Is the Monster Dash HM one of the Team Ortho races? I did their Chicago Monster Dash in 2012, and I still love/wear the jacket I got. Team Ortho races have the best swag (see also: windbreaker finisher's jacket for Minneapolis Marathon)!
Yes, it's a Team Ortho race. As @Elise4270, you get a full zip hoodie for signing up and a stained glass medal for finishing. They have EARLY packet pickup and I've had my hoodie for a month, but I don't feel right wearing it until I finish the race. I'm thinking about giving my medal to my brother-in-law, since he was the one who got me running in the first place.

I haven't run since last Wed (wed or thurs) but I'll be out this week and then I think on Sunday- down to 2 run days a week and back to lifting.
Yesterday was my first lift after almost 3 weeks off- felt rough- but good. Glad I'm walking today for sure!!!0 -

Not a bad pace for me today, but my legs felt like bags of sand. This is my fourth monthly challenge, and I had hoped it would start feeling a little easier by now! Maybe that isn't the way it works ... maybe it always feels about as difficult, while you steadily get faster, or go farther, or get lighter?0 -

I completed week 12 day 1 of 10k training today. I've been struggling with tight muscles and a little soreness this week but other than that it's been good. I'm running a 5k this Sunday so I'll be sure to stretch and take it easy leading up to it.
I think I need to add some sort of lifting or strength training if I want to continue to run more miles. Since I started increasing my miles I've had soreness, tightness, etc. even though I'm following a program and taking it slow. The other day my doctor told me to stop running and find some other form of exercise since "running is bad for the body." I have no intention of stopping since I enjoy it so much but it does get frustrating that I seem to feel "hurt" quite often.

@kristinegift The afternoon run being the faster run out of morning/afternoon runs is funny - I find the humidity here in the afternoon's can be a killer, yet the few times I've run just a few km's in the afternoons I feel like death from the heat, yet get home to find I ran at a faster pace without meaning to.. Might have to start running more in the afternoons!
@Stoshew71 Good to know about the warm up too.. and I think maintaining my pace is the most important thing. A friend was saying how easy it is to run at the same pace as everyone else and then you burn out.

@Elise4270 That is really cool that you get a medal and a jacket for running the race! I don't think many of the races over here offer medals unless you place in the race or in your age group. I've been told at the end of this weekend's run we will get a pack with some things in it, but not sure what just yet.. It will be like a prize!0 -

Well, I didn't end up doing an afternoon run yesterday. Just did not feel like it. But I daydreamed about biking all through my afternoon seminar today, so I came home and loaded up my Hulu app and went to the apartment gym for a bit of cross-training! Felt good to do something besides run, and tonight I'm doing a bit of yoga as well so hopefully I'll be nice and limber for my speedwork tomorrow morning.

I'm doing a 10k monster dash by team Ortho in Dallas the 31st! The finishers medal is stained glass and we also get the full zip up jacket.. I love my stained glass medal! And the zip-up jacket is probably my favorite piece of swag. It's so versatile! But @Elise4270, I didn't know Team Ortho had races in Texas too! That's awesome! I am jealous of you and @7lenny7 that you get to do some Ortho races... none have made it this far east (yet).0 -

@kristinegift, it looks like Team Ortho only has races in Minnesota, Texas and Chicago.
Next Year I'm tentatively planning on doing the Get Lucky race (7K or half...not sure yet). The Polar Dash is also a possibility (10K or HM) but it depends on what I have planned for the night before. The Get Lucky had a zip-up hoodie last year and the Polar Dash will have an embroidered thermal long sleeve shirt.
The Polar Dash also has the options of doing the Yeti Challenge (doing the 10K, 5K and 1600M consecutively) or the Super Yeti Challenge (HM, 5K, and 1600M). If you do either of those you also get a medal for each of the three races, plus the Yeti Challenge medal, plus a Yeti hat.
All races include a beer at the end.

@kstar_lee, people at races tend to be pretty awesome! Runners are a "brotherhood" like motor bikers! And if you tell people it is your first race, or you are nervous, or give them ANY reason to rally around you, they will! My party trick is to say I am really far from home and everybody feels sorry for me LOL (I live in New Mexico and we have very few races here, so I usually fly to races in places I would like to visit, so I AM always far from home - and the South African accent does not hurt LOL!)
You guys are seriously motivating to me! Thanks for that. It is equally awesome to share in the first race experiences of the newer runners and the amazing experience and numbers some of the more serious runners are posting!

@kstar_lee, for me one of the highlights of a race is the social aspect and I'm usually an introvert. I'm sure there are some jerks out there, but all the runners I meet are friendly, helpful, and super supportive...much like the folks in these monthly challenge threads.
I like to arrive early in part to just talk to folks. I've also had many conversations during the races, but you will find some runners don't want to talk while they race, and that's totally understandable. One of my favorite moments was during my first 10K (which seemed like it too forEVer) when I ran with and was talking to a retired teacher for the last couple of miles. She had started running in her late 50's and was gave me a lot of inspiration.
The runners are great, the volunteers are great, the spectators are great, and you will have a GREAT time!

@kstar_lee Races can be addictive! The folks are super nice. Everyone is cheering for you, and you feel near famous just for being out there personally supporting the cause. The energy is contagious, and you'll likely be faster than you ever thought you'd be.
Like @SAfricaChick said "brotherhood". I don't know if great people run, or if running makes great people - there's a kindred spirit amongst them/us.

You guys have been so busy posting about all the good work you've done, and I cannot even imagine reading all posts before the weekend with all the work I have to accomplish. It just got so busy so fast. But, I was able to squeeze in a run today. I was really happy to have done it. Now have to go tend to the 7 and 4 year olds
10/1 4.75 -- I would like to do 6+ miles in the coming days, so, am resting tomorrow!
10/2 rest day
10/3 6.51 -- first 10k, longest run (time), and farthest run (distance)
10/4 rest day--this was a horrible day, could not get any exercise done and felt miserable
10/5 no running, but good elliptical workout
10/6 5.53 -- excellent run. the weather was cool and crisp, my muscles cooperated and all went well
10/7 3.11 -- recovery run? that's what i thought of this one. felt good though!
10/8 5.61 -- very good run.
10/9 3.11 -- a little over 9 minutes mile pace!

10/12 rest, great elliptical session
10/13 6.52 — very nice run: farthest I went since i started running; fastest 10K (well, second and faster at 10:33 per mile.

My plan is to keep this week light (no extra-long long run) with 10K on Thursday, light strength and a couple miles on Friday and rest on Saturday.
I am not typically a street-runner, so my times always surprise me--one way or another! I'm hoping for 11:30 average or better, since this will be the race that determines my starting place for the Disney Princess HM in February.

I am sorry but I am too tired to go back and figure out everyone and everything I wanted to respond to.
So I will just say congratulations to everyone who raced in the last week! You all did great and for @msf74 I am just amazed you could run!
@snha - my resting HR is around 35 and it is not unusual for it to be in the low 40's when I am up and walking around. It has always been low and has gotten lower when I started running and getting in shape.
@ACSL3 - were you stationed in San Diego last year? This will be my third time to run the Holiday Half there.
@7lenny - I love the video of Kady!
@kstar_lee - I have found the people at races are awesome and so very supportive, including the other runners and volunteers (be sure to thank them for being there). Don't be afraid to let them know it is your first race - they would love to help you be successful.

I finally bit the bullet and committed to the garmin marathon II heart rate based plan for Disney, which had me do an easy run this morning, and an interval workout tonight (10 minute warm up, then 3 - 15 minute/2 mile repeats w. 90 sec rest in between). I had initially shied away from their plans a few years back as my long-easy pace runs were too slow to get me through enough mileage (as a 3 hour Zone 2 workout would only get me through 14 miles when I started out). Still, the plans started making more sense now that my paces have improved, I can load the plans on my watch, I need more motivation to do more race pace runs and speedwork, and the Florida weather won't give me heatstroke from speedwork. Although I'll miss adding up the Hal Higdon distance based runs, I can always use the post-run cool down period to end the runs on a full mile or half-mile mark to simplify calculating my mileage.

10/3 - 4 miles (pace run at 1/2 marathon speed)

pain pain pain! if yesterday my leg was a little bit annoying, this morning it was really really really causing me trouble. still that feeling of having something hard at the back of the quad (biceps femoris if I can interpret right google pictures). for the first couple of km I couldn't extend the leg properly, then it got flexible again, after ~7k I was quite ok thanks to god. but then the trip to work (1h20m commuting) was agony again, I'm so fed up with this but I don't have any alternatives at the mo - for this, it must be my driving position that is causing the pain, I'm fine after. no painkiller though, just want to fell how it is going to develop, don't want to mask something that could lead to an injury
anyway, nice HM in windy and rainy conditions, but with my new head torch (I didn't know knuckle lights exist!) - the petzl tikka rxp. BRILLIANT. comfortable, stable, a mini sun on your head, I have finally sorted my darkness probs ( I wish! ) - I strongly recommend it if someone needs a light to run/walk in the dark. I think I even blinded cars lol, cause they were lowering their high beams and behaving properly today
at least 10 deers crossed my way, and 2 "run" in front of me for a while and the light is so powerful even in dynamic mode (it adapts to light/dark condition saving battery) that I could see tens of sparkling lights in the fields (foxes, more deers, badgers, lions and elephants )
pace was similar to last week's one, so I'm gradually back to my usual standards, I do hope my leg gets sorted soon (yes, I know I should rest but I'm stubborn)
tomorrow 10k recovery run, don't feel like pushing and do my usual quick 10k
I registered for the Berlin marathon 2016, will know in December
