I don't let people know the real me because then they don't have the ability to hurt the real me...I have built up a big enough wall around my heart and soul that no one is getting in2

My brain is reeling at the moment. DH retired around the first of the year. He was close to many former co-workers. One of them committed suicide about a week ago; they had the memorial this afternoon. He's home an hour from that and gets a call from another former peer from work and a good buddy of his, their daughter was killed last night in a hit and run. I had her and her brother in my daycare when she was about 5. I'm stunned. Just stunned and shaken. She was 20. DH retired around the first of the year. He was close to many former co-workers. Yep, long forgotten thread. But I think it fits. We went to an outdoor show last week, and things got serious pretty quick. It was a hardcore/punk/post punk type headliner (Turnstile) so naturally there were pits, some serious crowd surfing and moshing, plenty of two stepping, and a fairly intense crowd. I was with my daughter, and she had wanted to stay in the more civil boundaries of the area. We were on and edge near the start of the trees, on the border of the flat open areas. We saw quite a few people come and go into the rowdier areas, usually ducking out to take a break and cool of on the hill near us. I was approached by a guy asking if I had any water in a rather timid way. I held up my bottle and showed him it was empty, but mentioned that the closest vender wasn't far away. Then he mentioned that it wasn't for him and pointed towards a woman sitting and leaning over the base of a tree. So I said something to the effect of "oh looking out for your friend". He then clarified that he didn't know her but they had come out of the pit area kind of together and that he thought she really needed some water. I looked back towards her and she was now puking hard, kind of sliding down the tree. Me and another woman that was near me and could hear the conversation started flagging down the closest security people and got some water on the way. When I got to her, this woman could not sit up straight, and was barely holding herself from falling forward on her face. A security guy gave me a partial water and I let him know that we needed more with some urgency. I had to help sit her up, as well as help hold the water as she was struggling to do either. She was quickly moving towards heat stroke and had very little life in her eyes…. she was in real trouble. Several security guys showed up, along with a couple cops. One security guy in particular was real helpful in helping get some fluids in her and taking a real concern. The guy that had brought her condition to our attention had disappeared at some point while we helped her out. I'm not sure why but suspect maybe his condition wasn't much better than hers, and he needed to recover himself. But in either case, without that guy, who was a stranger, that young woman could have easily ended up in much worse medical condition. Whoever he was, he did the right thing looking out for someone. For me, it got heavy over the next couple of days thinking about how I altered my response to the situation due to my perception of how society seems to be thinking and acting these days. Though things worked out fine and she left on her own feet, I'm still beating myself up over it a little bit. And I have full intentions of contacting the Sheriff's department as well…. several showed up but the only people that assisted and interacted with this women were me and the one security guard. Not one of them assessed her condition, no medial personnel were called on the radios…. nothing. And at a minimum she probably should have had a medical professional check her out and take vitals, and more than likely she could have used an IV and/or some assistance and someone to keep an eye on her for a while. I'm beyond angry that strangers did more for this woman than the paid professionals did. 2

It is disturbing to see bystanders taking a video instead of helping, stepping over or around instead of lending a hand, not stepping in when help is needed... Feels like the world shifted… 4

Social media clout certainly drives people to do outlandish and thoughtless things; gotta get those likes right? And some people do seem to have an instinct to pull out their phones and start filming when anything out of the ordinary starts happening.
It's depressing but I try not to let myself believe that all of today's youngsters are like that.0

@jmaak1 I'm going to take a bit of time and make sure the right people know about the actions of the professionals involved. It probably won't make me any less angry but if the right people don't know they can't fix it. @yakkystuff It does seem the world has shifted over time. In this case I saw none of that, but it was on my mind. And @Redux6 I tend to think that those clicks and likes people seek cloud judgement of many. In this case, the guy that approached me was younger. It's not all of them, and I'm glad for that. And some of these things were the reason I beat myself up a bit over my response. Knowing that anything might be recorded, placed online for easy clicks, etc kept me alert to that fact. I didn't want to attract too much attention in fear that such people would start recording and/or be in the way due to it. And I didn't want to chance that the young woman might end up on YouTube or such having a really bad day in her diminished state. I'm still a bit upset with myself over it. In this case it didn't matter, but had her condition been worse it might have. And I accept that society will change, but in this case I allowed it to change me. I should have taken the approach of not giving one F what the do nothings in society might think. Especially since I learned long ago that you can do the right thing, for the right reason, and still have negative consequences. 0

This rang a bell with me because... one day, I was driving through a curve, entering a tunnel and noticed a woman trying to hold onto a fence as she slid to the ground. Took me a few minutes to get turned and drive back. She had collapsed and was laying there. No one appeared to have stopped - so I pulled off after the tunnel and called 911 for an ambulance. We live in an area with tens of thousands of homeless… I had trouble getting the 911 person to send help - said I watched her collapse and did not know if the woman had a medical event or if she was inebriated… After the call, i went back to check on her. Took over 40 mins for responders to arrive. No one else stopped. I was mortified. 1
