I have read all 3. I thought they were a good read. Yes they are "word porn". Isn't that the point. Christian Grey had a ton of baggage for sure but our baggage makes us who we are. His baggage made him a dominant sex god. It's a piece of "fiction". Would I like to go visit the red room that would be a "HELL YES I WOULD". Fiction...Fantasy....that is the entire point of this book.

Oh and if you really want a good BDSM fantasy book read The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by Anne RIce. It is pretty wicked. Like the previous poster said the 50 shades is a bit vanilla.

There are way better trashy romance novels out there. It's very obvious this woman didn't have a publisher.

I demand my money back and an apology from EL James. She has no business writing anything than a supermarket circular.

I agree that it seems a lot like Twlight! I'm only 60? 70? pages into the first book, but the Twlight-likeness jumped out at me.

I really enjoyed the books! I know they are NOT great literature in any way! But I really enjoyed the story line about how they fell in love. The 3rd book was by far my favorite as well because it definitely evolved to more of a love story!

I read them, and enjoyed them. Literary genious, no. Yet, I read all 3 and didn't feel as though I was wasting my time. I read to escape, and that's exactly what they did for me...took me out of my reality. I do have to say, it cracks me up how many people on here are saying how poorly written, etc., etc., and yet, you read all 3 books? Really? If you were THAT offended by the poor writing, why would you subject yourself to more? Just sayin'...

The books are terrible, in my opinion. But addictive. The author knows how to make you want to keep reading. However, Grey as a character is horrible. I don't really understand how all the girls are like, "Ooo Greeeyyy. So dreamy and perfect!" Okay, handsome and rich I get, but also controlling with a crap ton of baggage, and kind of a suffocating jerk. I'm not sure how that's appealing at all. Also Ana always gives into to everything, despite her being a "different sort of character who will stand her ground".

Ana had the potential to being a really cool character, until she kept giving into everything just because he sexed her and gave her googly eyes. Geez, it's just kind of demeaning.

Edit: Also, I might be the only female in the world who has read this and thinks this way. Feel free to disagree with me, this is just my two cents.

This. I refer to these types of books as a junk food read. I read my classics and then I have my "junk" food.

I'm reading them on the sneak in e-book form. haha. It's addicting, yet crappy because the story line is practically IDENTICAL to fricken Twilight. And I've read better sexy times.

I was thinking the exact same thing that it is so much like Twilight.

Aparently they only 'seem' poorly writted as the woman who wrote them is from the uk trying to write an american style book, so theres a mixture of english writted (ana's obsession with england) and american writing, so from uk and america there's a chance people from england think the america grammer and spellings are wrong, and americans think the english written grammer and spellings are wrong.

Im a big fan of twilight books, so because the charactors were similar i was forever comparing... no amount of whipping will ever compare to edward breaking the bed... nope LOL

I'm with ya. I read the first one out of curiosity. Its too wordy. Grey isn't smooth at all. And Ana, well, poor thing. Innocent? Ehh..Will I read the other two. I haven't decided yet. I guess it depends on whether or not they make the movie, which I'd be very curious to watch for some reason.

I will say though, that I can relate to Ana. In some ways. But i was young(er).
  • I am almost done with Book III and I completely agree with you. I love the story line behind it. I do believe the author rants a wee bit too much with her adjectives, however, the book really is one that most women wish they could live vicariously through. I recently had an argument with a woman who completely tore apart the author and would not listen to a word I was trying to tell her. We almost had a brawl...so I let it go and let her have her uneducated opinion. I just wish I had wrote those books.

I read all three and they were fine. I am an avid reader and read for different reasons. I saw this book as pure entertainment. It was entertaining and the sex wasn't too over the top. I read erotic novels all the time, so this was nothing special. No, the writing wasn't good, but I wasn't expecting a classic like To Kill a Mockingbird. I think sometimes we expect too much from something that is simple entertainment.

Quite honestly? From what little I read of it, which isn't much, it's like a horrible, horrible, fanfiction. I really don't understand how something with such cheesy pron did actually get published.... No, just no.

My hairdresser was speaking about it with one of her collegues yesterday, and it took all of me to not tell her to 'go get some decent smut'.

Really guys? No. Erotic fiction is supposed to be exactly that, not make me laugh from the unfortunate choice of descriptions. The only thing good about this was the dramatic reading by Gilbert Gottfried.

There's plenty of better reads online, and those are for free.

Oh, and read the Marquis de Sade...now THAT is some crazy good porn!

THE Marquis de Sade? The one that wrote 120 Days of Sodom?
I think that's like reading the newspaper. If you want to read something everyone talks about, wonderful, but that really isn't erotic.

Personally, I think 'Topping from Below' is a very nice read and decent smut. One of my personal favorites~

OMG I LOVED these books! After Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter seriers, Twilight series, and the True Blood series I was feeling sad...(yes, I am a book worm!)

I felt a real connection with Ana Steele....I too was a classics buff and secretly STILL wishing for my Mr. Darcy! LOL

I am currently rereading the 1st book. I find i like it the best. Don't get me wrong, they did get better as they went along but the 1st one (for me) is when everything was mysterious and new.

I agree with you. I actually skipped over the sex parts of the books though when reading it. It felt like I was reading porn and I'm not into porn at all. I have to read a whole series though when I start a book. The story line was okay but I wouldn't read the books again. In fact, I'm glad I didn't pay for them. I got the e-books for free and they are now deleted from my kindle fire!

My wife read them, and then talked me into readign them as well, I didn't have a major problem with them, I can see how they were aimed at woman, especially when every male is supposedly the best looking guy on the planet, and all have money and are great in bed. Also the storyline about taking some guy who has a lot of issues, and being the woman that can control him, I can see a lot of woman erally liking this. Honestly some of the sex scenes had me laughing, I mean if woman are expecting sex to always be this good, no wonder some woman are unhapy in their relationships after reading this.

It was a decent love story, and yes the characters have flaws, but there are quite a few woman I think would stick it out, and have stuck it out with guys with similar issues,

They were a good quick read, that didn't take a lot of thought. I also think this is a good entrance into erotic fiction and BDSM, it wasn't over the top, and pretty tame from my understanding. It definittly open my wife up to talking about different things, and trying new stuff out. There not great, but not every book is a maserpiece.

The writer (if you can consider her one) does use some unfamiliar expressions (like calling her vag "my sex"), but the ridiculous overuse of the same words is NOT just a cultural thing. Its seriously amateur and could have been helped a lot with just using a thesaurus!

I only got through the first one (barely) and didn’t subject myself to the others, because I was already screaming at the book for its terrible writing. If I had to read “Inner Goddess” one more time, or put up with any more gasping, murmuring, whispering, or “blinking up at him”, I was ready to smash my eReader against the wall.

I LOVED this amazon review of the second book. Someone used their Kindle to do a word count....

I "read" the first one and I use that term loosely. Basically I skipped a lot because I got so bored with the childishness of it, especially the emails. It seemed like she was just trying to fill up pages by putting in all the email banter back and forth. It was kind of stupid.

Also what I think people are missing here is that Christian was the Dom in the relationship which was why he was so "controlling". In a BDSM lifestyle the roles aren't always just relegated to bedroom play. The dominate person in that sort of relationship could have control over the sub in other aspects of his/her life as in this book where he controlled what she ate, gave her an allowance and all that. In all honest I never felt that he was a controlling jerk, probably because I sort of understand the lifestyle and I did a little research on it. Google is an AMAZING tool!
