rkorduner - I have never really tried to lose weight before either. I was fine before kids. Now, I feel like I need to lose. Also, I had blood work done in June-ish and my cholesterol was a bit high. Not bad, but not in the good range. Anyway, for these reasons I would like to lose some weight and be healthier. I have an official weigh in on Fridays right now - and will have on Mondays for this group. That's fine, I'll be better on the weekend hopefully. But, I am guilty of stepping on the scale most days in the mornings. I always do it the same time, but only take the official days and compare those results. I do think its more of a hinderence though.
I just want to apologize in advance for not using names. I might eventually but am horrible at remembering names. I will likely refer to you withyour screenname. Sorry. Unless your name happens to just click with me - as Kim's has - or I go back and figure it out where you wrote it, I likely won't know it. I hope no one thinks I am doing that on purpose. I'm like that IRL too. Sorry.0 -
Okay, here goes... My name is Paul. I am 52 years old, with two sons: Travis is 27, lives in San Antonio, and is married to a beautiful wife, Edith (Flor Edith), and they have a nearly two-year old daughter, Maddie (I'll put up a pic when I figure out how); and another son Tim who is a graduating senior at UCO in instrumental music performance. Enjoy bicycling for pleasure/recreation, gardening, playing the cello as part of a wedding (string) quartet, and amateur radio (callsign N5PT). My wife and I both are pre-diabetic, I have been overweight pretty much my whole life with a couple of short-lives excursions into "normal weight" which I could not sustain. Trying to get more active - joined the gym here at work last week, taking "gut busters" core training sessions 2 x per week, playing wallyball, and strength training (3 x per week). Most of my problem is portion control and post-dinner sessions in the freezer/fridge - mainly ice cream!
I hope to learn from you guys and I'll try to include those things that have worked for me to keep me on the straight and narrow. One thing I am trying to do more is be active, go upstairs in the evening and work on the projects I have put away in the past due to lack of time or failing interest. I seem to do better staying off the couch that way. My wife is getting over a Large hernia operation that didn't heal right and she can't come upstairs yet. I feel guilty leaving her by herself, but she doesn't seem to mind! Of course, keeping food diaries, and logging the "feelings" will help...i just have to keep on doing it even when I falter (Chili's 2 days ago - had the chicken-fried steak! I never have chicken-fried steak?!?)0 -
Hi everyone,
I didn't really introduce myself either. My name is Amy. I'm 49 years old, married, no children. 2 dogs (shepherd mixes) and 2 cats (black short hair).
I feel like I've been on a diet my whole life. I know how to do it, just not how to stick with it. I'm an emotional eater - eat when I'm happy and when I'm sad, frustrated, angry, etc.... I sometimes find myself just grabbing anything out of the pantry or fridge and eating without thinking about it.
Living in Southern California, I have a long commute every day. Sometimes I get really hungry on the drive home and will stop with the excuse that I need to buy something at the market for dinner and end up also grabbing cookies or a candy bar to munch on the rest of the way home. I haven't done it in a couple of weeks, but hope by acknowledging the problem here I can come to terms with it.
Paul, try brushing and flossing your teeth right after dinner. I find it really helps me not think about eating more later in the evening.
I'm really happy I found this website and this group (thanks to Kim).

Yaaa found you all! Did 25 min on elliptical today. Finally lost a couple pounds... need to get on and log them though! I am so relieved. I am on my 3rd week, but only 1 week on the MFP site. So nice to have friends to encourage. My goal... NOT TO GAIN THEM BACK OVER THE WEEKEND! (LMAO)
GOOD LUCK see you for check in on Monday!!0 -
OK... didn't do an intro.... My name is Rose. I am 45 and have a daughter 11 and a son 8. Got a late start! I am re-married this summer and having a wonderful life. The happiness has put on at least 10 lbs. I think I have gained and lost the same 10 lbs at least 100 times!. I have always had to watch my weight and have not been down to my goal weight in years. I know I can do it but i am an emotional eater.....
Eat when I 'm happy and Eat when I'm sad!
I LOVE to eat.. especially Pasta and Deserts... my down fall... right to the old hips....
I know I need to make life style changes and I feel I am ready. It needs to be a life time comittment to make the right choices.
I want to look good for my kids and my husband... oh .. did I forget to mention? MY SELF!!
Nice to meet you all and look forward to joining you on this journey.:smooched:0 -
Really glad to meet everyone here!
Here goes...
My name is Ian. I live in Columbia, South Carolina and am 26 years old. I am married to a very awesome wife and we have a cat! I work at a state agency in the media/video department. In my spare time, I like to go out and recover lost artifacts from the Civil War. I am quite a history buff!
I quit smoking back in 2005. I was a 2 pack a day smoker! it seems that I gained at least 30 pounds once I kicked the habit, cold turkey! I have always been a 'big boy' but it's time for a change!
I want to get down in weight because I never have been a 'skinny' person. I seriously started to feel like I was just meant to be big. Then I got it in me one day, "Ian! You've got to make a change my friend!"
And so, my change is in progress!0 -
Sooo today I was a bit bad and ate a cup of ice cream. Blech. But after doing so I threw the cartons I had laying there out. Scooped it down the sink. Hope that because it's not there I won't be tempted to eat it. I have to say one of the hardest parts is being honest with myself about what I have eaten just because it's so easy to lie and say I didn't. Sooo I had way toooolso manycalories today. Bad idea. But I am hoping one day isn't too bad and that I can dance
those cals tonight when we go to the bar (where I will be the dd do that I don't have to worry about THOSE cals too. Haha. I want to smoke so bad too but it's been like over a week now since I had my last cigg. We will see if I can beat it.

I thought I was about to have a heartache just a little while ago.
I had just turned on my Wii Fit Plus and was doing the Island Cycling. After I get about a half mile into it, BOOMM! The power goes out for about 2 seconds and then back on. I was like, okay, that was a free half mile...
I go and use the bathroom and I noticed that the Wii didn't turn back on, nor is it responding to the Wiimote. So, I press the button the the console. Nothing happens...................
I start scrounging around for the Best Buy paperwork because we purchased the extra Warranty with it. I get on the phone and get routed to a queue. As I look over the paperwork, I turn back around to notice that the orange light is illuminated on the Wii.
WOO HOO and Phewww!!!
I got on there and all seems to be fine. Even did 30 more minutes of cardio added on to the 30 minute workout I had this morning!
-Ian0 -
Ok so I guess since I have time I'll introduce myself. My name's Jessica, I'm 23, 24 in Jan. I've been married for 2 1/2 years, we have a beautiful 8 month old daughter named Olivia, who has recently started me on the I always move and get into things work out. We also have a tank full of chiclids, which I can't seem to spell. We had to get rid of our 2 dogs and 2 cats when I got pregnant so we coud move into something more affordable However plan to get a dog when our daughters perhaps 2 or 3.
We're hoping to rent a house, we get to go see it next Wednesday and would be so much better to have a 3 bedroom of our own rather than a 2 bedroom in a 12 unit building. Boy do kids take up a lot of room!
My original weight was 115 pounds at my skinny/healthiest (I'm 5'0") After going through Culinary School and being in a comfortable relationship I got up to 140, and then getting pregnant and being high risk and doing nothing but sitting on my butt and eating whatever I wanted I ballooned to 204 at my largest. I'm presently at 171 I would like to get to at least 120. It is a lot of hard work but once you start losing it, what a motivation!! I'm working part time at The Home Depot, yay, just kidding not yay at all. However I'm on my feet the whole time I'm there which also has been helping!
Good luck toeveryone and I can't wait til we start having check ins and get more recipes!! By the way are we having a specific day each week for the recipes?0 -

Ah! That was so cool! I went to Columbia for spring break in 04 (well really to visit a friend there and then we went to Myrte Beach) And we went and visited a spot, I forget the name of the town but it had a plantation house and some of the original stone walls around it, a blacksmith shop and a really old cemetary, it was a blast! I REALLY wanna go to Ghettysburg, I'm also a huge Paranormal freak, I'd love to go back to school to become a parapsychologist (spelling?)0 -
Hey guy's I finally lost two little pounds... why doesn't my ticker up-date? Am I suppose to do something or is it automatic....:blushing:0

Hello Everyone!
I am actually at work, pulling a 3rd shifter 2nite. FuN FuN lol.
rkorduner- I wanted to tell you that I used to be in your shoes. My advice is you know noone is going to be there to push you to do this right? You have to get self-motivated and disciplined. Make a promise to yourself to atleast go for a walk everyday and just try your best to eat right. Not necessarily cut out everything you like, but ration it. And if you drink alot of soda, cut it out too. I promise that within the first couple weeks you will feel so good about youself, and after time will really learn that you have the power and have had it this entire time. Some people just dont realize how strong they really can be. Also, definitely dont weigh in everyday. That could be very discouraging if you dont see the results you were hoping for. And lastly, DONT GIVE UP! Hope that helps:)
Everyone- I read over all the intros and I can already tell this is going to be a blast. Everyone is so wonderful, and I have learned alot already. Kim, you have already came up with some great recipes and ideas, thank you. If anyone ever needs to talk, I'm all ears:)
Hope you all have a great night:)

okie doke i guess it's my turn to introduce myself....well i feel left out here cause everyone is married and with children...well anyway My name is Marianne I'm 23 years old I live in Honolulu, Hawaii...No children, yet but I have a boxer/pit and his name is KING. We love to take morning walks together at the park. I'm a ward clerk/nurses' aide on a pediatric ward mainly focusing on the sick ones i.e fever, pneumonia, respiratory distress and such. I also go to school part time trying to get into a nursing program.:ohwell:
I've been recently realizing that I'm an expert at yo yo dieting and it needs to stop now before it gets worst. I was 160 in 06' then 130 in 07 'in 08' i was gradually going back up i was 150-155 stayed like that for awhile and now im 163.5lbs...:explode: I'm only 5 feet so that's big for me...
So the first time i lost all the weight i was on a strict diet of a regular breakfast ( one cup cereal and one cup 1% milk with a banana) lunch and dinner was lettuce and tomato with dressing and water all day long, when i got hungry i would eat fruit. for exercise I bought the slim in 6 dvd's and i love it! to this day (3 years later) i still use it, i also ran 20 minutes at 4.5 speed at the gym. I lost a good 10 pounds in one month.
wow now that i think of it i really straved myself...so here I am looking for new ways to lose weight and to meet new people and gain some motivation!!!:flowerforyou:0 -

Click on the "My Home" tab and then you'll see an option to Check-In. There, you can enter your weight in and that will update your ticker! :-)0 -
So Ian, I noticed you talk about the WiiFit and love it alot. When you talk about cycling, is there actual equipment for that? If so, thats really neat:)0

Hey Jeannie,
I wish there was a Wii Bike! LOL! Actually, you stand on the Wii balance board and step in place to mimic the pedaling and hold the Wiimote like the handlebars to steer. When you go up hills, you have to step quicker to make it up the hills. There are 5 different modes you can play- Beginner, Medium, Island View, Expert, and Free Cycle. Expert by far is the most challenging, or at least for me it was. You have to cycle up the mountain to get some of the checkpoints and it took me about 45 minutes to do. But, I did not once get bored!!!
Also, I played the Free Cycle for the first time last night. It allows you to just ride your bike for 30 minutes and do whatever you prefer.
So far, I love the Wii Fit Plus and it's a HUGE upgrade to Wii Fit.

I know it's not check-in day, but I figured I would toot my own horn here-
Just got back from a 4 mile jog!

11:26 per mile
737 calories burned

Well, I was horrible last night...I got home at 11:30 and I was thristy for beer. I indulged in quite a few beers, slice of pizza and popcorn...my total weakness is Sam Adams Octoberfest, it only comes out once a year. You know what is sad, I kinda hide that pizza in the veggie crisper. I know that no one would look there for food. As I was heating it up, I told my husband he would die if he touched it. Pretty sad and pathetic. Dieting, I think, can bring out the evil in me.
I also had a pop at work yesterday. My first in about a week. I just love my cola at work to give me my sugary and caffeine jolt. Today, I will not have one. In fact, I am not going anyway near the cafeteria. Otherwise, I end up with a pop and cookie or dessert of some sort.
I was nearly 800 calories over my limit; but, stayed within the fat zone...so, today, I take my sorry *kitten* downstairs and workout before I go to work. When I get home, I am going right to bed. Damn Octoberfest!!!!0 -

I use to LOVE beer. Just a Budweiser would do the trick for me. Actually, a few of them! I have to plan my weeks out in advance for splurge days. For example, if I know I'm going to someone's birthday party, general get-together, etc, I will work my butt off the days before and make sure I have stayed within my limits.
Then, when the day comes for the beer, I try to sip it.
Bad thing for me: When I drink, I feel I have to have a cigarette when I drink. That's the main reason I try not to drink anymore. If I was to start back on one of them, it would be like I have thrown all of my hard work away.
You're going to do fine! Just keep up the good work and when a challenge comes your way, push yourself to choose the right thing!
-Ian0 -
The worst for me when I go out drinking with friends is being realllllly bored. I mean it's fun to be with them but being 22 it's hard to remember that I don't have to drink or smoke to have fun. I did like I said go over cals by like 350 from my lunchtime snack, but I went for an hour walk with my bffl and pushed her two year old the whole way. I was so proud of myself though because a week ago we did the same thing an I hurt the whole time and I pulled my groin and complained the whole way. This time I was able to walk quick and not need a break and didn't pull anything AND didn't complain once the whole time. In fact I could have gone longer. So even though I am not sure about my weight my endurance is soooooo much better just after a week. Woooooo! I didn't realize how out of shape I was before this.0

I wish we could pick and choose what we want to quote it would make it so much easier and much smaller in cases like these. Ian I'm totoally with you! I originally quit June of last year when I found out I was pregnant, then started up again after I was done nursing, and quit again. I have to admit I had a batchlorette party and then a wedding and I did have a puff or two, but it's always social and with beer involved. I was also a lover of bud, bud light to be exact and lienenkugels of all kids (originally from WI) but have now switched to MGD 64.0 -
The important things is to just get back on track and not to let one day defeat you. We did not become overweight in one day. Just try to have more good days than bad ones and you'll be fine.
I was thinking all morning about having a scone at a bakery near my house. Just looked up the calories and it was 450 for one! I had an English muffin with smart balance spread instead and I'm glad I checked.

WOW! One scone is 450!? I'm glad there aren't any bakeries near my house! :laugh:0 -

I haven't had a beer in almost a month and haven't had a soda(non-diet) in almost 2 months. I have been drinking water with the Propel flavored packets. Different alternative to just plain water and only 5 calories per serving.
Even when I go out to dinner, I'll get Unsweet Tea with Lemon and add a packet of Splenda.
We have a birthday party we are going to in 2 weeks and I'm only wondering how I'm going to be able to combat the urge to drink a beer.
ALSO
Did you know?
Did you know that one 12 Oz. Beer has more pure alcohol than a 3 oz shot of Wiskey?
Did you know that Wine Coolers have the most pure alcohol per serving for any alcoholic drink?
And also did you know:
Say you were to start drinking at 9 p.m. You only have one drink per hour. You stop drinking at 1:30 a.m. Your BAC is 0.14. At 2:00 a.m., your BAC rises to 0.16 because your body takes a while to absorb the alcohol. You go home and sleep and wake up at 7 a.m. Your BAC is still at 0.09 which is legally intoxicated. At 9:30 a.m., your BAC is only at .05 which means you are still impared. It's not until 1 p.m. that you are back to a BAC of 0.00.......
Something to think about the next time you try to go into work the next morning after a drink or two.. LOL!
-Ian0 -
Kinda of scary the BACs; cause, I go to work and push narcs and heart meds0
