Thanks, Sylvia for the ticker info! 75142811.png

Hi everyone! I tried to post last night and in the middle of it my computer did a backup and restarted! LOL! I figured at that point it was lost cause.

Welcome to all of the new ladies. It is so good to read your stories as well as those of so may who have lost weight and are keeping it off.

Barbie - I have a friend that, like you, can eat the same thing day after day. Oh how I wish that I could. I simply can't make myself do it. I surely do admire that quality though.

DrKatie - I must have missed the app that you wrote about. Could you please repost for me and those who are new? I would love to try it. I'd love to read something inspirational each day.

I see several of you have posted about not sleeping well lately. Well, today must have been my day! Last night I went to sleep about 10:30 pm and woke up at 1:45 a.m. I couldn't get back to sleep so I got up at 3:00 a.m. and started doing some housework. I went to work, then to the doctor, and then ran a few errands and came home. I am getting ready for bed because I have to be at work in the morning for 4:00 a.m. We are installing an upgrade and I have to round and make sure all is well. After I get off from work, I have physical therapy, and then tomorrow evening I will bring my grandchildren to the Burn Center Christmas party so they can donate the gifts that we bought. I'm looking forward to it but right this minute it seems like a very long day again! (Ok, pity party over! It's all good!)

I love all the Christmas trees with the trains and all of the wonderful stuff you are all posting. Wishing you all a very restful night and a great day tomorrow!

Hugs and prayers for all who are having health and family problems. Congratulations to all those who are experiencing success and good luck to all of us who aren't quite ready for Christmas!

smiley-cool05.gif Terri, great job balancing being up and being down

smiley-chores002.gif Diana, congrats to you for going out on your walk..you have weather that is even more challenging than mine

smiley-chores002.gif Toni, I found out that going to the gym doesn't work for me but getting into my warm clothes and walking out the door works great so I don't have a gym membership. I no longer meet my friends for a meal....we take a walk instead.

smiley-chores002.gifWelcome to everyone who is new....please keep coming back and join the conversation. I started here five years ago not believing it would work for me, but I lost the weight and stay part of the group to keep me focused. I keep my morning dog walking clothes in a special drawer, go to bed early, and get up early and get dressed immediately and take the dogs out. I log my food and exercise every day and look for opportunities to be active and learn new things about health.

smiley-cool05.gif Heather I was on the phone with a health insurance inquiry and kept on hold for ten minutes listening to Christmas music.

 Sylvia, what great choices you made for dealing with your hubby's x-mas party---there is always a way if you want something enough

:grinning: Barb, I am very grateful for having been able to give up eating for recreation and entertainment....it has improved the quality of my life

 Today I was able to take care of a long list of paperwork and phone call chores from my list along with walking the dogs, going to the intermediate line dance class, and riding the exercise bike.

smiley-sad010.gif Carol, cookies are not allowed in my house.

 Heidi, I love knitting but since I made weight loss, health, and fitness my top priority, I don't sit much and consequently don't do much knitting

Sylvia, my daughter is majoring in Psychology. She wants to be a counselor. And the grandkids are great but wow they wear us out!! We need an extra day off after we have them for the weekend.

Just got back from exercise class. We did some Shawn T DVD workouts. Fast paced and a great workout!

Drkatie - thanks for the info about the app and book. I am going to get them. My faith plays a big part in this journey. It sounds like the app would be so good for me. Are you the one who has also read "Made to Crave"? I am planning on rereading it in Jan.
    Toni in Tennessee

You really don't need the book that is the same as the app. There is no difference. The Bible Study book, Taste of Truth, would be helpful.

I have indeed read Made to Crave, but I don't know if I've talked about it on here. It is not a bad book at all, but for me, I really like this one better. It is all about the mind set and not about the diet. The "diet" in Made to Crave is too restrictive for me and the book made me feel guilty rather than uplifting me. Another one I am working through is called The Weight of Grace. I don't know how I feel about it yet. It is pretty intense and makes you dig way down in your feelings, something I'm not that good at doing.

For me, personally, I Deserve a Donut and Taste of Truth have given me the greatest sense of peace about my struggles with weight and food and contain the most common sense and work the best in conjunction with MFP, which I dearly love. When I work the plan I lose weight and when I don't, I gain. Setting my boundary as the MFP totals is perfect for me.

Remind me of this in six weeks. We will see what kind of success I am having!

Send me a friend request if you'd like. We can do the study together!

Margaret, oh yes, I know how to copy and paste. Hadn't tried doing that to a ticker. I had trouble remembering which keys to hit, because Control V made no sense, then I started thinking of it as Control C = copy and Control V = very sticky ( paste).

LisaC195, our three grandkids slept over two nights during a small emergency and I thought I would die! They needed my attention EVERY SECOND! I never worked so hard in my life! When they went home I collapsed and took it easy for a couple of days to recover. I had new sympathy for my poor son raising them alone. My son has a lung disease that means he's permanently disabled, so he's home with them all the time. He found he has become addicted to elementary school. That's the only time he gets any rest.

I'm going to bed early. Good night all!

    Oops, didn't work that time.

This is exactly why the ticker will have to wait until MFP makes it easy again. I am still unable to post from my computer using Chrome. It drives me crazy. I much prefer typing on the computer to typing on this iPad keyboard. Maybe one day!

It is called I Deserve a Donut (and other lies that make me eat). I could not find it in the App Store but googled "I deserve a donut" and clicked on a link from the author's website. It cocts $2.99. I also bought the companion Bible Study called Taste of Truth. It is really helping me. I even told DH he could start buying candy again. I honestly think I,can leave it alone. I feel that strong.

The author talks about how we follow other boundaries in our lives with no problem, so why do we rebel against food boundaries. For some reason this was eye-opening to me. I would never dream of cheating on my husband. Couldn't even be tempted to spend more on my credit card than I could pay off in a month. How is this different? I know I feel better when I leave the sugar alone. So why don't I do it? Why did I need a book to tell me this? I don't know!!! Maybe remaining faithful to a healthy eating plan isn't quite as important as remaining faithful to my husband. On the other hand, maybe if is. Am I crazy?

This is something I've thought about but hadn't been able to put it in words. Thank you for sharing this. :D Overeating and eating for recreation are considered OK behaviour in our culture and overspending and being unfaithful to one's spouse are not. People say "you deserve that cheesecake--it looks so good" but they never say, "you deserve a fling with that cute guy in your class or you deserve that beautiful sports car"smiley-laughing004.gif

Did an hour on the rebounder today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jari Love's Extremely Ripped 1000 DVD.

Beth - your experience with the cookies sounds like mine. Previously, I seemed to really want the raw cookie dough. This year, just a little taste and I didn't want any more. Yea, what's up with that? I tasted one cookie and that was enough. The other day I had one that was in the freezer and had absolutely no desire for another one. I'm amazing myself.

Had that gingerbread cookie at Rummikub last night. I kept looking at the cookie she gave me, but put it in the freezer for the soup kitchen. Then, had some of my cocoa/tofu mixture and that satisfied me completely. What's going on with me?

Joyce - one of the colleges around here does the same thing with their cooking department. About once/month the cooking dept makes a dinner with a "theme", they learn things like serving etc. They do all the cooking (and it's good), the price isn't bad at all

Went to lunch after the general meeting with the Newcomers. To be honest, I was disappointed. But I know it was my own fault. I was so looking forward to their grilled watermelon and feta salad that I had there once before. This time they didn't have it on the menu! So I had a house salad consisting of greens, tomatoes, carrots, some sort of beet. I'm guessing the calories were probably about the same as the calories in the watermelon salad, so I'm not going to bother to change my menu

After lunch decorated the tree then went to Sam's to get some shrimp for Sunday when we're having an open house for a few people. One gal who I invited said that she was coming only I didn't invite everyone who was at the lunch. And it's really too late to start inviting people now.

Penny - welcome! What part of NC are you from?

Carol - the soup kitchen is going to be getting A LOT of donations from me (of things that I don't want in the house)

Diana - WTG kicking that inner child of yours in the butt. You go girl!

kickinmom - about bookmarking this site -- don't do what I do at the end of the month. At the end of the month barbie starts a new thread so I need to bookmark the new thread and take the bookmark off the old one.

Julie - welcome! Isn't it amazing how fast the weight comes on and how SLLLOOOOWWW it comes off. Didn't used to be that slow back when I was in my 20's. Ah, the joys of getting older

Heidi - welcome! Where in FL are you?

Vicki - you're not the only one who is so far behind getting things done for Christmas. I've sworn that next year as soon as we take down the Halloween decorations, I want to start putting out the Christmas decorations, at least the extension cords. At least you have most of your shopping done. What a wonderful thing you are doing with your grandchildren having them make and then pass out cookies

Why oh why did I do this to myself? While I was decorating the tree, I had a chocolate chip cookie. What I should have done was taken Alison's advice and had some of the greek yogurt cream cheese on graham crackers. But I didn't, and I felt so bad afterwards.

Lisa - what kind of exercise are you doing?

Sylvia - how great that you walked to you car!

Beth - good for you losing another pound. And it's so hard to do it at this time of year, too.

Lesley - I do hope your daughter wants to be friends. She would miss so much if she weren't

WOW, I wait all day to read my forum and I don't know how many new ladies are here!!! Welcome. Sylvia, thanks for for the tip about the ticker. Do I have to do it everytime I post??????

Michelle, this culinary class that catered our party last night were high school kids! And it was fantastic. I am so glad that our local school board recognized that not all high schoolers follow a college bound lane.

We had our final Cantata practice tonight. She told us last week that we would try standing for the whole cantata tonihgt so just be prepared. I guess enough people talked to her about it, or maybe just the pastor did since we have so many older people in the choir. So we sat down twice. But they weren't evenly timed. I have one of those 'forever comfy' seat cushions that have a gel pad between 2 foam pads and then a nice cover. So I am taking that with me Sunday. I stopped by CVS on the way home and got me a small lumbar cushion. It is quite nice. It's small, compact and only cost $10. I will also take that.

Today is Michelle's birthday. She is 35. I'm sure her life is not where she wanted it to be. No one gets married with the intent that they are going to divorce 8 years later. But she is happy. She said ehr boss came up to her and said that he had heard it was her birthday and she said no that it was her Mom's labor day!!!

Christmas Veggie Tree: I have always stuck my toothpicks into raw veggies, the stem parts of the cauliflower and broc. filler with carrots, cherry toms, cucumbers & pearl onions. For the garland; I would thinly slice the peppers into rounds ( aka clovers ;) ) then cut the clovers in have and tuck the ends in between the harder veggies. :)

Christmas Fruit Tree: Strawberries, grapes, kiwi, & cantaloupe are all very soft fruits. Your toothpicks dont have to be shoved half way thru a fruit to hold them in place. The hardet part is sticking them into the carrot and apple. Which is why i do that first, then stick my filler fruits on.

Regarding toothpicks for the Fruit tree; i have never had a problem, the toothpicks always stayed put in the apple and carrot. But if your concerned, they have those adorable lil plastic party picks, or you could use the ones with cellophane ribboned ends and have them showing on the outside of your fruit ( instead of hiding the picks ) Think... Chrristmas lights ;)

Sorry ladies , I have no idea where my wednesday went and I am dashing out the door to physio therapy. Oh before I forget... Yes, I am originally from the Great Lakes State, Michigan!! So in all actuality I am a broad abroad. HaH... did i make mention earlier on how funny I think I am?? ;) lol

Congrats to those whove earned it... hugz to those who need it. :)

    Good morning everyone!

Dr. Katiebug: I see you are using an iPad. I solved the ticker problem by having a simple document in TextEdit (or you could use Word); I have the code for the ticker at the bottom. I type that day’s remarks in between the greeting and sign-off, and copy-past into MFP. I even have that document in Dropbox, so I can use it on my laptop, iPad or desk computer without much bother. It’s my version of (I hope I remember correctly) Katla’s idea. And I hear you about typing on the iPad; it takes getting used to. I have no idea why Chrome wouldn’t work; have you checked the forum for ideas? I don’t use Chrome (I try to stay away from Google where possible), so I’m sorry I don’t have an idea on that.

Michele: congrats on the cookie dough NSV. I’m not there yet, haha.

I got a genealogy book I’ve been waiting for in the mail yesterday. It took forever, because the publisher would not ship to my location (grr; do you want to make sales or what?? Hello; it's 2014!), so I had to have it sent to my mom and ask her to send it to me. Mom was ill (I didn’t want to burden her with this in the first place), so it took a long time. Very interesting book. But I’m (still) kind of worried about Mom. This is the first time I’ve seen her handwriting look a bit shaky.

Fun day yesterday with my guy; we went out for lunch and went to a couple of stores. He doesn’t share my childish excitement about office supply stores and some other stores, but he’s so sweet that he just enjoys spending time with me and even helps me look for stuff, gives ideas when he has them, etc. It was nice weather and we had a good time.

Working today. There should be some concrete job information soon. What’s definite is that my university job will end; either I have to do the same work at a private company (waiting to hear more about that), or try to get another job at the university (and there really are almost no jobs). The whole thing has been dragging on for about 9-10 months and I’m really tired of the uncertainty, the secrecy and the background stress.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Peaceful thoughts coming your way Alison! :flowerforyou:

Now I have to ask - what is going on with this cookie thing in the US? It seems to be a nightmare! We have our traditions, like Christmas cake and mince pies, which is bad enough, (everywhere you go they try to foist mince pies and mulled wine onto you :ohwell: I don't have the pies  ), but this obligatory cookie baking and swapping seems to be a thoroughly exhausting, not to say fattening thing. Can't someone start a campaign on Facebook to stop the madness! It seems like the force feeding of America! ! ! !
    - I wouldn't mention it as we too in the UK overindulge at Christmas and buy far too much food and too many useless presents, but so many of you are unhappy with the tradition and it causes you problems. I can understand how it originated in days when everyday food was scarce and plain, but nowdays? Perhaps someone could explain the madness to me. ? Almost every post has someone mentioning the Trouble With Cookies!

Hope I haven't offended anyone. :embarassed:

Food prep today for tomorrow's dinner party. Hope DH can track down some eggplant. (aubergine).
I also have to finish sorting the drawers, (did one last night) and make the bed in our new bedroom.
I'm keeping our own food really simple at the moment as I don't feel like cooking when I've been doing it all day, so it's smoky, lemony salmon fillets and roasted butternut squash. I will get DH to prep the squash. Also broccoli.

I haven't weighed this week, but I have been keeping to calories so I might see a small loss tomorrow. Yeah!
I did my ticker by pressing on the code they give you and a top bar comes up with copy etc. Then I press on the cursor on my post and the choose paste from the same bar which pops up. As long as I don't copy anything else I just do the pressing and pasting on my post each time, don't have to copy each time. I am on Android with Chrome.

Love to all. Heather in warmer Hampshire UK

Heather: the Cookies are a pain in the behind on the one hand; on the other hand they're cute and the cool thing is that families often have their own traditional cookies. We weren't really a cookie-exchange family, but my aunt always made her nut "horns" (loved them!) and a couple of other kinds.

    Good Morning,

Deedee Noel is darling. Thank you to all who share their puppies. We do not have a dog, so I love to see all of yours.

It looked like Dr. Zhivago land here yesterday. (A no calorie treat) Unfortunately I did not get a picture because I was on my way to work.

Heather... I had to laugh out loud ... it is cookie madness!! :D But we would be devastated if there were no cookies at Christmas. I used to be involved in exchanges and giving cookies as gifts, but now just bake when I have to take something. And there are a few that I make for my boys that I only make at Christmas.

Alison, Barb and the rest with busy days ... please pace yourselves...

Weather is cold, snowy and nasty today. Besides going to work, I will not do anything outside.

Migraine son is still home ... IV infusion late yesterday not helping ...

    Another day ...

:D DeeDee, Noel is darling, as usual, in her holiday dress.

:D Heather, I am reading a great book now that begins with the premise "Something has to change, and it's probably me"......the only way someone can get out of any madness (cookie baking, rescuing family members, attending unwanted events or whatever) is to be the one to change. I gave away all my baking equipment and supplies five years ago and decided that I would have to be famous in my world for something else.

smiley-chores002.gif Now I'm off to walk the precious poodles.

I have a supplementary question. Who eats all the cookies? Is it like the jar of bath salts that nobody ever uses and they just get passed around? I can hardly ever get anyone I know to eat a cake or a biscuit. They all say "I'm on a diet", "I'm gluten free", "I'm diabetic" or just, "I'd love to but I shouldn't". My DH is almost the only one who accepts a cake graciously. I could never give cookies as a present as I don't know anyone who would be grateful.

Hello wise women! I an new and appreciate being able to feed off the positive and motivational posts. I have been on fitpal for 3 months and it has been just the thing I need to help me keep going.

I am 58 and have finally grabbed control of my life and lost 30 lbs since Sept 1 of this year. I had to, I was so unhealthy and just sinking into a bad place in my head too. The fitpal app was recommended, plus a really swift kick in my own butt and a new mantra put me on this path. As a parent and grandparent, wife and working person, I reminded myself that I can do tough things, so off I went :)

Anyways, I love the idea of the resolutions ... so I would like to jump into December. A challenging month given all the temptations ahead.

    1) Maintain healthy eating patterns of small portions, no processed foods
    2) Exercise 30 minutes at least 3 times a week
    3) Finish my first quilted square
    4) Stop myself when I start to whine and complain at work - be constructive

I will look forward to evaluating this in January!

Thanx for being out there, folks!
