Anybody have any experience as a sponsored runner (for a non
I wondered if anyone has any experience or knows of resources for runner sponsorship. We have some family friends who lost a 10-year old this year and I felt led to contact them about combining my running endeavors to raise awareness and funds for the cause that was a major assistance to them in their son's last several…

Running on a beach? (calories burned)
I have an opportunity this weekend to take my "long run" of 8 miles on the beach. I am really looking forward to this, as we don't live near the ocean, but I just thought I'd try to find out if anyone knew what the ratio/difference is in terms of calories burned for a mile running on the sand as opposed to pavement/trail…

Why I have no problem tracking and weighing food for the res
I replied to a post the other day where people were wondering how long until you get to leave the "weigh and measure and track" phase of weight loss. For me, I have resigned to do this for the rest of my life, and here's why: I estimate that I spend 10 minutes a day specifically weighing, measuring, tracking, etc. 10…

I think we might ALL be off on calories for exercise
A thought dawned on me and I wonder if anyone has thought of this. It might be a minimal effect, but every little bit counts. Whenever we log an exercise, we use a database or an HRM that has - as its root - a calculation of how hard the heart worked during that time. For me, still in the 240's, when I run for an hour I am…

Anyone else on dailymile?
I use dailymile.com to track my exercise. It syncs with my Garmin 205, and it's a pretty cool way of interacting with other friends who also track their runs this way. You can also track mileages by bike, other exercises, etc. If anyone else is on there, I'd be happy to "friend" you there, too. My username over there is…

A losing streak to brag about
It just dawned on me a day or two ago that I have an 11-week losing streak on the scale. There have been a couple weeks where I didn't think I would actually lose, but it's been at least 1 pound for the 11 full weeks I've been on MFP. This Thursday will mark the end of the 12th week. And again I am not so sure I'll be…

HRM upgrade - ditch the Garmin and get an all-in-one?
Fairly soon, I will have accumulated enough points through mypoints.com (from reading emails and filling out surveys) to get a $50 Amazon gift certificate. (We usually earn $50-$75 a year in freebies this way). I was thinking this time I would use my earnings to go toward the purchase of an HRM. The Garmin I have is a 205…

What are you training for?
I restarted running on January 24. I had run for a few months in 2008 and other than that I have not run much in my life. However, I do have several events lined up to keep me motivated: 5K - March 19 5K - April 16 (it's actually Part II of the first one, and is an effort to beat your time) 10K - May 7 10K - July 2 I…

A full home gym, now what?
A couple weeks ago I was the very lucky recipient of a FREE home gym. Now I don't really know what to do. Can someone(s) share with me good sites for weights workouts? I am already running (over 15 miles/week) but I know and have known that this is something I NEED to integrate into my fitness plan. The picture below is…

Near my halfway point ... better post a picture
Well since it looks like it decided to cut off the rightmost inch or so of the picture, here's the deets: Pic on the left is me and my wife after a 5K I ran last Saturday (my 2nd in 4 weeks) at 254 pounds. The two shots on the right are from our move-in day last July 31. Within a few days of these pictures I weighed 303…

A half pound a day for 54 days
As of Tuesday evening, from the time I joined MFP I was still on a pound-every-2-days pace. If a pound is about 3500 calories, this means a deficit of 1750 calories per day. I'm netting very close to my target (1930) each day. Does this mean somehow that I'd trained my BMR to be 3680? Or is there something else at play…

Running pacing question for a planned "tempo run"
I have a "tempo run" scheduled tomorrow. It's the first deviation from "easy runs" on my schedule (this is the 7th week of the schedule and my 11th week running). I am nearing my very first 10K (31 days away now). The schedule has me running 4 miles, including 1 warm-up mile and 1 cool-down mile and then 2 miles at 12:41.…

How has your weight loss affected other areas of your life?
I have realized that my overall self-image is beginning to improve as I shed pounds that have clung to me for years and years. It got me to wondering how other peoples' lives change outside of weight loss. I have to admit that right now I am probably too hyperfocused on all the weight loss stuff, but I know it's helpful…

Anyone know much about ifit.com treadmills?
Was just gifted a pretty nice treadmill ... a C1800i by NordicTrack, and there's info on there about the ifit connectivity program. But based on what I'm reading on the ifit website and what I see in the owner's guide, the newer machines have a lot more flexibility. Does anyone have any experience with the ifit program…

Advice on OR a good resource for checking out HRM's
I know that there are a lot of heart-rate monitors out there, but I'd REALLY like to get an idea as to which ones are good, and which ones are not. How much do I want to spend? Not sure yet. I don't need a $175 Bodybugg, but I don't want a $20 Wal-Mart version, either. What brand(s) should I look at? I definitely know I…

Missed a run -- make it up tomorrow or skip it?
Tonight I actually suited up for a run - 3 miles - and then had the worst splitting headache that I can ever remember having. My wife gets migraines, and I don't *think* this was a migraine, but who knows. It lasted about 10 minutes, was mostly in the front area of my head, behind my temples and forehead, and I almost had…

Current and future running bloggers/blogging runners?
I just started a running and fitness blog and wondered who else has a fitness/running/nutrition based blog. I am going to use Google Reader to compile these and read through them for motivation. Mine is at: http://jeredruns.blogspot.com I have my MFP weight lost, pounds to go, as well as my odometer from www.dailymile.com,…

Should I reset "starting" weight to my highest from before M
I weighed 283 when I joined MFP ... 6 months before I was 303 and lost about 20 within a couple months and just basically hung out there for a few months until finding this site. So should I go back and alter my beginning weight to 303? Or leave it as it was when I actually joined the site.

Lightest weight running (a pretty big SV)
Passed through a couple of my mini-goals this week. 262 was where I took pictures so when I run my first marathon I can say "I went from 262 to 26.2" 261 was the lightest weight I've ever been running (back in 2008) before I stopped running and ballooned in weight. Now I'm 259. This means that I am doing less and less…

Could my stall-out in weight loss affect my workouts?
I posted earlier today on an unscientific theory I have regarding overcoming plateaus during weight loss (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/199401-6-weeks-in-67-pounds-to-go-and-stalled-out-not-to-worry ) After tonight's run, I'm beginning to wonder if the body is so desperate to stay at this weight that it won't…

Hit a mini-goal ... took some pictures (not posted) to compa
This weekend I passed through 262 pounds (albeit by just a half pound), but we took some pictures and measurements. I will someday be joining a "262 to 26.2" club started by a friend of a friend. From 262 to 26.2 is here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/From-262-to-262/190769180956172 So after another 20-30 pounds or so I'm…

6 weeks in, 67 pounds to go, and stalled out (not to worry)
This Friday will be 6 weeks since I joined MFP. I lost 19 pounds in the first 4 weeks, 1 pound the fifth week, and if this morning's "preliminary weigh-in" is any indication, I will be real close to zero for this week. So what, though? That'll still mean 20 pounds in 6 weeks. I could choose to focus on the "1 pound in 2…

C25K is done ... but I'm not!
Yesterday I ran my first 5K in almost 3 years, and only my 2nd ever. I entered a diary at dailymile.com and a modified version of it follows. But I freely call myself a runner now. It's a little source of pride of mine, now. I've begun pacing myself on my runs (all of which are 3 or more miles now), and it's just really a…

Strategic running with a 35.7 BMI
I've been running now for almost 2 months. This Saturday I have my first 5K of the year (my only other one was in May 2008). So up till now it's been just kind of a matter of getting going. I'm using the "Smart Coach" training tool at runnersworld.com to train for a 10K on May 7. In between now and then is the…

My Lenten Commitment (should I really put this in writing?)
I am going to give up soda. While I am a Christian, Lent to me is more of an opportunity for me to commit to something big to improve my life and the lives of those around me - not necessarily a specific rule or rules to follow. Last year it was Facebook. This year: diet sodas. One of the last vestiges of unhealthiness.…

Happy Mardi Maigre!
No "Fat Tuesday" for this group, right? "Mardi Maigre" means "skinny Tuesday" (unless Google translate has tricked me). So ... joyeux Mardi Maigre à tout le monde!

Did not handle my first compliment very well
While Skyping the inlaws the other day they commented on how they could notice my weight loss (15 on MFP, 35 since last August) ... I made some self-deprecating comments about the camera taking away a few or something like that. It was not a very gracious way to handle the compliments that I so enjoy and appreciate and are…

17 mini-goals ... how many do you have?
I have a few "deadline" goals in my signature, but embedded into the mini goals are a total of 17 different weights between my starting MFP weight (283) and my end goal (195). My first one is at 262 (21 pounds on MFP), but then they range from 2 to 10 pounds apart. To me it's a cool way of "unpeeling" almost 20 years of…

Calories burned ... 3 different figures
I have a dilemma. I generally end up with three different calorie figures for my runs. One on here, one on my Garmin, and one on www.dailymile.com where I track my workouts. For example yesterday, my Garmin said that my 2.12 mile run (23:46) burned 422 calories. The closest I could get on MFP was entering 12 minutes at a…

This isn't for your loved ones!
This might sound like a chastising, but it's not. YOUR HEALTH IS NOT FOR YOUR LOVED ONES! It's not for your spouse. It's not for your kids. It's not for your parents. It's not for your best friend who died. IT'S FOR YOU! That being said, we have all sorts of other areas where we can draw motivation. It might be all of…
