Treadmill 25 minutes. Didn’t accomplish much else today as I downloaded a book from the library.
You are all doing so well with your challenges. Nike hope the new device works well for you.

day 28. Walk 45 min.
Another sunny day! I am giving in too much to sweets and must get back on track during the week. Otherwise I am happy with the exercise portion of this month’s challenge.
Good luck ladies with your goals this week!

It is Octoberfest time, and my meal desires have turned to planning a few Germanic dishes. Cabbage, sausage, schnitzels, pretzels, pickles, i even would love a beery ale! Apple strudel or apple cake! I must carefully select which dishes will be made, as if I am to partake of any it will be my own kitchen they emerge from. Todays grocery delivery includes thin sliced chicken breast to make schnitzels and a red cabbage to make it German Style. No spatzels though i love them. Ill have new potato instead.
I am planning a trip to a European grocer soon to search for herring for a dish we could have every Friday when i was growing up. You cannot find the proper fish at the stores here anymore and i miss it a lot. The tinned fishes are not my favorite but will do once in a while.
The ad from Aldie for last week did show schnitzels in the freezer section, and also jars of red cabbage but I prefer the taste and texture of home made. There are so many food preps that I have stopped over the years that i just want to hang on to a few of them even if they have become a rare thing to prepare.
How about you? What childhood or seasonal specialties do you still make?0 -
nsk great planning for your Octoberfest meal. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I am looking forward to several dishes, like cornbread dressing, candied yams, sweet potato pie, all in moderation.
Lazy day, not much done or finished.

day 29. 40 min. Walk
I love Central and Eastern European food. And I love all specialty food stores. My most loved childhood fave is pierogi and I do make it for holidays.
In NJ there used to be real hard rolls in delis and bakeries and nothing these days ever compares to them, not even in NJ. They were not shelf-stable but they did not have to be.
I do love having mastered getting all the Thanksgiving foods ready at the right time.

I had company for dinner tonight. This is only the 2nd time since I moved here in mid-March that I've had the privilege of hosting someone for a meal. The first time, I served spaghetti and meatballs in a homemade pasta sauce. I don't recall what I did for dessert that time. Today I served sausage and onion/peppers on roll sandwich, homemade creamy tomato soup and hot chocolate pudding with whipped cream topping.
Now to get more guests for supper so I can cook a tasty meal and not have to deal with leftovers. Plus, I get to fancy up the dining table and have soft music in the background … and eat at the table instead of off my lap while watching a TV show! It's such a mood lifter! Not eating alone and sharing a meal with other people.
Melody, I grew up on pierogies nd stuffed vegetables, beet and also cabbage soup as regular parts of our menu. Yep, Eastern European food with a big smattering of German dishes as well. Love that stuff all my life.
GR8, Thanksgiving is a lot of tasty food. I don't really have a favorite holiday, but if I had to choose one it would be Easter.

@nsk1951 i would love to know how to make spaetzel. Big spender that I am, I blew a dollar on a press at a neighbor’s yard sale a few weeks ago, but I have no idea what to do with it. I just have this addiction to cooking gadgets.
I grew up on a farm in WV in the fifties and sixties. We had good old country cookin’, but our idea of international cuisine was spaghetti with meat sauce or pizza out of a box mix😂.

nsk I guess all of the holidays are my favorite. I enjoy good food anytime. 😁

nsk Good challenges!
Dr's appt today. He said I looked really good. I hadn't seen him since last Oct when I was diagnosed with pre diabetes. Was happy to hear that my last A1C was 5.8 taking me out of pre diabetic range. Got a request for blood work from him and will be taking it to our local hospital during the week to complete along with an electrocardiogram. He said the biggest factor to lower my A1C level was stopping the sugar intake which also resulted in weight loss. I asked him what my A1C should be at my age (75) and he said anything below 5.9 is good.

I’m going to keep with my treadmill walking as my challenge. Exercise is my area of weakness. I know I need to move more and setting a 25 minute per day challenge on my treadmill will help.

October
Day 1. Walking 115 min. Lovely walk in the park, beautiful cooler weather.
Welcome to Carol and welcome back to NettNett. I am 72 and live in the Finger Lakes region.
Put a new battery in the scale and it hated me. Trying to eat less and see what happens in the coming days.

I’m a night iwl tonight. It scenes I missed my sleep window.
Day one of October: I did good on my calories, not good on walking. Today I had (still have) very sore legs from the knees down to the toes and stepping on my feet was excruciating so I have hobbled all around the house as little as possible and sat a lot.
My son brought over the new upright Rollator he ordered last week and put it together. I’m afraid we might have to send it back because the hand grips are raised up from the fore arm support so I have to twist my hands up at the wrists to hold the grips;&# and that won’t do. We are going to make a decision soon how to proceed I looked online for other brands and did find a couple that seem to have a better gripping system, but there are other things with those machines that made them questionable I wish that they had them in locall stores, but they don’t. We will figure itOnward and forward with hopes and faith.
Welcome to Carol and Netti. Titus , ii will look up my simple recipe for spatzels and post it later. I don’t have a dedicated instrument for it and simply run the batter through the holes of my stainless steel calendar set over a pot of boiling broth or water. The batter is loose enough that it flows through as I stir it around with a spoon. Sometimes I make the batter thicker and use it for dumplings in my chicken and dumpling soup.0 -
NSK’s Spatzels
the original recipe served 8 but I cut It down to make 2
ingredients are 2 cups all purpose flour; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 2 eggs; about 3 tablespoons milk Mix all together by hand or mixer until very smooth and bubbles form, about 10 minutes with a mixer. Bring a large wide pot of water to boil, salt it and put it to a simmer. Using a spatzel maker or a calendar with large holes, rub some batter through the holes into the simmering water. Do small batches of batter to the pot, don’t crowd it or they will stick together. The spatzel will drop to the bottom of the pot, so give it a light and gentle stir and let them simmer a couple of minutes. They will rise to the top of the water as they cook. Lift them out gently and put them in a bowl, put some butter on them. Repeat with more batter until you’ve used it all up.
just so you know, if you Google it you will find many recipes that will give you far more detail and instructions than what I have done above. Good luck.0 -
Ocean Melody ~ What a beautiful photo of the place you walk!
NSK’s Spatzels ~ I have never had spatzels and must admit I am not much of a baker. Grew up with old fashion Southern fruit cake.
Ladies ~ My husband has been in the hospital for the last 10 days with complications from heart failure that led to blood clots in his leg and lung. Prayers appreciated.

Hi all - my name is Margaret, I’ll be 72 in December, am pre diabetic and overweight. I have been on MyFitnessPal for years as my weight has fluctuated. My doctor tells me I need to lose 20 pounds at a minimum. I exercise six a week, drink lots of water, always eat a healthy breakfast and lunch, but boy! does my eating take a nosedive later in the afternoon and evening. I also enjoy alcohol, which makes all of this more difficult. Anyway, I hope I can become a part of this group and follow all of your ups and downs so I won’t feel so alone. Thanks. (I love to take pictures of the sky, and to see all the different colors of nature.)

Treadmill 25 minutes.
Read an article that 2/3 of Canadians between 18 and 79 are considered overweight or obese. Was surprised at that.
Will probably go on Monday to get my bloodwork done. Lab techs in Alberta are threatening strike action. Not sure what is going on here but Canada Post is out on strike, teachers are going out on October 6th and now the lab techs.

day 3. Walk around the neighborhood 60 min.
Scale is slightly better.
Sorry about all the labor actions in Canada! Here with this stupid shutdown one of my blind friends who works for the govt may lose her health care, and she is young with multiple other health issues. Some days it all seems hopeless.Trying to get ready for a brief fall car trip and there is so much still to do.
You all are doing well with exercise!
