What nobody tells you about losing weight

I've lost 36 pounds and still have about 20 or so to lose, but I feel amazing. I feel confident and strong. I'm excited about clothes shopping, and I recently realized after a brief hiatus from working out due to a cold, that I sleep so much better when I'm working out!9

Yep. Ive had some pretty "terrifying" dreams where I ate a handful of doritos for breakfast and blew my carb intake for the day. Wake up with a sigh of relief10 -
The realisation that when you lose weight you don't magically have $$ to buy new bras / other clothes. Yay for baggy clothes !!(until I reach my goal)13

That your success may NOT inspire any of your loved ones. Even though your success SHOWS you know how to do it, they don't even want to start on the process. Even though my husband just had to buy BIGGER shorts. It didn't click for him that he really needs to lose weight. Daughter is still in denial. Thinks a thigh gap (I have one) is gross and her thick thighs (shockingly thick but I don't tell her that. She's a teen and I don't want to completely body-shame her) are better. I dropped from 147 lbs to between 115 and 116 generally. I got back into all my size 6 clothes and then some. I put on formal dresses I could not zip before. But it has not inspired my family at all.
@GabinkaP My family comments on how good I look and how healthily I eat, as they order pizza from Dominos or whatever. For the past 6 months I've been making this effort, and nobody else has wanted to change. Just this weekend though, my parents bought fruit and cut it up and prepared it for the week, and everyone was interested in partaking. My dad tried to eat pretty clean when we went out this weekend (quietly, he didn;t say anything about it), and my mom has started going back to Weight Watchers, which I personally think is a waste of money, but if that's what she needs to do to get healthier, I'm all for it. And my brother has recently started running and has asked to join me at the 5k's I've signed up for. These are all very recent changes. So it may not seem like it, but people are noticing and it might just take a while for them to come around. But I know it's entirely possible that they just wont change at all.

No evidence that he's starting to care. He's obese and fine with it at the present. I worry that I'll lose him earlier because of this.
As for my daughter, I did have a talk with her about her weight a couple weeks ago. Trying the "It's easier to keep it off than to take it off" route. But she still put away a pound of M&M's (all but 1/4 cup) in about 2 days after she got just a little bit of money to buy it. Even trying to keep either of them to portion control has not worked yet. She still gives me the "you're the one on the diet, not me" comments.

I once dreamed I overate my calories by 6000 and was freaking out trying to count and remember what the hell I ate, then I woke up stressed but relieved.13 -

That you will be able to tell the difference between hydrated and dehydrated. I can't stand the days I don't drink enough water. It's like my body physically hurts when it doesn't get enough water.16

I dont know how old your daughter is or what all you said to her, but maybe try emphasizing just being healthy first and foremost, and then the weight will just follow? But I do feel like a lot of starting out on this journey is really just a lightswitch moment, and I'm not sure that other people can trigger that- it might just have to start with oneself.14 -

I'm beautiful and while my stomach is not perfectly flat, I'm thinner than I've been in 10 years! (Was on a diet 10 years ago and got down to 110, now 115-116). Part of the issue with her though, may be beyond her control. She had a broken ankle this summer. Seriously curtailed her activity. Now she's back in school, gonna play volleyball. Maybe all that activity will bring her weight down while she's not looking.
As for my husband, I got him a Fitbit, hoping that would get him moving more. Now he manages to get 10k far before I do even when we're walking together and as I said before, he's going up, not down.1 -
How much it sucks when you realize you're one of the one's who is in the process of regaining... and yet not being able to muster up the effort to refocus...
I am on the tail end of this. I have regained 39 pounds since May but I just got refocused this week thanks to a good friend pushing me. Actually she has to lose 18 pounds to fit her goal and actually felt bad for me when I told her how much I gained. I don't want people feeling bad for me because of my decisions so I decided it was time to get back to work.9 -
How you can't stop touching yourself! I don't mean sexually. But even though I've had hip bones and collar bones for months I still keep toying with them. The funny thing is I was skinny all my life until I hit my mid twenties and I'm sure had hip and collar bones then, probably even more prominent than they are now, but I don't remember paying any attention to them. I guess when you've always had them you just take them for granted. Now after twenty years of being over weight I have them back and I can't leave them alone. I often find myself toying with my collar bones without even realizing I'm doing it lol!29

My boyfriend has asked me to stop poking my ribs. I can't help it! They feel so weird, in a good way!

I remember from being a teenager that I didn't take my mothers advice, ever. However we had no candy, chips etc in the house and mostly ate home-cooked food.
As for your husband, sit him down, tell him you love him and you're worried about his health. Ask if he is willing to go to the doctor with you and get all his blood/cholesterol etc levels checked out. If the doctor thinks everything is fine, don't worry. Otherwise it might jolt him into action?

You really have to experience it yourself. Migrating over to your previous eating habits can make you instantly more sluggish and give you headaches. Down 30 lbs now, I attended a weekend family event where I went overboard on bread, burgers and snackage - and once I came back to work on Monday I felt like face-planting my keyboard. By Wednesday after returning to my lighter, healthier choices, I feel better. Good lesson learned.28

Yep. This. I don't let it get me down though because I feel great and I know I'm heading in the right direction.
Can we also talk about the difference in mirrors? Sometimes I get ready and look in the full length mirror at home and think I look slim and then later see myself in a different mirror and think "OMG I'm huge!" The mirrors at my gym keep it real and do not lie LOL22 -

That your brain will try to tell you that you are not making progress and to stop and not bother. Mine did that last night while I was doing kickboxing. It was trying to tell me I wasn't making progress, that I wasn't as good as the instructor in the video and to just not bother. I stopped for about 10 seconds and then started back up and listed all of the big and little scale victories and non-scale victories I had so far and that I would get better and faster at it and basically told off that part of my brain. I had to repeat the progress and victories twice more before it finally shut up.36

After Dissing Selfies for years, that I would actually like them after losing weight. My wife worked hard & finally broke my resistance. At least, she stopped saying that I remind her of her Grandpa "Poppy Joe". At least untill I give her another old fashioned opinion10

That you will become quite vain and never miss an opportunity to check yourself out in mirrors or windows. I must look so conceited when I do this out in public, but I can't stop being amazed that the fat me isn't there anymore!22

Omg, absolutely with the mirrors!!! Also, mirror vs pictures.... 2 different tales. It must be an optical illusion. I just don't know which one is right!9 -

I still don't like selfies, but after I reached my goal weight, people I knew through social media wanted pix as proof. I was surprised at the difference between a photo taken of me two years ago and the selfies I did last month. I suddenly have cheekbones and a pointy chin whereas before I had a puffy round face and multiple soft chins. Sometimes when I look down at my abdominal fat I'll forget the rest of me is thin now. When does the brain catch up?6 -

I don't know but I wish mine would hurry up - my poor brain has been used to four decades of seeing a hugely overweight person. I'm now a "healthy" weight (albeit at the very top of the healthy weight range) but I still see myself as huge. I see gaps that my children can fit through and think that I can't, only to find that I CAN. It's a very odd thing to deal with.

that 2 people commented on my weight loss "You are wasting away to nothing " said one. I looked at her and said " I have gone from obese to overweight, my goal is a healthy body weight". That ended the conversation quickly.48
