What nobody tells you about losing weight

A reality check-society, the general public, strangers, family, male friends, all treat me better-hold doors open sometimes even running to do so-making me feel like a celebrity or something. Its crazy how much better you are treated when you look attractive. I remember feeling invisible in public. Female friends can start treating you worse. I have experienced this twice with two different friends-its jealousy. Those same female friends telling you that you look too skinny when you are still 15 away from being out of the "overweight zone" on the bmi scale-this actually caused me to stop losing weight once. Now i know not to listen to others opinion on whether i am skinny enough or not. Looking in the mirror and still seeing the same person person i saw a year (and 60lbs) ago. Sometimes i cannot see whats really there. Sometimes i can see the change and feel great and other times, i still see fat-this scares me and makes me think there is something wrong with me.5

Forgot to mention something very important. For me there was pain in being fat. It really hurt to get up everyday. My back hurt and disrupted my sleep. If i went shopping-i hurt after. If i took my kids to the park-i hurt after. Everything hurt. The pain is gone now. Sleep is so much better now and i feel younger.8

You'll develop foot problems from losing weight-yep. 3 podiatrists have told me my chronic plantar fasciitis has developed from my weight loss, thanks to how my gait has changed. Also I've stretched and injured the muscles in the keystone arch of my feet from simply getting off my bum and walking my dog about a mile a week (roughly a quarter mile a day)
2 different back specialists have told me the reason I pulled my lower back muscles and nearly got a disk in my lower back knocked out of place is because I began swimming laps at the Y-roughly 20-25 laps a week (5-10 laps a day 3 days a week)

I go to the chiropractor frequently now because of pain in my tail bone, knee and heel. He tells me that as I have been losing weight, the body needs to adjust to the new shape and the muscles need to be developed to pull the frame into the right position. I have been strengthening the muscles and I am hopeful that it will get better over time, but it still hurts. I had plantar fasciitis before I lost weight. Along with heel spurs in both feet and a falling arch. After losing weight, I can no longer wear the orthotics the podiatrist sold me because they make my knee hurt. I assumed my gait had changed and I'm glad to hear that that actually does happen. Walking differently is definitely not something people talk about when discussing weight loss.
I'm sorry it caused your issues though. That bites.

That is so true! I have now lost 70 lbs and that is a full, max weighted, airline suitcase plus a carry on suitcase! I was lugging 15 litre jugs of water around on the weekend and thinking how heavy those things are ... I've lost 25 kg, so almost 2 of those. Hard to imagine!! No wonder I was having difficulties climbing hills.

Yes, yes and yes! I keep buying track pants and monitoring the prices. I even bought e next size down as "goal pants"!
I love getting impressed at being able to do more than I previously could and adding new exercises as they get easier!
I have a bin of larger clothes and I will go through a whole clothes trying-out session to put more things in there and pull out older small clothes that haven't fit in a long time!1 -
I walk quite a bit (steps adding to 5 miles a day) and work out on an elliptical. I am puzzled by how much thinner my thighs are! They are thinner than what they were when I was at this weight when my weight was going in the opposite direction (up rather than down as now). I just tried out an old pair of shorts that used to fit me nicely and they look horrible because my thighs are thinner and it looks like my legs are swimming in them!
I even discovered that I can cross my legs all the way so that my foot touches my calf! I couldn't even do that when I was at my goal weight when I was young and I am still 54lbs from my goal weight!3 -
Love this! I just started and need to lose 40.. Only 2 so far. Hardest thing for me is giving up my wine:/
You can make the wine fit @nise82! I do! I would have a glass almost every day and I'm down 52 pounds!

I guess it was BIG FAT LIE I told myself that only people who are 'specially trained' can do it.2 -
Who would of guessed that when I'm feeling lazy and taking a day off from my fitness challenge that I set myself it's because it's just too easy and that I know I can catch up the next day!0

It didn't occur to me that I'd have to buy smaller underwear. I was getting really annoyed thinking something was wrong with them when it occurred to me that they were just too big! Haha! Should have thought of that earlier but....what they hey2

TX here. And no weight listed. But I did live in Louisiana and they put it on there.
Weight on your license is not standard in Canada. It's a provincial decision. Manitoba doesn't do it.0 -
That I am still incredulous of my weight/size losses. I have these little moments where I fit in old clothes of a smaller size I hadn't been able to even squeeze into before and then think well, this new thing I bought is 4 sizes bigger and tighter than the old thing, so it must not be true. I must still be the larger size...THEN i go back and remind myself that that dress/pants/etc. I have been wearing was a pipe dream even 20 lbs ago...0

I (barely) picked up a dog food bag that weighed 55 pounds, which is how much I've lost. Amazing. Also, I started a year ago with my fitbit. I've only lost a little over 20 pounds this year, but with all the working out I've gone from a size 16 to the size 10 jeans I bought 2 days ago. I haven't felt this good in my body for 40 years!

So glad you posted this - I hadn't even thought about this. I've lost 67 lbs and have 45 to go so it definitely will make a difference. Have to make a mental note, just in case. Most meds that are supposed to make you drowsy don't for me, or at least they didn't.0 -
That i have to hold my trousers when i walk in the office to stop them falling down.
Being told that you are probably the smallest in the office and not even realising that this could actually be true
Enjoying the hunger pangs a little bit because you know it means you are loosing the weight
You can have cheat days and it doesn't actually matter
Family either don't notice you loose weight, or, they just cant be bothered to compliment you
How fun it is to actually plan your food days in advance and feel in control
How good it makes you feel when you are sat with someone who scoffs their face and you feel that you don't need to do that any more( most of the time)

I had some minor in/out surgery they gave me some Norco's for the pain afterwards. Normally this was not an issue it just makes me sleepy. However this time it made me higher than a kite after the first pill the second one made me high and sick lol.0 -

I have been up and down with my weight overt the last 15 years. This list is awesome, reminds me of all the things I have to look forwards to as I get back to a healthy weight.... Feeling my collar bones was one of my favorites. Thanks for the reminders everyone!!!!
This is exactly me! I was 48 lbs lighter about 8 years ago when I'd lost a lot of weight (having another baby and 8 years later and I'm pretty much back to where I was before). Anyway, when I'd lost weight before I was amazed AND LOVED my collar bones. I am also enjoying reading about the things I have to look forward to again! I also was amazed at my calves, loved shopping for clothes, was cold ALL the time, loved compliments, etc. etc. etc. 48lbs to be where I was, 52 to goal!2 -
Such a great thread! I've lost 45lbs in 5 months, with not a lot of change in the first 3 1/2, it seems, but the last 6 weeks it became dramatic! I just finished week 1 of maintenance with losing .2#, so I'm still trying to figure it out, and I'm okay with that!
Things I didn't expect or have pleasantly discovered:
-constantly looking down when I'm walking because I can't hear/feel my jeans/legs rubbing together
-finding my pants are longer, even the current size, because I'm taking up less sideways space
-feeling full after a meal, putting my hand on my belly and it going down further than expected because it's flatter,
-having to double up my workout mat to do sit ups/crunches because my tailbone hurts against the floor
-crossing my legs! It's easier and not awkward
-new friends! Peeps that eat healthier and work out seem to draw one another
-the encouragement I give others who are friends, or even people I don't know well that have watched me in my weight process
-FINALLY answering my inside-my-head-question, "Am I going to have to do this for the rest of my life??? (i.e. exercise, watch my calories, get on the scale, etc., etc., etc.), with a happy, "YES!, and it's totally worth it!"
-not being self-conscious about my stomach, 'love handles', booty, or whatever, showing as 'overflow' in my clothes.
-my office chair hurting my tailbone (I suffer from SI Joint Dysfunction) and having to get an exercise ball to sit on - Win-Win!
I'm so hopeful that these will become the norm for me, that I won't ever 'go back'.

That I would feel taller.
I started experiencing that feeling when I had dropped about 40 lbs. I don't know if it is just that I felt less dumpy or that my posture is better ...
But the funny thing is, just yesterday one of my coworkers was going on again how I shouldn't lose any more weight and made the comment that "because I am so tall ... losing more weight will make me look extra thin". Wait ... "because I am so tall?" I'm 5'6". I'm not exactly a giant. But maybe the weight loss makes me look taller? Or maybe it is posture.4 -
