So it was more crowded than normal. Our gym is a club and is very family friendly and welcoming...except, it appears, the weight room. There were two other women in there and the rest guys of various ages.

I start lifting and daughter comes to hang out with me. Right next to us a loud conversation started:

Middle age man # 1 "How is your injury?"

Middle age man #2 "It is ok, they have me full of antibiotics. I was taking a (SH word for pooh) and sitting on the toilet and pulled a scab off and nearly passed out."

Me in my head (Really? You are established adults paying good money for this membership that stresses family values and a safe place and you loudly describe this when it is very clear there are four ladies within 10 feet of you?!?!?)

Needless to say daughter did not participate in lifting weights last night. I wish I could have a private conversation with those men about appropriate conversation in public areas. Daughter admitted that the conversation was part of why she didn't lift.

    Um, guys, is this true??

Not for me. I can eat back at least 3/4 of my exercise and maintain my current weight. Walking is completely accurate. Weightlifting is very close. Dance class and zumba are about 75% of what I actually burn. I don't do those at the high impact that increases calorie burn because of my bad knee. It depends on your individual metabolism.

Confession: I'm all excited because I went for a walk with my husband (I've been doing daily walks to help with the sciatica pain, on the doctor's recommendation), and downloaded a free pedometer app before we left--I got 1600 steps on that one little walk! Also, he bought an ice cream bar at the store we ended up in, and I didn't get one because I already commited in the Fitbit thread to sticking to my calories. It's a small win, but I'll take it. :)

Do you guys think the scale will be nice to me tomorrow if I regale it with tales of my fabulous will power? :D

Good job on the walk and resisting ice cream! I know you'll get the fitbit!

Honestly, I don't think I will. :( I've gained so much weight that, even if I don't mess up my calories even once from now until my birthday, it would still be unrealistic to hope for 65 kg. I currently weigh 73 kg, and that's nearly 10 kilos in two months.

How much is that in lbs?

    (Raises hand here)

One kilogram is equal to 2.204 pounds.

    8 (not 10) kilograms = 17.63 pounds.

@Susieq_1994 some of your gain must be water that will go away. You just keep doing the best you can every day and you will get there!!

So 20 lbs in 2 months? Assuming some is water weight... I think that could be do-able. Mid Oct? Late Oct for b-day? I can't remember...

Definitely doable. I lost 18 pounds my first two months on MFP. @Susieq_1994, I believe in you. Tomorrow try to walk a little further than today. Pass up the ice cream and think fitbit. You can do it!

so that's the end of that.

after a solid month of seeing each other almost every. single. day. and him making the point to "be exclusive," dude decided that "i don't think that this is working for me."

i got about three hours of sleep last night, they weren't concurrent either. so apologies for the rambles.
first he said it was because *i* wanted too much commitment, to which i kindly reminded him that *he* was the one that wanted to be exclusive, then he just said that he wasn't sure if i was the *one* for him.
i do know that a lil more than a week ago, his ex-wife from six years ago reached out to him to try and rekindle things. he initially said he wasn't interested, maybe that changed?
or he simply just panicked and fled.
    same end result.

i'd be lying if i said i wasn't devastated. and this is probably stupid of me too, but i really, honestly, thought he was the one for me. finally after all the horrors, and downright brutal treatment i endured both physically and emotionally...i thought it was actually my turn to be happy.
i'd also be lying if i said i wasn't furious with myself for allowing myself to get so involved and excited and be so foolish.
    i should know better.
    i do know better.

i think i'm just going to take a break from everything for a while.
my brain keeps flashing this lil image of a tiny hand setting a brick on a wall that's slowly being finished.

*ETA* can i also add how ridiculously embarrassed i am about all of this?

Want me to take him out for ya? I know a guy.

That sucks hard. I'm so sorry.

Ugh ugh ugh. I'm so sorry this happened! Don't feel stupid, don't feel embarrassed. Take a break, sort yourself out, but do not let this make you think that that's it for you.

I know it's hard right now, but try to find something positive to take from the relationship. I went through something similar last spring. I KNEW he was the one, he made it seem like he felt the same way and then I got a text at 2 am saying it was over - and I never found out what changed, literally over night. For me, before that last relationship, I was convinced that I was never going to be in love with someone, never going to BE loved by someone, never feel that *spark*, never open up to anyone. But that relationship showed me that it CAN happen. I'm sad things didn't work out with him, but I tell myself that it can happen again. I realized that I can open up to people, and it's a wonderful feeling.

You are an amazing person and have so much to offer. And I firmly believe that if this didn't work out, then that just means something better is on its way.

I too had someone end it, completely out of the blue, in an email. He was my first relationship after the divorce and he was a friend. It was a "we're over" and he cut all communication. I cried some every day for about a year. At first I even woke up from my sleep crying. There is more to the story than I will post here but if you need more PM me and I'll share. Bottom line is that there is something beautiful in having a heart that has the capacity to trust and to love. Take time to grieve, take time to appreciate yourself. If you want that someone special in your life then you will have it. You are amazing and we care about you and are rooting for you.

I thought I was the only person in the WORLD this happened to. I did this about a month and a half after Douche Canoe dumped me.

@KylerJaye Take the grief bacon over the dark thoughts. Take time for yourself.
What I personally ended up doing after my last bad break up was I started exercising every time I thought about him. I probably lost my first 15 pounds that way for this MFP go round.

Play a quick game with Amy Young. She's great and a LOT of her videos helped me get over Douche Canoe and realize what a Douche Canoe he really was. (Her videos also helped me realize what a great catch SSP is!)

Hi all! I was about 6 pages behind and have just caught up. I'm so glad @Susieq_1994 is feeling better! Are you still pain free today? I hope so!

I miss Laura, too and hope the trip is going splendidly!

@quiksylver296 - 9 days is a good streak! Keep it up if you feel like the alcohol is keeping you from your optimal health. I decided that I don't really want to drink my calories, so this is generally not an issue for me personally. But I applaud your effort to make a change that could improve your overall health!

    @pofoster21 How's your recovery going?

My husband decided that he'd rather do a couch-to-5K running program than start the Strong Lifts program with me at this time. Soooo.. the lifting is on hold for the moment. We are gonna try the Zombies, Run! 5K program with our first night tonight. I got a stride assessment from the local running store so that I could buy the right kind of shoes and we got shoes yesterday. I also splurged and got a HRM! I'm excited to try it out tonight. I blame @pofoster21 for her enthusiastic endorsement of running as "fun" in my current decisiong to try it out again. And, I'll be running from virtual zombies, so it can't be all bad, right?

Yay for joining the running crowd! Just take it easy, don't push it, get shin splints, think its terrible and give up. Start slow. I don't know this couch to 5K or Zombie Run programs, but just starting with a minute run, 2 minute walk, etc. and slowly build up your time/distance and then speed. Going too fast = failure!

As for recovery, my stitches seems to be a bit infected (probably from doing too much even though I have been sticking to no running/biking/riding/swimming and got help with the heavy stuff on Sunday). If they don't look better by tomorrow, I am calling the Dr. to get antibiotics. I had some issues with repeated infections on my face about a decade ago that turned out to be MRSA (or however its spelled) likely from dogs (meaning I catch it from dogs, don't pass it onto others, but can infect myself, apparently it 'lives' in the nose? And touching my nose then the acne on my face (which I have mentioned before until I realized if I stopped eating dairy I had terrible acne and picked it like crazy, so open sores, but now have ZERO acne -- tip for kids with teenagers suffering from acne)) anyway it took a while to figure out that was what it was, then a while to realize penicillin-based antibiotics don't work on me and I need sulfur based ones. So... if its not better by tomorrow, I'll call and get some antibiotics. Thanks for asking!

I just had to quote and bold this SO HARD! I want to run and become great at it like I was in high school.
I still get shin splints. It's compartment syndrome for me—a swelling of muscles within a closed compartment—which creates pressure. I do stretching and muscle massage on the anterior of my legs and it helps a LOT.

There are different kinds of shin splints and different ways to prevent it. The best way is what Pof suggested. As much as it stinks and seems stupid, start slow.

I confess, I find slight issue with the fact that my doctor can prescribe me things before really telling me what it is for.
Apparently, I have a slight bacterial infection (Bacterial Vaginosis or BV) and this antibiotic is for treating it. But does it HAVE to be so strong?

The side effects listed are smurfing awful!
Apparently, if I drink any alcohol, I will become severely and violently ill. If I do not drink enough water, I will become ill. If I over exert myself, I will become ill. If I don't take it with enough food, I will become ill. Diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, muscle pains/spasms, headaches, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain...

So in true 'good patient' fashion I called my doctor and I asked some questions. Now I am apparently on maintenance calories, and low impact exercise until we know exactly how the medication will affect me. She (my doctor) isn't worried and said I should feel free to call her with any more concerns and to use these 10 days to relax a little on my diet and recharge.

As with most/all antibiotics, my birth control is no longer effective while taking this medication so I need to use a backup....

I confess, I hate condoms.

In other news, I POOPED!!!

Ok, so everyone can ignore my earlier whiny post and be proud of me for taking off the cranky pants!

Despite being lazy and feeling bloated, I did my run- 9 miles and went for our 4ish mile walk. Now, I will go and horrify everyone at the restaurant when they see just how much pizza I can eat at their buffet! Weeeee!!!!

Um...lol that's 13 miles! Go on and eat your pizza!

    Exactly!!

Oh, trust me..I ate an obscene amount of food...definitely got more than my money's worth! One more bite and my husband would have been rolling me out of there!!!
I'll get one more walk in putting me over 20 miles for the day...but by my guesstimations on the food today, I will still be over my calories!!!
That's with a small breakfast..and no plans for dinner because there's no room in this body for anything but water at this point!!!
ETA: @kellyjellybellyjelly, I'm not sure I could choose a favorite. They're awesome there! I'm vegetarian and they asked me what pizza I wanted them to make for the buffet..because they had so many meat ones prepared!! It was so nice of them to ask...I didn't know what to say so I just told them any veggie ones.
The ones they made for little ole me included:
    plain cheese
    Portobello mushroom, spinach, & feta
    Tomato, spinach, olive, and feta
    Green peppers and onions

Out of embarrassment, I refuse to say how many slices I ate...but I also had greek salad and pasta salad!!!

Fello vegetarian here and these sound amazing! (Why does Fello look wrong. Felo? Feloo? Fellow? Ahhh its Fellow! (no squiggly line under it!).

They were!! Hence why I ate so darn much...it's the next day at 4:00am and I am honestly still not hungry! I can't wait to see how sandpapery my skin feels after my run this morning...I'd be scared to know the true amount of sodium that I had yesterday... :grimace:

And @Italian_Buju, I won't how many slices...but I ate 3 slices more than my husband!!!!

Not for everyone, and no offence to Susie, but it really irritates me the way this gets bandied about the forums as if it's Gospel. There are quite a few people who find it overestimates burn, but personally I found that when I got my HRM, a lot of the counts were actually pretty close to what MFP had given me. I've seen other people on my friends list say the same, and some even say they're a bit on the low side.

Sometimes the exercise machines that measure calorie burns are great overestimated as are the MFP exercise estimations.

This is very true. :)Usually halving the MyFitnessPal exercise calorie burn is roughly correct. Also, be kind to yourself! <3 Starving your body of the nutrition it needs will give you a lot of unpleasantness down the road. :)

    :o

    Um, guys, is this true??

Not for everyone, and no offence to Susie, but it really irritates me the way this gets bandied about the forums as if it's Gospel. There are quite a few people who find it overestimates burn, but personally I found that when I got my HRM, a lot of the counts were actually pretty close to what MFP had given me. I've seen other people on my friends list say the same, and some even say they're a bit on the low side.

I've had three different measuring instruments/apps tell me that the calories on MFP are accurate for walking.

This is an NSV! And ... if you are on steroids it might take a bit of time to get rid of that water weight, but just keep sticking within your calories and walking when you can!

I'm not on steroids, thankfully. I'm on NSAIDs, which stands for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. :) They also seem to make me bloat something crazy, though. *sigh*

I'm in a lot of pain this morning. :'( I move around way too much when I can't sleep (tossing and turning...) and aggravated my injury.

Well, I did say *almost* ten. ;) I desperately hope some of it is water. :(

So I have now tried all the Quest bars I wanted to try.

Cookie dough, chocolate peanut butter and cookies and creme are my faves. White chocolate raspberry was good too. Not a single one was gross and I never felt like I had to choke one down. This is a new staple for me.

Ha! Another convert! My mission to win over the world, one Quest bar at a time. Now if you would just LOVE the Lemon Cream Pie flavor, I would be one step closer... ;)

I'm so jealous that everyone but me get to eat Quest bars :'( Anyone want to buy me a box of them for my birthday? :D

Can I ship to Saudi Arabia? What are the dynamics of that? When is your birthday (I know Oct but what date)? You'll have to send me your address in a message. I might not send Quest bars but I might want to send a card.... ! Or something. :)

Aww, that's sweet of you!! :) If you want to do so, you can ship to my N.Y. account--they'll forward it to Saudi Arabia for me from there, and you don't have to worry about international shipping charges that way. ;)

My birthday is on the eighth of October.

I tried to take daughter to the weight room and show her it is not a scary place.... (FAIL)

    Men are so gross.
Not all men. Mr Tubbs would ask them if they thought that was an appropriate conversation to have in front of ladies. He would also give them his Oprah look. He's braver than me. I'd think of something smart and withering to say 20 minutes later.
    logqlg7c8hml.gif

LOL at the Oprah look. :p

I undereat all the time. I almost get "high" off cardio and burn 500-600 calories per cardio session. But I don't increase my calories, so my weight loss is stalling...I have to retrain my brain to go ahead and eat. Most of the time I am not hungry...I used to weigh 262, but now I weigh 180, but I still see the fat girl in my head, so I stick to about 1500 calories even if I work out and burn 1000... :'(

@stacynoell awesome job on losing 82 pounds! Not judging but trying to help so don't take this the wrong way.

Are you accurately measuring your burns by either using a heart rate monitor or a fitness tracking device like Fitbit, Jawbone, Garmin, etc.? Could you be overestimating your calorie burns?

Do you weigh your food on a digital food scale that measures in grams, ounces, & pounds? If not then you could be overestimating how much you burn & underestimating how much you're actually eating. Sometimes eyeballing & using measuring cups can be off by a great percentage. Usually when there's a stall it's from eating more than we think.

That's why I said usually. ;) It very much depends on the individual's weight, height, and even their exercise efficiency (you burn more doing something your body isn't good at). But eating too little of your exercise calories is better than eating too many, in my opinion. :p

I don't get quest bars either, unless i buy a box at £40 for 12, because they are not allowed to be sold individually here.

    *post boyfriend update*

so that's the end of that.

after a solid month of seeing each other almost every. single. day. and him making the point to "be exclusive," dude decided that "i don't think that this is working for me."

i got about three hours of sleep last night, they weren't concurrent either. so apologies for the rambles.
first he said it was because *i* wanted too much commitment, to which i kindly reminded him that *he* was the one that wanted to be exclusive, then he just said that he wasn't sure if i was the *one* for him.
i do know that a lil more than a week ago, his ex-wife from six years ago reached out to him to try and rekindle things. he initially said he wasn't interested, maybe that changed?
or he simply just panicked and fled.
    same end result.

i'd be lying if i said i wasn't devastated. and this is probably stupid of me too, but i really, honestly, thought he was the one for me. finally after all the horrors, and downright brutal treatment i endured both physically and emotionally...i thought it was actually my turn to be happy.
i'd also be lying if i said i wasn't furious with myself for allowing myself to get so involved and excited and be so foolish.
    i should know better.
    i do know better.

i think i'm just going to take a break from everything for a while.
my brain keeps flashing this lil image of a tiny hand setting a brick on a wall that's slowly being finished.

*ETA* can i also add how ridiculously embarrassed i am about all of this?

    MASSIVE HUGS
I'm so sorry this happened. If it is any consolation, better it happened after a month than a year+ down the line?
It is very easy to fall head over heels in the first month or so, I won't beat yourself up over that. I think you need to do a bit of self-soothing, do what you need to do to make yourself better, but never leave us! Talking always helps, you know where we are. <3
Also, please don't finish the wall. Blocking everything else out won't help. Yes, you block out the bad people, but you also block out the best people.

Trust your Fitbit. The rule for mfp is roughly half, but to reassess how you are losing - too quick, eat back a larger %. If you eat them all back and are losing at the rate you expect to be, that works too.

I tend to think that As you get more fit, the burns are less accurate. When I was logging exercise on here, I usually tried a couple other calculators to see how close the burn was and it was usually close.

Edit: and maybe some honey nut Cheerios?

In honour of @LBuehrle8 arriving in blighty today I have made meatloaf with roast potatoes and veg and a cherry and almond crumbleand custard, all from scratch

Sound fabulous (of course I couldn't eat the meatloaf.. but the cherry and almond crumble and custards sounds FABULOUS!)
Yes! I thought so when I read it, and forgot to mention it. I LOVE the cherry/almond combo. I have an Evans cherry tree (beautiful red, sour cherries) and I never know what to do with them all. I've already made cherry liqueur and there are still SO MANY cherries. I might make some jam/compote if I get a chance before they go bad, or before the birds get to them.

Make cheesecake and put the cherry + cherry liqueur on it. Then invite me over for some!

And me. And put ground almonds in the biscuit base,

Also, bottle some cherries with vodka. Cherry vodka and lemonade is awesome.

In waitrose, they sell a bakewell vodka. I may have a bottle in my fridge.

Oooh and also, cherry ice cream. I have a recipe for that too. (alright, its Ben and Jerry's recipe. Its still awesome.)
Whaaat? That sounds awesome! Do want!

    Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia

    Ingredients:
    ¼ cup shaved plain chocolate
¼ cup fresh bing cherries, halved and pitted (I used glace cherries, just as good)
    2 large eggs
    ¾ cup sugar
2 cups of heavy or whipping cream
    1 cup milk

    Instructions:
Places shaved chocolate flakes and cherries in separate bowls. Cover and refrigerate.
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy (1-2 mins)
Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue whisking until completely blended.
Pour in cream and milk and whisk
Transfer mixture to ice cream maker and freeze following manufacturer’s instructions

After the ice cream stiffens (about 2 mins before its done) add the chocolate and cherries and continue freezing.

Someone needs to listen to their own advice more often ;)
