I found it too daunting to read all the posts I have missed. I hope I haven’t missed anything momentous.
Vicki: That is so heartless of your current employers, after all you have done for them. However, it may be a blessing in disguise. You were so stressed by that job.
A combination of our working holiday and getting our booster jabs on Thursday sapped my energy, but a restful weekend has been restorative. DH has gone out birdwatching, and I have a quiet morning planned before I go to Monday Painters after lunch.
Heather: Belated Birthday greetings. You look radiant.
🤗🤗🤗 and 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for those who need them.

Dropping in. Will catch up. Between weather, building, work, illnesses at work, and vacation, I have been neglectful. Mentally, I am doing better. I will catch up later.
Hugs and prayers for any in need.
Congratulations to successes!
Have missed you all.
Much love,
Kylia from Ohio, but currently back in Tennessee for a few days.7 -

I don't suppose it is the same where she lives.

It's the first step of how they reduce the workforce here ... asking if anyone would like to volunteer for redundancy. Lots of older people do volunteer because they can get quite a decent amount of money which allows them to retire early or pop the money into the bank and find another job ... maybe pick up something part-time, take on consultancy work, or start their own little business.
I would be surprised if she gets anything more than two weeks' pay, and I'm not sure they have to do that. It's immoral.
Vicki, I'm so very sorry that this is happening to you. It's just horrible.
Much love to you. Be gentle with yourself. This is a huge shock.

I looked it up, and here, someone like Vicki would get a minimum of 5 weeks notice and a minimum of 12 weeks pay. Or if it was not possible to give 5 weeks notice, then the pay would increase.
A government position (like working for a hospital) would likely pay more, especially if it were a department closure.
Anything less is indeed horrible!Whidislander wrote: »(although I knew a Tupper lady who would cook corn on the cob by pouring boiling water into a large Tupperware bowl. SMH.

Boiling water on raw corn? Reminds me of that 1980's movie "Wargames" where the Realtor mom decides to serve raw corn on the cob. 😂😂 The father takes a bite nearly choking, "but its raw" he exclaims. "Yes, can't you just taste all the nutrients?", says the wife.... Lol!

Made me chuckle ... because one of the highlights of our Canada trip was corn on the cob! So much corn on the cob!
Corn on the cob was being harvested and everywhere we went, we were served corn on the cob.
Fortunately, I like corn on the cob, but my digestive system was a little unhappy.LisaInArkansas wrote: »Hey, kiddos,
Did it, did it, did it! Woot! Not to the level that I WILL, but to a level where I was at least willing to post it where people can see it. I posted my first YouTube video today! My video editing skills are at the baby steps level... and my first one was literally one minute and 28 seconds, so we're not talking great content here, but I'm so pleased to get anything up and running.
So, my vague pronouncements re: my procrastination project were that I've been teaching myself video editing for about a month now. Shooting the videos is easy... it's taking them apart and putting them back together again with music, etc., that's hard. There's a reason why the first one is so short! 👀😹😂
Anyway, that's what the entire morning was spent doing... and makes more sense of what one of the youtubers that I watch noted - that the average ends up at an hour of editing per minute of video. A lot more for me right now, but it will get better.
I thought my brain was going to absolutely break a couple times, but even at 64, I CAN still learn new things. I will post one later, when they're in better shape and I'm more pleased with the versions I'm posting. Hope it's been a good day for you, too... I'm going to go do something pointless (OK, MORE pointless... 😹) and relax.
Later,
Love,

Well done!
When my husband (before he was my husband) came to live with my parents and me in Canada for about 6 months, I was attending uni to get my B-Ed. One of my assignments was to produce a video, so we worked on it together. I produced the script and general idea, he filmed me and us, and then we compiled it all with software (don't remember the name of the software).
The result was like a Black & White silent movie on Nonverbal Communication. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere.
Ah ha! Found it!

Happy Birthday!
Huge servings! I found that every restaurant we visited in Canada had huge servings like that. My husband and I started ordering an appetiser to share and a salad each.
On restless legs and cramps in the night ... I find I get cramps in my legs, feet, and toes in the night if I have not drunk enough liquid during the day. So, I'll often drink a tall glass of water shortly before bed to ward them off. Yes, I get up 2 hours later to use the toilet, but better than than the cramps!
I find I get the restless legs when I have done more exercise than I've done recently. So for example, I could be in danger of restless legs tonight because I climbed 2 flights of stairs and did more walking than I've done in the whole week before (and I didn't do a lot of walking today). I'll make sure I have my glass of water before bed and I'll also take a magnesium pill. Hopefully that will ward them off, but you never know.
I am still not feeling great, but life goes on. Still fighting to breathe well, still coughing a bit, still blowing my nose once in a while, but I am better than I was last Monday!
Yesterday, we went to our bee club meeting which was really good. Then we picked up a number of plants for the front garden. They'll go in a bit later.
Last night, I didn't sleep well, so I planned out the front garden in my head while lying in bed. I refuse to get up if I'm not sleeping. I will remain in bed, lying down, in the dark, usually with my eye mask on.
And today, I went to work for the first time 6.5 weeks. Exhausting. So many emails.

Good morning beautiful ladies!
Rita hope your back brace reduces pain and enables movement. Have you gotten the brace yet?
Machka that's a good idea to bring it downstairs a bit at a time. Maybe not today because my cousin is coming over, but later this week.
Not much going on today. My cousin will talk religion with my dad and I will try to escape. I wanted to buy muffins but I had a lazy day yesterday.
I'm reading a haunted house novel that reminds me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Everytime the heroine turns around the gloomy house is creaking at her.
Have a great day! May you be happy, healthy, safe, and free!

Kylia ~ Glad to see you popping in!
Machka ~ Your non-communitive video was interesting. I liked you dark hair.
Annie ~ I loved the movie/book Rebecca! What is the name of the book you are reading that remind you of Rebecca?
Allie ~ Enjoy your cruise and try to stay healthy. Hope you meet some interesting people and see lots of sights.
Love all the photos that have been posted lately! Pip, Barbie, Lisa, Allie...enjoy them all. Here is my granddaughter who went to an event at her school last Friday...
I am getting used to my new Dell desktop! Getting under and up from my computer table multiple times to set it up took a lot out of me. I have had a real problem with my arthritic neck, lower back and general all
over soreness. Makes me realize I need to find some exercises to help my flexibility.

Lanette ... I think I am doing well with the cochlear implant. Anything I stream through bluetooth, I hear exceptionally well. But there are still things I need to improve when not streaming (most of life is not streamed!). For example, while I can understand most men's voices, word discernment with women's voices can be a struggle. Makes sense as I was without the higher tones for decades and that would be the hardest to regain. Auditory training through active listening, audio books, etc. is still the remedy for that. My husband and I took a roadtrip on Friday to do some leaf peeping and I didn't need to turn in my seat and read his lips the whole time (which kind of ruins looking at leaves). We were able to hold a conversation AND I could look out the window. A small thing maybe to most of you, but huge in making a trip enjoyable. My biggest surprise is how noisy the world is!! By the end of the day, I'm turning down the volume on my processor. Auditory fatigue. Lol! But it's all good. Hearing the rain on my umbrella, leaves crunching underfoot, the coffee pot dripping ... these are all things I lost that I have now regained.
And shhh ... we try not to say that four letter "s" word in Buffalo ... but yeah, the temperatures are changing here.
Reading along and thinking of you all!

Nice to see you back, Terri! I was beginning to worry about you.
Cleaner comes today, a bit later because she was held up getting to her first job. John has gone off to get the car MOTd.
It's miserable weather here. I'm not tempted out, despite having still got my birthday voucher from M&S. I've been looking online for inspiration, but ours is only a tiny store IRL with a big food dept. They hardly ever have my size.
One big win today is that I typed my book directly on to my laptop. Did nearly 500 words. First time in ages that I've typed from scratch on it. Obviously, it's much better not having to transfer it. I save it to Dropbox. I'm deliberately thinking of it as a rough version and have labelled the document as such. Up to around 8, 000 words now. I'm writing about failing to get into Oxford, which seemed devastating at the time and for years afterwards, but I met my husband at Bristol University and that led to my children and grandchildren. Can't imagine life without them
I've nearly cooked my halloumi curry for dinner. Just got to add the fried halloumi and spinach for ten minutes. I can't be bothered with cooking anything complicated in the evening, so it has to be all prepared after lunch.
Starting to plan food for John's birthday. He's not bothered about going out, and we're eating out at the weekend when DSIL comes to stay. Chicken Caesar Salad for lunch and the authentic Spaghetti Carbonara for dinner. I bought the guanciale and pecorino a while ago.
I've got him 5 presents to open in bed and made him a card. Still got to wrap the presents. I made a large contribution to his main present some time ago, which was a turntable for his vinyl. He's enjoying playing through his collection.
Love to all. Heather UK xxxxxx.3 -

Machka-unemployment sounds like it works differently in the US than in Australia. Retirement through a company is not guaranteed. Many will only have Social Security. To get that full benefit you must be full retirement age, which is currently 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. Many of the hospitals are not affiliated with the government. Some, like Ohio State University Hospitals receive state retirement option. Others, like our local Mercy Health most likely offer some sort of 401 k or similar. Add in to that that many of our states are "employment at will", unless you are hitting one of the discrimination categories, you may not have many rights.
Carol -your GD is indeed growing up! Very lovely. Glad you are adjusting to new computer.

Well back from the aprn and she is super pleased with my 35lb weight loss and said keep up the good work.

I've always seen my life as a series of chapters--each is different (slightly or dramatically) from the one before. In the years I was teaching, I did a ton of seasonal decorating in my classroom and at home and had holiday themed clothing. Now I do nearly nothing to recognize holidays. Over the years, I've tried and occasionally succeeded with many different crafts. Now I only knit blankets for Project Linus. I used to try exotic recipes and eat at different restaurants near home or while traveling. Now I eat the same things all the time and rarely eat in a restaurant. When I was teaching I spent my days with children. Since I retired I rarely see any children. I've traveled a lot in and out of the US and now I stay close to home. I love hearing all you adventures and creative projects and continue to be happy with my simple life.
Allie, I hope your trip is all you have hoped.
Vicki, what a shock about your job. This is the time to make use of all the spiritual tools in your toolbox.
Carol, your granddaughter is lovely.
I got an email yesterday from a woman who had attended my line dance class in 2017 while she was here on vacation from Alabama.. She was sad to hear that I wasn't teaching line dance now. She is now moving into my neighbourhood (about two blocks from me). We are meeting for a walk this morning.
I have finally dug up all the iris in one part of the yard and plan to replant them them more spaced out starting today.
We have been enjoying DD's gift of Netflix I have been watching The Great British Baking Show.

Morning, my li'l chickadees...
Been a totally interruptory morning... and in fact, had a post all written and walked away and then closed my browser on my return without thinking. Ah well, I was just rattling, anyway!
Slept like a baby after a few minor triumphs in design work yesterday evening, none of which will be visible, but which were bugging me. Never woke when Corey left for work this morning, so I got a "good morning call" about 8 a.m. He reminded me it's our son's birthday, as he knows I seldom know what day it is! 🥰 Texted Johnny, and he called me back on a video call. At best, video calls are annoying... but the five-second lag in that one was just excruciating. 😑🫤 Fun to see his face and talk to him, though. He's excited about starting a writing degree in the next semester, and his partner will be starting on her hospitality certificate in January, as well.
Machka - Loved the video - and your voice sounded exactly like you already sounded in my head. Most unusual. Thanks for sharing it. Liked the sepia tones and silent film era transitions. Might use those... 😁 Glad you're feeling somewhat better, but I'm sure that work is exhausting still.
Heather - Looks like a lovely birthday for you and for the group. Happy birthday to your Johnny, as well. I forgot their birthdays were close together.
Carol - Your granddaughter's beautiful, and Heather's right, she and your grandson have a distinct look of you. Glad to see she's got her boot off, she must have healed up well. I love all the pics, too, animals and people, past and present. If we were all in a room, we'd all be scrolling through each other's phones! The modern-day equivalent of wallet photos that we used to all drag around...
Beth - I can understand avoiding the "S" word - I'm surely not ready for it, but luckily, ours probably won't show up until January! I don't think y'all will be waiting that long... I'm so very glad the implant has given you back the small things that mean so much.
Flea - We don't get a voter pamphlet in Arkansas, either. There are online resources for the information you mention, but figuring out whether they have a bias is always an issue. Early starting begins next week, and I'll be glad to have that over with, as well as to get past the first week of November. I'm getting so many spam calls, my phone's rings half a dozen times an hour, no matter how many I block.
Well... the other interruption earlier was my gut going sideways, but I think it's finally settled. Had to stop yoga twice before I finally gave up and just stayed in the bathroom. There's something about having your head down around your knees that really gets things moving! 👀🫤😹
Been working on the rest of the Monday morning chores between bathroom trips, as well, and it's time to decide whether to hang the towels out on the line or just dry all the whites inside. At 64 degrees, I'll probably just dry them inside. It will get warm enough to dry them outside, but hanging up cold wet towels makes my hands hurt too much to deal with this morning.
First - need to get my meds set up for the week. Hope it is/was/will be a grand day.
Love,

Heather ~ Thanks for the compliment on my granddaughter. They might look a bit like me, but, I am only 5' 1" and they are both tall like their mom and dad. Granddaughter is all legs in that photo.
Happy belated birthday to you! The family dinner party looks like you are all having a great time!
Beth ~ So good to hear that your in-plant is working so well. My new hearing aids are not perfect but they are so much better than the ones I replaced. I agree that sometimes I am overwhelmed with the loud noise they pick up.

Finished my crocheted afghan last night. DH and I really like the way it came out. I’m just sorry that I ran out of yarn before I could make it bigger. Keeping it! Like it too much!
Dinner yesterday was chicken thighs, canned corn mixed with cream corn, and pan fried potatoes with an orange for dessert.

In the UK Vicki would get one week's pay for each of her 37 years of service. So, not too far off a year's pay. I remember her saying she was really continuing to work for the health insurance as well as paying off debts. 😒
Picking up Bea tomorrow. It looks like a dry and warmer day. I hope to make it again - the damp weather played havoc with my joints today. And my motivation. Tomorrow is another day. I have to find a few minutes for present wrapping sometime.

MFP Weekly Check-In for October 14, 2024
Sue in WA State - Have had a difficult week with breathing. I do OK while in the water and chair yoga was not too bad but feeding goats and horses and walking around the property has me wheezing. I have been trying to do 2 minute walks and am really out of breath by the end. Weight has remained the same. I am really tired by afternoon and then I eat believing it will give me energy. I know in my mind this is not true but still succumb to eating. I need to drink water and rest but don't want nap at that time of day or I won't sleep at night. Maybe if I sit and read instead.
Rita in Roswell NM -Down .3 of a pound from last week. Slow but steady wins the race! All time high 210, lowest since joining MFP, 145. Started at 186 this time. Today I’m at 171.6 Not bad! Just have to keep eating like I am forever! LOL
Lanette SW WA State – 7th week staying at 158. I just realized this is close to what I weighed when I graduated from high school, except back then I thought I was obese when it was mostly muscle. Not as much muscle today, and there's gravity, but it's a goal. So I'm staying at my set point weight-wise and am content with that. Still “house walking” and doing calf/hamstring and various foot stretches. Getting exercise doing chores outside which will wind down when the weather changes.

I'm just talking about when they close an area and lay people off ... not retirement.
Here, in Vicki's situation, she'd get the 5 weeks notice and at least 12 weeks severance pay just for being laid off because her area is closing. Then if she is over 62 and decides to retire, there's the Superannuation which is a whole lot more money. After 37 years she could be looking at 300,000 or 400,000. Plus the weekly pay for retiring (not much).
If she didn't want to retire (because you get more money if you wait till your official retirement date) ... she'd go onto Unemployment Insurance (Centrelink).
My husband's official retirement date was his 65th birthday. Mine will be my 67th birthday.
Most hospitals are public here but a few are private.

Hey, kidlin's,
Hope it's been a good day for all... it really got away from me. Sleeping in two or three hours past your usual get-em-up time will do that! Plus the gut never really settled, but I do occasionally have a bad day. This was just one of them. Tomorrow's another day. Just going to relax for the rest of the night, curl up and chill out.
Later y'all,

Had a good, productive time at mom's over the weekend, got home at 9 this morning. Shopped with dh-(oh has he been a joy-NOT)has a pissy comment to every single thing I have said since I got home. He is very resentful that I was gone for the weekend- I go to mom's one weekend a month if that. He took a nap for most of the afternoon, got up, got his shoes on and walked out the door- not one word to me at all, going to his mom's. Such an *kitten*.
But, at mom's, I helped at the food program. They were down quite a few volunteers so glad I was there to help. Came back and made lunch for mom and I. While she napped, I shampooed the carpets in the bedrooms. I brought the big shampooer up this time instead of just the spot one(that one seemed to make the stains worse. She is totally thrilled how they look. Made a nice salmon dinner that night. Sunday I went to see my aunt(dad's last sibling-last of 10 kids) for 2 1/2 hrs until it was time to pick mom up from church. She napped that afternoon while I picked veggies to bring home. Made steak dinner for us that night then we dusted the cats with diathamatious earth for the fleas. The fleas are terrible- brought in by the room mates' dog we think as he is the only one that went outside. Mom's cats never go outside. I ordered flea bombs and asked her neighbor to set them off for her. I also talked to mom about seeing her doctor about her memory loss- It is getting much worse and it is getting annoying to her so she is very open to talk with him. I may have to remind her plus I will let a friend that takes her to some of her appointments know and she can also remind her.
No class today because of the holiday- with dh's mood, kind of wish I did have class- but then again- don't want to push it too much.
Time to try and catch up on what all you ladies did over the weekend and also get all the cats fed before he gets back.

Know you are in wine country when you can smell the crush- was totally dark driving up but smelled it all the way through St. Helena, Coming home this morning, followed a dump truck full of pomace(skin/seeds/etc left over after crush) for a long part of the drive. Hopefully they get the rest of the grapes in before we get more rain . We had rain all day Saturday- split a lot of the ripe tomatoes at mom's.3 -

Carol – you never mentioned that your granddaughter was a model!
Bowling today. They’re celebrating the birthdays in Sep. and Oct. Afterwards, we go for our flu shots and then Vince wants to go to Lowe’s Hardware for more wire wraps (for decorating).
Lisa – I, too, can’t wait for this election to be over. All the calls! Thank goodness I record almost all of my shows so I can fast forward thru those commercials
Rita – it looks like that afghan is a few strips put together, am I right? I think that might be called “mile a minute”
Allie – Boy, is she getting bigger and bigger all the time Good idea that picture book
Deb and any other cat owner – we have a Halloween tree and the kittens have come close to destroying it. We had this spray stuff that if you spray it on wires, the cats stay away. I tried it on my craft light wire which they were constantly pulling down and they don’t go near it. So Vince sprayed the tree, no luck. They have been climbing all over it. Anyone else have an idea of what to spray on it to keep the cats away? We’ve done searches on amazon saw some items, but has anyone had special luck with anything?

Just drove about 500 miles today coming back from a Trip to St. Louis. I did not have a secure network so I didn't post for the last week. Son went with me and we had a great time. Will share and process more tomorrow!5
-
Machka - I find drinking lots helps with my leg cramps as well.
I’ve never taken that much time off at once from a job, I can’t imagine the emails.
Carol - your Granddaughter is beautiful.
Beth - One of our new residents has a cochlear implant, she hears very well when her husband tries to ask any questions about her, she gets angry with him for trying to talk about her, it’s all just so he understands her day but she doesn’t like it. They have been married 66 years and they are struggling with the separation and she is very nasty with him because of it.
Barbie - I think it’s wonderful that you are happy with your life.
When I read through my Grandmother’s diaries I learned how much she truly disliked her house and living where she did for the last 50+ years of her life. If I had been asked before reading her thoughts I never would have said she longed for more. Mostly she wanted to live in town and closer to people, probably more people than her child and grandchildren.
Lisa - your son seems very settled now. I’m with you on video calls, I am not a fan.
Do you have an iPhone? There is a feature that you can send unknown numbers directly to voicemail.
It doesn’t work if you’re expecting calls from unknown numbers though like a doctor’s office.
Rita - that’s a pretty blanket.
Sue - I hope your full breath returns soon. Maybe give into a nap for a couple days to see if it helps you recover faster.
Lanette - I need to start the indoor walking again. There is no reason I can’t now, I have more room in my living room.
Allie - She sure looks like she grew over night. I bet Miles does miss you, he’ll love a picture book I bet.
Debbie - hugs. I wish you were treated better by your husband.
Can you call your mom’s doctors office for her and ask them to note it on her file. That way she won’t have to remember.
Margaret - can’t wait to hear about your trip.
There were 12 of us here for Thanksgiving yesterday, I loved it!
The only problem is everyone leaves so soon after that there isn’t much visiting time. I invited my neighbour and her son, and Raquel and Aspen stayed with us. Can’t believe the 3 day weekend is gone already.
Today I cut and sanded some wood so I can paint some little buildings. I’m going to do one little set for Lauryn with a Halloween theme.
Have a great day everyone.
