Today I woke up with some weird tightness in my right leg that I've not experienced before. It starts at the top of my quad and radiates around my glute to my hamstring. Is this the IT band? I've never had any experience with IT band issues, so I have no idea what to do about this discomfort. As it is, I'm taking a rest day today to let it recover.
Edit: I think it may be time to invest in a foam roller.
In my case IT band issues hurt around the outside of my knee. You might be hurting more in your sciatic or piriformis nerve. I have a compressed disc in my lower back and it presses on my sciatic nerve. Every day I feel pain in the middle of my butt cheek that radiates down through my hamstring area. When I'm running it feels a bit like a hamstring pull. Definitely get a foam roller.
Oh... I wouldn't be surprised if it were the sciatic nerve. I have had multiple issues with that in the past. It was just weird because the tightness was radiating around my leg. I get paid tomorrow; I will go pick up a foam roller and also look into yoga videos.
I'm wondering why all of a sudden I'm having minor issues with my back again, when I went months without any problem. Maybe it's time to replace my shoes? Couldn't hurt.2 -
@RespectTheKitty My low back/sciatic nerve problems come and go without warning or reason. That is odd about the pain going from front to back. Maybe it's just your whole hip area is tight/sore? I would stretch your hip flexor and glute plus foam roll front, back, and side.0
-
@RespectTheKitty Your pain sounds similar to mine. Mine was tight piriformis muscle that was irritating the sciatic nerve. Might be worth checking out.1
-
As the day goes on, the soreness is situating primarily in my quad. So, it looks like my quad is just not happy about yesterday's five miles.
Doesn't help that I sit all day. Every time I get up from my desk, everything is just so tight.1 -

That's exactly what I had in the past. Time to try to remember my old PT exercises...1 -
@atlantarunner my daughter runs high school cross country. Good luck to your boys this season.

@Stoshew71 thanks again for your encouragement & suggestions. As an on-again-off-again vegetarian getting enough protein has always been something I've had to watch. I know I wasn't getting enough before starting to track it here on MFP. I've been doing much better, but maybe need to increase it even more....
...plus the stupid knees are bothering me again despite doing the PT exercises I learned the last time I went. I'm waiting for the new PT referral to arrive in the mail. Hopefully going in again will help.1 -
3.3 miles today (technically 3.33, but I'll let the hundredths go). Holy humidity. I thought maybe I was just dragging and it wasn't all that bad, but my gym buddies confirmed that they all struggled today, as well. According to the weather channel, it only "feels like" 89 degrees, but I must disagree. Felt more like running in a hot tub than I would expect out of 89 degrees.
24.8 miles completed of 40 mile goal.2 -

I was running more or less in my usual easy pace (11:34 min/mile) today but it did not feel very easy. Yesterday, I ran faster (10:43 min/mile) in a route with more elevation and it felt easier. Are my legs tired from the <4 miles of the run yesterday? Or, just that I did not have enough sleep last night... Originally, I plan to run a little "warm up" 2~3 miles on Saturday before the HM because I tend to feel sluggish from not running but now I am not sure.
BTW, @cljoe7, I started running for almost 2 years now. As you can see, some days still feel like a drag for me but, most of the time, the runs are more enjoyable, even the ones that take me 2+ hours to finish!

Hi and welcome to @Marjael
@ceciliaslater You apparently are not getting the weather relief we're getting over here. Bummer. It's still high humidity in the mornings but it's definitely cooled off. Strange August weather we're having.2 -
@shanaber I'm not sure if our weather is really better but your restaurants options are definitely bettermom3over40 wrote: »But here in San Diego, we do get whinny about weather, we start to say "too hot" before it hits 80F and "too cold" when it gets below 60F
BRRRRR! We didn't get out to "the beach" until after friggin' 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and had to pack it in because SWMBO was freezing by 4. And I was playing in the surf, but had to rent a blinkin' wetsuit, and still like to have froze my twig and berries off. And I was still a "large mammal" in those days, so had a well-functioning interior furnace!
Yeah, I was very much surprised to have heard that the water's constantly freezing cold here and not appropriate for swimming when I first moved here. They say it's because the current coming from the north or something.1 -
@greenolivetree - It's definitely cooler than it has been (high today is only 87 vs the 100s we have had recently), but we keep getting these threats of thunderstorms that never materialize. Lots of humidity, no rain. This morning, it was thundering out with dark clouds all around, but the sun was still shining bright. By the time I went for my run, the thunder had stopped, but the dark clouds and sunshine were still hanging around. Very weird. Looking at the radar, seems like Arkansas is about to get our rainstorm...
Looks like they're calling for a low of 60 Sunday night, so maybe we'll have a little more relief coming.1 -

Yeah, Wed of last week we were under a heat advisory but the past few days hanging around 80 for highs! It was sunny this morning then got really gray and drizzled, then sunny again and now cloudy. LOL It was foggy again this morning too. We are also supposed to drop to 58-60 degrees Sunday night. I'm really hoping my leg is better to run Monday morning!1 -

@_nikkiwolf_ I just used that shoe comparator. the Xodus is heaview than my other shoes, but only by 3g, compared to my Brooks glycerin 13, which are the second heaviest and, actually, my current favorite pair. They are about 42g heaview than my Nike Pegasus though.0

Run group: was 20.5minutes out and 19.5 minutes back tonight with target to get back as close to the time as possible (plus a 1.25m warm up and down either side). Was good fun, I came in 10 secs too fast and whole group arrived back within a 30 second window including all the fasties who would have run about double the distance. I might try something similar on a lone run.

Anyone see the new Garmin feature of uploading your own photos as a watch face? Awesome idea, but the pics are totally blurry and dim. At least on the Vivoactive they are. I hope they perfect this idea in the future. But I guess having a more vibrant screen would probably just burn the battery faster.0

@Stoshew71 that's exactly the response I get when I tell coworkers about my morning runs4

ha ha @Stoshew71
okay is it me or is MFP having a math problem. Where I come from 1020 minus 485 is 535 not 1505. Stop adding my exercise as calories stupid.

Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Survive last month before retirement. Train as well as possible toward Rochester Marathon. Avoid putting myself back on the couch.
Today's notes – I ran intervals on a track for the first time in quite a while this evening. Did the 2 mile warmup on the roads, and came back to the assignment of 4 x 1000 at I pace with same time recovery, plus 4 x 400 at R pace with 3 minutes recovery. Went for a 400m lap with a couple other guys, allegedly at T pace, to warm up; that came in at 1:34. Target for 1000m at I was 3:50, actuals were 3:49, 3:50, 3:53, and 3:55. Took the same time recovery as easy jogging, except I stopped the watch when I stopped running 1:05 after the last I interval.
Started the watch instead of lapping it, so the first R interval was added to that 1:05 recovery. Allowing for that, the R intervals came in at 1:29, 1:26, 1:26,a nd 1:26 compared to a target of 1:26. Took the recovery as standing/slow walking; I really needed that to run a 400 that fast. Decided not to run the 2 miles easy afterward, as I have a 20-22 mile run on Saturday that will bring me to a peak mileage for the week anyway and I don't want to ramp total miles up any more than that will.
81º F (27º C) and not as humid as it had been. Running at R pace sucks, but I do it because having to run that fast forces me into good form for running economy in order to hold the pace. Without the ridiculous humidity we had last weekend, running at I pace wasn't so bad. It will make me appreciate running at easy pace on Saturday.

Ok, it's been 36 hours and there's 122 new posts?! I'm calling it a loss. Sorry if anyone @'d me! I'm too sleepy to read through all these posts. You guys are so prolific!
My run this evening was better than yesterday morning's. It helped to have other people to pass the time with. Every 2.5 miles or so my calf would be tight but no pain and no real discomfort, just enough for me to notice and take a 30-60 second walk break. I think that another two nights (tonight and tomorrow) with a compression sleeve and another day of icing and some foam rolling should put me in a good place for some easy but longer miles this weekend. But I'll play it by ear. Not fooling around with it, not with a marathon three weeks out!
After our run today we had a fellow group runner/podiatrist give us a Q&A session about feet. It was very informative. I had her look at my right big toe and apparently what I think is normal "Runner foot problems" is actually, "You should come to my office and let me shave that callus" problems. I have a very slight bunion on that foot and that makes my toe callus HUGE, so huge in fact that it's a problem more than a protector. Oops. So that's something to look into.
She also said the best way to moisturize your foot to prevent dry skin, cracking, etc. is to coat it in Crisco, put it in saran wrap and then in a sock, because your body absorbs moisture through fat better than through water-based stuff like Vaseline. Good info I thought I'd share!
Upcoming Races:
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Several Towns, PA)
(10/16: Halloween Half (Morristown, NJ) >> maybe)
11/20: Philadelphia Marathon (Philadelphia, PA)
