If like me you had a really big belly for years before losing weight, your xiphoid process may be popped outward and protrude farther than it should. Mine is gradually returning to normal but is still more prominent than before I gained weight.
That’s really interesting. Your post inspired me to Google and sure enough, there’s a paper detailing this “rare anterior displacement” as a result of occupational injury or obesity causing traction and pulling it out of place. In a couple cases caused mysterious chest pain that was relieved by the removal of the xiphoid process. And it occurs to me just how powerful places like this thread are, where specific underserved populations can compare notes on stuff nobody’s talking about cuz it’s a small enough group nobody much cares. I mean, this particular example is pretty trivial, but I’m sure there are threads in forums for rare diseases and so forth where ordinary people sharing notes from their experience are major repositories of critical and overlooked information.
What an era we live in!23 -
I have a weight support group that I go to, and there was one woman I noticed who had switched over to our class. I looked at her and I thought she looks great. I wished I looked as good as her. I ended up sitting next to her and noticed that she weighed a pound more than me. At the end of the class I asked her how tall she was. She's an inch shorter. I told her that when I saw her I wished I looked as good as she does, and she said she had the same feeling when she looked at me. After losing 144 lbs I still don't feel like a normal person.52

-People asking if I'm sick because I've only lost weight when unhealthy before
-How happy my dogs are that their exercise has increased as well
-That I'm thrilled when I use a smaller plate instead of panicking
-I get excited to try new healthy recipes and how much I want to make them for everyone
-how hard it is to see friends/family that NEED to be healthier still eating only fast food15 -
That it changes clothes shopping. I generally shop at either Lane Bryant or thrift stores. I am one size away from being out of the Lane Bryant sizes and at thrift stores I had always just picked up the biggest size and hoped for the best. Now I actually have to try things on- partially because women's clothes sizes are stupid and the same size in different brands can be dramatically different but also because I have no sense of my own size. I can't look at a t-shirt and know if it will fit because I assume it's too small. I go with friends and they tell me something will fit - being pig headed I say no but they're pig headed too and make me try it on. I am still surprised when a Large fits me no problem. It may feel tight to me but I am assured by people I trust that it's not tight.17

yeah sweetheart, its good that you recognize this before you get to your goal weight. Figure out how to handle this because you dont want to finally go shopping and then uncontrollably buy everything that fits. You might regret spending that much money especially if you didn't intend to. Make plan of what you need AND want. But be in control. You want to enjoy your shopping experience as what you try on will fit and make you look fabulous.
Thanks. Upon further research, I’m going to try to do the capsule wardrobe thing, at least until I’m at a stable size. Something stops fitting you replace it, as opposed to seeing it as an invitation to go on a shopping.

Did anyone else have this depressing realization of how big they were? Like, I was aware that I was big, but then I lost 40lbs (since gained half back, fun times) and I was still big and it was like “good god, how fat was I?” (but with way more swearing).
That if you’re single some people will assume that’s what it’s all about. Like you’re losing weight to find a partner - yeah, no. My favourite part is the weird implication that you were like, intentionally hideous and wisened up, or something. (If that’s what it’s about for you no judgement, everyone’s motivations are different).35 -
It’s worse when your fav sister in law shows you a photo that she had of you and hadn’t let you see it because “how fat you were!” .. then down the track you gain it all with interesti .. and wonder what she’s thinking now

@zeldon919 Happened today! On another thread someone was saying they were 5'1" and almost 300 pounds when their doc suggested surgery. I was at 280 and 5'1" and didn't think I was heavy enough for surgery but apparently I was very close. I haven't seen a pic of me at that weight in a long time and I'm very happy about it. I think I might cry.17

Umm how.come when you lose weight and you look good some people come to you and the FIRST thing they say is "Are you sick?"9

That some days you just feel hungry all day! Maybe this is just me but I can do just fine within or very close to my calories goals most days but some days, even with healthy and filling foods, I'm just so so hungry. Today is one of those and I'm just trying to get through!23

I genuinely love fat and overweight people as I associate extra weight with hedonism. So when I look back at myself from 40lbs ago, I do not think how fat I was, but rather how much I loved life. I still do, but with restraint :-) !21

I get that after a certain point or get are you losing weight because you're stressed. No I'm just working hard... 😣9 -
That you will get cold much more easily and quickly. I went from 144 to 119 (though currently 122 and I’m working to get back to 119) and I cannot believe how much more easily I get cold. I know it’s because I lost a lot of my insulation. But still. I didn’t expect this.
And just how good you’re going to feel the first time you can fit into an extra small. I was so happy when I tried on and fit into a Banana Republic shirt that’s an extra small. I did buy it.11 -

A lot of the cold comes from eating in a deficit rather than actual body fat (it has an impact, just not as significant). Having a "diet break" and going to maintenance always warms me right up, no matter where I am with my weight.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't worry, it might not always be this bad!18 -

It's not the same as starving but a low grade hunger, especially in the evenings. You're fine all day long with your 3 meals but directly after eating dinner, this low grade hunger comes upon you in the form of old cravings.
That your tolerance and indifference for cravings and triggers is a muscle that will grow stronger with use.
I'm so glad I came across your comment. I have been scrolling for some comfort here because i've been feeling the low grade hunger you talked about and i wanted to find some motivation to not give in to the cravings.
I too experience this. It can be a real battle. If I just can't shake the feeling, I usually allow myself a piece of fruit, which is sweet and satisfying. There was a time of course when there was no way an apple would stave off my hunger, but that and a cup of hot tea miraculously does the trick these days.8 -
I have never had stomach issues quite so bad as I've had this week. I guess I thought it would go away, but I also have to remember that I'm getting older and that weight loss doesn't solve everything.17

No one told me how much more aware I would be of my own body and health. I would go so far as to say I've become a bit of a hypercondriac. On the one hand I can no longer put down to obesity every ache and pain. On the other hand I am so much more observant of my own physical shape, sensations, lumps and bumps. I used to ignore my physical-self, but after all my hard work losing weight I really place so much more value on it.14
