As an alternative you could try higher protein grains like quinoa, spelt etc which helps hit your macros on a lower calorie allowance, or low carb low cal vegetables masquerading as carbs such as cauliflour "rice" and courgette "pasta" (using a spiraliser tool) and beansprout "noodles" HTH x
I wouldn't call Quinoa and Spelt "low calorie" at all.

It's hardly a massive amount like a protein shake but every little bit helps when you are working with a very low calorie allowance surely.

Myself Ive pretty much quit eating bread, but I enjoy my steel cut oats. I quit bread because I quit PB and J sandwiches (only ones I ever ate) way to many of them. I will still have a few rolls and butter with a nice family dinner or something special occasion but that is it.0

That is an incorrect definition of what a complex carb is. Fiber itself is a complex carb, but since you can't really digest it all that's left are the simple carbs in the fruit, which are glucose, fructose, etc.

It's just a terminology issue. From Wikipedia:

Simple, complex has always been a bone of contention with me because it really has no applicable meaning as it relates to nutrition.0

People want simple to mean bad and complex to mean good (as they define it), so you get idiots misusing it all the time (usually confusing it with refined vs. less refined, but the same people quite often hate potatoes, which are unrefined in many uses so it gets even weirder). Complex are just starches (the chemical chain of which they are made up is more complex) and simple just, well, simpler sugars, which is where the calories in fruit come from.
It doesn't have anything to do with how fast something is digested or the current obsession with the GI/GL.
Walter Willett in Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy (which I don't agree with in some respects, but which is a pretty good example of mainstream thought by nutrition experts) dismisses the simple/complex distinction as a real one chemically but completely irrelevant to nutrition and notes that your body treats complex carbs like potatoes and white bread (starches) basically like sugars. (Willett would completely agree with those who say that fiber matters or that whole grains are better, of course.)
That people bend over backwards to try and make the simple/complex distinction mean something nutritionally is just comical. The definition on the page cited above is inconsistent with the lists of foods given, even.0
