Breakfast - a waste of calories?

This:I always used to skip breakfast - just didn't care for eating in the morning. I have to say though, since I started logging and forcing myself to eat in the mornings, breakfast has turned in my favorite meal of the day. For whatever reason, I really look forward to my oatmeal, boiled eggs, crackers, and a few minutes of SportsCenter each morning. :-)
Is because this DOES carry over:Your metabolism doesn't stop. It may slow down, but not to the point where you won't lose weight. What eating does do is set off hormonal responses that make you feel hungry. People who don't eat breakfast are merely delaying that response.
If I eat breakfast, I'm ravenous all day. If I don't eat breakfast...I can easily go clear to the next dinner without eating. This is after a 2000-3000cal series of 'evening meals' the night before...usually over a 4-5hr window.
It is amazing to me how prevalent the antiquated belief that food in the morning is what causes your metabolism to activate...even though it's been PROVEN that it doesn't stop, and barely (if at all) even slows down when sleeping. Just GETTING UP in the morning, increases your metabolism the tiny amount that it will be increased from your sleeping metabolic rate.
Eating breakfast is a preferance, not a necessity.
not trying to dig at you or come across aggressive BUT, noone said that the metabolism stops, merely that is slows right down. The 'kick-start' is getting nutrition in early to help the metabolism fire up so its burns at a higher rate throughout the WHOLE day not just the few hours after and like soaps said its great to have something to look forward to after a workout.
Personally i prefer to eat as soon as i get up but on the occasion i eat after.
and crisanderson, i will happily accept 100% what you are saying (heres that word again) IF you can show your certificate to be a fully qualified nutritionist. I cant say that i am BUT 99% of PT will tell you that breakfast IS the most important meal of the day
Like i said im not trying to bust your balls or anything.
And if you can show me articles by medical professionals that disproves me i will happily read them to see how you are thinking.
I have been on both sides of this. I NEVER used to eat breakfast and im on my feet all day and worked out 2-3 times a week but still could not get rid of the band of fat over my abs.
Now i eat it everyday workout 3-4 times a week and have almost got rid of that unwanted fat and am down to around 11% body fat, previously 16%.
So the extra 300 or so calories a day and only 1 extra workout surely would make me gain right?0 -
I'm not a huge breakfast eater either. So I usually just have a protien shake and go about my business.0

Can you substantiate that you will burn more cals throughout the days just by eating breakfast, holding calories and protein constant? Something more than anecdotal evidence or using an appeal to authority saying 99% of PT's say it's important?0 -

you may be mis interpreting what im saying, with the PT thing, yes is an outlandish statement but 99%of the PTs ive spoken to DO recommend it.
And with the fat burning i didnt attribute this 100% to breakfast, its just, as you say, an anecdote to part of my story of my fitness. So i am putting breakfast as a key part of it.

Before starting this whole journey, I was never a breakfast person. I wasn't hungry in the morning and I'm not a fan of "breakfast foods" in genearl. So, I figured, why not just eat more of what I want later in the day?
Now, though, I do eat breakfast every day, and I've learned to love it. It makes me feel much better throughout the day, and I don't find myself eating nearly as much (or wanting to) crap later on for lunch, snacks, dinner, midnight snacks, etc.0 -

You're not very good at this, you made the claim that eating breakfast "kick starts" your metabolism and has it burning at a higher rate all day. The burden of proof is on you to substantiate such an outlandish claim.0 -
i think in this case, not eating breakfast, your body is attempting to go into survival mode, so storing the fat because it is not sure when it will get any food/nutrients agin so stores the fat for energy
when you snack eat an apple or peanut butter on oatcakes or almonds, they really fill me up and stop that craving!
Oh come on!! No one's body is "attempting to go into survival mode" and storing fat because they eat a few hours later in the day. Don't be ridiculous.0 -

I quit reading the first one at the mention of BMI. Sorry. Oh wait...that's not true, it was the second paragraph where it went into all the bunk about eating frequency and thermogenisis. Also, it was published 3yrs ago.
The second, is a site designed to sway you to their thinking, so you'll buy their products.
The third, is a random website regurgitating all the crap the other two espouse. Which is again based on antiquated information gained via poorly effected studies.
Directly from the fourth:3. Eat Breakfast
If you want to kick-start that metabolism, you need to kick-start your day by eating a healthy breakfast. There are numerous benefits to eating breakfast every morning, one of which includes a boost in metabolism. Upon waking, most people have gone about 10 to 12 hours without any food. To skip breakfast means you would be starving yourself for a longer period of time, causing your body to go into "survival mode," storing fat in the process. This will slow down your metabolism.
Well, that sites bunk...because it's been proven it takes over 72hrs of low or no calories for your body to even consider survival mode.

I'm a breakfast eater and my husband isn't. We're both doing MFP and both have seen success. I know there is some truth to jump-starting your metabolism with breakfast, but I think it is important to stick with what works for your individual needs and preferences. If what you're doing is working -- keep at because you must be doing something right!0

I ALWAYS eat breakfast! Mostly just a sandwich and a morning drink, which means my breakfast is around 180 calories. I DO notice that when I eat more, my hunger stays away more. The entire day!0

I know there is some truth to jump-starting your metabolism with breakfast
But this is the point M'am...how do you know this?0 -
For me, eating breakfast is NOT a preference, it IS a necessity. I will get a migraine if I do not eat. And I have noticed that since I'm watching my cals and working out I am now hungrier in the mornings than I used to be. I cannot skip meals, period.
To each their own.0 -

From your own "source"Metabolism Boosting Tip #1 -- Eat breakfast. Breakfast gets your metabolism out of its resting state and back into burning mode. Skipping breakfast and other meals may prompt your body to store calories as fat rather than to burn them, in case your body won’t be getting more food any time soon. Infrequent eating may also prompt you to overeat later as a result of excessive hunger.
First you notice it doesn't substantiate any of what it said, then says it may prompt you to do certain things, but not actually cause it.
I'm not sure what you don't understand, please cite peer reviewed studies that show an increase in metabolism from eating breakfast and holds calories and protein constant, you've yet to post a single study.0 -
I think its probably best to stop this debate here, as we can all see that EVERYONE has their own opinion on this.
I have given my views and the 2 guys have come up with 1 view against what im saying but hey, we are all different and its our own preference.
I still strongly believe that breakfast should be eaten to wake you up. like i said i used to skip breakfast all the time and go work in a busy hotel and not eat until dinner (basically IF) and i felt terrible was hard to drag myself out of bed in the mornings and find the energy to work. although i only did this once ore twice a week the lack of food really hit me!
Thanks for helping me kill some time tonight and good luck with all your future progress0 -

You clearly don't know much about IF, whether you've heard of it or no. NO one skips breakfast, not you, not me...no one that puts food in their mouths. Breaking your fast (i.e. 'breakfast'), happens when you haven't eaten for a long enough period to put you into a 'fasted' state. That doesn't happen over a few hours of sleep. So technically, I guess I probably have breakfast quite a bit more often than you do lol. It just doesn't occur right after I've slept. Additionally, as a semi side note...quite a few intermittent (stupid phone) fasters DO eat right after they wake up...and skip dinner entirely instead. You choose your OWN windows of when you want to eat...because, simply...it doesn't freaking matter.
IT'S A MATTER OF PREFERANCE!!
Now, as I mentioned, I can't play google fu with you as I'm on my cell, as well as riding my motorcycle (it's annoying to have to stop to make a point...it's freaking HOT here!)
~Edit - Also, the leangains site specifically links quite a few peer reviewed studies (current ones btw), along with pointing out the fallacies in the older studies. If you send me your email, I'll send you an interesting read you can take a look at (it's saved on my phone), that also sites multiple studies as verification.0 -
Eating breakfast get's your metabolizm (sp) going. I eat 5-6 small meals a day.0

read my next post. im calling it a day as i have posted numerous links and between the 2 of you i have only received 1 piece of "evidence" so if you are really trying to prove me wrong big shot nows the chance to step up to the plate and get that game winning ball0

Agree 100%!!!! I enjoy breakfast foods but eating in the morning just makes leaves me hungrier so I just skip it I still have some milk or a bit of protein shake in my coffee.0

Up since 7 am and usually eat around 2 pm. My poor broken metabolism ;D0

I get up every morning at 4:00 to work out but everytime i eat breakfast at 6:30 I am starving all day , if i dont eat breakfast then i literally can go till dinner before eating. Why is this. I thought breakfast was supposed to keep you from eating all day. I still make myself eat some oatmeal or fruit.0

Breaking your fast (i.e. 'breakfast'), happens when you haven't eaten for a long enough period to put you into a 'fasted' state. That doesn't happen over a few hours of sleep. So technically, I guess I probably have breakfast quite a bit more often than you do lol.
well thats just semantics! haha
I know =D.Up since 7 am and usually eat around 2 pm. My poor broken metabolism ;D
LOL!! Don't even get me started on you =p.0 -
read my next post. im calling it a day as i have posted numerous links and between the 2 of you i have only received 1 piece of "evidence" so if you are really trying to prove me wrong big shot nows the chance to step up to the plate and get that game winning ball
The burden of proof is on the claim maker, you've posted links but no actual evidence supporting your claim. I suggest you learn how to do some research.0
