In other news, taking a diet break and a few days logging break has me renewed and remotivated. Best thing I've done to remotivate myself in months!
YES- best thing ever...A month ago I couldn't imagine rebooting but I gave myself a looong diet break and now I feel awesome and recharged and so ready!

Loved the post! My trainer put things in perspective for me by showing my weekly login sheets where I jotted down my weight. I did not truly comprehend that for over six months, I have essentially been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds which means I have successfully been maintaining. In actuality, I lost half a pound over the holidays!
I gave myself permission to eat what I wanted, granted that I continue my exercise. Cooking and baking so much meant I was on my feet a lot and when I was watching a pot boil or waiting for cookies to bake, I was marching in place or dancing in the kitchen. It has been a habit for quite a while now and something I did not take into consideration when worrying about whether I was going to gain weight or not. Every move matters!2 -

I needed this. Thanks0

Thanks everybody! I'm glad these thoughts resonate with so many of you! I'm reading through this on the treadmill at the Y now, thinking how many resolutioners are going to be here in the next week and hoping they can be patient and have perspective so they don't set unrealistic expectations, fall into the trap of wanting to lose everything all at once, etc.0

Yup, I take a week off of the gym and eat at maintenance (staying active walking) every two months to rest/recharge mentally and physically. Keeps me going strong!
Great post, WG! Hope it becomes a sticky!0 -
Great post, thank you for this0

Well said, Happy New Year to you and good luck with your goals for 2016, however long it takes you to get there0

While I agree with this, I think it does illustrate the difference between people logging properly on here vs what typically happens outside of MFP when people eat a lot of extra food at this time of year. For those who aren't very mindful of their weight or eating habits (again, I'm saying in the real world and not on MFP), I can see how this gets a lot of people in trouble. One pound of actual fat gain over the holidays would turn into 25 lbs over the course of one's adult life from mid 20s to around age 50. And that's assuming no fat gain at any other point during the year.2

K... I am in....
but might I suggest you make your PP plan into some kind of MLM and watch the cash flow in!

I totally know where those 10# came from ... they started with the week in NOLA at the beginning of November ... continued thru the Thanksgiving holiday, were aided and abetted by a virus that knocked out exercise for about 4 weeks, and were kicked over the finish line by the home made coquito and cookies and fruitcake and box of chocolates & roast beasts of various sorts! Eh - I know what to do, and I am doing it. Would I have changed my behavior over the past 2 months? I might have finished off the last of the coquito on new years eve rather than dump it out today2

Fantastic post and one that should be read by each and every MFP'er

The advice here is log over the holiday and 'pee pee'? Nothing wrong with your advice at all. Makes sense and I will remember to do both. I prefer to exaggerate the drama of over eating at Xmas and use whatever guilt I feel to push harder in the gym. I'll fit the gym in where I can in December too and make sure I...pee pee
The point is to NOT feel guilty and NOT feel like you have to punish yourself in the gym in order to have an enjoyable holiday season that does not totally derail progress toward long term goals.
Perspective and Patience were the key pieces of advice. The other part was tongue in cheek.13 -

Not disagreeing as I said - just pointing out that myself and possibly others like the guilt, like to feel we have to make amends - makes me more determined in the gym. Nothing wrong with your way either mentality is ultimately up to the individual.
I'll make a note to poo poo over the break too
Stick around - there will be scores of threads lamenting "woe is me, I ate ALL the foodz, I'm going to have to do a cleanse/detox/cut my cals below 1000 cals/give up all sugar... to make up for it" in the next 2 months. Most of the people who tend toward despair and drastic measures are not using that guilt in positive ways to inspire themselves at the gym. That's who this thread was written for, to help reassure them that any damage done is likely a blip in the grand scheme of things.
Enjoy your time in the bathroom!11 -
Giving this a 2016 Bump since I'm already seeing a lot of posts filled with concern about overdoing it on Christmas....
I've been on MFP for 4 holiday seasons. I've done everything from restricting and staying within my calories for the big days to saying to heck with it I'm going to eat whatever I want, calories be damned, and in between trying to indulge mindfully but not be concerned if I'm over cals. In each of those years I've never had any lasting impact on the scale that I wasn't able to take off within the first week or so of January.
Hope this post helps some of the newer members who are still struggling to find that balance and perspective...14 -

Good post! Just came from a FB page where everyone was beating themselves up over enjoying one holiday meal. One meal can't cancel out a whole year's3

Excellent post
I needed reminding of this
My sodium intake has been through the roof the last 2 days.

I'm up 3lbs and not worried. I know most, maybe all, is temporary water weight. Today I am logging normal again and I only missed one scheduled work out this week.1

This is just what I needed to read! Thank you!!0

THIS!!!
I, along with my dad, were worried about the holidays and the excessive eating on Christmas. But when you take a step back and really look at it, it isn't so bad. If you wanted to, you could control portions for dinner or treat yourself to the goodies bestowed upon you. Besides, it is the holidays after all and you should be enjoying them and having a jolly time! Like it takes time and a steady progress to lose pounds of fat, it takes more time than we think to gain fat immediately back. And when we get back to motivation, we'll to the water weight and get back from where we left off.2 -

What are you, some sort of an "in a hurry" Queen? ONE WEEK? I thought PATIENCE was our keyword here!
Last year I stayed in holiday mode and gaining till January 4 and had to wait all the way till January 24 before I matched my lowest December weight!
I find that a trending weight app is also quite helpful when it comes to dealing with these "weight increase" issues.3 -

Yes I am an advocate for patience and slow/steady weight loss. My point was that no matter how indulgent or devil may care I have been with calories during the holidays, it was never more than half a pound to a pound of true weight gain which can usually be corrected in a week or two. People seem to have this belief that by going crazy at Christmas they are going to put on 5 or more pounds, and concerned that will be a major set back for their weight loss.1 -
Feels like this could use a bump today.2
