Weight does seem to come on so easily. My incentive for weight loss is to get out of the prediabetic range I am currently in.
Weighed myself this morning and back down to my pre-Christmas weight so happy about that. Hoping to be at 175 by the end of January. My weight comes off very slowly so not sure that is a realistic goal but will see.
Going grocery shopping this afternoon. Highways should be ok as we just had a little skiff of snow yesterday and it is another beautiful sunny day out.0 -
You are so smart to reverse that pre-diabetes before it hits full blown disease and you are stuck with insulin shots and constant monitoring for the rest of your life. Have you made any alterations with regard to things you eat?0

My hike yesterday.4 -
Stunning photo! Thank you for posting and giving us a glimpse of your walk....absolutely beautiful.
As for my diet, I am cutting back on anything sugary...no jam, cookies, cake, etc. Finding there is a lot of added sugar in items so making sure I read labels. Trying to maintain healthy eating with vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. Working very slowly but it is working so that's the main thing. Went from 186 to 179 but when I look at my weight chart that I use on mfp, it took about 3 months to lose 7 pounds. Wish it was faster.2 -
Stunning photo!!! Thanks for sharing.1

Joy, my doc does not want me to
Lose weight quickly. She says a slow measured loss is sustainable and most fast weight loss is back on in a year or two. Sounds like you are doing it correctly.
I will start eliminating sugars. May sound easier than it is.0 -
I also avoid white bread. I make my own bread and use whole wheat flour. Have been adding in a bit of grain cereal (like Sunny Boy) to add some more nutrients to the bread. I have read that diabetics should avoid white bread due to higher sugar content and processed white flour.
Have the slow cooker going with a sirloin tip beef roast. Added some of my herbs (frozen) that I picked from my planter during the summer. Had a rather large planter that I grew rosemary, thyme, marjoram and basil in. Just kept clipping and freezing the leaves. House smells nice and looking forward to supper!0 -
Today’s walk was not as stunning—went through the suburbs to a shopping plaza. At least I did walk. Tried to start winding down on sweets today.
I agree sugar and carbs are the main problems. And they are hard to avoid! Do you use hundred percent whole wheat or a mix with white?1 -
I use all whole wheat flour for my bread. I add a bit of dough enhancer (about 1 tsp) to the mix and it comes out good. Fleishmann's has a dough enhancer that's called bread booster. Started using that a couple of weeks ago and pleased with results. It just adds extra gluten and the dough rises better.
Good you were able to get your walk in.
Just taking care of a bit of laundry today. Going to cool down during the week and we will be in a deep freeze for a few days.1 -
I’m sitting in the doctors office. Waiting for the doctor to take xray of my knee. I’m a walker and have not been able to walk for 5 days. Weight came on during holidays. I was one pound away from my first goal. Yuck!1
-
Good luck with your knee! If I could not walk I would slowly go crazy. It helps my mood.
I’ve never heard of the bread booster. I know there is high gluten flour, but that wouldn’t be the same. I have started using a quicker version of the no-knead recipe. But I haven’t switched to all whole wheat yet.
Only a small walk today. It was extremely windy!1 -
Joy, do you use a bread machine?
I had gestational diabetes with my third child. The diet they gave me had me eat sourdough bread, and only two slices a day. Evidently it has a lower glycemic index and the proteins are already broken down by the culture, so easier to digest. This was 32 years ago, so things have probably changed
since then.
This being said, I do love sourdough products and bought a culture at the health food store. It takes a week ot two to get going, but I am inspired to make bread again. I have a Zojirushi bread machine which makes it very easy.
Pat, I sympathize with the knee. How did the xray turn out? I had total knee replacement on my left knee 18 months ago. Nobody appreciates walking pain free like a person who gets to store crutches and canes in the attic. Hope you get better soon.0 -
Cat, I have the Zojirushi bread machine too and love it. Used to make a very large batch of dough by hand years ago (20 cups of flour) then switched to a bread machine when it was only hubby and myself. I found the bread booster next to the yeast at the grocery store and I had never heard of it before. I think it is mostly gluten and makes the bread rise better. I just use regular flour (not bread machine) and the whole wheat version.
Have never gotten in to the sourdough bread but I know it is recommended for diabetics. Might try out a recipe.
Pat, I hope your knee issue gets resolved. Welcome to our group.0 -
I don’t have a bread machine, but I am not averse to using my KitchenAid instead of hand kneading.i also bought myself a proofing box which I use a lot! I think any bread you can make yourself is better for you due to lack of preservatives.
Hubby had knee replacement and it took a long time for him to recover. Most people seem to do better than he did.
Today I walked and swam. I think my swimming is getting better. Trying to keep up with free weights and swimming to get
stronger arms.0 -
I walked to the yarn shop today and took the long way back home. 2 1/2 miles. Did a good job tracking calories but I am about
to blow it with New Years cake and a glass of champagne. Back on track big time tomorrow. Cold is coming in and rain. I dont mind walking in cold if I bundle up, but I do not walk in rain. I am afraid of falling.
What is a proofing box and do I need one?0 -

My weigh in is my all time high!
Getting serious! Walked my neighborhood this morning with a 20 degree windchill. I wore long underwear and a down coat and got too hot. 😂
An egg and a banana for breakfast. So far so good, but it is only 10:451 -
Cat, good for you getting on track. You are off to a good start with with a chilly walk. I know the feeling of highest weight ever as that was me back in October.
No more movement on the scale yet for me but I am patiently waiting. Did a bit of research about diabetes and Hashimoto's disease (which I have). There is definitely a link so will be talking about this with my doctor. Knew the link between high cholesterol and Hashimoto's but didn't realize sugar levels were also involved. Good to be educated when living with a condition.
Son gave me some organic coffee beans that are from an indigenous community in eastern Canada. Just enjoying a cup this morning and such a nice flavor. I see I can get this coffee on amazon so will be placing an order in a few weeks. Just want to let the postal strike issue settle down.
Happy New Year. May 2025 be a good happy and healthy year!

I had a thyroid storm in 2000. I was given radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid. I had never had trouble staying skinny until this happened. Now I am 35 pounds over me normal lifetime weight. I never wondered about the thyroid connection until I saw your Hashimotos post. Now I wonder. I take 120 units of Armor Thyroid every day. The first six years after the RI were slug years as I tried synthroid, levoxyl, levothyroid, and several other thyroid meds and was so tired I could hardly make myself get off the couch to fix dinner. The Armor Thyroid was a real game changer for me with regard to living normally.1

A proofing box is just a box that you can place dough to rise at a set temperature. Put the dough in and plug the device in and set. The one I have could also be a slow cooker with a dutch oven and a yogurt maker but I haven’t tried it that way. You don’t need it but it’s nice to have.
Losing weight is hard enough without having another disease or condition that makes it even harder! Admiration all around for trying.

Cat, I'm on synthroid and have been for years. I was 25 when first diagnosed. Dosage has changed throughout the years. For me the right dosage keeps the tsh at 2. My cholesterol levels stay within the normal range at that dosage. Have finally convinced my dr of that fact. My last blood work showed tsh at 5.6 and high cholesterol and now high sugar. He increased synthroid so will see when I get tested again in the spring what happens.
Down on the scale by .6 of a pound this morning (178.8). So I guess this old lady with a thyroid issue can lose weight! Going to do my treadmill twice a day now. Not getting carried away though....just 20 minutes in the morning and my usual 30 in the afternoon. Think it is helping along with keeping away from sugar and watching my portion size.
Cold this morning at minus 25 C. Saw a nice group of nine deer walking down the road this morning then they took off across our field. So nice to see wildlife.0 -
Thanks for the info on the proofing bos. Sounds like a good thing to have. I stick a heating pad on low under my doigh, but who knows what temperature it is?
I keep my TSH around 1.0. Otherwise I turn back into a slug. After 25 years, I can tell when I am over or under medicated and ho in for labwork and med adjustments.
I visited my daughter and her sons today, an hour and a half away. She’s a college professor who also Homeschools three highschool boys. They stay so busy, I have to sneak over there on vacation days. I noticed my hips did not hurt when I got out of the car after 90 minutes of sitting. This must be a benefit of walking!0 -
Wow, it is often hard to be comfy after a car ride. I will have to figure out which parts are stiffest next time. Hips or legs.
Only a short walk today—rather windy! Tried going up on the weights today and managed, but need to get better at it.
