Sharon sounds like a great vacation.

Joyce I agree the although the bushes are neatly groomed, they are too big for your home. They also present a security problem in that provide too much cover if someone decided to rob your home. I agree with Miriam to be careful with a landscape company, they sometimes are only interested in the short term and want to put in as many plants as they can because it means more money for them. One possibility is to look in your own neighborhood and find homes you like their landscaping. Find out what those plants are and how they went about it. Also find out how much maintenance the plantings create.

For us most of our bushes only need to be pruned once a year before the fourth of July. Then there is the diva hedge we inherited from the previous owner. It is over 50 feet long and needs to be pruned about every three weeks long, treated for Japanese Beetle, protected from rabbits in the winter, cleaned out at the base once to twice a year. The reasons we put up with it: One is it would be such a massive job to take it out. Two it provides us with wonderful natural privacy from a neighbor who has only mowed their yard twice this summer. (Love them anyway)

Miriam the garden tour I just went on was the Master Gardeners of Dakota County. It was so much fun to share my passion with them. Continued prayers for your son.

Beth continued prayers for your son.

Toni just read your story after I e-mailed you. Your strength amazes me. Yes I have seen too many children as an educator struggling with the challenges you described. I would love to get together with you. Finding solutions that are effective that bring these children to wellness will take the whole village. All of us will benefit from your work. Thank you. You are on the right site. Yes this is a site about setting goals for weight loss. I am also finding it a site that advocates total health. Mind body spirit emotional . Because for me at least to really maintain weight loss/health all of these need nurturing.

Miriam I have learned the hard way the only behavior I can really manage is my own and sometimes for me it take Herculean effort.

Whew after all this time for me to go garden.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .

    Good Morning Ladies,

Michele NC, just enjoy that Hot Flash and remember why you are thankful that you rarely have them anymore. tantrum.gifRemember, we get opportunities all the time and just have to realize them. It’s funny, I have been through that stuff for years and still occasionally have a flash. Ya just never know?

Lenora, I did actually consider taking a few things to see about being altered, but in looking at them, realize they would practically have to be remade, so just don’t think it is worth it. Just a few years ago, you could get things altered at a reasonable price, but those people have become real proud of their skills. smiley-rolleyes010.gif

Becca, what do you mean in Oregon you cannot pump your own gas? Does the attendant do it for you? Strange that my DD didn’t mention that to me after she moved there last year. And where were you when you did pump your own recently? I do like the shoes, but vote for checking out Pay Less before spending that kind of money on them. I just hate to spend that on something I would wear only on occasion.

Pip and Barbie, ya’ll just keep up that great exercise. Maybe if I read about it often enough some of the good results will rub off on me? Ya think? Huh? Maybe? Hopefully!

Sylvia, I know how you feel about eating chili after the last two times. Even though you know it had nothing to do with the problems, it’s a very mental thing. Been there done that.

Mary, so glad the roof is done and keeping my fingers crossed for the closings. You enjoy that sun and fun in LV. You deserve it along with DH.

Dimmom, welcome. Please tell us about yourself so we can get to know you. Also please end each post with a name that you want us to call you as well as a location. If you can log your food, you can use this site. When I started, I thought I’d starve to death on just 1200 calories a day, so I began by looking up the calories in lots of foods that I like. From there, I got a list of can eat and never eat foods that I used as a base. Planning ahead is a big help to stay in your calorie allotment. Exercise of any kind helps. Oh and staying away from ice cream, alone or in a crowd, is a good idea. smiley-eatdrink027.gif Come often and post when you want. We are here for support.

Sue, do pop in to say Hi once in a while and let us know how you are doing. No one will fuss at you for not getting any exercise, that’s for sure.

Katla, sorry for the sore back. I hope Santa is happy in his new spot. Feel better soon.

Joyce, I laughed about you saying “it’s a bad thing for me to know” about the brownie bites at Walmart. Ain’t that the truth?? Some really yummy things are just better for us if we don’t even know about them. Wow Wee, those bushes have become overgrown. It will look like a different house when they are gone and something new and small is in their place. Please remember to show us a picture of that.

Simquilts, welcome. Please tell us about yourself and sign each post with a name you want to be called. It is also helpful to put a location, general or specific. Come often, this thing works and this group of ladies is great for support and information.

Sharon, your vacation sounds great and certainly not dull. Glad you are home safely so not we can see more of you.

Heather, being the great cook that you are, I’m sure you will occasionally have a bad meal out. I like the light idea in your room.

Allison, what is the prognosis for your DSIL? That sounds pretty serious. shy.gif

Toni, thanks for sharing your story with us. I’d say Daniel is one lucky kid to have found you and have you fight for him. It is so frustrating that you had to go through all that crap!

welcome.gif to any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.

At my last Doctor’s appointment, he did an x-ray of my shoulder which has been getting worse and worse lately. I thought it was arthritis but he said there was just a little there. It is bad enough that it is keeping me from sleeping well lately. I’m doing specific exercises for it and if it doesn’t improve soon will probably break down and get a shot in it. Going to be a beautiful day here, with lower humidity for a day, so will try to get out and enjoy it.

I hope you all have a happy and healthy day. rose.gif

    Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
    and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.

Wow what a week- three days gone from home but I stayed on track- no food temptation to snack on and i had a burner to cook just what I would eat. My weigh loss was good for the week.

I too have a son with MH issues. He is socially behind. Tried to go to work for the first time and had a panic attack. So Psych eval and now in counseling which the counselor wants us to go too. So still learning how to parent when my "baby" is 24. He is also working with Voc Rehab. He has Psoriatic Arthritis too.

The manager was fired yesterday, thank the good Lord for small favors.

And, speaking of getting exactly what's necessary, I was also allowed to promote the hostess to crew chief, which I did yesterday. Moves from part-time to full-time and from $11 to $15 an hour and I need her there... Tomorrow is the big cleaning day, shutting down at 4 p.m. until 11 a.m. the next day. Will be tearing apart the kitchen, degreasing and power washing all of it, and putting it all back together, as well as the rest of the restaurant.

Back to my family--daughter, grandbabies - 4 mo girl and 4 year old boy-- and my son-in-law are here for a week, as well, and the daughter and SIL will come in and assist. Taking today off, and taking a nap. Later, guys.

Gayle, my son has trouble reading faces (partly due to poor eyesight) and that makes it really hard, so he is also socially behind. He is 31 and sometimes acts like he is 16 still. I knew some of the psych docs in Boise very well, twenty years ago, since I worked on the psych unit at St. Al's. I was doing "peer support" decades before it became well known. I hope your therapist is one of the good ones! Skill teaching, not hand holding!

Joyce: I'm with you! Heather can have my share of Indian food, too. Spicy foods don't agree with me. I agree with your advice to Pip regarding the MS ride. I don't have MS but DH does. Pip can ride in the event twice next year. I had a chocolate lava cake for my birthday this year. It was the very first time I've tasted it, and I'll be happy to make that a tradition! Yum! Your azalea will likey grow to a better shape after it has the space it needs, but it will take a little time. :flowerforyou:

miriamwithcats: I graduated from a Master Gardener course, too, in the mid 1970's. It has served me well all these years. I was more focused on growing food than landscape design at the time, but my interests have broadened and the skills I learned have been invaluable. Your suggestions for Joyce are excellent ideas. Kudos for your skill, courage and persistence with the courts & child welfare system. That takes intelligence, determination, and grit. :flowerforyou:

Toni in MN: Wow! Your courage and persistence are inspirational. I think your Trauma Mama series will find an enthusiastic readership. :flowerforyou:

Pip: My mama suffered from foot cramps at night most of her life. I was having issues as I entered menopause but I've rarely had them since I started taking calcium and vitamin D. :flowerforyou:

Barbie: Enjoy the dog show! We missed the Portland dog show this year. I particularly enjoy the agility events.

Lestan: You will be missed and I hope you decide to come back soon.

We have a cloudy and misty morning here with mild temperatures. We surely need a bit of rain. Photos and messages from DS and DDIL indicate they're having a great time sailing in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. They're headed to Canada today and I wonder where they'll be going through customs. We have liked Bedwell Harbor as a port of entry, and have also gone into Victoria as a port of entry. We have stayed aboard the boat eating apples more than once before going through customs at Bedwell. I am enjoying their trip vicariously. The places they're going have happy memories for me.

@Peachstategal - I'm not saying we don't love our guns; I'm just tired of the constant barrage of calls we get from NRA - when we already support them. We get at least 12 - 15 calls a day from them, showing different versions of their name on different number. Of the 12 #s I can block - they take up 3/4th of them; when I hit 12 I have to take some off; then the calls on increase. To me, this is harassment and nothing can or will be done about it. Actually, there is really no way to know if it is NRA calling or someone else - big brother. We chose not to answer them. Just wish they'd take the hint.

Ow! Ow! Ow! My hips HURT!

Walked both ways into town, 40 mins at 3 mph both ways, then 3 hours slow ambling through the cathedral, Mompesson House and the museum. Yikes! My "wear and tear" on my hips did not like it. Been resting, have taken a pain pill and will soon get ready to go out for the evening.

The cathedral was fabulous, as expected, with an amazing 13th century "quire". The carvings were amazing with lots of mythical dogs. I thought of Sylvia as there was one just like a whippet! I saw the Magna Carta of 1217 (Google?) and the oldest working clock! ! ! ! Shame all the mediaeval glass is gone.

Mompesson house had an extraordinary collection of 18th century drinking glasses and some beautiful early English ceramics. Great plaster ceilings. Also a lovely garden where people were playing croquet. It is the house where much of the film Sense and Sensibility was filmed and there was an exhibition with the costumes.

Salisbury Museum was amazing. I had no idea what they had in there. It is very near Stonehenge, so, of course, there was a lot of stuff from that, but I was knocked over by the finds they were displaying. The Amesbury Archer (Google) is there and wonderful Anglo Saxon burials. Also Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Bronze age stuff. The gold necklace was so new looking and 3, 500 years old. DH wouldn't believe it was real. Then we looked at the Wedgwood ceramics, stunning, and then the historical stuff from Salisbury. I thought of you crafters when I saw the lace from Downton village. It was made near here. Beautiful handmade lace. Also they founded bells here. Made local pottery. And the streets once had canals running through them.

The cathedral close is gorgeous with beautiful, old houses and lots of green lawn.

All in all a VERY good day, but, oh my poor hips!

Came back to see a cricket match going on in front of our windows.

Love to all, Heather, on her bed of pain in the UK.

Heather love the descriptions of your travels. I thought the movie Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson was very well done. What a treat to see where it was filmed. I agree it is a shame about the glass. I love Indian food. I hope your hip feels better soon.

Miriam well said about the therapy.

We rarely get invited to weddings. We have two to go to today. So after eating my lunch of stirred fried garden veggies with a sauce of Greek yogurt and peanut butter with Turmeric and pepper I will getting ready to go.

I will miss Lesley too. Still praying for her daughter.

Hoping to meet up with Toni and Gayle soon.

    Afternoon ladies~
Heather so sorry your hips hurt, but glad you got to see some beautiful things in the process..
went down to see DFIL and he ate like a horse which is always good.then one of the ladies there,(rather on the pushy side but still nice) asked if I was going to the Christmas tree shop soon, wasnt planning on it, but the pizza place we go to is right down the street, so I guess we are going for pizza and then to the shop to pick her up a few things...I dont like going there on a weekend evening, but what can ya do? they dont get out very much if at all so if I can pick up stuff for them, then I try and help out.
made a grocery list, and went through my recipes,, and will go after we go see DFIL in the morning, I personally like going very early before the crowds, because I start having mini panic attacks when there are to many people around...
stunning day here today.. beautiful weather...

Happy Saturday, I am working a short shift today 6-2 as having DGD's birthday party in the park. Hope it doesn't get to hot. It rained during the night. Yesterday was my day off and I didn't do much as wasn't feeling good. Gave in and went and saw the doctor. He said it is vial. We got DGGS a little pool last evening. Took it over and got it set up for him. He was having a ball when we left.
We went to Sam's on Thursday evening and bought DH a fitbit. We have our health insurance from where I work and they are doing a step challenge and we will get $100 on our health card. So had some problems getting it set up, but did get it done last evening. Of course he made his 10,000 steps early last evening. I really have to step up my steps.
Allison--Hope you feel better soon. I don't do sick well and hope to feel better soon.
Jane--I agree, being a grandma is the greatest!! Great news on your labs. I have mine drawn next week for my six months and see the doctor Aug 11th.
Lesley--Sure hope you feel better soon. I know I have been feeling under the weather most the week.
Katla--Thanks for the info. will do both our phones this evening.
Renny--Hi, good to hear from you.
pip--Keep us updated about the eyes. I know you are taking care of yourself. Prayers sent for quick complete healing. I get those cramps in my feet and the side of my leg. They are very painful. DH woke up the other night with cramps in his legs. So trying to make sure we drink more water during the day.
Carol--We are on the Do Not Call list for our home phone and still get them. I asked one time and they said they are computer dialed.
Gilly & DJ--I am also in the group that is afraid to miss something so I always go back and read from where I left off. Somedays I think I will never catch up, but sooner or later I do.
miriam--Sending prayers for you and DS.
Sue--Glad to hear from you, have missed you.
Joyce--Those are big bushes. I bet it will really look different when they are gone.
Toni--WOW, you have been thru a lot. Those boys are lucky to have you looking out for them.
Lisa--Sounds like you are kicking butt big time. Good luck with the cleaning.
Heather--your trip sounds like a lot of great things to see. Sorry you are having so much pain.
Once again I am caught up and out of news. Going to be hot outside at the park this evening, so hope it is an early evening. Keep on taking it One Day at a time.
    Blessings, Vicki GI NE

@DamitJanit Yep we have attendents pump our gas. They did pass an exception to the law for small rural communities, and let you use the pumps after a certain hour, so you don't have people stranded without a way get gas. We are one of the few states that still has a no pump rule. There are many that grumble and say they want to pump their own gas, but the concensus is that we like employing people to do it, and its nice to not get gas on your hands....(or splashed on your husband).....

Today is day 2 of my mental trial. Ok I will admit, I am a loon... but I have been watching that tv show "600 lb Journey" and although I can't relate to jepardizing my body to such extremes, I do empathize with their struggles. So my mental trial is thinking, I have had a gastric bypass in my head. Ok strange, but I am thinking that my stomach is only so big and so I am eating healthy food in smaller amounts because of it. I know its just a mental thing, but I am paying attention to how my body is acting. This won't be a long term thing, but just a little exercise I am trying.

I am a firm believer in jolting the body into attention sometimes. (Within healthy limits now). This works in my exercise regiment as well. Some days I swim like an orca whale momma....(if I have both sides of the lane to meander in).....other days I swim like a dolphin in front of a sailing ship....swift and lean! That usually happens when a swimmer next to me is really fast and I am thinking, " dang it, she is in her 80's I want to go as fast as her!!"

Do any of you use raw, unrefined coconut oil in their beauty and cleansing regiments? I have purchased a big tub of the stuff, and I have been putting it in my bath water, on my face, on my body and wow is my skin really soft! It is strange going on, because its white and really oily, but it soaks in before I get done brushing my teeth or getting into bed.

I am all for doing things simple. I wash my hair and both with Dr. Bonners Peppermint soap. You can brush your teeth with it, douche with it, wash clothes with it, wash your hair and body with it, and oogles more that are listed on the label. You buy it in a large bottle and then you cut it with water...(I just save the last bottle I bought). I like almond oil too with some drops of escentual lavender oil. Ok let me live off the grid and make my own butter too.....and eat granola...but without the bugs!

Every one have a glorious day. Husband and I are checking out the local Goodwill store for treasures.

The shoes I had picked out on that site were bought, so I am back to square one. That site buys from other stores and puts up the items. So I waited and lost my chance...booo...

Hello everyone! I am a retired art teacher on the north Oregon coast. I am trying to lose weight and the other BIG challenge is exercise. Painting while sitting at my painting table or easel doesn't help much. I have 2 grown children and two ancient sheepdogs and a slim trim husband! Yikes! I need a bit of support here. I would love to join your group.

Heather, Does ice help your hips? Or a heating pad? I use ice on my knees when I overdo. I can usually tell that ice in indicated because they will be hot to the touch (bone on bone so friction). At other times ice hurts but the heating pad feels wonderful. With all this talk about the dangers of NSAIDs I am trying to get by with as little as possible now. Before they included ibuprofen in the warnings, I often took 800mg four times a day to control the pain. Now I am afraid to take it so am in more pain (although PT has REALLY helped) and using other methods as much as possible. I have two young girls to raise! Cannot have a stroke or heart attack!

You're in just by posting. I'm an artist, too. What are your favorite subjects and mediums? I like most everything. Don't light acrylics; but, when I was in art school they were just coming on the market and I just haven't wanted to try them again. I like the look you can get with them; just not willing to put the kind of money into supplies that I will probably just hate. Oldest son told me that 'anybody' could paint; but a 'real' artist could draw in pencil. So . . . I proved to him that I'm a 'real artist' . . . drew him a 'turkey' for Christmas 2 years ago, "say what, son?" I enjoy my art, don't do it as a living. Usually I 'gift' my works to family and/or friends. Did a portrait of a former HS friend and he paid me to do it. Painted my DnL's grandmother for her which I will give it to her for her birthday (9th).

I've never taught much - I guess since I am retired, I don't want to get into a position of 'having' to do something on a certain day. Tried to volunteer at my DGD's school; but, the art teacher did not want my help, so I stopped volunteering.

Art is my 'get away' - I do it for pleasure at my leisure. Portraits are my favorite subject, oil and pastels are my favorite mediums. With pencil (graphite/colored) the next. I did not get into sculptor at school, that was for Seniors on a first come basis and I only got so far as to how to make a cast and that was it.

Becca, when we went to Oregon we rented a car. The first time we needed gas we pulled into a convenience store, got out and looked for the pay-at-the-pump thing but it didn't have one. We were getting perplexed when a guy came out of the store and tried to start pumping gas for us. Huh! What is this guy trying to pull? Does he even work here, or is he just trying to get a tip or steal our credit card number. We didn't know what was going on, so we jumped back in the car and went to the next station. Same thing happened. We wondered... Is this place full of petty crooks looking to fleece the tourists? Finally, the guy saw that it was a rental car, and must have assumed we were from out of state so he explained about no self serve gas pumps in Oregon. We still weren't sure if we believed it, so I googled it. Sure enough, it was true. Then we weren't sure if we were supposed to tip the attendant or not. Google didn't help much with that one. So, if (when) we go back to Oregon, do we tip or not?

Patsy, welcome! You live in such a beautiful spot! Tell us more about yourself.

This morning I went out to walk/run and forgot my Fitbit. I was using my C25K app on my phone, so I thought, that's ok, the app will keep track for me. Then about halfway into it the battery died in my earbuds, so I decided to quit running and just walk. I thought the fitness app on my phone would be counting my steps, so that was ok. I walked 70 minutes at about 3 mph or more. THEN I found out my phone had updated that app while I wasn't looking and it had to be logged into and restarted, so none of my steps were counted! I was so upset. Finally, my last hope was to log it into MFP and at least get some credit for it. If I'm going to do all that work I sure as heck want credit for it somewhere. It's funny how addicted you can get to a Fitbit.

Now we are at the lake cabin looking out at the water, waiting for the A/C to cool down. It's over 100 today and about 70% humidity. Pretty uncomfortable. It's only 86 inside so far. When we got here hubby got he other two dogs out of the car and I got Spot out on my side. He jumped out, saw a horse fly, and jumped right back in. Twice. He's terrified of horseflies. Finally I convinced him we were going inside, so he got out, peed, and ran right to the door of the cabin. Poor baby. Now hubby and Molly are asleep on the couch and Bruno and Spot are asleep on the floor.

I hope you are all having a great Saturday.

Back from our "fine dining" meal.
The meal was fine and we enjoyed the food. Pretty standard stuff. The venue could do with a revamp. Stuck in the 80s. Lisa? ! ? !,. !., All in all, a pretty good evening. We got a taxi into town and WALKED back. Go me! I'm over 700 cals exercise today. o:)

Next to the restaurant, in the market square, there were a few fairground rides with extremely loud music. You could just about hear it inside. When we came out there was hardly anybody on the rides. Just a load of noise.

    Love you ladies. Heather UK

Just calculated food and wine today - I'm 226 over maintenance. Will sort that out tomorrow.
Sooooooooo glad I did all that walking.
Miriam - I don't take a lot of ibuprofen because my stomach is sensitive to it. Tend to take paracetamol. If I am really in agony I take co-codamol, but rarely, because I get constipated and it is addictive. Works though. :ohwell: I just think, if I can't sleep and I'm in a lot of pain then that is as bad for me as a pain killer. ( ? ? ? ? ? ? )

Heather, good point. I don't have any prescription for paracetamol or co-codamol so I don't have that option. I sometimes will take a diphenhydramine (Benadryl), an antihistamine that is often used as a sleep aid. It knocks me out so I don't feel anything!

Jane Martin, I can really recommend physical therapy for knee pain. Mine is significantly reduced since I started. The orthopedic surgeon told me to stay off my feet, no walking or biking for e><ercise, just swimming. But the PT, including using a NuStep has made a huge difference. I am able to walk much further than before, and have significantly less pain overall. I can do stairs again! The normal way, not sidestepping down! I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is considering surgery for knee pain.

Sylvia, Naaa, you don't have to tip them. You don't have to worry about the tax here either. When your bill says 5 bucks, its just 5 bucks... Unless you are eating somewhere, then tip away :-) Too funny about you going from gas station to gas station....

Just popping in to say hi. Had three inches cut off my hair on Thursday (up to the hairline in the back)--should have had it done BEFORE the surgery! So much easier to wash and dry. Yesterday was work, lunch, nap, dinner, and bed. The end of a long week. Today was my first trip out of the house for pleasure. Went to CVS to get some riot touch-up to get rid of my skunk streak and to a local plant/veggie/fruit selling place who had all of their plants on sale. Bought two very large peach/coral geraniums for the patio and a huge cantaloupe. Got a reimbursement check from the insurance company for $105 for overpayment for prescriptions. Prayers answered for the extra gas money I needed! So, there are three days in a nutshell. LOL
