Tried to check in with everyone while in the hospital with my mom. It is harder to do on my cell phone.....

Mom has had surgery to pin and plate her hip. The shoulder will stay in a sling. The morphine is wearing off finally. this is good - it really wreaked her mind. Bad stuff!!!

I will catch up with everyone when I am back home for good.

    Good morning!

Pip - So glad to see that Kirby is home although it would be nice if y'all had heat!

Kim - I got my Fitbit Flex from eBay. I actually bought each piece separately because it was cheaper that way.

Gloria - Prayers for the little one.

Sylvia - Glad Zumba was a hit!

Miriam - That foot looks miserable.

    Alison - Stand your ground!

For an update on the weekend: We ended up postponing our meeting. We knew that the timing might be iffy because he was involved with a fundraiser at this church involving cooking something (turkeys, pork shoulders?) that used his smoker grill. He had to be there very early in the morning to get everything going, the cut-off for pick up was 5 p.m. and then there was clean up. He sounded exhausted when I talked to him. We'll just keep enjoying our phone conversations until we do meet face to face.

Speaking of men...I came across another frog last night. He wanted to "chat" so we were doing so online. He started out by posting a picture of him with his daughter. I replied appropriately and we "talked" about his grandchildren for a few minutes with him posting pictures of them. Then he posted one of himself in nothing but swim trunks in a boat. I pretty much ignored it and asked another question about the children. The he posted another picture of himself in a boat. Then he informed me that he was a touchy feely kind of guy who "likes to hold hands and nice kisses." :astonished: I said, "Lots of folks are. It's normal." That ended the conversation. Yuck!! For those of you who have never investigated these sites, there are some doozies out there! I just hope I run across a normal guy...

I finally made the decision last night that I am not going to my parents' for Thanksgiving. Before the divorce, I hosted Thanksgiving at my house so I've never really spent Thanksgiving with just them since I left home. My son is there and my daughter is going with her dad. I feel bad in a way for not going to my parents', but 1) I really don't want to make the drive and 2) I really don't need to spend money for the full tank of gas for the trip. I have a couple of options if I choose to spend the meal with others.

Well, I'm off to get some work done. Hope everyone has a good day!

Alexander and family--thoughts and prayers for a wonderful outcome!
Going to bring food to Thanksgiving this year -- making homemade crescent rolls which I made last year for the first time to rave reviews. I love cooking everything from scratch for Thanksgiving but never got around to dinner rolls before. The only other thing I "cheat" on is the stuffing. Thank you Stove Top! Someday I will try to learn the secret of home made stuffing.
My first Thanksgiving with MFP and I have no idea how to log everything -- Quick Add and guess-timating?

Janetr- I love the Thanksgiving cartoon. It's true there's so much more to be thankful for!

Lillian-I'm glad that your mom is on the mend. I hope you're taking care of yourself. Keep us up-to-date.

Carol - I don't know where I would begin if I was single. I would definitely want to get to know a person very well before meeting them.

Betty - your crescent rolls sound delicious. I also use stove top dressing. My DH usually likes to add celery and onion to it.

My youngest grandson (8) has pneumonia, pretty sick. Hopefully he'll be better by Thanksgiving.

Jack's brother did great with the skin graft. Praying it all takes hold and heals nicely. On the other hand Mama S struggled. She has dementia which is fairly well controlled with meds, but she was so distraught with son's surgery she could really not function. It's hard to see. She's a terrific woman. She worked for 17 years on a barge on the Mississippi cooking for the crew. She would be on the barge for 30 days then home 30 days. She gets so upset because now she really can't remember how to cook much. It's sad.

We'll head home Friday, praying the weather cooperates for the drive. Love to all.

    morning peep-o-la's -

miriamwithcats - ouchie on the feet-c's
damnit - hehehe, i'll ship him over :0)
godmomkim - starting next week, you'll start to see the riding stats again. kirby is getting use of his right hand again, it's getting stronger and stronger. he's starting to feed himself with the right hand.
lilymay2 - hope your mom is feeling better, you can pass some of that morphine over if you like :0)

when I was running today, I said to myself I was going to take it slow and do maybe an 11/min mi. to see how the legs and shoulder felt with the swinging motion when you run. felt good, so I had up'd the speed to a 10/min mi. and you know when you hear a good song and it amps you up, well I had to go faster right??? so lets see if I pay for it later, lmao!!

Kirby did good for his first day by himself. he's starting to shave and feed himself with his right hand. he promises me that he is taking it slow. the kids are being good and not going crazy on him. he is able to slowly give himself a shower, but I am having him wait til I get home to make sure he's ok and doesn't slip. he said he got on the spin bike at home for 45minutes and took it slow. it hasn't been crazy cold so having no heat hasn't been an issue yet. someone called him and they might be able to come over and look at the heater this Friday, cross your fingers!

    type to ya later.

    Hi everyone
Just been into town to sign our wills, so that's done for now. Will review our finances every couple of years and see if we need to adjust the percentages and do a codicil. I paid for the wills because DH is paying for all the redecorating of the kitchen and the renovation of his bathroom. He's feeling a bit poor at the moment. :'( I might help with the finances for the kitchen after the holiday if I'm feeling flush. :*
My rental sale money hadn't gone into my new savings account so I rang them and they said they had returned my cheque because the writing and the numbers didn't match. Duh! The cheque came back in the post and I definitely had made a mistake. :ohwell: So I've sent off a new cheque and asked DH to look at it to make sure I've got it right this time.
We bought Christmas stamps so I will start on my cards. Because we are going away I need to get them done.

In the solicitors DH was very reluctant to think about LPA. He looked a bit green and upset. I have come away with the forms and will leave the thought with him for a while. Broach it another time. Because we married late in life we have separate money. If he was incapacitated I wouldn't be able to access his accounts. Court of Protection is difficult to get and intrusive. I am not sure why he is reluctant, but it may be bringing back memories of his previous partner dying. :'( Of course, we all hope it will never happen.

    Love to all, Heather UK

    Happy Tuesday ! ! !

    Sylvia
    – Thanks for the morning giggle because of the outhouse pictures. Fun ! ! !

ScorpionQueen – Hugs and Prayers. I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of thyroid, but menopause has been fighting me for several years so far. With my cancer history, I’m not a candidate for HRT, so I take whatever specialty vitamin I find at the store (Remifemin, One-A-Day menopause, Estroven, etc). And I try to drink soy milk, but have not been behaving with that recently. Mostly I just keep a large bottle of ½ frozen water and a fan nearby.

Becca – I’ll see what I can do about the picture, but don’t wait for me, I’m very not tech-savvy.

Vicki – So sorry you have been sick. I hope your body fights it quickly ! ! !

    Miriam
    – Oooo that poor foot. So sorry for all the struggles and the swollen, painful foot. Hugs and Prayers ! ! !

    Kimses – Keep plugging away ! ! !

Beth – Hooray for your son ! // The snow we got over the weekend was only about 3 inches, but the temperature dropped so quickly that the accumulation was heavy.

Joyce – My Samsung Activity Tracker (watch style) won’t sync with my Samsung tablet. Personally I find that stupid, so I plan on calling the Samsung Company. I hope whatever you choose works smoothly ! ! ! // Hugs and good wishes for you DH and his situation.

Glo – An endless string of Hugs and Prayers ! ! !

Lillian – Hugs and prayers for you and your Mom ! ! !

Janetr – Hugs and Prayers ! ! ! So many of your loved ones are going through so much right now. I pray you and everyone finds strength and peace ! ! !

Pip – Such wonderful news for both you and Kirby. Yay ! ! ! Fingers crossed for your heat.

Heather – Hugs for your difficult conversations.

Hugs and Prayers for everyone I missed, too. It is a busy week at work, and if I get distracted I sometimes don't return to the place where I left off. Please forgive my CRS !

DH is still off & on with his new diabetes diagnosis. Sometimes he's careful, and sometimes he looks at me like I'm crazy when I mention him eating something that will spike his blood sugar. I'll just keep offering gentle reminders, and hope a few things stick sooner rather than later.

DS is struggling with his school work all of a sudden, so there will be multiple chores in place of his videogame system when school is completed for the weekend.

We all work through lunch this week, to use less vacation time for Friday. Yesterday I won tickets for "Kodachrome Christmas" at the local Casino, and I will pick them up tomorrow then decide who to take. It is a story written by the writer of the Seindfeld show, so it should be funny. That means I have events Dec. 3, 7,and 8 this year. I just might wear my rhinestone tiara to all of them, since it will be my "birthday weekend".

    Hugs for Everyone ! ! !

Good afternoon! I was going to say good morning, but my computer locked up and I had to reboot, then got the blue screen of death, but it finally went back in OK. I'm limping along on XP, so anything can happen.

I saw something on a facebook group for potters yesterday that really hit home. A woman posted that she lost (in weight) an amount equal to a bag of pottery clay, which is 25 pounds. I thought that was really interesting, equating it to terms that we potters know so well. My own weight loss is equal to 2 boxes (50 pounds each), one bag and a five pound bowl. Now, I am physically unable to even lift a box of clay, which is 50 pounds, so how the heck was I able to move at all with all that extra weight on me? (I would have to use a dolly to move that much clay.) It boggles my mind. No wonder I have had such a feeling of freedom since it's gone. I still have another bag of clay to go. Maybe Zumba will be just what I need to get that going again.

I pick up the girls at 12:30 to take them to their dentist appointments. They aren't happy about it, but I told them they don't have a choice. It needs to be done. So, since I got the power of attorney they have all had their flu shots and the older two will have their teeth worked on. They each need to cavities filled. Next week they get their eyes checked. Progress.

Today I threw a bunch of pots. It was a good clay day. Now I have to clean up and get ready to be grandma.

    Have a great day!

    Sylvia

GOOD! The thyroid can screw with so much going on in your body. Glad that you'll be seeing a doctor about this. Happy Thanksgiving! Let me know what he/she has to say.

Scorpion Qwean - I watched the Dr. Oz show today and there was a nutritionist on there talking about the thyroid and how to heal and reset it. We all need the iodine that is in the table salt. The best way is to put a pinch into something that we eat each day. Which is a very small amount. Eat two Brazil nuts every day, zinc either as a supplement or you can get that from cashews, yogurt and pumpkin seeds. Doing this can also help to speed up your thyroid and help to increase weight loss.

Sylvia - you're such an excellent grandmother! It is amazing to visualize weight loss. You are very inspirational. I lost as much weight as a toddler!

Terri - you have to be the luckiest woman on the planet! I still say we all send you a dollar and you go out and buy a lottery ticket! We are assured of winning! I definitely think you should wear your Tiara!

Terri - I had a fairly easy time with hot flashes so I never tried the following trick. I have a friend who swears that eating 1/2 of a baked sweet potato every day has reduced her hot flashes considerably while soy did not work for her. And YES, another vote for definitely wearing your tiara.

Sylvia - I love seeing your weight loss in potter's terms. I may just have to figure out mine in glass blower's terms.

Terri in Milwaukee- Aw no tech sauvy needed friend:-) Just find a picture of your head the size of a quarter (or a wee bit bigger) and put it in an envelope. Send it lickety split to me. I will celebrate your friendship by cutting it out, embellishing it with pretties, and then putting a pin on the back to attach it on my felt tree :-) I don't dare put up my addy on the thread here, so just send me a request via private mail on here lol.

Mary - The most I have ever won in a lottery is $100, so I try to only buy 1 per week (and expect nothing). But do you think the tiara will be too much if I'm sitting third row? Maybe I can make a cute "Christmas-y" headband.

Becca - I'll see what I can do, then pm you when I have it figured out. My house printer is stubborn, and my work printer is black and white.

Just found your site. I am 63 and I am struggling to lose 2 stone. Kimperry I agree with every word you say. I am sick of my waistline flab and a not so flat stomach. I keep trying not to eat the obvious foods that are not good for me but if I see a biscuit packet open it is impossible to resist. I need help.

    Welcome to another Elaine!!

This is a great place to come for support!

    Elaine in Lansing

Thank you for the welcome. I keep getting lost on all the groups on MFP. I have been reading the posts and I can clearly see the support that is being offered. Any suggestions on what you do for meals would be appreciated. Good Luck to everyone.

welcome.gifElaine If you read all the posts, you'll get a lot of information about meals....we all eat in very different ways....I tend to have the same things over and over and others have varied and interesting meals...it also makes a difference what sort of family you are feeding in addition to yourself....come back often and tell us more about you....what helped me was to make health and weight loss the most important thing in my life for awhile and then to keep in the top five.

Thank you Barbie, I will check the posts looking for meal ideas.

    A little info about me:

I am 63, married, have three grown up children and six grandchildren. My husband and I are both retired.

I weigh 12 stones and would like to lose at least 2 stones. I also attend weightwatchers meetings which are helpful. I struggle to lose weight, mainly because I love curries, chocolate and biscuits. I find the evenings are the most difficult times. Over the last two years I have noticed my waist measurement increasing. I feel uncomfortable and I am determined to do something about it.

I need to get more exercise especially the need to walk more. I use my cross trainer, only 20 minute bursts though. I love to draw, crochet, knit, read and listen to music.

I spend 3-4 hours each day helping my sister to look after our elderly mum. my mum has vascular dementia. It is a little bit difficult trying to plan activites because my husband and I take mum out when she is well enough, work around my sister and also our children/grandchildren. We feel we don't have enough time to do the things we enjoy at the moment. I am sure other people on here will also have similar life experiences.

Hope this info helps. Good Luck to everyone.

Sylvia - Just been watching THE GREAT POTTERY THROW DOWN on TV. Great fun. :D They were making 5 ft garden sculptures. Amazing!

Off to London tomorrow morning. I don't think I will have time to exercise first, but we will be walking around town quite a bit. If I have time I may be able to fit half an hour's rowing in. Got to wash hair, put face on etc. B) Hope we can park ok. The last couple of times we passed by Parkway the car park was completely full. ;) Our local station doesn't have late trains, so you have to change which is not fun late on a winter's night. :noway: At least we don't have a deadline to meet so if we have to double back, so be it.

    Love Heather UK

Just talked to DH and we have changed our plans. Going to go from the local station and change trains on the way home. If all else fails we can stay on the train and get a taxi from wherever we end up. Not the end of the world. :ohwell: Let's hope the train runs on time. :* It means we can go later, fit in our exercises and take our lunch to eat on the train going up. :)

We've been talking and instead of doing a little thanksgiving dinner for the both of us (we would usually do a butterball turkey breast and stuff). we are invited to a friends on Saturday, so if I do the dinner for us, we'll have a crapfull of leftovers then when we go to Numia's (the dogsitter) we are known for taking our Tupperware to bring back leftovers (not bringing leftovers home is NOT an option) that would be MORE leftovers. I suggested we go somewhere for turkey dinner then make our thanksgiving dinner for Christmas.

    good idea huh.

:)Elaine, Thanksgiving is this week in the US so a lot of the women who post are busy either traveling, or welcoming family houseguests, or making preparations for dinner and events that may last the whole weekend. There will be more posts next week....I started on MFP at age 62 after decades of failed attempts to get my weight where I wanted it. I started by making a food plan for the day, logging it in my food diary and then sticking to the plan, no matter what. I looked at my food diary to see what foods were higher in calories and sought ways to replace them with lower calorie/higher nutrition alternatives. When I decided to make losing weight a higher priority, I had to make other things less important. I used to be famous among my friends for my chocolate chip cookies and clever knitted items. Now that I'm not baking and eating for recreation, I am known for other things I don't knit as much now because I use that time to walk or do weight training. Taking baby steps and making small changes got me where I wanted to go.
