A good pair of running shoes is worth every penny (if you're into running)
A YMCA membership is available in your area, more bang for the buck than a private gym (in my opinion)

3. Polar hrm -I am thyrotoxic so have to monitor my HR -It still gets up to 150-170 but a year ago I could not exercise for 5 mins before it was at 186! - I am 53 it should be less than 150 when I exercise.0 -
For me:
Shoes. Everything starts with great shoes that support your foot and don't cause pain in your joints.
Gym membership. I won't run outside. I won't use the treadmill. I will go to the gym every day, because they have a ton of great equipment, friendly people, and if I pay for something, I will use it.
My ipod. I listen to tunes when doing weights, etc. and I d/l TV shows and play them on the TV screens on my treadmill when doing cardio. Could not get through a workout without it. Need the distraction, or it just doesn't happen.0 -
