How do I start climbing?
There is a rock wall at my gym, but I have never tried it before and I don't have a buddy to go with me that could feed me rope or anything. Does it always require two people? Is there a way I could climb by myself?

New Sweetener "Nectresse"
Anyone have thoughts about it? Saw a commercial today and it looks super neat.

Is the TDEE equation wrong?
Hey guys, I was just fooling around with my fitness spreadsheet and noticed something kind of interesting! I started using my Fitbit again at the beginning of this month because I hadn't been losing weight over the summer. My estimated TDEE w/ 9,000 steps per day, (which is a good amount of walking on campus) totals 2,100…

Protein Powder? Exercise?
It's the dawn of my newest fitness revelation! I just figured out that such a thing as "endomorphs" exist in the world and they are not in fact aliens, but people just like me. To combat evil body type (how did I ever not realize it before!?) I have been trying over the past week to reduce my carbs to 40%. To achieve this,…

Not Losing, Need Help
Hi guys. I have been dieting for two years and have lost 85 pounds. Now that I am 20 pounds from my goal (which is 145 for 5'5" female, upper end of healthy) I am not losing weight, have not had my period for a few months, and I've been doing healthy exercise biking to classes (~3hrs/wk) while eating a 2,000 calorie diet.…

Not Losing?
I have been dieting for nearly 2 years, and I've lost 85 pounds. Over this past summer I have lost barely four pounds (despite being really active and eating about 2k calories per day.) I still weight 20 pounds more than my goal, which is the high-end of a "healthy" weight. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I walk…

Why You Should Eat More: A Lion's Tale
Hello guys and gals. I decided today to share my weight loss story with other people on MFP so that you can understand why it is essential to eat above your Basal Metabolic Rate. Many of you believe that 1200 calories a day is enough, or that it isn't important to eat back your exercise calories. I'm here to tell you why…

Why Dairy is the Devil
Hey guys! So I have a little story to share. For the last 6 months I have been on a plateau since upping my calories and doing some fine-tuning according to my summer job activity level. I was frustrated at losing absolutely no weight, and finally was inspired to try something different - I gave up dairy. Usually summer…

Vibram foot numbness help?
Hey guys. I bought a pair of Vibrams almost exactly a month ago and have been wearing them casually and on 2-3 mile walks a few times a week. I have never run in them, but recently I have noticed a numbness on the outside edges of my big toes. The Komodosports have a rubber toe cap that seems to press into my toe if I wear…

Fitbit question!
Help! I just got my Fitbit today and I am so excited to start using it for tomorrow. Will the device add exercise calories to my daily total if I keep my goals set as "custom"? Or should I let MFP set my new goal to my BMR and let all of my exercise/walking be added by Fitbit? The second option seems to make more sense but…

Cutting out dairy?
Hey everyone. I posted this in the regular forums but nobody replied, so I thought I'd ask your thoughts instead! What do you all think about removing dairy products from the diet? Ever since I started EM2WL, milk, greek yogurt, cheese and butter have all been staples to my daily intake and they help me to reach my protein…

Giving Up Dairy
So I've decided to give this a shot (probably starting next week) but I'm trying to keep my protein intake high, and currently yogurt and milk make up a large percentage of my daily protein. How can I cut out dairy and continue to eat a high-protein diet? I already know eggs, beans, and grains are a good place to start -…

Am I still doing this right?
For the past month I have been eating my TDEE -15%... and today, I'm still the same weight as when I started. I don't really understand what's going on. I have not lost any inches, nor lost any pounds on the scale (I think I may have gained a few but I'm not sure if that was "real" weight or not.) Either way, I feel like…

A little frustrated!
Hey fellow group members! I feel bad for posting such a complain-y post but I feel like I just need some mental support and you guys are all great to talk to. The past few weekends of weighing in have been a real letdown for me. I'm not sure if this is because of upping my calories (to TDEE -15%), working out new muscles,…

Need help with activity level definition
Hi guys! I'm trying to calculate my TDEE more accurately, but I don't know what activity multiplier I should choose because I find it hard to draw the line between work activity and "working out". For example, right now I'm working a summer job at a farm and I spend a good amount of time being outside, walking, bending…

It's been a month... why am I still tired?
Hey guys! I increased my calories from 1400 to 1650 about a month ago, once I realized my BMR is 1600 and that I had not been eating enough for pretty much four months. Before that, (over Christmas holidays) I was basically off my diet and gained several pounds, but prior to the holidays I was eating about 1200 calories…

WTF is my activity coefficient supposed to be
Okay, so I'm recalculating my calorie needs and I keep getting stuck on this part of the TDEE equation. Honestly, I don't know what to pick and it's starting to get really frustrating! I currently use walking as my exercise and travel about 3 miles each day for 5 days/week. According to RunKeeper I burn 250 calories on my…

Granola bar recipe improvements?
Hey everyone! I made some homemade granola bars yesterday and they turned out to be fantastic. My only problem is that every time I cook something I wind up think about how I can make it better. :P These bars were yummy, but also have a lot of carbohydrates relative to protein/fat. Recipe:…

Running... wait, or go?
I decided to get myself a pair of Vibram 5-Fingers once I lose 90 pounds (I only have 7 more to go) and I'm estimating that's going to take about two more months. But the thing is, with summer starting I'm really excited to start running again... only... my shoes right now are all normal padded running sneakers. I've read…

No loss in body fat?
In the last month I've lost 5 lbs and inches off of my neck, waist, and hips - but according to my spreadsheet, which uses the Military Body Fat equation, my body fat % is exactly the same as it was a month ago. What gives?

Chinese Takeout
Hypothetically, if I wanted to order Chinese for dinner, could I get a normally fried dish UNfried? I really like general tso's chicken, but it features basically fried nuggets doused in sauce. I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever asked to just have normal grilled chicken instead of the fried pieces, but still with…

Do you continue dieting when sick?
I've developed a cold over the past 5-ish days and I still don't feel better, so last night instead of eating my normal calorie deficit I consumed my TDEE instead. With final exams coming up and my immune system already compromised I thought it would be good to keep stress to a minimum, and eat to feed myself right. Do any…

Can protein make you sad?
For the past week I've been regularly eating above my protein goal, which is between 80g and 115g (20%). But today I'm feeling kind of down in the dumps for no apparent reason, and I was wondering if this is because my carb consumption has been lower? Anyone else have experience with this? I'm thinking about maybe stopping…

Minimalist shoes?
Does anyone have experience with "barefoot" type shoes, like for running? I've been considering getting a pair of Vibram FiveFingers for when I reach my goal weight but I want to hear more from people who have used them before first.

Need gym advice
I have a few questions about gym machines and workouts since I'm sort of a newbie. 1. How high of quality are stationary recumbent bicycles in terms of a good cardio workout? 2. Is it bad to stick to a recumbent bike or should I use more machines? I usually go to the gym 2 or 3 days a week and spend 20-30 minutes using…

Anyone halfway there?
Hey guys, I've lost 79 lbs and am working on the last 30. I'm trying to find some friends that are in the same boat as me, for motivation and support! I'm in college right now and making good food choices can definitely be a challenge. Add me if we seem similar, I'd love to meet new people.

Artificial Sweeteners
Does anyone know with any real certainty if there is a particular sweetener that is more "healthy"? I use Sweet n' Low most of the time, but I'm interested in Truvia since it's derived from plants. I've also considered switching to real sugar only but I think I might wait until I'm done losing weight for that.

Good brand for a scale?
Hey all! The scale my family has now has been in the basement for at least 3 years now and I have no idea how actually reliable it is. (One time I picked it up and put it somewhere else and wound up getting a 2-pound off reading than before it got moved around, so... lol.) It's functional, but right now I've got some extra…

Too Full!
I know people will be irritated at this topic, but for the past four months I was eating under my BMR. Upon realizing my mistake, I upped my calories by about 200. This is the first week I've been eating more food, and today my stomach seemed to hurt pretty much all day, like it was too full or something. It was actually…
