It's amazing looking back on the first day that I was barely able to do 20 seconds and now I am able to do 60.

Something my trainer has told me in the past, being sore is fine but not pain. If it hurts take a break and give your body time to heal. There is no point in progressing if all your doing is more harm than good.
Doing these planks is building new muscle, so you might need a break. In other words be safe. The spine is not something you want to break or hurt.
