Tonight we went to Chicago ... the play.
http://www.theatreroyal.com.au/shows/chicago
I decided to dress the part, at least somewhat. I opted for my cloche hat, my buckle shoes and a lavalier that goes all the way down to my waist.
I also made some attempt at a 1920s pant suit, although my pants should have had wider legs.
We really enjoyed the show ... very well done! I have a soundtrack to it, so I was (quietly) singing along with most of the songs.

Heather: Every state in the US has its own school calendar. My DGD will be going back soon in Illinois, but in Oregon school doesn't resume until after Labor Day in early September. :flowerforyou: Enjoy your cruise!
Lanette: I'll join you in praying that everyone's AC works and no fires break out. I'm hoping for a reasonable breeze to help us stay a little cooler, but not a blow-drier breeze. :noway:
Joyce: My husband has no love for horses. :noway: His family had them when he was in grade school and he was kicked, bitten, and stomped as a child. He's always thought he developed diabetes because of injuries from being stomped. He was also exposed to polio at the local swimming pool when he was young. That is his other theory for his many autoimmune problems. No one else in his family has them. He's had a heavy burden healthwise.
Allie: It sounds like things are finally moving ahead. Good luck with getting everything you need from all of this. (((HUGS))) Prayers for Aunt Margaret in Heaven and the family that is still here.
Happy August, everyone! I've been working on a bump in my weight, and it is still there. I'll keep at it and will back where I want to be eventually. We are facing extreme heat for the next few days. I've already closed the blinds on our East facing windows. They're honeycomb blinds and have some ability to mitigate temperature.
I took the dog to the Vet yesterday because he has been losing weight and looking ratty. He has been sleeping in the garage since the fireworks on the fourth of July and it has put him into a depression. He has a course of medication to take for the next couple of weeks and I moved his dog bed next to my side of our bed. Poor little guy. This all started because he kept us awake into the wee hours of the morning crying when people were setting off fire crackers at the Fourth of July. This year they kept it up for most of a week. We had to get sleep to stay healthy, so we moved him into the garage. Next year we'll leave town or board him at the vet. :ohwell:

Thank you Lisa for being honest about your struggles. Hiding our true selves exacts a cost. I felt much better when I confessed my alcohol problem and have been managing really well since. Only one overindulgence in three months.
I am also someone who is always hungry. And I think about food all the time. Those weight loss gurus who say "Only eat when you are hungry" really make me laugh! I am nearly always hungry, especially in the afternoons. Unlike you I am able to fill some of that gnawing gap with low cal raw veggies and cottage cheese, which is a life saver. I also use Diet Coke occasionally to get me through the pm slump. We eat early, around 6 pm and then have our stewed fruit at 8 pm. Then some cheese and then a piece of chocolate. I am so lucky to have my 600 calorie exercise allowance to spend. I know that veggies taste bitter to you, which is a genetic thing. That is a real shame. Some research into other low calorie snacks might be helpful. Going hungry just makes life miserable. The more fibre you can get into you the more the gut gives off the "full" hormone.
I just know I am going to have to CICO rigorously for the rest of my life. No "natural appetite" stuff for me. I wish.
Sending (((HUGS))) and thanks for telling it like it is.
Recently I've read "10% Human" about the gut and "The Body Keeps The Score" about PTSD. Well, we both know about that.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -

If you would like to send your MS Ride kerchief in my direction I would love to sign it for my sister. She has MS and was recently informed she can no longer live on her own. Things are in the works to have her move from Columbus, Ohio over to Fishers, Indiana where my parents, single sister and married brother live. My parents have secured her an apt. As soon as they get the medical coverage and new doctors set up they will get her over there and set-up home health care for part of her day. She does not want to move and has resisted it for several years. Unfortunately neither her ex husband nor her two adult children will do anything towards her care. Sad situation but being nearer family will give her a better life in the long run. So message me for my address! Thanks for all you do for MS.

Hello, been lurking for a while and decided to come out this month.
The quick and dirty: 53yo, menopausal 5'4 195# and sedentary for decades in chronic pain and frequent intense hot flashes ( hobbling around like I was at least 80 years) but with Dr. clearing me (except telling me to LOSE weight) started eating healthy, eating less, and ramping up exercise since late April.
Slow going for sure, only a small bit of weight down, and the chronic pain has been largely replaced with DOMS pain from exercise ( so often I still hobble around) and the hot flashes have diminished some in length but not frequency or intensity.
TLDR: In other words, Hi and I am a hot mess, getting better, but a mess nonetheless.
August goals:
1) Ride bike to the gym (1.6 miles) Swim for an hourish ( 1 mile) and ride home (extra credit for doing so without wanting to die of exhaustion) at least 2 x a week.
2) swim at least 2 more times a week (3 miles/ 3 or 4 hours total a week)
3) strength training ( body weight exercise) 2 or 3 times each week - at least twice a week no matter how sore!)
4) lose 5 pounds
5) increase my step count
6) encourage and support my mother in law at her physical rehab sessions. I'm hoping she can get better enough for us to do nice long walks together this fall.
Thanks for listening, and I wish each and every one of you fantastic ladies a great day, however you define it!18 -
@cityjaneLondon what is stewed fruit? Sounds intriguing.
@Machka9 great outfit and I Love, Love, Love the hat!
@DanaReel180 please say hi to Dolly!
@lhannon062709 - hi, I'm a Texan here too. You are very strong and courageous and I'm pulling for the success of the new combo. Are you a bitter supertaster? I just found out that I am and finally I understand that these veggies that I think taste frankly poisonous just taste differently in my mouth. That was such a relief - to know I'm not just hard to please and picky - but these bitter veggies really don't taste the same to me as many people. I would read the phrase "pleasantly bitter"" and wonder who was out of her mind, me or the writer who honestly seemed to find something pleasant about bitter.

ryenday - My DH cooks some kind of fruit a few times a week, which we have almost every night for dessert. We have it with a bit of homemade yoghurt. It could be apricots, pears, apples and blackcurrants, or plums. He uses a fruit juice, a sprinkle of Stevia and sometimes a tiny bit of sugar for the very sour fruits like gooseberries or rhubarb. We love it and it makes me feel I am having dessert. I dock myself 130 calories for it. With the pears I often have calorie free caramel sauce. Makes it yummy.
PS - do you have an easier name?

Allie: So sorry for your loss!
Rori: My heart goes out to you. Sending you virtual hugs!
Lenora: Sorry to hear about your car. Hope it gets straightened out soon!
Margaret: I really cannot understand why people don't wear helmets and why cyclists feel that lights do not apply to them! I hope the young man learns from his close call!
Lisa: Thank you for sharing. This is indeed a life time journey! You will do it!
Ryenday: Glad to have you with us!
Cheri: Congratulations on your new low!
I got back on the horse after my brief break and managed to stay under 1200 pounds today. I did find that I was really hungry around 17h00, when normally we eat dinner at 20h00, so I went ahead and ate and will leave my DH to fend for himself later. I figure if I get hungry again, I will just head to bed to read or watch a movie.
Wishing everyone a wonderful start to the week and month!5 -
Heather, I don't really know what it would be called, but I'd love to try some - I have never "cooked" fruit except apples for pie, roasting pineapple on the grill and making lemon or lime curd.
I cook most all our dinners, but only simple stuff, roasts, grilled or roasted veggies etc. lol my meal plans are generally meat and potato (veggie actually rarely potatoes nowadays) with occasionally fruit or nuts for deserts. Otherwise I just have leftovers or make a smoothie.

I can do resolutions. I think.
Go swimming five times weekly and exercise for 20 minutes in water.
Work on family tree 30 minutes 4 times weekly--staff Family Center once weekly.
Keep on MFP everyday all month long even if no weight loss.
NOT break my toe or any other bone. Will go and clean my toe soon.
Organize the boy's toys.
Clean the refrigerator.5 -
It's a nice cool morning so far! Opened lots of windows to let a breeze flow through the house, got a walk in, then took an old fitted bedsheet (elastic pretty much ruined, it was in the rag bag) and fashioned a shade over my tomatoes so they don't get sunburned. We'll see how it does - kind of Mickey Mouse. If we don't get a strong breeze, it might stay on without a lot of help.
Katla - sorry to hear about your poor dog and the fireworks. GGRR. You'll like this - I heard on the news this morning that the local sheriff arrested some dipstick this past weekend who was setting off fireworks! In the midst of a burn ban no less. And the deputy had to call for assistance because the guy was resisting arrest. Hope they have a nice non-air conditioned jail cell for him to stew in for a few days.
Probably good thing I'm not a judge - they would have to build an addition onto the jail to house all the idiots like this guy. Throw the book at them!
Lisa - I never tire of hearing your story - or any of the stories you ladies share. I always find something inspirational in them and continue learning about my relationship with food and health. So glad you had the opportunity to reassess your goals and start back on the journey. You are such a good writer!!
Cheri - I'll celebrate with you! Keeping on target during a vacation was super!! You are ahead of the game!
Kelly - my DH was also diagnosed with RA in his late 40's. It attacked the joints in his hands and feet - so intriguing it's a "mirroring" arthritis- the same joint in both hands or feet would swell. They had him taking 12 or more ibuprofen a day until they could get him an appointment with a rheumatologist. . Then it was a stiff dose of methotrexate orally for a year (plus anti-nausea pills) which would put him in bed every weekend since he'd take it on a Friday night. Now it's basically prednisone and Celebrex. He was fired from his job (a little start-up landscaping company) and very depressed for a while. I think getting fired made him all the more determined to not let it get in his way. Stubborn Scorpio. Hope your DH is having good luck with the meds. My DH's does seem to flare depending on the weather/time of year too.
Heather - glad you found your passport! I've done similar and blame it on the gremlins who play pranks on me. When I was working I couldn't even decide what to wear each day, I'd be a wreck trying to figure out how to pack for 16 days. I'd probably pack ten outfits and only wear two the whole time/switching off.
Neighbor on the next street over has been re-roofing his house for the past 2 weeks and trying to finish. Lots of hammering and swearing going on, lol. I heard the scaffolding clatter to the ground a little bit ago, I guess no one was on it since I haven't heard the ambulance come. At least no chance of rain for a while if they have to stop because of the heat.
OK ladies, there's a little breeze so I'll put on my sunhat and see if the tomato sheet is flapping in the wind!
Keep Cool!

LISA!
Thank you for sharing with us. Your story inspires me to keep on going. I give lip service to weight loss being a lifestyle change but I am struggling lots of days. Most of the time its a mental struggle. MFP and especially all the ladies here help me to stay on track.

Oops! Had a drink this evening which was not in the plan.
DH suddenly realised that I was planning to give the new cleaner a key so she could come in for the twice when we are away. He was not happy with that at all. He went into a sulk. I then explained that we have to pay her whether she comes in or not. Shock, horror! We trusted our previous cleaner with the key, but he is not comfortable with the new one, despite excellent references. I said I was perfectly happy with her not coming, but our contract with the cleaning firm says we have to pay her. Plus I think that is only right and proper. He disagreed.
Hence the drink.
Oh well, he will get over it. Personally I am happier with her not coming in, but I do think she should be paid. Perhaps she could come and water the garden.

Hello, I've been lurking and would like to join in the thread... I'm 53, I'm 5'2 and 269 lbs. I have been a yo-yo dieter for at least 30 years. After my last couple of yo-yos where I lost 70-80 lbs doing a low carb (<50g/days) diet, I'm trying to develop a way of eating that is healthy and I can maintain for the rest of my life.
I've been working with a trainer 2xs week doing strength training and I do one day of strength training on my own.
My doctor recently diagnosed me as pre-diabetic so I have to do something to get the weight down.
Right now I've set a goal of 240 lbs (10%) by the end of February 2018. I don't get much support at home so I hope posting here will help.
Looking forward to engaging in the conversation...18
