For those who are interested, I'm providing a little more about our trip. Feel free to skip this post, if you are not interested, it is definitely not challenge related.
We were extremely fortunate and grateful for 14 days of glorious weather in Seattle and Alaska and no issues with our Air Canada flights. We were one of the last flights to leave Toronto on Aug 15th and everything was running back to normal on our return flight on Aug 28th.
Highlights in Seattle include:
- Beneath the Streets tour —> I had heard that Seattle was built up and that there were tunnels under the city, but I had no idea as to how to why. This was very interesting and well worth the price of admission.
- Chihuly Glass —> Just incredible. In addition to seeing the glass sculptures, there are 7 short videos at the end, which were really the icing on the cake.
- Lunch at Matt's in the Market —> Just excellent
- Dinner at Monsoon —> A fusion restaurant. Food was amazing. Restaurant was a little too loud for me.
- Dinner at Spinasse —> We made this reservation three weeks before leaving and could only get 9PM. We ordered the tasting menu in which they serve you everything on the menu family style. Excellent food. I was so stuffed that I had to stop eating and just had a taste of the last course.
Highlights in Alaska include:
- Ketchican —> Floatplane, followed by short walk to Traders Cove bear viewing blind. We saw so many bears fishing, catching and eating fish. We had a mama and cub very near the platform. Absolutely amazing.
- Juneau —> Our double excursion day! AM canoed across Mendenhall Lake to view the Mendenhall Glacier as close as possible (not as close as I wanted, because we needed to keep a safe distance away). PM whale watching in a small boat with just six passengers.
- Wrangell —> Went on a jet boat to see the Shakes Glacier. Got to touch one of several very large ice bergs from the glacier.
Highlights from the cruise ship:
- We were on Oceania's Riviera. Their trade mark is "finest cuisine at sea". In my opinion, they lived up their reputation. The meals were excellent. My personal favourite was the Sea Bass at Red Ginger.
- Baristas cafe —> I had pre and post exercise coffee and muesli here. In the afternoon, we'd go for a cappuccino or espresso. Definitely a highlight for me. Near the end of the cruise my husband said to me 'we really need to get an espresso machine'.
- The gym facilities were decent. I worked out six times on the ship. It would have been seven or eight, except I managed to catch a bit of a cold. The fitness director/trainer was really helpful and lead several classes.
- Lots of typical cruise activities like trivia and bean bag toss. My SIL & BIL were keen on collected points, so we did more of these than we would have if we had been on our own. My favourite of these activities was an art scavenger hunt. They had 60 little snippets from various pieces of art and other objects on the ship and you had to find them and identify the deck and location. It was a great way to see the ship, meet people and spend a sea day. Best part, when I was done I copied it over to three additional sheets (1 sheet for each of the 4 of us) and we got 20 points per completed sheet. That was 80 points. My husband got a wind breaker jacket at the end of the cruise from the points.
Overall, it was a wonderful time. I know I indulged in more food, wine, spirits and dessert than I normally would, but it was worth it! I also ate plenty of muesli, oatmeal, salad, vegetables, fruit and beans to keep a good balance of wholesome food in my system.
A few pictures
The four of us after the float plane to the bear viewing blind. Left to right BIL, SIL, my husband and me.
One of the many bears we saw at the bear viewing blind. This is a cub. It was with its mama. The two of them hung out about 20 feet from the blind. It was incredible.
Shakes Glacier —> The blue indicates that this is the oldest compressed snow from the glacier.
Approaching the Shakes Glacier —> The water was so smooth, it was reflecting the mountains and the glacier.
One of the ice bergs in the glacial lake broken off from the Shakes Glacier earlier this year. These ice bergs are stationary as they have planted themselves into the lake bottom. They are seven times bigger under the water surface.

Visited our youngest son today, so posting late.
I weighed myself a second time yesterday before dinner and my weight was lower than first thing in the morning. I've updated my spreadsheet to reflect the lower weight. I know it doesn't really matter, but it was a pound lower and gaining 4 pounds while away felt better than gaining 5 pounds while away. It is just mind games I play with myself. My 7 day trend weight is somewhat meaningless until I get to a week post vacation.
Not surprisingly at all, my weight this morning was down even more. I expect this first week will be reductions each day, as I return to my normal routines.
Calories IN yesterday were low and so were calories OUT. Today and tomorrow are going to be similar.

@age_is_just_a_number Thanks so much for sharing the vacation story and pics. It sounds like it was WONDERFUL. You look beautiful in the pics, and so fit! Congratulations on only gaining a few pounds during your journey's. You'll be back to where you were in no time!

Day 01—08/23— 345.6
Day 02—08/24— 346 Worked last night and I know I could have done better on my water intake.
Day 03—08/25—344 I had chiropractic and massage today so I'm feeling pretty good. Tried a new salmon recipe for dinner that was very tasty.
Day 04—08/26—343 Feeling pretty good about this start. I'll be working the next 4 nights so hopefully I can keep the trend going.
Day 05—08/27—341.4 my shift tonight got canceled so I have some unexpected free time. I'm surprised by the steady downward trend in weight but I guess the focus on logging food is paying off.
Day 06—08/28—343.4 Here's the expected uptick due to fluid and TMI but I'm still doing good at weighing in, logging food and sticking to my calorie limits so I'm not stressing
Day 07—08/29— 342.4 Got busy at work and couldn't post yesterday
Week 1 Start Weight: 345.6lbs
Week 1 Goal: 343.6 lbs
Week 1 Actual Weight: 342.4

🎯 Started strong and then just got back into the maintain mode. Not complaining since it is lower than my last 209-211 holding pattern. But really want to strive to feeling more comfortable in a bathing suit before cruising in the South Pacific in Feb/March. Pep Talk Time! 6 months … half a year! Plenty of time to lose 20-30 pounds if I focus on 5 lbs per month … basically a pound a week. Dedicate the next 24 weeks to breaking through those mental barriers and pushing the holding pattern lower and lower. Next month’s goal … <2035 -
@age_is_just_a_number Love your pictures and highlights! We were on the Oceania Riviera too in July with my husband, mom and sister. You are right … the food was very good and the portions were just right! I didn't get to the gym as often as you … only 2-3 times but DH and I played an active game of ping pong more than a dozen times LOL I count chasing the ball and bending over constantly as exercise on top of volleying the ball back and forth. Almost lost the ball out the window when someone opened it behind the couch. The trivia games were fun as was the art scavenger hunt.
Your float plane adventure sounds fantastic. Great pic too.
Next time in Seattle I want to look for the underground tour. Not heard of it so thanks for the tip. Chihuly was on my must do list and I'm so glad that we went in a day early to view the glassworks.
The vacation weight gain will peel off. It seems everytime I get on a plane I retain water so the first weigh in is higher then it drops back to normal. I gained only 1 lb on each of my cruises this year so feeling good about being active on vacation! Love the fresh fruit for breakfast and lots of veggie options and salads during other meals. Sounds like you did a wonderful job on your food and exercise plan while on vacation (inspiring)!
Planning our 36 day cruise in the South Pacific on Oceania Riviera. Got to love retirement … lots of time to explore. I enjoy not being limited to 7 day vacations during school breaks LOL
Picture of the Miso Glazed Seabass with Stir-fried Udon Noodles in Red Ginger onboard Oceania Riviera. All the food was wonderful but this speciality restaurant was the best.

Hi : - )
I am Dawn. I will turn 65 this round. I have changed my eating habits over time. I basically eat half of the amount that I used to, and have limited eating Ribs to once every 3 months instead of once per week.
Week 1 Start Weight: 137.8
Week 1 Goal: 136.8
Week 1 Actual Weight: 140.8 - Exactly a 3 pound gain : - (
Day 08—08/30— 140.2 - I had to "quick add calories" to yesterday's food diary, I added 230. This happens very rarely. After work I had errands to run, and then spent a few hours on yard/garden stuff since I am running short of time before my trip departure. I ate "lunch" at 8pm, so no time or appetite for dinner. I did have a bowl of green beans that I had picked, that was around 10pm. One of these days my bathroom trip will not be an hour after I weigh and I will get a woosh. 2 cups of coffee each morning, no point in weighing after that.
Day 09—08/31— 138.6 - 4 days done of my 13 straight without a day off. Trying to pace myself.

I made a couple of formatting tweaks since I'm seeing some progress. My weight columns should be out of the "red" and into "orange" in a few weeks. It's weird how much these visual goals motivate me, especially with this tortoise-paced rate of progress. I don't think they will get to the green in this round, but, steady as she goes…
I am so grateful that I don't need to make any more visits this weekend. I desperately needed a bit of time at home to get organized.

Good Sunday Afternoon!
@deepwoodslady , I get the "potty resolution"! 😉 And our weather hasn't gotten quite that cool yet. But I am kinda ready for the Fall.
@Jon4189 , you are doing FAB! I didn't know creatine had that effect. Great you found out. And YES....our bodies work differently than we want them to....but eventually we get the result we are looking for. KEEP ON!
@bteri107 , how are you feeling today?
@age_is_just_a_number , that trip sounds amazing! I am SO envious! A trip with memories to last a lifetime!
Day 08—08/30— 163.4 - Had a light day except for spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and a popsicle for dessert. But sure could have been worse.
Day 09—08/31—163 - I see I didn't have to worry about yesterday. Today so far, I've had pasta salad and 2 slices of a BIG beefsteak tomato. Will have Ramen soup for dinner. Watermelon is on the menu. too. Beautiful day out again today....did a couple errands. My bike needs a small repair which I can handle...will do that a bit later.

Challenge Actual Ending Weight: xxxxx
Total Lost/Gained this challenge: xxxxx
🔜🔜🔜🔜🔜Ultimate Goal: 145-155 (I’ll know Exactly when I get there!)
Thoughts at the start of this round:
This round will be challenging as it includes the U.S. holidays of Labor Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving. All are big foodie or party and dessert type holidays in the U.S. There are also multiple birthday celebrations in my family. In addition, there will be a lot of travel which is traditional in the fall for me as I try to avoid as many icy driving trips as possible in the winter months. There will be lots of doctor appointments away from home as well as Christmas and gift-giving shopping in this round. I will have to make sure I stay on top of my plan in every moment I can and to make the necessary corrections every time the scale goes up. Portion control will be key when away from home. I will again aim for a 10 pound loss this round. Thanks for sharing your journey with me and allowing me to share mine. I am grateful for you all.

CURRENT WEEK:
Day 08—08/30—182.2 ✅ (Trend Weight – 184.8) A nice little drop after finally getting some potty resolution. My calories have been a bit low the last couple of days. I need to make sure I get closer to goal today. I had to use the heat in the house the last couple of nights. Days have been low 70’s and nights have been low 40’s with frost warnings last night. Tonight’s temp is expected to be 40 degrees. Yikes, in August? Hello heat bills.
⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️Day 09—08/31—181.8 ✅ (Trend Weight: 184.5) The month of August ends today and looking at my monthly challenges that I am involved in, I have lost a total of 7.0 lbs this month. It’s been a wildly swinging up & down month so I’m pretty proud of where it has landed. Now, to hang on! September will bring on many challenges for me. Labor Day (food holiday), a family birthday bash and at least one day of travel every single week. I do a lot of travel, (mostly medical travel) in the fall to avoid the icy roads in the months following. Those travel days usually take me most of the week to work back down so those are definitely a challenge within a challenge. However, I feel strong moving into September. I like it when I have my head on straight. It’s not always the case.

I think my post-cruise weight has settled in at gained two pounds while on the cruise. I'm pretty happy about that because that is what I had planned for in my projection.
I made a mistake yesterday: —> We had a late lunch and weren't all that hungry for dinner, so we just had wine, cheese and crackers. In case you didn't know, that is NOT a low calorie or healthy meal. Whenever we do that, I always end up consuming far more calories than if I had just had a proper meal.
Pre-cruise weight was 140.5. Goal is to return to pre-cruise weight, then continue to consume 1770 calories per day on average to continue with between .5 to .7 pounds loss per week (of course depending on what my body does).
I definitely picked up a bug on the cruise, which I thought I was over. But today I'm feeling pretty congested. Was planning to exercise this morning, but just do not have the energy…. oh, I just had a thought, maybe it is also related to yesterday's wine & cheese dinner?
Have to run, I'll catch up on other posts later on.

Hi : - )
Day 10—09/01— 137.6 - Super busy day at work yesterday. I took lots of food with me to last 8 hours, but didn't get to eat any of it, not even the cherries. 2 jobs today, tomorrow, and the next, so I am packing food each day because I don't have time to go home in between jobs. I am on day 6 of 13 straight as of this morning. My first day off will be the day that I have to go into the hospital for a medical procedure on my feet. No walking or driving for a couple of days, but I expect that I will be able to at least pack. I booked off an extra day, the day before I leave for holidays, so that I can get everything harvested and/or covered before my trip. Whirlwind, but I have to keep going.

We can’t control the ingredients in restaurant food so portion control will be key when away from home. I will again aim for a 10 pound loss this round. Thanks for sharing your journey with me and allowing me to share mine. I am grateful for you all.

CURRENT WEEK:
Day 08—08/30—182.2 ✅ ( Trend Weight – 184.8)
Day 09—08/31—181.8 ✅ (Trend Weight: 184.5) The month of August ends today and looking at my monthly challenges that I am involved in, I have lost a total of 7.0 lbs this month.
🐝🐝🐝🐝Day 10—09/01—185.0 ❌ (Trend Weight: 184.6) This is what it looks like when I fill with water. I stuck to my meals well yesterday but did have dessert at a friend’s house with DD and DGS. I was unable to take my prescribed water pill the past couple of days. This week will be hit & miss. I’m not even sure if it’s fair to weigh and if the numbers will do more harm mentally than good. Especially when it continues that I can’t take the medication. Tomorrow’s weight would be after the holiday BBQ today away from home. Wednesday I travel several hours each wayfor a medical appointment on my eyes so Thursday will be skewed. Friday is “no weigh day”, especially with school back in session for DGS. So Saturday would be first day that weight has a chance to slightly level though it could still possibly be somewhat elevated if one day of recovery is not enough. I will play it by ear and see how my curiosity gets to me. This much back-to-back-to-back-to-back change is definitely cramping my style and my routine. It feels like such a wasted week and opportunity to see where I’m really at. I’ve no choice but to push through and do What I can, When I can. Right now from this angle it looks like another month of chasing my tail. In August I finally caught it in the very last week, only to start on that low for this month. Ugh!

Happy Labor Day! The unofficial end of summer, although there is plenty of nice weather ahead!
Day 10—09/01— 163.4 - supposed to have Cane's chicken for late lunch/early dinner. Haven't had it in awhile. I will be prepared with insulin. Its my meal for the day. Probably have an apple tonight for a snack.
