast forward thru those commercials

Rita – it looks like that afghan is a few strips put together, am I right? I think that might be called “mile a minute”

Allie – Boy, is she getting bigger and bigger all the time Good idea that picture book

Deb and any other cat owner – we have a Halloween tree and the kittens have come close to destroying it. We had this spray stuff that if you spray it on wires, the cats stay away. I tried it on my craft light wire which they were constantly pulling down and they don’t go near it. So Vince sprayed the tree, no luck. They have been climbing all over it. Anyone else have an idea of what to spray on it to keep the cats away? We’ve done searches on amazon saw some items, but has anyone had special luck with anything?
