80/10/10--I'm doing it!

Hi, everyone
New to the board here. I decided that, for the New Year, I would do 30 days of 80/10/10. I've been mostly raw for about a year and a half now, but I've lost my passion for it, so I'm hoping this will help. So far, I'm doing okay. I'm definitely not hungry. If anything, I find it nearly impossible to eat enough food to hit my targets! I've been coming in at closer to 15% fat most days, though, so I need to get that under control. I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried this approach or is currently living it. I'm especially interested in hearing how you structured your food intake and which foods gave you the most bang for your buck.
Thanks!
Ameyls

Hi Ameyls,
I am going to try the 80 10 10 starting today, basically. Did you do it for 30 days? How did it go?0 -
Sorry to sound ignorant but whats 80 10 100

I was just about to ask as well!0 -

It's a diet that follows the idea of the ratio of nutrients to support health is 80% carbohydrates, 10% protein and 10% fat.0
-
80 carbs, 10 protein, 10 fat. Not what I'd call very balanced. I wouldn't get very far consuming 25 to 30 g's of protein a day.0
-
Wow, no way, I think I'd drop. I go with 30-35% carb, 40-45% fat, and 25% protein and do great.
Why is the 80 10 10 recommended? I'd like to hear the reasoning behind it.0 -

Certainly couldn't build or maintain any muscle. And what about the insulin response to so much carb? yikes.0 -
80/10/10 is a raw vegan diet fad...I will just politely say that setting percentages for macros doesn't work and that this diet highly ignores the fact that protein and fat are ESSENTIAL nutrients whereas carbohydrates are non-essential and should be determined based on physical activity.
These type of dieters do ridiculous things like eating nothing but fruit in ridiculous amounts all day and often these people have serious fears (orthorexics) about fat and consumption of animal products as being "toxic"0 -

I thought the 80 would be protein. LOL.0

Consumption of animal products IS toxic. That is the ONLY place Cholesterol is found. And, what is the number one cause of death in the US right now? Heart disease. What causes heart disease, you ask? Cholesterol.0 -

This is the "lipid hypothesis". Dietary Cholesterol is not the same thing as blood cholesterol.0 -

Dietary cholesterol is, at strongest, only loosely related to blood serum cholesterol levels. And it has less to do with HDL vs LDL levels. It is also strongly debated, among medical professionals, how much it should be cut from the diet when someone has high serum cholesterol levels.
Much stronger relations are total lipid (fat) intakes and activity levels. HDLs are carrying fats to be metabolized by the body, where LDLs are carrying them to be stored (simplified version). Obesity is also a stronger link to heart health. True, it is often connected to high cholesterol (and especially high LDLs). But that doesn't mean that consuming animal products in appropriate levels is toxic.0 -

I've been following this lifestyle for a week or so now and I feel great but I should admit that I don't follow the 80/10/10 to a T. I eat my beans, nuts and seeds when I like.0

Saying heart disease is caused by cholesterol is grossly oversimplified to the point of being completely false. Heart disease is caused by the intermingling of many causes, first and foremost being lack of exercise, poor diet, genetics ect ect ect. A poor diet may include too high of cholesterol, but cholesterol is not actually bad for you in and of itself. It's actually essential and the body produces it's own.0 -
These people are gonna look GREAT when all their hair falls out from lack of fat in their diets! Can't wait to see pics!0

Good luck on your 811 journey. I've been on it for a year now. Your going to feel wonderful!0

......That sounds so dumb.0

If someone hasn't said it, I'll be the first to.
If you have various health issues, talk to your doctor before following any particular diet. Especially diabetics, reactive hyper/hypoglycemics, those with heart issues, etc. And for those hyper/hypoglycemics and diabetics, this wouldn't be an ideal lifestyle for you.
Everyone has different bodies and different lifestyles. For instance, if I start hitting over 150g of carbs a day, I start feeling like absolute garbage.
ETA, to the poster who said cholesterol causes heart disease....Stop being ignorant. Do some research and gain some knowledge before you start to type things out on some public forum.0 -
Holy crap, I would be eating almost half a kilogram of carbs per day at this ratio.
Good luck with that, but I'll keep to my magical ratio over the last month, which has evened out to around 37/44/180 -
I can't quite fathom how that many carbs a day is doing anyone any good unless you're running a marathon everyday, and even then you wouldn't be very successful as eating such little protein would mean your muscle recovery would be almost non existent!
Ridiculous.
And I like to think of myself as a fad diet connoisseur :P0 -
Can u survive n sustain doing something like this forever????
I just don't get the point what would make a person resort to measures like these to lose weight.. U WON'T be able to keep it off once u lose!
The whole idea of being on MFP is that u eat right, exercise right n lose weight so that u can maintain it all your life! Proteins n Fats are ESSENTIAL, do not drop it to such horrendously low levels.0
