Hater of what? Nonsense? Unscientific based info? Companies pitching any and all diets to make a profit? if you mean any of those I agree...if you don't then I'm not sure I would agree that they are haters....
I'll need some clarification on what you mean here.
There is actually a lot of science to back up choosing a low carb lifestyle. Especially considering the OP stated that there is a large amount of diabetes in her family. She would probably benefit tremendously from low carb.and sugar is sugar..at the molecular level it is all the same.
Can you please tell my pancreas that? It doesn't seem to understand the concept..
You must have a medical condition!
And the OP said she's trying to avoid a medical condition that's prevalent in her family history; yet, there are still people posting opposition to her want to eat a low carb diet, unprocessed diet.
Whether I have a medical condition or not doesn't matter. The body responds differently to different forms of sugar. To your body they are not the same.
Personally, I don't care what "diet" a person uses... but this whole paleo-clean eating- demonize anything from a grocery story type terminology needs to stop... it's annoying and hyperbolic.
Meh, if they want to eat that way..that's fine. No one is forcing all of the world to follow in their footsteps. People will believe in what they want. It's not productive to get worked up over the word "real" and hijack the thread of someone who was looking for like minded friends.
I'm not religious so I stay away from churches.
The main point here is to not demonize food... there is no good food or bad food... it's just food... is there some food that is nutritionally better for you, sure... Processed foods are anything that is prepared... so technically, homemade chicken noodle soup made with organic, "clean", whatever descriptor of ingredients you want here is processed... putting food into catagories of "good" and "bad" does nothing but create a superiority complex of dieters and the people that hock them... I really really don't give a flying flip whether someone is vegan, paleo, IIFYM, Low fat, low carb, conventional, whatever... You do what's best for your body... Again, it's how the descriptors are used that ticks me off because you (in a general sense here) are using a broad brush to narrowly paint something just so you (again in general) can feel morally superior in your dietary choices. It's one thing to say "I don't eat pre-packaged food" or "meats raised conventionally"... but when we get into the "I don't eat processed foods" will that's ignorance talking, because like I said, virtually every food that lands on our table is some how processed... even if you are a raw vegan and just wash your food.
I don't think anyone is demonizing food. I also think that there is good and bad food. But, that's just how it is for some people. Some food is worse than other food.
I'm pretty sure someone can feel just as morally superior proclaiming they don't eat prepackaged food as someone saying they don't eat processed food. It's just words. Semantics, really.
I felt the OP's initial post was meant to be friendly. She was in search of like minded people. Then the ones who love to jump in at the sight of the awful phrase 'real food' came in and turned this into a debate. I hope she has better luck in the low carb board.
Maybe because using the term "real food" implies that others eat "fake food"... and is in my opinion creating the false dicotomy between foods. Again, in my opinion it's annoying.
I'm sorry. But I still don't see how someone's personal choice of foods and personal food philosophy, which obviously wasn't meant as an attack on anyone else, casts moral dispersions on other people. It's not like the OP posted "Everybody who eats processed foods are doody-heads!" That isn't what happened. This is what happened:Looking for open-minded, thoughtful mfp friends who are on a weight loss journey that focuses on mainly eating real, unprocessed, low(er) carb foods... no added sugars or grains! I'm not ketogenic, but I might be on certain days here and there.
And of course, realistically, we all cheat at times.
Doesn't look like a call to arms to me. There are so many annoying people or stupid crap on here, I would exhaust myself trying to set them all straight. Why bother? People don't post that stuff on this forum to annoy ME. This really doesn't seem like that important a battle to me. She wants to eat unprocessed foods, and find others like her who have that focus. What's the harm? She's not hurting anyone else or attacking anyone else's choices. Different strokes.
I wouldn't say it's a call to arms. It's just perpetuating a myth that "clean eating" is the way to lose weight. Besides that, it muddies up the actual process of weight loss by inserting terms like "real food" and "unprocessed."
By that logic so would "low-carb", "IIFYM" and IF. It's all muddy up in here. But it's still navigable. We can still see where we are going. So if you would rather wade through the mud to reach calorie deficit, why not? She's not single-handedly championing the movement. She just wanted some like-minded friends. This isn't the first clean eating thread, it won't be the last. I'm just saying save it for the "Everyone MUST EAT CLEAN or they are silly-heads!" posts. But whatever.0 -
All I know now is that I'm hungry and would like some chips and ice cream... or maybe a Whataburger...0

OMG does that not look amazing? I bet that's been processed.

FWIW, I agree that those terms are pretty muddy as well. The difference is that IF and IIFYM are based around a calorie deficit. I rarely see clean eating threads, infographics, memes, fitspo, etc., where clean eating is mentioned in relation to a calorie deficit.0 -

Again, it's how the descriptors are used that ticks me off because you (in a general sense here) are using a broad brush to narrowly paint something just so you (again in general) can feel morally superior in your dietary choices.
I think I just discovered the issue people seem to have with food labels.
I'd say relax. Yes there are some people that may feel superior in whatever choice they're making. I usually ignore these people. And TBH, this OP didn't strike me as that type. I try to eat simply and avoid grains, etc. However, I definitely don't feel superior. And to be honest, I don't really care what you eat. If you ask for my advice though, I will share what works for me.
In the end, who cares? If someone feels superior because of their food choices, of all things, let them. It certainly doesn't hurt my feelings any. Hey, I drink way more than I should. Don't really care if someone wants to get on their anti-alcohol high horse either. Well, occasionally I get huffy about it, but that's usually because I'm having my own issues and feeling defensive.
In fact...off to happy hour! :drinker:0 -

That is a reasonable ethical decision. I hope you can continue to follow it.
Unfortunately with all my other obligations is is not feasible in either money or time.

Because for every one time that a person will say they lost XX number of pounds strictly clean eating, there are five people listening thinking that's the only way to do it. Those same people are the ones that think they've failed once they "cave in" and have a candy bar or choose to eat some chips for a snack.
This is why I speak out about it. I used to be that person that was strictly cutting out candy, bread, chips, and tortillas--all the things I love. I lost weight; I was miserable; and I felt extremely guilty every time I gave in to a craving because I felt that I failed.0 -

Not me, I'm totally arrogant.
In fact, I've been considering having some business cards made up at vistaprint that just say "http://www.reddit.com/r/keto - check it out, it might save your life." and hand it out to all the morbidly obese people I see shoveling carbs into their pieholes around town.
If I can save even ONE pancreas, it will have been worth it.

OP: by now you've figured out that the main boards can be a bit of a minefield. Folks feel very strongly about some of this stuff. Even when it's not about them. Through the posts hopefully, you've also seen a few posters who might be good "pals" for you, if you decide to stay. cheers.0

Wow, I stepped away from the thread to a couple days, and it blew up! LOL
This has taught me a lot about how triggering, controversial, and divisive some concepts can be for people.
I'm glad for all the friends I got through the publicity
Despite the "minefield," overall MFP has been hugely helpful for me so far. I've lost 5 lbs since I started, so something is going right!
Also, I haven't had to feel hungry, which is essential for me because I love to eat. My food budget is way down, as processed and restaurant food is honestly more expensive. That kind of food is no longer a "treat" for me. It is more of a treat to know I am nourishing myself with wholesome, REAL food--I feel like I eat like a king! My kids are eating healthier due to my diet changes. All around lots of good things.
I wish the best for everyone.0 -
