SometimeAuna01;34332671"]Just wonder if anyone else has experienced this. On Friday I got adjusted, I was feeling a bit tight in my low back and the chiropractor also said my hip was out. I then went home to run and the run was off, I was feeling discomfort though my whole left leg. My knee swelled a bit afterward, and started "clicking". Not unusual I have had 3 ACLs reconstructions on that leg. It has been months since it swelled and currently the knee is not hurting me. The last time this happened I have a bone out of place in my knee so I am not too worried about it. What worries me is my foot.
I now have this weird pain in my foot (rear outside of foot and sorta radiating to the outside heal there as well). I will be fine in the morning but about a mile into walking the dog it is back and it is back all day long. Pain is not there when I sit or ride a bike but if I run or walk it is there. There is no swelling or bruising. My fear is a stress fracture but having never had one I don't know. There is no pain when I push on the area or rotate my foot. Does this sound like anything anyone has had?
I am going to the chiropractor today to see if there is anything out that could be causing this. I am trying to figure out if rest is the way to go or if I should go ahead and visit the doctor. [/quote]
The foot sounds similar to a subluxed cuboid. This happens to me. I must land on the outer part of my foot or roll to the outside. Your chiro should be able to help there. Im my experience, if my hip's are out, I should take it easy for a few days. It will throw off my gait.
Good luck. Maybe see a physical therapist. Mines helped with many hip alignment issues. Aometimes it more than just cracking you back into place.0 -
@9voice9 - I would go cautiously on the white running tights. As most women know white tends to ummm become more see thru when it gets wet. Maybe dark with a good reflective stripe would be better?
Hadn't thought about that, but I always wear shorts over the tights, so.... Gotta make sure to keep @ddmom0811 in mind when I'm dressing....

Only just joined, so I'm going to aim for 30 miles for the balance of the month.0

This one is for those of you that think the miles that you are doing isn't worth the miles that some of us more experienced runners are accumulating. It's from a RW article I just saw. Thought of some of you guys.

This is awesome! I love it! We are all runners, if we run one in every 5 minutes or train for an ultra!!0 -

Thanks to some MFPals, I am way less negative about my race now than if I had posted this morning right when I got done. Initially, I was disappointed by my time because I had been so dead-set on 1:40 or faster. But as several people reminded me: Baltimore is a hard course, and not every race can be a PR, and 1:44 is still a good time! Plus, both my fall HMs have been well under my 1:45 top-goal for the season, so I can still walk away a winner in my book.
Generally, it was a good race: Baltimore is a fun race overall, and it was perfect conditions for a HM. But today was also a good lesson in humility. I sort of approached this race willy-nilly and didn't respect the challenges of the course or the distance. I didn't sleep well all week (not even the 2 nights before!); I didn't eat enough food at all on Friday let alone enough carbs (I had half a plate of sweet potato fries for dinner at a restaurant at 8:30 pm... not good!); I wasn't mentally checked-in and thought it would be a breeze; I had two hard weeks of training that I should have recovered from better; didn't use the port-o-potty one last time so I had to pee THE ENTIRE TIME (torture!); I went out WAY too fast (I was pacing 7:26 at mile 5, and 7:45 by mile 9, and ended up pacing 7:58 overall). Some of these things were in my control and some were not, but please, learn from my dumb, arrogant mistakes! Respect the distance, whatever you're running, and make sure you're (as) prepared (as possible) whether it's your first race or your zillionth!
Hope everyone else is having a good running weekend and I'm the only one getting schooled by the Humble-Gods

ETA: I did manage a 45-second 10k PR during my HM before I burned out. So that's a silver lining!
Thanks for sharing your lessons! There is a lot in there for all of us! My Jazz HM in New Orleans is now less than 2 weeks away, so all of these reminders are very helpful.
And that is still a VERY respectable time!! Congrats!0 -

I didn't care about the time (3:39:20 in the end, considering I sort of pulled a muscle in my bum on Thursday and I was terrified I was not able to move, its not bad at all for a first marathon for my expectations) - it was great to be supported by the Amsterdam people, to give the high five to the kids, to overtake the smart guys that run at sub 3h for the first half and then they are out of breath in the last miles eheh. Now time to celebrate!
Congrats that is awesome! And a great time for a first anyway!!0 -

Marine Corp 10K is this Sunday! Really excited to get out there. My speed has been good lately, so I'm hoping for a PR. Planning on sticking to my normal run schedule this week, but with a light strength day on Friday and a total rest day on Saturday.

It's All Good
Forget about comparisons to other runners. Every mile you run is a symbol of accomplishment.
By Jen A. MillerTuesday, May 20, 2014, 9:27 am
"We are famileeee!" the silver-haired volunteer yelled, singing along with Sister Sledge's disco classic as it pumped out over two speakers. He was standing on the side of Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, swiveling his hips to the beat, and holding out a plastic bottle of water for me.
It was 6 a.m., and I was on mile four of a 12-mile long run on a summer morning thick with humidity. Sweat rolled down my legs and pooled in my shoes, making them squish with each step. To cope, I'd been taking a walk-and-water break every mile, and my bottle was already nearly empty. As I ran past the sashaying volunteer, he begged me to take a bottle, "Please, we have plenty." I longed to take it, but I shook my head. I wasn't part of his race. I hadn't paid for it.
"His" race was the in24 Philadelphia Race Challenge, an ultramarathon in which 300 runners run the same 8.4-mile loop as many times as they can in a 24-hour period. By the time I hit Fairmount Park (which organizers left open to all runners), participants had been on their feet for 20 hours.
My watch beeped: Time to walk. But I pushed on, suddenly self-conscious about the effort and ambition of the racers around me. How could I walk when they'd been running for nearly a day? They were covering 75, 100, 125 miles (the winner would run over 155). They deserved the walk breaks, the water, the "We Are Family" serenades. I was just doing 12 miles.
Hold on. When did 90 minutes of sustained running become "just"?
Seven years ago, I didn't run at all. Not until I got a writing assignment to work with an online coach for what I figured would be a humor piece about forcing an anti-runner to train. My first time out, I barely completed a mile. Eventually, however, I knocked out a 5-K, then a 10-miler, then a half-marathon, and--you see where this is going--finally a marathon. The road became a place I could work out a knot in a relationship, fix a work problem, or wonder at will about topics like what, exactly, my dog enjoys about rolling in goose poop.
But the more I ran, the more I lost sight of my accomplishments and began comparing myself to other runners. I'd call myself a slacker if I didn't run as fast or as far as other people. That day in Fairmount Park, I realized I'd gone from thinking of a mile as a feat deserving of a dance party to refusing water on a dangerously hot day because my workout wasn't worthy.
No one running 12 miles through a swamp at 6 a.m. is a slacker. I took my walk break, and turned around at my halfway point. Every exhausted racer I passed said, "Good job," or "Good morning," or offered me a weary smile. They weren't judging me, so why was I? Their goals weren't mine, and I'd be running on days they rested. I didn't need to run endless loops around a park. I needed to get in 12 miles as part of my larger goal of running a marathon in October.
I approached the aid station again. Same dancing volunteer, same blasting music, except this time it was Sugar Hill Gang's "Apache."
"Hi hooooooooo silver!" he called out in time with the song, pointing two bottles of water at me.
I took one of the bottles. And I ran/walked/ran home.
I love this! My competitive nature doesn't always allow me to be proud of my own accomplishments, but I'm getting better. It was a good read for today since I've been down with yet another injury for the past week.0 -
Since doing these challenges... how do you say it... I'm cranking out the miles, pounding the pavement, running the streets, in beast mode? Say what you will it's October 19 and I'm at 76%

@skippygirlsmom and @gabbo34 I'm going to buy a few more long-sleeve wicking tees to layer. The jacket is nice the first half mile or so, but then way too much, and the tshirt under it isn't enough. I like the gloves--I think I'd really like handwarmers!--and then hate them once my hands were warm, lol. I also like the idea of a headband. I like my ears to be warm, but I also want the heat to escape from the top of my head.

@auna01 what @stoshew71 said is so true. The end of 2014 I literally went from 140 miles a month to zero because of a pain in my leg that went from my butt down my knee and would make my foot numb. Orthopedic wanted to do surgery and said "no more running EVER". PT (who is a runner) said "I'll have you running pain free in a week". Two months after seeing the PT I ran my first half marathon pain free. By the way I stopped to see him after my HM and he was so happy to see me and my medal then sat me down to discuss me, how was I during the race, did I have any pain, what was my training mileage before etc. THAT is the type of person you need to see.
@5beautifuldays like someone else said it's all trial and error when it comes to dressing for the cold.
@vteichert welcome!0 -
I haven't been on much the past few days as football has taken over my weekends but I was able to get a great run in on Saturday. Somehow I've gotten into the habit of having 2-3 drinks a night the past couple weeks - I think the fall weather and football season make me crave it more. I've noticed that even having just a couple drinks makes me feel less than enthused for my workouts the next day. I'm going to cut it out this week and see if it makes a difference in how I feel when I run.

Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend!
My ankle is good so I am adding 2.27 miles from this morning. I really need to stop hurting myself.

No time to really read and catch up with everyone. Busy, busy weekend and now I am heading to Dallas for work. Hopefully I can read through and catch up tonight in the hotel. Also hoping to get in a few treadmill workouts while I am there if the schedule allows. Might even get to meet up with @Elise4270 which would be awesome!
Congratulations to everyone who was racing this last weekend! I am excited to read about how you all did!

I'm back!
I had a 6 day period where I didn't do any running. I just had too much to do to get ready to take my son deer hunting, and then of course there was the deer hunting itself. I thought I might get in some runs after we got back to the motel, but there wasn't enough time and I decided I'd rather hang out with the kid. I guess I ended up with a drastic cut-back week.
We were unsuccessful getting a deer but we had a great time and will try again next year. We got back late Saturday and with most of the gear still in the truck I quickly went out for a 5 mile run. I followed that up with a 15.1 mile run yesterday, the first half with Kody, the second half alone. It felt great to be back on the road again, though I'm not sure how this will affect my training (HM in 12 days), or how/if I should adjust my planned taper. I think I'll try to increase my planned miles this week but stay with my light miles next week.
There's no way I'll make my goal this month and with an HM on the 31st I'm certainly not going to push it. 120 miles is more like it now. No regrets though.
Lots of posts to catch up with! I'll plow through those in the coming days.

@kareF the 10k was great thank you. Lovely route by the river and along some tree lined paths. It was one of my friends first ever race and she was quite emotional when she crossed the finish line. She had a similar experience with running to me in that she had been put off it for years after upsetting experiences at school. She put those demons to rest when she finished and is now keen to do another race.
My pre race strategy was a complete farce though. Having come down with a cold on Friday I still decided to go out drinking and I swore to my wife that I would be home by 10pm at the latest and tucked up in bed. At midnight I was still out, drunk as a lord, and eating a Double Whopper...
This meant I was late getting up for the race, didn't have time for breakfast, was dehydrated and spent the first half of the race trying not to throw up or fall face first! I felt good by the second half of the race but my pacing ultimately was all over the place. Live and learn I guess.
Anyway, my cold has knocked me back a bit so I doubt I will get much running done until later on this week so I will probably sulk for a bit...

Pretty decent article on newbie running mistakes:
http://running.competitor.com/2014/06/training/new-runner-5-common-mistakes-newbies-make_106461
I'm sharing this with a coworker. She doesn't understand why my first year of consistent running I will not attempt a marathon. It's on her bucket list. It's on my long term list only after I have reached shorter distance milestones and the desire has to be there. Thanks for sharing
I can't imagine how little you know in your first year of running to even think of that- I'm just at a point where I would vaguely consider it- and even then- the sheer volume of training I'm not sure I'm prepared for mentally.
When I got into running I scoffed at even attempting a half. Once I saw that was possible for me, I figured I was at least 3 years away from attempting a full.
Now, after building up to 18 miles while training for my half and still feeling great, I'll likely try to do a full next year. The Twin Cities Marathon is the first weekend in October, has a great route, and is timed well for me to train for. The biggest trick will be to make sure I can get the miles in while not neglecting my family.

10/19-4.36(I forgot I had to run today. I need to stretch.)
@Stoshew71 That's a great article. I do that to myself. I never thought I would have a goal of running 95 miles.
@skippygirlsmom I'm sorry. I love music. That Soul Train line is awesome. When my fro gets bigger, I'm dancing like that at work. I've already warned my manager but I need a block out the sun fro first.0 -
You guys! I literally cannot believe it. I just ran nearly 2 miles straight for the first time in my life. 13 min mile but whatever I did it, loved it, and felt like I could have kept going.
I feel like a champ! Lol

I'm impressed you got to the race at all let alone ran it. Oh yeah and I'm so going to use the phase drunk as a Lord in the future!
@shanaber and @elise4270 how cool if you met up in Dallas!0 -
@skippygirlsmom - oh my gosh on the energy drink! I don’t use them and don’t know much about them, but that is downright scary it caused such problems in a young person.
@patrikc333 - WOW! That is an amazing time on marathon!!!
@gabbo34 - yes, same awkwardness if I’m at a race alone. Would be cool if we can find a place where many could meet!
@5beautifuldays - Nice picture! My husband went to George Mason also. Great PR!
@tdbernrd - Those dance moves look like an exercise. I remember soul train…. in DC area it was the only thing on TV I think on Sat or Sun afternoons…? Forgot which day.
@9voice9 - lol, yes, please just be visible to cars and not making everything else visible.

Oct 19 - rest day!
Definitely need to increase the mileage if I am to reach my goal. Since I'm only running 3x a week right now, it is making it more difficult. Unless I do >2 exercise activities in a day, I can't run more. Although on Saturday morning this woman in the cycling club said she had run 6 miles, then did the 34 mile bike ride with us, and was then going to run 8 miles. Training for a Triathlon she said. I'm strong... but not that strong!

10/19 7.15 I had a planned 9m run. At mile 5, a BIG pit mix lumbered out of (very tall) grass in one front yard and followed me. And followed. And followed. Some of you may remember when Lily the stray followed us, and who is now part of the family. I knew DH would NOT be happy with another stray (and this boy was obviously VERY well fed)...so well fed that I cut the run at about 7 miles cause I knew he was not up to the full thing, but clearly he was gonna follow....I ran back to the park (next to the house whence he came,) and led him to drink in the river.....
Total 51.68
@kstar_lee Feels fabulous doesn't it!?
Ticker is my goal for 2015 and accumulation to date:

You guys! I literally cannot believe it. I just ran nearly 2 miles straight for the fivrst time in my life. 13 min mile but whatever I did it, loved it, and felt like I could have kept going.

10/11 12miles on the bike with the hubby. Been over a year since I have gotten on my road bike. Not counting these easy miles for my total. I'll do my long run in the morning. Time for some football.
10/12 a few miles on the bike running errands.

I'll be out of town until late Sunday. I might find some time to run, but not going to kill myself trying. Back at it on Monday. Have a great weekend to you all and run run run.
10/19 5.98 (34) - far too many beer calories consumed this weekend. I felt it today.

@msf74 - Also count me in the boat of those impressed that you made it to the race, let alone ran it! I had a similar Friday except I went to Wendy's for the 4x4 deal (nuggets, fries, bacon cheeseburger and a drink for $4). A few pulls of Fireball later and I was done.
@kstar_lee - Congratulations! What a great feeling!
I managed to run today after my booze-filled weekend but I was tired, slow and overall unenthusiastic. I didn't run far but I'm glad I got out there anyway. Going to take it easy this week and look forward to running my first race this coming weekend!
