What nobody tells you about losing weight

That you don't have to starve yourself to lose weight. I'm 5'6", 135 lbs. I eat 1,800-2,000 calories a day and managed to lose 90 lbs (70 was pregnancy weight, yikes!) in 9 months.
This is so true. For the longest time I believed that the 1200 guideline was a rule rather than a general minimum. Yeah, not at 5'11.
Also nobody told me how bad I was at eyeballing portions or having any idea how many calories were in things. I was convinced that I wasn't eating that much and I was just doomed to be at a higher weight. Yeah, no.23 -

This was me exactly! "I don't eat very much - I must just be eating the wrong things!" Uh-huh. Until I started weighing my portions and realised how much I was really eating...!30 -

I've always eaten well. As much organic food as I could afford, eggs from a co-worker, beef from another co-worker, veggies from the farmers market, etc. . I honestly ate hardly any processed food or junk food. But wow......the portion sizes! I didn't realize it at the time but once I started weighing and measuring and counting the calories everything changed!19 -
That you will be freezing all the time!
And that you will get so many compliments wherever you go7 -
That as you get thinner (I have about another 30lbs to go before getting somewhere near to goal weight) your stomach will bulge hugely after eating (not even a particularly big meal).
I used to laugh at my daughter when she complained that eating made her clothes too tight but I can fully empathise with her now.
I never noticed this when I was obese.19 -
You may not notice a difference. Even though I'm buying smaller sizes I still see myself as my biggest.15

That it's harder to find clothes that fit when I'm a healthy weight than when I'm overweight.
My shoulders are broad, and my wingspan is huge for a woman, so when my boobs and belly go down to a sensible size I find it impossible to buy feminine long sleeve tops, or most tops in woven fabric.
When I'm fatter, I still struggle, but with persistence, I can often find something, because the sleeve length and shoulder breadth goes up with larger dress sizes.4 -
now that I'm no longer made up of 50% fat, I don't float as well in the pool38

I find that at a healthy weight that I care more about how clothes fit.12 -
That trying to date mid significant weight loss doesn't work so well >.<
I feel scared im saggy or lumpy and then i get scared they only like me because im getting skinny now XD Its like bipolar dating my mind still can't decide if im super confident or not in my new body, Definatly not at a place to share it with others
Funny thing is i was plenty confident 65 pounds ago not sure why weight loss makes all these insecurities come out.35 -

You have lost your Fat Armor, Love... you are exposed to the world. It takes some getting used to.

It really sucks Im hoping it will pass when i get smaller and less lumpy XD6 -
Mainly I love being able to dress without worrying about trying to hide all my rolls.
I love how much better my face looks in pictures. Over a certain weight I suddenly take horrible pictures.
I love how much better I feel. I have CF and Fibromyalgia and did not realize how much the better oxygen intake from exercising would make me feel.
I appreciate how supportive my family and friends are.
Just an FYI for those having trouble with beds being too hard on their bones after weight loss. I bought a memory foam mattress topper. Works great. I have got a 3" and a 4" thick with 4 lb density. Both work great on my old bones. 2" thick is not enough. Will not work as well if your mattress has dips and needs replaced.11 -
I've lost 70 lbs. Yes, some friends get envious of attention you get. They get over it or you move on.
Age makes a big difference! I'm 68 and I fit in some things I couldn't before at this weight. Strange, but true.
Family and friends support is important. My daughter led me to Fitness Pal and is my main cheerleader!
Glad others mentioned new mattress --- my hip bones hurt since I'm a side sleeper. Any type of mattress anyone recommends?
I'm always cold, but I was when I was heavy too. Thin and cold is better.
It's fun wearing clothes I only hoped to wear again. Even more fun buying new ones in a small rather than 2x!
Also helps to have a husband that says, "buy it!"
I have both kinds of arthritis and the weight loss has tremendous benefits. My rheumatologist is thrilled!
I recommend a 3" or 4" thick memory foam topper that has 4 lb density. It really helped me.4 -
I'm not embarrassed to wear shorts that don't come to my knees.
Me, too. I always rode bike and ran until I got ill for a long time. Then my legs got flabby. I've been doing a lot of walking/running the last 3 months. I'm 69 and suddenly my legs are back as good as ever. I've done so much walking that I've got tan legs and white feet (gym shoes). So the bottom half is great and the top half needs a ton of work, but it's a new goal and challenge, and I'm back in shorts. Yea!!16 -

Mine are sagging now. I still have 20 more pounds. I hope it doesn't get worse. They don't look to great in a bra either.
If you get the right bra they will. Take an afternoon and try on all different kinds. It's so worth it.5 -
I struggle with an irrational fear that if I miss a workout if I'm too tired or had to work late or something like that it will completely undo all the progress I have made and I will slip back into bad habits. the rational part of my brain knows it's nonsense and that sometimes you need an extra rest day, but it's still something that is lurking in the back of my mind and makes me anxious. I have lost over 25% of my starting bodyweight and I'm terrified to fail and go back to where I was...
I know. I have to do aerobic exercise religiously for the oxygen intake to keep from being ill. I'm scared to take a day off because I don't want to be sick again. Maybe it's a good thing for now to keep us motivated.6 -
How much anxiety I am having about maintaining my goal. I've only seriously lost weight before one other time in my life - like 20 lbs; but I gained that back and then some so this time around I had much more to lose and I only recently reached goal again. However, at 51 I cannot imagine me going through this process again and it's making me crazy.
Clothes have become an issue and I actually think I posted a comment awhile ago when someone requested suggestions on how to deal with adjusting to the new size - I believe I gave some flippant response about "go to a tailor" well I realize it's not that easy. I was going through my closet yesterday and it was a roller coaster #1 how big a difference a couple dress size are #2 there are some cute items I'm going to really miss. Yeah, yeah I get the whole shopping for new clothes, new size - I will definitely do that! And yes I will take many items to be altered by a tailor... but there are going to some items that I'll just need to let go. In the meantime I will wear my black skirt that I can roll the waistband down so it does not fall off every other day and hope no one notices!
I had to laugh. I'm 69 and I hope I never have to do it again, but I'll do what i have to do. Age is just a number and I sure wouldn't mind being a 'young' 51 again. I remember when my mother was having a hard time because her daughter was going to be 50, and now my daughter is going to be 50 this year. She has a 6 year old daughter and looks fantastic. You did great and I'll bet you look great too6 -

Great point.
When people ask me what I'm doing, the following conversation happens about 95% of the time:
Other person: "Wow, you look great! What are you doing?"
Me: "I'm calorie counting using Myfitnesspal. I also started running and strength training."
OP (while giving me a knowing look): "Ah, so it's the running."
Me: "Actually, I started running about 6 months before I started losing weight. I didn't start losing until I started calorie counting. Running lets me eat a little bit more, but if I wasn't counting, I wouldn't be losing."
OP: "I can't run which is why I can't lose weight."
I'll bet they could walk, which is how I started out
