Long distance running is absolutely awful for body compositions. Especially THAT long.

Diet, lift, and SPRINT. You will be incredibly lean in no time.

Indeed. All of those marathon fatties. yuck.

Are you being sarcastic? If so, then look google pictures of sprinters compared to distance runners. You will change your view. Marathoner runners look gross. The chicks are skinny fat with no *kitten*. Sprinters look PERFECT physically.

Gah harsh much no one can respect a well trained female athlete?

Long distance running is absolutely awful for body compositions...

That's kind of a subjective statement. It depends on what body composition you're going for. I've gotten awesome results that are just exactly what I want for myself by strength training AND long-distance running. The lifting has eliminated any running injuries I used to get and greatly improved my race pace. The running I do for fun, cardio fitness and for stress relief. I maintained my body fat and weight at goal throughout my marathon training.

P.S. In response to your comment on runner's bodies: I am a marathon runner and I am NOT GROSS. Thanks for your input, though. I'll give it all the consideration it deserves.

Hello from the NW. If you run marathons and you can bench 185lbs, you are in a pretty elite status. Given that high level of fitness, I recommend you really get a good bodyfat measurement. If you are at a really low bodyfat level, it's going to be really tough to lose weight while lifting. You may not even want to lose more weight.

Yep seriously stop bashing the marathon runners, besides these ladies aren't doing it to achieve a certain look, they're doing it to be at the top of their chosen sport.

I personally prefer having a bit more muscle on me but if I had to look like that to compete at a certain level I'd do it.

Train and eat for performance and maintain whatever body type is most suited for what you want to achieve

    1) of course they are being sarcastic
    2) body shaming - nice!
    3) I do not think you understand the definition of skinny fat.

Wasn't trying to put anyone down. I'm saying at the extreme end of the spectrum, the pro marathoners... Are NOT pleasant to look at. Not saying anyone here or that runs a lot looks gross!!! But thats the road it brings you down. In contrast the average sprinter looks amazing.

And I'm pretty sure I know what skinny fat means. C'mon now. Lol.

First of all, how on earth can you not see you are putting anyone down? You just did it again.

Secondly, if you think they are skinny fat, no you do not know what it means.

The last time i was checked i was at 18%. But I had just got done running 8 miles soooo... I'm not sure how accurate the test was. After i found out being dehydrated could make the percentage higher. Thanks for your reply without the drama. ;) you are right i should just get my body fat checked.

Someone else mentioned Rachel Cosgrove--I think this particular article might be of interest to you:

    http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/the_final_nail_in_the_cardio_coffin

Cosgrove talks about what happened with her body composition whilst training and competing in her first Ironman.

Of course they don't run for looks lol wow. But their goal is irrelevant to this convo. We are discussing body composition and the effect long distance running has on it.

It's not me being harsh. It's science. Sorry if I offended you all so much lol.

Seriously, google pictures of marathoners vs sprinters. This is not opinion, it's widely accepted scientific fact lol. Long distance burns your muscle. Not to mention all the negative effects it has on your hormones...

There was no fat gain. Training for a marathon caused higher levels of glycogen storage, which led to more water weight. That's why you gained on the scale, and why your abs disappeared (body builders intentionally dehydrate themselves before a competition to increase muscle definition.) after the marathon, you scaled back your running, your body released the extra glycogen, and hence the extra water weight, and you're back to where you were.

I'm stating a fact lol. But if you think that skinny, square shape with no curves or muscle mass is attractive, go for it lol. I'll take the sprinter look any day ;)

    Lol - what fact?

And no-where did I actually express my personal preference as to aesthetics...oh, and lol.

The fact is right in front of you. Look at sprinters and look at marathoners.

Damn, this is like arguing with a religious person.

Preferences to aesthetics are not fact.

Sprinters and endurance runners have a different body composition - yes, and I never argued that they did not. How do you not get that?

    LaurenAOK,

My run sessions were between 3-4 hours long not 30 min. You seem good at math.....imagine how many calories I would need to eat to gain 10lbs while burning that many calories.

Thanks for your reply but I was interested in advice from someone who can relate with those numbers.
Are you sure your gain in lbs was not muscle ?

You're mad at the FACT that extreme long distance running creates a body shape that is not feminine nor lean, and certainly not attractive. How the hell can you get mad at such an obvious truth?

Do I need to break it down for you? Do you want the science of it on a cellular and hormonal level? Lol

*sigh* long distance runners are not lean?...lololol...

and finding someone attractive is preference not fact ffs.

She's mad that you are saying a certain body shape is not attractive, gross and unfeminine. She is not mad about the body composition aspect. Is that broken down enough for you?

Nice to see men also buy into the "real women have curves" nonsense that is floating around at the mo (and by the way I DO have curves, but I don't determine a woman's value by her body shape)

Not that lean, no. Not like sprinters. And have no muscle mass. Nobody is attracted to a walking stick.

Ummm pretty sure men have it programmed into their DNA to be attracted to feminine traits and body shape. Boobs, wide hips small waist, big butt... This is proven fact. Read a book. Damn, even watch a documentary. How are you this ignorant to science?

Yes. I think she's trying to find the right balance between the two to get the body she wants. Which is why I'm reading these posts because I am having the same problem. But then "some people" are creating all kinds of drama on this post and it's making it very difficult to find the answer.
