I limit my diet pops a lot, on occasion I may have one but that is where it stops at one. I dont keep any in the house and if I do go get one its just one serving not a case or 2 liter.
If your goal is weight loss limit your liquid calories which also includes juice! Most Juice is just pop without the fizz. If you want orange juice, eat an orange is what I always say.
Hope this helps, and dont forget its not off limits forever, just limit yourself. Maybe if you a great week Mon-Friday and on saturday you want a mochachochalala coffee drink, get one but have limits and make it a rare treat.
And why is Diet Coke unhealthy?
People on MFP won't believe that anything they enjoy is unhealthy.
I believe in concept about context and dose. I was curious how some of the vocal "context and dose" people eat so I looked at open diaries. Unfortunately I found some individuals getting 1/3+ of their calories (on a fairly low calorie diet) from high calorie/nutrient poor foods and alcohol, with barely a serving of a fruit or veggie to be seen.
IMO, not a good example of context and dose.10 -
Come join the fruit and veggie challenge if you think we eat so poorly.8

I cut back a lot and may have 3-4 Coke Zeros per week as a treat, such as after a long hike (assuming proper hydration with water and electrolytes during).0

Out of curiosity, how many diaries did you look at and how many would you say fit what you've described? Also, did you just look at one day's worth of entries or several?
I'm asking because six days out of seven, I've got a LOT of fruits and veggies in my diet. Even when I've logged a recipe like "couscous pilaf," I can state that the recipe includes craisins, dried apricots, green peas, onion, and almonds. But if you were to look at my Saturday eating, that's where you'll find that I have potato kugel and a cookie for breakfast (with some melon). The only veggies I'm likely to have at lunch are a small portion of pickled beets. Everything else is bread, hummus, various other dips and spread, a bean-barley-and-potato stew and a lower-calorie dessert. Supper is sliced cheese on a bagel. So, if someone were to hypothetically look at one page of my diary and that page happened to be Saturday's entries, it would paint a far different picture than, say, Monday.
I'm probably not alone in this.
Also, the way I ate when I was at the beginning of my 'journey' is a bit different from the way I eat now. (Has to be. As my calories got further reduced, I started making better choices. I'm thinking that people eating as you describe on 1200(F)/1500(M) calories per day will either figure out what's more satiating quickly, up their calories, or give up.) Did the diaries you looked at belong to relative newbies, or people who've been here for awhile?7 -

fundamental flaw in this.
Did anybody who said context and dosage matter then go on to say their diary was a perfect example of a perfectly balanced diet?
People's diaries are honest records of what they eat, used in a way that works for them. They are not 'showcase models'
They may not even record some things - I dont bother tracking water intake and often not diet sodas or lettuce and such either - because virtually nil calorie.
And anyway, the messenger doesnt change the message - if I am morbidly obese and make a generic statement like 'exercise burns calories' the fact that I am obese or do no excercise myself does not invalidate the message.

I am not one of the people referenced in the post (my diary is only open to friends), but I am similar in that someone looking at my diary wouldn't have a clear idea of how many fruits and vegetables I eat because most of them are included in recipes I've created myself. And, like you, they have names that often don't indicate how many vegetables they have in them.0 -
I choose not to indulge in either very much but I won't give it up completely, same as alcohol. I see these things as indulgences to have every now and then but not everyday, but that's just my opinion.
Some people have it all the time and feel fine and usually are pretty healthy, but it doesn't have the same reaction for me. If I drink too much of any of those things, I gain weight because it makes me crave a lot of...you guessed it...sugar...the bad refined kind.
Such is life.

didn't read all 8 pages, but if we're voting then i'd keep the coffee. because coffee, duh. it's an important food group that tastes great.
and incidentally because i've had more than one dentist warn me that 'diet' or not, the carbonation in any fizzy drink is not good for your teeth.4 -
I just gave up the diet coke coz it made me really bloated with the gas.

They are still researching the effects of aspartame on our bodies, but one concern is it can lead to insulin resistance and weight gain.
Honestly, I feel better drinking water or black tea over any soda. Even if diet soda isn’t harmful it certainly wouldn’t qualify as healthy. At least coffee has antioxidants.

Cate, i think research has been done over and over and not shown conclusively to do any of those things.
In my personal experience it certainly didnt cause weight gain and my last blood tests were within normal fasting glucose range so no evidence of causing insulin resistance either.
I dont think anyone is arguing that it is healthy - as in provides nutritous benifits - but that is ok. Sometimes i just consume foods/drinks because I enjoy them, and as part of an overall balanced diet that is fine.
I dont eat chocolate because it is healthy either (yes I know some arguements can be made for health benifits, but that isnt my purpose in consuming it)
Of course not if the product is actually harmful - but something can be 'not healthy' without being harmful

It can not physically lead to weight gain. And if it promoted insulin resistance it wouldn't be recommended to diabetics.
Anything that isn't a blog post on your end?
Seriously, Harvard is such a renowned University, but every single time I have seen something that says "Harvard said x", it's complete humbug.9 -

That is not a concern.
Aspartame has been well studied over the past forty years and we know exactly how it is broken down in the body. There is zero risk of it causing insulin resistance or weight gain.

No offense, but I take medical advice from my physician, not some stranger on the internet. And perhaps you’re correct and I should find a new MD, but that doesn’t make Diet Coke or any soda healthy. I stand by my opinion that black coffee is the better option.
