How to make regular cheerios taste good?

I gave up reading through it all. If not already suggested, since the honey nut ones have 25% of the daily iron and the regular has 45% of daily iron... Just eat twice as much of the honey nut ones. Same total iron in the end, a few more calories (but so would adding things to regular cheerios like sugar or honey, so doesnt matter).0

i still need an answer to the question about putting sugar on dry cereal. can that be done?
i find that it falls off, so i've been eating my cheerios like tequila.
i place the cheerios in a shot glass, lick the back of my hand, sprinkle sugar on the wet spot, then i lick the sugar, take the shot, and slam the glass down.
so far it works pretty well, but it takes me forever to eat breakfast that way.

Stop. It is not going to make or break your blood hemoglobin to eat one kind of cereal over another.
Add more iron-rich foods to your diet AS A WHOLE and stop picking over minor things. Eat a spinach salad and steak for dinner. Have Broccoli and Hummus for a snack. Eat lots and lots of clams, mussels, and oysters (gram for gram, these are the foods richest in bioavailable iron) and instead of snacking on just dried cereal, add some pumpkin seeds and nuts, both of which are very rich in iron.
And, honestly, if you are so anemic that you can't stand up to get dressed? Your doctor should have prescribed you a supplement immediately. That's very extreme.
Yeah, I missed that. We are not being told the whole story here and it's pretty obvious that the OP either needs to go get real help or she is a minor. Either way she's not being honest here.
I'd guess malnourishment from not eating enough food? Which could be why she wasn't put on a supplement if the doctor knows about this, and maybe s/he was urging OP to like... eat more food period.0 -

Yeah but that sounds like way more fun.0 -
Positive outcome of this thread: I was reminded of the deliciousness that is multi-grain Cheerios, and I bought a box the other day for the first time in forever for a wonderful "watching-TV-snack." Thanks!!!0

This is STILL going?
Seriously OP, suck it up & take a supplement.
Or make Rice Krispie Treats & just use Cheerios instead.0 -
I happen to like the plain Cheerios without any sugar or anything. Have them in some almond milk for some added flavor without adding regular cane sugar.0

I understand some of you are frustrated with me but there's no reason to be rude and keep making comments regarding my age. Obviously a 13 year old wouldn't be this low in iron.
To the person who said to just take a liquid iron supplement, that is not an option for me. I have braces (and yes I am an adult with braces) and my orthodontist has advised me against it. Liquid iron turns your teeth black. Even my regular doctor told me it stains your teeth and tastes horrible and she wouldn't do it.
I have an important question. I know that red meat is rich in iron and it can correct anemia. I have looked up red meat and the iron content varies from 10% to 15% per serving. The ground turkey meat I eat has 8% iron per serving. I don't see a huge difference here. So why would red meat work and ground turkey meat not work?
A couple weeks ago I had pasta with turkey meatballs and lima beans. I had more of the meat and less of the pasta. I normally have more pasta than meat. I also had a Vitamin C rich popsicle for dessert. I felt like I could breathe better and it lasted a couple days. I could stand up while getting dressed instead of sitting on my bed. I felt so much better! So does ground turkey meat work? Do you just have to eat a lot of it? I'm not understanding what it is about red meat since the iron percentages are close.
"Liquid forms of iron supplement tend to stain the teeth. To prevent, reduce, or remove these stains:
Mix each dose in water, fruit juice, or tomato juice. You may use a drinking tube or straw to help keep the iron supplement from getting on the teeth.
When doses of liquid iron supplement are to be given by dropper, the dose may be placed well back on the tongue and followed with water or juice.
Iron stains on teeth can usually be removed by brushing with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or medicinal peroxide (hydrogen peroxide 3%).
"
"Liquid iron supplements can discolour teeth; however, the stain is temporary. You can minimise staining by diluting the liquid iron dose in half a glass of water or orange juice and drinking it through a straw. Rinsing your mouth with water afterwards is also helpful.
If the staining is still a problem, talk to your dentist about teeth-cleaning options."
Maybe at this point you should just snort some crushed up iron pills since you seem to have an aversion to ALL forms of iron supplements and seem ridiculously tied to the notion of getting your needed iron from a cereal you don't even like.
smh.
There is like a .00001% chance the OP would be willing to do any of that.
This. Whatever solution is provided OP is going to find some reason it won't work for her.. unless of course someone can tell her a way to get 100% of her iron eating some sugary cereal ('cause it has to be sweeter than original Cheerios).0 -
Wow, this is ridiculous. So your iron is such a serious issue that it's causing you health problems yet you won't take a supplement and your doctor tells you not to take it in liquid form because "it tastes gross" and can stain your teeth, even though there are several ways to avoid that (as suggested by another poster)? Yeah, okay.0

Sugar on dry cereal? Easy. Use powdered sugar.

Seriously. There is something more going on. My kids are horrible picky eaters. I confess. Their father rubbed off on them. He's a picky eater too. Neither of them them have nutritional deficiencies. Let alone to this point.
OP has to have some SERIOUS issues to be so ill that she can't stand up.

Eat oatmeal.0

Regular cheerioes taste fine to me. I think it's a matter of training your taste buds not to need super-sweet all the time by weaning yourself off sweetened cereals. I still have a hard time with regular oatmeal over the sweetened instant kind, but as far as cold cereals go I can have regular cheerios and be happy.0

I was also really picky growing up, no nutritional deficiencies.
So I'm guessing OP is under-eating, and could also be under-age since there seems to be a handful of responses here linking excessive pickiness with youth.0 -

No joke. I had really severe anemia during my last pregnancy, to the point that they called in a specialist to look at my juice because the red blood cells were turning in to balloon animals or something.
Even then, I could stand up to get dressed. (I did have to take breaks on the way up flights of stairs, though.)
Treatment was advice to eat liver (I passed on that one) and dark greens (done with gusto) and a prescription for Hematogen Forte capsules.
No Cheerios were harmed in the treatment of my anemia. Well, no more than usual. I love Cheerios.0 -

Hmmm... How much do you suppose that bag weighs? 30lbs?
Let's go with 30lbs as a guess... Google tells me popcorn has 0.9mg per oz x 30 x 16 = 432mg of iron in that bag!0 -

Unless we are on vacation or I cook pancakes, my husband eats dry cheerios EVERY SINGLE MORNING for breakfast. And has since before I met him. He also eats them for a snack a couple times a week. I like plain cheerios, but with milk.
Oh! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who will eat dry cereal as a snack! I thought I was just a weirdo.
I mean... I'm still a weirdo... but for other reasons.0 -

Not at all, I keep plain original cheerios in a glass container on my desk for munching. HOney Nut would be OK but the sugar coating on them makes my fingers sticky, so the plain ones are cleaner for work. ANother good one for that is Captain Crunch, but I haven't done that since I cut sugar back.0 -
I love Apple Cinnamon Cheerios. I don't buy them anymore because I don't think I would be satisfied with just one serving and I'd rather use my calories elsewhere. Same for about 95% of all cold cereals.
I remember back when I was a teenager, getting out a box of plain Cherrios, pouring an unknown amount into a bowl (probably 3-4 servings worth), and then breaking out the sugar. Oh I would pile it 4-8 tsp deep. Eating that milk soaked sugar with the Cherrios was delicious.0 -
I've been taking liquid iron supplements almost daily for ten years, and never had my dentist or a doctor comment on me having or being at risk of stained teeth. Even if I had noticed that, I'd take that over fainting in public places, getting dizzy climbing stairs, and feeling so tired all the time I wanted to cry.0

Duh, just use a spoon or wear gloves!0 -
*Disclaimer* I did not read the whole thread, I just saw that there was 9 pages of thread about cheerio's and that made me chuckle. Carry on!

OP, HERE IS MY ADVICE.
I said it over and over again as every.single.week. you post about the same thing. You need to talk to a THERAPIST about your irrational fear of supplements. Until then, no cereals are going to get your iron levels back where they need yo be.0 -

BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »kristinegift wrote: »I'm just wondering what OP's diet looks like with all this cereal, but no milk/dairy because calcium impedes iron absorption. Where are all the non-iron nutrients?
I do have cereal with milk for breakfast but it doesn't give me anywhere close to what I need since like you said calcium inhibits iron absorption. So that's why I'm trying to get more iron in my snack. I don't like popular iron foods like red meat or dark green leafy vegetables besides hotdogs, broccoli, and lettuce.
I'm getting non-iron nutrients I need. My B12 and D are normal. I know my Vitamin C is normal cause I have over 100% just in breakfast from orange juice and that doesn't include everything else during the day. I get plenty of calcium from the milk and I eat cheese daily. So overall I'm getting most of the nutrients I need. I just need iron.
Stop eating milk with your cereal and increase your hotdog, broccoli, and lettuce intake.
Lol! I never heard someone saying "increase your hotdog intake"

Are you kidding me?!!!!!! That's the bullshitiest excuse i've ever heard! I had braces for 4 years as an adult, taking liquid iron supplement DOES NOT turn your teeth black. Also I've never heard of a doctor choosing a patient's taste buds and teeth aesthetics over remedying their health woes. I mean, my doctor doesn't choose to not do a blood test if it's required simply because they make me queasy and I start bawling my eyes out when it happens.0 -
Patient: Can barely get out of bed or sit up
Doctor: Don't take what you need, honey, it will stain your teeth, have some Cheerios instead.
