Getting into a calorie surplus can be hard for some

Mmmmmmmm Brazilian steakhouse. I only have 2 issues with those places.
1. I'm always waiting around for the Skirt steak to come around whole everyone else isn't as patient and they enjoy anything available.
2. I always leave so full that my stomach hurts.
1. Tell your waiter up front what you want showing up at your table frequently. They can make that happen.
2. Sounds like you're doing it right.0 -

1. Yeah I suppose that is a good idea. I just thought asking that at an all you can eat makes me look like a glutton. But you're right.
2. Awesome.
yes and yes.
BF and I went once- and nothing was coming to the table... and the hostest came by and said- our staff said you only wanted picana and turkey wrapped in bacon.
And we were like- well - no - we didn't say that (we actually hadn't talked to anyone) they just remembered us- that by the end of the night- we ONLY eat those two things typically.
I'll eat the other stuff- i'm there- and it's stuff I don't eat regularly- but the pichana and the turkey wrapped in bacon.
win.
and yes- I only wear stretchy pants. and I practically have to be rolled out of there.
I still say let's do it.

It would be for people that actually bulk, try and learn the concepts and don't think their gym calls dumbbells something other than dumbbells. Head on back to the main forum and keep agreeing with posts that are wrong.

I don't know man. Maybe we can show him how it's done. Maybe seeing the things we (OK, mostly you guys) have told him in action will get through.

We already agreed to help you. There is 15 pages of help we agreed to simply by continuing to show up.
Okay- to be fair- it's probably only 10 pages of help- we've wandered in and out of that path.
But yeah. There you go. You have the tolls- you currently just lack. I don't know- motivation to go do it. That or your scared you'll fail? or do it wrong.
guess what buddy- everyone fails.
everyone does something wrong- nothing we do is permanent in terms of programming and food choices- you can always hop off the train any time you want. The train is slow. and steady. But requires comittment.0 -

You feel free to waste your time with you. I'm not baby-ing anyone. We are adults here and it's time to start acting like one.

Boo. I'm not bulking and won't be lean enough to bulk for a very long time. And Texas isn't near anything...
Also, OP. I found my own way in the gym with the help Of a beginning program and instructional videos on youtube. It was super intimidating, and I hate spending money. But I realized I have goals, and I would need to suck it up and get it done. The only thing preventing me from being awesome is myself. At some point you have to realize that excuses are what is holding you back.
You say you have access to a gym, but it's across town and you have inferior equipment at home. You have several options. You can eat at a sufficient surplus and use your equipment with a well designed program and make gains, although they may not be optimal. You could leave your machine to your family members and drive across town where you know that at least have a complete dumbbell set. Or you could scope out a closer gym with a wide range of equipment and decide the extra expense is worth it.
Or, you could choose to talk and analyse forever and do nothing. You will have to decide for yourself what is worth it and if you actually care about reaching your goals.0 -

Never been to a Brazilian steakhouse before, but I love the concept. All you can eat quality meats? Hell yes. We just had one open up here in Norfolk called Texas de Brazil. It's supposed to be fantastic, and I think they will give you 50% off your first time there. Worth considering IMO.0

I would highly recommend you get down and try it out. They are truely an experience!0 -
Texas de Brazil is awesome! Surprised one made it to norfolk. I'm headed up there this summer (Virginia beach), but when I'm there I want local stuff I can't get in texas. And veterans brewing. Because I found out about their Kickstart in the beer group on here.0

Perhaps if we are serious about this, we ought to make our own thread or group?0

It isn't that we don't want you in the discussion - it's just frustrating that you have been asking for advice, and even though some really knowledgable people have responded you don't end up putting it into practice.
Eat big and lift big, focusing not on machines but on free weights. That's the takeaway message of this thread.0 -
OK, so this is a long post, but some real changes may be coming next week. Today has been a somewhat revealing day. Based on a 1 rep max test with my weight machine, I have concluded that I really have not added more than a few pounds (if that) to my max bench press in the last 20 workouts I've done.
I was discussing some things over with some of my family members. I'm not kidding; they were almost shocked when I told them what I was bench pressing on the machine and the fact that I can overhead press with the two 20 pound dumbbells for up to 18 reps. They said I really can't complain about my strength given how small my arms and the rest of my upper body is. I guess they do have a point. If it really is true that the 40 reps of floor presses I can do with the dumbbells is about equivalent to a 1 rep max of about 105-110 pounds with a barbell, it does put me right in line with the kind of strength I should have based on my experience this website.
At this point, I do plan to go to my college gym one day next week and see if I can even use the equipment (since I am no longer a current student there). Although it was something that I knew was an issue for a long while, the weight increments on my machine is a chief factor in why I'm now doubting the amount of additional progress I can make. After rerunning through some calculations, I believe bench pressing on the machine with 6 plates may be about equivalent to 75-80 pounds with a barbell, and 7 plates may be about 100-105 pounds. This seems reasonable given that the weight resistant chart (assuming I have the right manual) shows a 27 pound difference in weight resistance between the 6 and 7 plates, even though each plate only weighs 10 pounds. So the fact that I can do 8-12 reps at 6 plates but not even 1 rep at 7 plates says something.
Now, assuming I can still use the college gym, I don't know that I would necessarily jump right into a pre-made program. For one thing, that would be somewhat dependent on the overall extent of their equipment. There are certain exercises that I want to do, and I'm also not sure how many days each week I'd want to commit. Also, given the likelihood of muscle imbalances I want to make sure I don't do too much of certain exercises that would make it worse.
I also don't have much of a plan yet in terms of what I'm going to do with my calorie intake, as I don't know how much more (if any) newbie gains I can get. It is true that strength is definitely the primary factor with why I am deciding to do things a little differently now.0 -

Jason, don't tell us just do it and report back then we can take it from there once you've shown some action. Good luck.0 -

Don't bother trying to calculate machine to barbell. With a static track and no stablizer muscles there is really no comparison. I used a Smith machine for months before changing gyms and even adjusting for counter/weight bar... no comparison. Thats not to say my strength on the major muscles hadn't gone up... but it felt totally different. I would have honestly been better off doing bodyweight exercises (that require broader groups of muscles) than using a Smith or Cybex machines for months.0
