So answer me this, since you're so deadset on fear mongering: how is it that over the course of a year I managed to lose fifty five pounds while eating things I still enjoy (cake, ice cream, fast food) and still remain in optimal health? I've been to the doctor recently and found zero problems (aside from my genetically high blood pressure, which is actually slightly reduced for the first time since I was sixteen).
Besides, define "bad diet." Ever heard of a "balanced diet"?

Counting calories is a brilliant way to lose weight initially but can be very hard for some to maintain in the long term. That's why alternative ways to maintain weightloss have to be found for some people after they reach their goal. For others, counting calories works brilliantly over the long term because it fits their nature. I think we can all agree that everyone is different and half the time it's just the struggle of finding what works for you.
I'm not going to dismiss scientific studies outright just because they are badly reported. There could be a range of ways that gut bacteria can help with weightloss that has nothing to do with calories in/calories out side. Such as reducing hunger pangs after meals. There is both the physical and mental factors that are tightly linked with weightloss and gain. Any studies which can help us more clearly understand how our wonderful, complex bodies work are always enlightening and often very helpful.0 -

The statement actually deals with the fact that a runner who is making good nutritional choices will tend to out perform a runner who is not. We can't jump from that and conclude that that means that a person can't run enough to overcome a high calorie count. If the runner doesn't simultaneously increase his consumption, he can reduce weight by increasing his running. He may be running more slowly than his competitors because of his bad nutritional choices, but he can overcome his calorie intake.0 -

I eat a diet comprised mostly of foods that paleo eaters won't eat... dairy and legumes. I also throw in a little treat every night.
When I started on MFP, I had high cholesterol. Simply from losing 38 pounds? I've lowered it into normal range with good ratio.
The bottom line? Losing weight is what improved your blood work.

I eat a diet comprised mostly of foods that paleo eaters won't eat... dairy and legumes. I also throw in a little treat every night.
When I started on MFP, I had high cholesterol. Simply from losing 38 pounds? I've lowered it into normal range with good ratio.
The bottom line? Losing weight is what improved your blood work.
Exactly, there's been plenty of work done showing that simply losing weight, no matter how, is already going to improve your health, and so does just exercising.0 -

The title is misleading. Being a person who had severe digestive issues for 6-12 months. I did my research on the subject. Gut health is probably the most critical part for the human body to function properly.

I wish articles wouldn't make dumb@$$ blanket statements like that. Sure there are other factors that can come into play when it comes to a person's health. It doesn't mean it doesn't work! It's articles like that give people such moronic ideas about what it takes to lose weight. And it's articles like this that leave people so confused that they give up before they even start.
This was exactly my point by posting it originally. Despite where the research comes from, people who read the DM (or any other tabloid/media source) still read it and give it credibility because it ultimately came from a 'scientific' study. But from now on - I want you to eat 1500 calories of cake/day for a year. That's it. You can't have anything else. I want to know what you will look and feel like after one year.
Nobody on here will do it. It's obvious why - if you did - you wouldn't be healthy and fit even with exercise. There would be things going wrong that would uproot your exercise regimen and your health.
You can't outrun a bad diet.
Go eat 1500 calories of nothing but broccoli for a year and then let's compare each other's bloodwork then. Always need a control group. I'd prefer the year of nothing but McDonalds though.

Actually, for the sake of science I think you should carry out your experiment in Germany.
It's a commonly held belief that German calories are much more efficient. You could carry it out Mythbusters style.0 -

BTW. I used to rarely if ever go to McDonalds or any kind of fastfood place when I was a kid/teenager (I'm talking once in 2 years or so here). I ate 3 meals a day homemade by my parents. I was also always fat and had all kinds of health problems.
Nowadays I eat some kind of fastfood every week, I also lost over 20 kilos and am healthier than I ever was.0
