I can't believe that people are still even using the word diet. This is a rant but I am willing to debate. If you excessively cut calories and starve yourself and add to this with excessive exercise you will regain any weight you lose. You will waste your life in your head and in the gym.
Just eat enough that you are nourished. Be active, rest and repeat this. If you are doing this and feel crap it's probably not the weight that is upsetting you.
The rubbish I am hearing about cheat days and 1200 calories and no carbs is ridiculous. Seriously. I love you all but the food and body is not the problem. It's a problem you have created to avoid another problem.
Energy balance and trying to enjoy everyday. Do not give the pass anymore of your time and expect no less then a positive future. This is the bit you should focus on. Not the amount of cals in your coffee.
Rant over. I am actually a nice guy but seriously I feel like I am in the matrix with some of you.

Wow, for someone with 15 posts, you sure know us all so well.38

Diet does not mean eating 1200 (it can, but doesn't necessarily). It can mean simply "how I eat" or "eating less than my maintenance."16
-
That's not debating my point or adding anything positive or meaningful. I welcome discussion. I know it came across aggressive so I will apologise and excuse your tone.5

Lemurcat12 I will look up the history of the word and post it hear but for me I see it as a word that can be used to sell us something. We should replace it with 'eating'. However they can't sell us that.3

Here. Post it here. Grammar police lol.3

There is no one true way.
You find your way to success and let others find their way without pontificating that their way is wrong because it's different from yours.24 -

ˈdīət/
noun
1.
the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.
"a vegetarian diet"
As far as 1200 calories and low carb goes, if it's a female who is 5'1" and 130 pounds with PCOS 1200 calories might be a deficit of about 300 calories and lower carb is usually necessary to lose weight.35 -
Hell...I am getting yelled at for not eating enough. I used to until I started eating better...Now I get full faster and stay full longer. I am 5'3" and 40lbs overweight and I do not exercise. I have started walking but I just don't see the sense in eating when I am not hungry. If I am hungry, I will eat more...simple8

I haven't singled anyone out. Ultimately we are all strangers and I don't expect anyone to stop what they are doing just because I said it. I stand by what I said however. Seska422, I see people on here sometimes ask for advice. Do you think starvation and excess exercise is sensibly advice? Do you think that is right?
I understand that what I said about personal issues vs weight loss might be upsetting and annoying for some to here from a random guy on the net. Again I apologise for that.4 -
As well I didn't prescribe any particular way. I just shout energy balance and being active and enjoying life. For everyone that will look different and as you say will be their own way.0
-
I have seen some crazy stuff on here and so much conflicting advice that I don't know which way is up so I am doing what feels right for me. I feel great eating the way I am and have more energy than I did before. I do like reading the different discussion threads though. I was just amazed at how many people "know" what they are talking about and the next thread I read, the info is just the opposite. It makes things kind of difficult.9

Most people on here do not suggest starvation and over exercising. It's actually against the TOS to promote those kinds of behavior, so if you see it report it. My only word of caution on reporting, make sure you know their stats first because calorie needs vary wildly from person to person.13

Are there specific users or threads you're trying to reach? I've never advocated a 1200-calorie diet (except where appropriate) or no carbs (except where appropriate) or cheat days (except where appropriate - life happens sometimes). I see very very few people ever promote starvation and they're usually shouted down and removed. This looks far more like a rant than any form of debate. If you have a beef with certain posters or threads, why not take it up in those threads instead of dragging all of us into it?
And I'll keep using the word diet to refer to the foods I eat until a better synonym that's as universally understood comes along.27 -
Exactly...most of what I see is people pushing to make sure you get in no less than 1200 for women. I have never seen anyone advocating starving yourself.3

Would you like the number of my therapist? I'm sure she'd be happy to hear your take on my food issues.8 -
"Diet" is really a very useful words. Like, someone shows up with donuts and I say, "I think I'll pass - I'm on a diet." Now I could go into more detail about needing a calorie deficit and the donut not being tempting enough to use that many of my calories to eat it, but that's just silly when "I'm on a diet" works so well.12

Rarely when someone asks for advice here do you find people saying exercise like a maniac and eat next to nothing. When someone does suggest that, usually many people, myself included, will counter it pointing out that such an approach is dangerous and unhealthy both in the short and especially in the long term. More often than not when people are at 1200 calories, the recommendation is to reduce their goal loss per week because more often than not, they are trying to lose faster than would be healthy for the extra fat they are carrying. I hear what you are saying, but I think you are not looking at the many people here who advocate for moderate calorie restriction along with exercise as the way to go except in situations such as mentioned above of say a woman with PCOS who is not particularly tall. Even then, the encouragement would be to exercise more so that they don't have to eat only 1200 calories, and for that matter, in that case or in the case of insulin resistance or diabetes low carb can be extremely helpful.6 -
I am regretting my rant. Ok. I have been on here a few years. I used to log religiously but do not now but I do like to read the topics, recipes, etc but I have become a watcher as opposed to active commentator. Which explains my apologising for comments I now realise will obviously provoke emotion. As many of you have said, everyone's position is different.
I understand 'food/eating issues'. I am very understanding of the crappy grind they are. That is why I don't like to comment on people's threads or comments when I see it as I know there will be many people on here with eating disorders. I really don't want to tell anybody when I see bad bad advice as I understand that my comment is unlikely to have a positive effect on their behaviour. I would rather rather just say what I think is (imo) the most sensible way. But I accept there is no one way. I think you have to do what you can do for the rest of your life. That's why I am against starvation. (When I use the word starvation I am referring to post on here where I have seen people mention low cal eating and loads of exercise. I accept these types are not common.
Dianethegeek, I am sure your therapist is great but I doubt she would travel to England to chat with me3 -
Pam0hio I feel your pain about conflicting advice2

So you just want all of us to give different advice, use different language, and participate differently on these forums, but you aren't willing to do any of that yourself?
It's a good thing my therapist wouldn't fly to England to meet with you as a. That would violate my confidentiality and b. It's insulting to me that you think you know more about my food issues than I or my therapist do.9 -
I promise my next post will be positive. No more rants.
The message I want to share is consistently feeding and nourishing our bodies in a healthy way. I swear this works.3 -
OP, what are you wanting to debate? The use of the word diet? How people use those calories? How many calories people are eating? All I read is a rant about people giving advice you don't like.
14 -
My diet consist of starving myself on a diet of around 3300 calories...........on a cut with not one bit of exercise I don't enjoy every time I do it....
I'm doing alright but thanks for the concert, OP.10 -
I should add that I have seen some really good advice on here to.3

I am 150 lb, 5'4", 42 year old sedentary woman. MFP told me to eat 1200 calories at this point to lose .5 lb per week. If I exercise then I eat some more. I am losing .5-1 lb a week currently. I feel my calorie goal is appropriate.
Do you feel MFP gives out unhealthy calorie goals or promotes unhealthy weight loss?
Is your issue with some individuals setting their goal to lose a lot of weight quickly or doing things like spending 5 hours at the gym but not eating any of their exercise calories?
There are always people posting who want to lose big and fast. They are quickly told to lose slower and safer in every thread I've read.4 -

I have to agree with this. Be the change you want to see in the world. Go give advice. Who knows, you might learn a thing or two along the way.3 -

If everyone had this down pat there would be no need for MFP. Unfortunately, it's not that cut & dried. I, for one, don't use the word "diet" because every time in the past I have gone on a "diet" I set myself up for failure. I have now lost the 43 pounds I needed to lose "consistently feeding and nourishing" my body in a healthy way. I will continue to do so, because for the first time in 30 years I'm in a good place with my weight and my health.5 -
If you are scared of something you are reading you should put it in the freezer. Hope this helps.16
