Offensive? Speed dating - women under sz 8 labels checked

I think that the dating thing is fine, I'm a UK size 8-10 so that would be a US 6-8 and I just see it as some men DO have preferences. For example, some men prefer 'bigger' ladies and there are websites and dating forums encouraging and supporting this but I don't think I've ever heard of a website only targeting the smaller size demographic so is that concidered controversial? No, because psychological studies have been conducted where participants had to assign personality traits to both smaller and bigger ladies. Unfortunately, the stereotypes were that bigger ladies were 'unfit, lazy, had no control' but that smaller ladies were 'heartless, cold and probably career motivated.' Now we all know that these are massive stereotypes and you can have a bigger lady who is an extremely hard worker and a smaller lady who is lazy, it figures. However, you specifically design something to be targeted toward smaller sized ladies and its controversial and outrageous (because of the stereotype) but targeting bigger ladies is seen as them 'believing in themselves and feeling beautiful no matter what.'
Different gender but my boyfriend is incredibly thin and has fully been called a 'skinny freak' before which some people respond to by saying 'well they called you skinny so thats not really an insult, at least you're thin.' To which he responds 'its an insult to my build and therefore to me, how would you feel if I called someone a fat slob? You'd be outraged. So why is it not the same for thin people?'
I don't know. The speed dating thing doesn't bother me but stereotypes do.0 -
i see this as being no different than speed dating events related to height, age, gender, ethnicity, career fields, etc.
since when did people's sexual attractions and physical preferences need to become politically correct?
if people dont like it then organize your own event ..
This. If they can have christian mingle sites, different racial sites, wealthy men sites, etc. then why can't they have one for specific weight/measurements?
I also have to respectfully disagree with the people saying that they have a bad PR person. We're all on a fitness/weight loss site talking about it, aren't we? & I'm sure many other people are talking about it, too. All press is good press.
Edited to fix spelling.0 -
That's just crazy. So any woman who wears above a size 8 is not attractive?? That's a rather narrow minded chauvinistic view especially for the year 2012. No wonder so many women have body image issues. Marilyn Monroe would have been too 'fat' to join. And no restrictions for the men?0

It is no different to a BBW meet is it. Is that OK because it is "big" women only?
Good point^^0 -
Isn't this the kind of behavior that make young girls do ANYTHING just to be skinny....anything, to the point of hurting themselves to be "accepted"?
Will society ever place such demands on a man to have washboard abs, a 10inch pen!$, and a head full of hair..............to be considered "attractive"?0 -

Men need money. Women need tiny waists and big tits.0 -

Lol....I don't care how much money he has....at SOME point you're gonna HAVE to look at him without thinking "WTF!!".0 -
Everyone involved there knows exactly what they're getting into. If those women are happy with that arrangement and want to date shallow guys, that's fine with me; take them out of the dating pool so no one else has to deal with them. It seems like a win on every side. It certainly seems better to know the guy's attitude up front than have him lie to get into a relationship and spring it on her later.0

I think the offensive thing is the fact that there's no max size given for guys. If you're gonna be like this and make sure no 'fat' girls go, then do the girls a favor and also keep the 'fat' guys out. Not that I'd be admitted with my 12, but I'm just saying: at least measure both genders to the same standard!
^^ This - keep it equal across the board0 -

Context, context. It's for TV.0 -
I don't know that I really think about this. I definitely have a personal asthetic, but I would have missed out on a couple of fun boyfriends over the years if I stuck strictly to it. At the same time, how many times do we hear about someone's online dating disaster "so I drove up and they were [shorter, taller, older, heavier] than their online picture and profile said so I just drove away.
As far as the comparison to women who want sugar daddies, honestly that argument doesn't hold water in this scenario because there are niche-y websites based strictly on women and men looking for that relationship.
I don't know, we're all looking for something, so why not make it easier to find it?0 -
The irony here is that a woman can wear a variety of sizes, depending on who made the clothing, because there is no "standard" sizing.0
-
Who would this motivate?
The jeans I'm wearing today are 6s but the work trousers I wore yesterday were 10s. Am I in or not?0 -
I think it's great!
Get all the shallow d-bags together with people who like being judged for their clothing size, and let them make each other miserable.0 -

funny thing is i lived in NYC for a long time and went to a few speed dating events with friends. one had a height requirement for guys and they also checked at the door. i thought it was hilarious because my friend who's 5'9 likes taller men and what she was running to online was a bunch of guys who would say they were 5'11 and when she'd meet them they'd be more like 5'7
and yeah guys who didnt meet the height requirement went allowed in0 -
I hope they're checking his bank account and job at the door too.0
-
I skimmed this. Are fat dudes admitted?0

Short, sweet, and to the point.
I like the cut of your jib, ma'am!0 -
Who cares? If you don't agree, don't go.
I know what I want, and I'll stop when I find it.
Under a size 10 isn't skinny. It's fit and healthy.0 -

Agreed - anything related to dating is always going to be preference / I just find it sad to limit yourself one way or the other.0 -
I'm a size four...and anyone who would only consider dating me because of my size is too much of a douche for me.0
-
I skimmed this. Are fat dudes admitted?
Only the rich fat dudes so it could be fair0 -
I think its great. They let me know right up front that no matter what size I am, I am not interested in the people that are going to be there!0
-
Proud + size 10 girl here.
Everyone is entitled to thier opinion and preference.
With that being said....
<
Too bad they would miss out on all this :laugh:0 -
I think it's just stupid! I understand preferences and television, but it's just not very smart.
Obviously a woman who is a size 10 and is 5'11 looks quite a bit different from a woman who is the same size whom is eleven inches shorter.
Either way, who cares!0 -
Fat women* are pretty rare in NYC from my observation (other than tourists I suppose). This is meant to be controversial and garner attention as opposed to truly weeding out a large segment of the population. I think they should have a "buff guys only" speed dating event. I volunteer to do "buffness checking" at the door.
*not implying that size 8 is fat - on some people it might be and others it surely would not be
Do you live in NYC? Because I do, and I know, see, and socialize with tons of people who are bigger than a size 8. So many people.0 -
sounds like just another cop out for guys who don't have the nards to go up to a woman and talk to her.0
