The girls who dress like that WANT to be looked at. which is why I don't wear anything like that
Ditto!0 -
way back in the 70s i joined one of the most popular gyms in the US. the clientele were the most buffest men and buff venus type women. on my first day, i wore a one piece leotard (i think thats what they call it) and i covered up with a pair of gym shorts cause my cheeks were out. they told me i had to remove the shorts, it was against dress code. told them my *kitten* cheeks were out, but i had to remove the shorts or leave. went to the registration desk, and it took boo-coo argument time to get my contract annulled because i was not told i had to wear butt flaps.0

Most of us do like to be looked at till it gets to be uncomfortable. When the person is just staring us down with his tongue hanging out (dramatization) but you get the pic.0

Ok so hears the deal. I was wanting you girls opinion on something I've wondered for a long time. Most women don't wanna be gawked at in the gym or they act as if they dont. BUT WHY do you wear such revealing clothes. By all means I'm a fan, but when the girl shows up with her shorts rolled up and a sports bra on, you can't help but look!!!! Its like if you got it flaunt it (which at my gym they do) so don't act all shocked if every guy in the gym is checking you out when your doing your leg kicks/yoga stretches in the ab room!
HUH? Yeah, no. I wear baggy everything. I'm there to work out. Although I have seen some chicks that look like they belong on a street corner rather than the gym...
COD>>>> Battlefield tho
Heathen! Blasphemy!0 -
Gyms are social, most people want to be looked at. I have a home gym and bought everything I need for the price most gyms charge for memberships so I don't know why there would ever be a need to set foot in a gym unless you want to be social, period.0

Perhaps the OP is just suggesting ... look hot, dress hot, then be comfortable with me staring at your fun parts.
I would never talk to you, but can't I appreicate a painting I like?
If I don't say anything, but stare at your chesticles bouncing a bit while you are on the treadmill, am I bad person?!?
I mean there isn't that much in the gym to hold my attention as ESPN is running the same god damn 10 Clips over and OVER AND OVER! I will just focus on you bumpy rumpy while I try to keep pace. I'm not drooling just staring! is vision soooo terrible!?
hahahaha...."chesticles bouncing". Hey, he's honest girls, and this is just the way 99.9% of men are built. You wear it, you should expect to be oogled (and, I'd bet most of you enjoy the oogling.....nuthin' wrong with that either). I wear tight fitting yoga pants and tank so it doesn't get hung up on the equipment, but I wouldn't consider it sexy wear. No belly or booty showing. If you got it and wanna flaunt it, all power to you. But, don't pick on the guys because they are pointing out that it IS provocative and distracting in a sense.
distracting? not sure... Encouraging? HELL YEAH.0 -
Tonight I went to the gym in the most hideous (spelling?) outfit ever. I was embarassed to walk inside. Nothing matched, had on a huge baggy shirt......if any of my cuter workout clothes had been clean I would have sported them instead. I seriously debated not going to the gym. I care what I look like but am far from vain.0

Is this thread for real? Are we really body shaming on a fitness site? Women are allowed to wear whatever they please without anyone else in mind. If a woman wants to wear shorts and a sports bra to work out in she's not "asking for attention", that's like the same stupid train of thought that says that some women are "asking" to be raped.
This thread is awful.
This is right up there with the "men only like women with curves" threads meant to shame all the thin muscular women.0 -
I set foot in a gym for the first time in well over a year this past week (I normally work out at home but I'm finding I need a better range of equipment). I wore cropped sweats and a sports bra w/ a tank over it. "Work out" clothes section things. I don't like my clothes to move around much when I exercise and I need things that wick away moisture because I sweat A LOT. Baggy t's just don't cut it. I don't see the issue with women wearing what they're comfy in. I personally like tighter fitting clothes because they're more comfy to me and I don't have ot keep adjusting them. Props to women who have the confidence to wear what they want! No one should be gawked at because of their clothing. Hell most of the men in the gym I went to had nothing but a pari of shorts on, no shirts for f's sake. I know how to control my urge to gawk and not look like a horney teenager!0
-
Honestly, if you wear just a sports bra, you're asking for attention. And I'm a girl saying this. It might not be a conscious effort, but definitely one of "look at me."0
-
There is a young woman that works as a life guard at my gym. There is no doubt she wants all the attention she can get. Constantly looking to see if anyone is checking her out. Her required attire includes a typical lifeguard t-shirt, and it is pretty obvious she would prefer to wear much less. She constantly lifts up the front to show off her mid section as if she is overheated and needs to cool off. She also lifts up the back of the shirt so her tiny shorts are showing every time she gets up to check on the pool temperatures. Her little shows help pass the time on the elliptical machine, which is a window away from the pool area.0

I happen to agree, even though I do like SOME attention and like to feel that I look good; it's why I'm working out. But I don't like people looking at me WHILE I'm working out, because I'm sweaty, my hair's a mess and ... I'm not sexy. I wear shorts and a tank, usually, with a sports bra underneath. I don't feel it's wrong to wear just a sports bra if it doesn't look like a regular bra (most of them really look more like crop tops). I have once or twice taken my shirt off and just had the sports bra on, but only because I was really hot, and I felt pretty self-conscious doing it. Not wrong, just self-conscious.
I have never seen anyone wearing shorts so skimpy that her *kitten* cheeks were hanging out. It might have happened somewhere, but I've never seen it at my gym. It sounds like a very uncomfortable outfit to work out in. I think I'd be tugging those things out of my butt crack every other minute. As far as some men claiming that the women were flaunting their butts right in front of them, you often have no choice. The treadmills can be very close together in rows. If I get stuck on one where there's a guy working out behind me, I feel really uncomfortable. i don't want to be bouncing around right in front of someone. I try to put that out of my head and focus on my workout. I'm only there to work out, and I have limited time so I rarely socialize. If I do it's usually another woman I'm talking to.
Believe it or not I actually feel I get LESS ogled at the gym than on the street, because most of the guys there seem so narcissistic they are mainly watching themselves work out in the mirror.
I, too, really hate being told women are wearing stuff because they want attention. Especially because if you wear baggy, loose clothes you get negative attention and criticism, too. So -- you're either labeled slutty tease or ugly dog -- first one is wrong because most guys can't get their hands on what you're "obviously" advertising (don't you dare wear that around me if you don't want me to have some of "that"!), the second one is wrong because guys don't want to look at ugmos. Ugmos should stay home. Don't come to the gym if you're too fat. ... Really, you can't win.0 -

Is that Fred Durst as your avatar? Do you really want my opinion?0 -
I'm surprised at all the agreement this got from women.
The original post absolutely rubbed me the wrong way and, to me, is remniscent of slutshaming and victimblaming in our rape culture. The one that tries to justify harrassing women on the street (or raping them) by telling us "she was asking for it" by dressing a certain way. Clearly, I am by no means saying that the OP is a rape apologist, it's just the whole idea of saying that the way a woman chooses to dress says anything about who she is, what she wants, or who she wants it from is troubling to me.
A lot of people don't want to admit that the issue is themselves not the other people that look better, or are smarter, or have more money then them. We pick others apart so we don't have to acknowledge our own flaws. Human, mostly female, nature.
This is also why girls hate each other.
I get what you're saying. I don't believe that women are naturally and intrinsically programmed to hate other women. I think a large part of it is that our society teaches us that a) a woman's value is largely based in the way she looks and b) the myth of male weakness that implies that men are so weak-minded, primitive and biologically driven that if a woman walks by in a short skirt they can't help but oogle, if she comes onto him when she's drunk he can't help but take advantage of her etc. This myth is a large part of why women "hate each other" and slutshame eachother. How many times have you seen a man cheat on a woman, and then the girlfriend HATES the other woman and blames her entirely(he couldn't help it, boys will be boys, etc) while forgiving her boyfriend? In my opinion, once society learns that everyone (male or female) is fully responsible for her or her own actions (sexual or otherwise), and that other people's sexual/clothing/life choices are none of our damn business, women will be on their way to ending the unnecessary and instant competition/criticism with other women.
I disagree, anthroplogically speaking women are "programmed" to resent each other because they're nesters, and anything that disrupts the nest is a threat (other women). It has nothing to do with society, but survival of the fittest. Women want to exploit the goods that men can deliver such as their seed and security, this is decreased when he has to look after other women, therefore women don't like each other.0 -

This is true. My husband often says that women are more vicious to eachother than men every could or would be to other men or women. Mind you I have close friendships with a select group of women but generally I do not like women at all. However if someone's tearing down someone for no reason (like in this thread) I tend to stick up for the underdog.
Seriously, and I really do mean this, we are all adults, it's not THAT hard not to look if something offends you. Think with the head on your shoulders not in your pants.0 -
Because they want the attention and then act like they don't want the attention because they don't want to come off as attention *kitten*.0

You know I run outside, I run in tight clothes. I don't do it so people can look at me. I do it some I'm not pulling up my pants/ pulling down my shirt, worrying about the sweat accumulating, etc. Baggy sweat tshirts suck, they're super annoying! When some guy honks/ cat calls I really do feel like "ew, what a perv". I'm not running so people can oggle me, I run for my fitness. I wear tight clothes because that works for me. I can completely see the advantage of a sports bra and shorts. Less to be fussing with while you're trying to work.0 -
well I have read this post and have to admit not been to a gym yet because I am ashamed and embarrased to go because of my weight and how fat I am. I have a long way to go and I have health issues and RA and this makes it hard to exercise. I take coumadon for atrial flutter and take meds for it so it would be scarey to do cardio because I have to keep my heart rate low so I do not have a stroke or get a blood clot ..As far as gym attire I would have to wear a burka until I was skinnier. But Katie bar the door when I reach goal because this old gal is going to show some skin which I have never been able to do having been overweight all my life since starting thru puberty at 10 them Bam thar she blows..Gained 60 pounds when pregnant with daughter and never lost it. Good luck to all doing the gym. I will get there one day just need a gym buddy since I have no one to help me out : (0

do you mean the girls who prance around the gym and not do anything? lol
haha ^^this^^
Theres a few of them at my gym, a tonne of make up on and they wouldn't dare sweat in case it messes up their hair! They want to be looked at, then moan when they get attention.......I don't get it lol :ohwell:0 -
Gotta say I do disagree with this one....
I go to the gym because I can't afford all the equipment and if I could, I have nowhere to store it. I go to the gym for me, nobody else. While I'm there, I stick my earphones in and get on with it. I talk to no one while I'm working out. Occasionally a trainer will walk past and ask how I'm doing and thats the only socialising I do while there. Most others are the same. I totally disagree that people go to a gym just to be sociable, thats totally not true0 -

Sorry for posting this twice, for some reason it didn't work properly the first time lol0 -
While I agree to some points, and there are definitely girls out there that do it for the attention...just like the guys in wife beaters that don't cover up much of anything are asking for attention. With that being said there are certain activities that require different types of workout clothes. Like when I go to yoga class I don't wear baggy shirts b/c they'll fall up when I'm in some of those poses, so yeah, I tend to wear tighter clothes. At the same time, if you're at the gym for a really long run, I'm sure it must be much nicer to do it without a shirt sticking to your skin.
I don't think anyone can judge them by their workout clothes...just like I wouldn't want anyone to judge me...and I'm sure none of you would want anyone to judge you during your gym time.
Lets go to the gym to work out...not criticize0 -
I can't wait to wear nothin' but a sports bra and yoga pants...because then I've achieved my "DAMN YOU'RE HOT" g:drinker: oal...I don't mind if you stare, but I'll going to look right back like "yeah you want this, but I can kick your *kitten*" glare lol I can't help it, i stare at women that dress like that, I wouldn't mind the looks of appreciation...just don't get creepy!
Me too! :drinker: I work pretty hard when I go to the gym and I wear a sports vest top and capri running trousers and I'm boiling when I finish my workout. I'm normally perspiring more than most of the other women there - I find I'm even hotter if I wear a non-wicking T-shirt or anything with sleeves!
I'm looking forward to the day I've lost enough weight to look good in a crop top & mid-thigh length running shorts and go for a good run like a 10k on the treadmill!
PS: I won't mind if guys check me out if I ever get to this level of fitness!0 -
I think this is an extremely interesting post, with many women having contrasting views on what is the acceptable thing to wear.
I agree that you should wear whatever you want to wear and that should not determine what 'type' of person you are or whether you like attention bla bla bla. HOWEVER, I find it very difficult to believe that any woman does not like attention, we all love it!!! (I suspect men do as well!).
i also agree that those women who rock up to the gym with a full face of make up on and simply sit, stretch, do yoga and have a chat are extremely annoying, but if they want to waste their membership they can!!
I personally would never arrive at the gym with just a sportsbra and booty shorts on for the simple fact, I work hard and I wouldn't want anything 'falling out', and it can also be uncomfortable for other people in the gym watching you butt cheeks bounce up and down 1 metre in front of their face.
So instead I wear tight fitting, stretchy sports leggings, sportsbra and a tight vest top over the top, I get to show off my body without risk of my bum eating my shorts and making everyone else feel uncomfortable, and I always wear black: slimming and hides the sweat WIN WIN??0 -
Gyms are social, most people want to be looked at. I have a home gym and bought everything I need for the price most gyms charge for memberships so I don't know why there would ever be a need to set foot in a gym unless you want to be social, period.
I have a commercial treadmill at home and other exercise equipment, however, I am fully aware that not everyone can do that.
Most people do not want to be looked at and many people actually do go to the gym to work out, not for social interaction. My husband belongs to a gym. The company has a string of gyms across the UK, his membership entitles him to go to any of those gyms, at any time, which is handy because sometimes he will go to one of the gyms that is around the corner from where he works at lunchtime. He would not be able to do any of that if he only had access to the equipment at home.0 -
i kinda think i should be allowed to push the girls in coochie cutter shorts off of the treadmill. or at least go up to it and put it on, oh i don't know 9mph and watch them fly off of it  luckily i haven't encountered too many girls at my gym that wear pj's to work out in. you wanna wear tight yoga pants and a sports bra i'm fine with that but when i feel uncomfortable at the treadmill behind you because you have *kitten* cheek hanging out then there is a problem. just saying....
i agree. however, i like 2 think i work hard at the gym, including building up a good sweat, and if i achieve my dream body, i wud prob wear shorts, but theres always a line meaning normal shorts - and hot pants!!0 -
sorry meant to put normal size gym shorts and NOT hot pants!! lol0

Really? The ONLY reason to go to the gym is to be social????
I go to the gym to use the weight lifting equipment. Period.0 -
at any gym out in public i'd maybe wear a vest top with joggin bottoms... at home its very different though... i usually wear less and have window open to keep me cool as i find i can workout longer... could never do it in public though :blushing:0

We all notice, and just in cased a suitable mate is there, the ladies want to look their best - even at the gym.
BUT!!!!!!
They don't want to have to deal with all the ugly guys, so there's the disconnect.
These ladies would never admit this truth, and the rejected guys would never admit that they fall into the category of the the rejected ugly, but this is the mating game folks!
Deal with it.0
