1: lift (elevator) ghost guy.
I was with my ex boyfriend walking on the ground floor of a block of flats heading towards the lifts. This building had two lifts and they were opposite each other. A we were walking towards them one of them opened and this really tall man with black hair and a white suit walked out of it then got in to the other lift.. at first I didn't think anything of it (apart from in my head thinking "man that guy looks snazzy.. how white is that suit!?".. it was glowing white.. I thought he was on his way to a party or an Elvis night or something..) anyway, as we were getting in to the lift he had just gotten out of we looked at the other one and realised it hadnt moved, it had a window on the door and no one was inside.. it dawned on us that as he was walking towards it he didn't press the button or anything, he just walked towards it and it opened then once inside he vanished.. We both saw him and it was sort of weird but I felt a really calm presence at the time so it was more exciting than anything.
2: Door swinger.
I shared a room with my little sister when I lived at home, when this happened I was about 14 and she would have been about 5. We lived in this really creepy house.. it was just a normal looking house but it had a horrible atmosphere and you always felt like you were being watched. Anyway, my little sister used to have to have the hallway light on and the bedroom door open as she couldn't sleep in the dark (she didn't have a night light) she would always be asleep by the time I went to bed so it was never an issue (I HAVE to sleep in the dark).. well this one night she wasn't asleep so when I went to shut the door she sat up and started crying saying to open the door as it was too dark.. we argued about this for a while, with me standing at the end of her bed (i was being a *kitten* tbh) then all of a sudden the door just swung open really fast then stopped before it hit the wall.. she still remembers it it was really creepy. I hated that house.
3: Frank.
This happened on Friday night.. I was at my friend fionas house and was sitting talking to my friend with a drink in my hand. Well this drink just fell out of my hand.. I definitely didn't let go of it and the glass wasn't wet or anything.. it just sort of fell out.. Anyway i said how strange it was to my other friend and she just laughed and said "oh it's probably frank!" When I asked her who the *kitten* frank was she said "oh didn't you know fionas house is haunted??" Then I said "pfft!! By FRANK!? phahaha" then all of a sudden my phone that had been sitting on a table just next to me went flying off the table and landed 2ft across the room.. I am now more respectful of Frank.

I am a writer by trade and I got interested in the bunches of ghost stories that abound in the area south of Washington DC, thru Maryland to Harper's Ferry, W. Va., and Northern Virginia.
I talked to a couple who had bought their dream home in the Virginia countryside. Weird things began to happen almost as soon as they moved in, but mostly mischief, nothing malevolent.
Keys would go missing only to appear later just where they thought they had left them. A carpet in a long hallway upstairs was found bunched up at the end of the hallway, as if someone had jumped on it and slid, and it had a curtain tie from one of the bedrooms in the middle of the bunch. During Christmas, they put electric candles in each of their front windows. And they would find that the one in that particular bedroom was turned off when the others were on, or was on when the others were off.
These things seemed like the pranks of a child and, asking around, they discovered that a child who lived in the house in the 1930s had died, of carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage.
Since none of the eerie antics were threatening, the couple just accepted their ghost.
But, one time, the box where they kept all their tax documents went missing, just a couple of days before April 15th. They searched frantically, for about a day. But, to no avail. Finally, the woman got so frustrated that she banged on the dining room table and screamed: "Give us back our taxes! You're dead. You don't belong here. This is our house now!"
Someone had told her that ghosts don't know they are dead and, sometimes, if you tell them, they go away.
Half an hour later, they found the taxes box, right out in the open. And they never had any disturbances again.
Later, while researching these stories, I spoke with an expert from the parapsychology lab at Duke University. Duke had a quite renowned and well-regarded lab that investigated the paranormal for many years. I asked this expert: "With all you know, do you believe there are ghosts?"
He replied: "All I can tell you is this: These hauntings/events/occurrences seem to fulfill a need for the people they happen to. I don't know if they are real or imagined or what. But they fulfill a need."
This got me thinking. So I called the couple. And I asked them if, perhaps, they wanted children and could not have them.
The woman said, yes, they had tried for years.
Then she added that they really did not mind having their ghost and that, after she yelled at him, she felt terrible about it right away. She regretted having done it and wished she never had.3 -

Long story, I have a few but this is the most recent
Last year after my hubbys accident I started a cleaning job at a church (with a graveyard) down the road to help out.
I could feel creepiness in the church and when I'd get in my van to leave I'd say as a joke "ok everyone out, spirits aren't welcome"
3 weeks later I was cleaning and caught a black form out of the corner of my eye coming towards me, I screamed and it fizzled out to nothing. But had a creepy feeling on my way home
(My hubby has nightmares about his accident so I sleep with my hand on his leg, so he knows it's a dream.)
That night I woke up with that black form hovering over me choking me. I froze, I could hardly catch my breath all I could do was squeeze my hubbys leg as hard as I could , he finally woke up and yelled at me "what the h311!!!"
The thing instantly stopped choking me but hovered over the bed , and hubby couldn't see it
Hubby said I was having a night mare, at 3 am I was yelling at my hubby that it was evil and tried to kill me. He told me to be quiet and not be so dramatic
I prayed until my alarm went off at 6 .
I got out of bed and went to the bathroom and ran back to our room to show my hubby my neck, huge hand marks with nail marks dug into my neck
Hubby and I prayed for the next half hr that this evil thing would leave our home
It hasn't bothered anyone in the house since but the neighbours one dog has taken a total dislike to me (I've never met it) and snarls and barks visiously at me all the time, it never acknowled me before.
Every time I leave the church I tell who every to leave my van and they are not welcome
Anyone ever watch the tv show The Dead Files? Creepy but I like the history side of it.6 -

I live in an old church. This place is at least 150 years old. It went through 5 different denominations while it was a church. Anyway, things have always gone on here, and you just basically get used to it. But this one night I was by myself on the first floor, and on the second floor it sounded like someone was walking the whole length of the upstairs, opening the doors and going into rooms. It was nonstop for quite some time, and I was just so annoyed and a bit unnerved. So I went to the stairs and just yelled up there "You mother f'er, I'm tired of your *kitten*, just goddamn leave me alone". Well at that moment I was hit with the worst chest pains, to the point where I could barely breathe. So I basically just had to say NEVERMIND lol. Chest pain went away.
I still hear the same stuff. I see things....but it's nothing I let bother me. I figure it's just a part of this old place. If I give them their space, they won't .... bother me or hurt me.7 -
I used to live in a house that at one time had a vet surgery in the front rooms..
Countless nights ..I would hear a large sounding dog running up the hall way and could clearly hear its nails on timber floor ..although hallway was carpeted. We did not own a dog.
Also out the back enclosed verandah I could hear a tennis ball bouncing then rolling along the wooden floor often. I was out there late one night on the loo and I heard the ball bounce and roll to a stop gently hitting the door ...
I sat in there for over 30 mins too afraid to open door ..eventually I did ..no ball anywhere .
I believe there were the spirits of many animals there but the one most prevalent was the dog who played with the ball.7 -
I was working a 4 pm to 2:30 am shift at a book distributor. As I went to clock out, I started feeling dread and I didn't know why. I was part of a skeleton crew so there wasn't very many of us and I was walking to my car by myself. I stood at the front door looking outside and saw nothing suspicious. The drive home was about 20/25 minutes or so and the night was crisp, very cool, clear and the moon was really bright. It was late Nov early Dec. The closer I got to home the worse the feeling got, and by the time I was a few miles from my house I almost stopped my car because I didn't want to go home. I drove on Hwy 42 to get there, which was very lonely and I was the only car on the road at that time because I lived in rural Tenmile. We had an area that we called the new stretch of the highway and when I got to it, the hair on my neck stood up. As I hit the "S" portion of the road and came to the end of it (there's a small bridge and a crossroad that only goes left) or you stay straight on 42. At that crossroad there was a black figure standing there, right in the middle of the road, he was wearing a very long coat and boots and a huge cowboy hat, the moon shining very brightly on him but I couldn't see his face. I should have hit him, but I didn't because he really wasn't there. It scared me bad but I doing my normal routine decide to pull across the road from my house to check the mail as I did every single night. We had a place next door to our house that was an antique/junk store at the time and the Porter Creek store next to it (a little Mom and Pop) grocery store. There was a street lamp right there and lit everything up, I saw no one, no cars, nothing. When I turned to look right to shoot across the road into my driveway I saw a man sitting in a car under that light. Scared the heck out of me and I don't know where he came from. I had my window in my car open so I should have heard him pull up and I also saw no headlights to tell me that someone was coming down the road. I shot across the road to my house, jumped out of my car (didn't even roll up my window) and ran in the house and slammed the door shut and locked it. The next day is when I put in for day shift because I didn't want to drive that highway, at night, by myself, ever again. I finally told a friend and found out that I wasn't the only person to see this figure in the road. Someone else I told said her husband was working in a different area (they own a logging company) and told her about this very same thing roaming the area. I am shivering now telling the story again. I don't ever want to see anything like that again either.6

My mom has experience with ghosts and has seen them many times in the past, but I never did until after my grandfather (Pappy) died in 2013. Pappy and I were close; he and grandmother helped my parents raise me and he was like my second father. My twin sister and I spent each afternoon at my grandparents house, and most of my childhood memories revolve around Pappy, my sister, and I getting into mischief, playing miniature golf and board games, swinging on the swing and singing songs, and watching old movies together until mom would pick us up. The day before Pappy died, my mother Facetime'd me (they were in CA and I lived in VA), so I could see him. He couldn't talk and couldn't move, but when he saw me on the phone, he smiled and blew me a kiss. He died the next day.
I flew home immediately when I heard the news. I spent the night with my grandmother at her home a few days after his passing to offer her comfort and companionship. She and Pappy hadn't slept in the same room for years in the later part of their relationship, and so I took his bedroom that night. It was a southern California fall night, and so the temperature outside was in the 70's. My grandmother had the heater on in the house because she always gets cold, so I was warm in the bedroom as I slept that night. I slept soundly, but I woke up in the early morning to an absolutely freezing bedroom. I was so cold I had to stay under the covers, almost like someone had been blowing a window unit AC all night. I could literally see my breath, it was that cold in the bedroom. As soon as I stepped out into the hallway though to greet my grandmother, I felt warmth. The only part of that house where I felt that intense cold was Pappy's room. I couldn't explain, and I didn't try to. I know that Pappy had visited me that evening, I could feel it. To this day, I know he was giving me the goodbye in person that I couldn't have before he passed.6 -
OK, here's my story. But first, a funny thing. Last night, I found this thread just as my shift ended at work, and decided to stick around for a little while and read some of the stories. Wow! Some weird stuff, and I was pretty creeped out by the end of the thread! Anyway, after finishing the thread, I headed out, and walked over to the gym next door, for a quick workout. As I was unlocking the door to the building, still creeped out thinking about some of the stories I'd just read in this thread, suddenly a loud noise scared the crap out of me -- startling me back to reality! I turned quickly, with my heart racing, only to see a black cat which had just jumped out of the garbage can, high-tailing it down the sidewalk! I found that to be a pretty odd coincidence, considering...LOL!
Anyway, here's the only "odd" story that really sticks out in my mind. I enjoy metal detecting, and so I'm always on the lookout for old homes/home sites -- which are often good places to find a few old coins. A few years ago, when I was back home visiting family in PA where I grew up, my dad and I were out for a drive in the country. I asked him if there were any old home sites that he knew of nearby, where I might do a little detecting. He pondered it for a minute, and then remembered an old home he knew of nearby, and so we headed that way. When we arrived at the old, dilapidated house, which was on a good-sized piece of land with no neighbors in sight, I could tell as soon as we got out of the truck that the yard was too overgrown with weeds and brush, making it impossible to metal detect. Still, it was an interesting old place, and out of curiosity we decided to go inside the house and check it out. The front door was either gone, or just standing open, I can't remember. Many of the windows were broken, but it wasn't a particularly spooky place at all; it was a sunny day, and there was lots of light in the house. We headed inside, and found that there was still quite a bit of old furniture, books, utensils, and various other odds and ends scattered about. It was a small, two-story home; I was looking through some old books in the living room on the first floor (an old hymnal, as I recall), while my dad was poking around nearby in the kitchen. After a short while, a phone begin to ring. It was not a "modern" type of ring, like on today's cordless phones -- but instead it was the type of ring from the old land line touchtone or rotary-dial phones we had in our homes when I was a kid, back in the '70s and '80s. When we heard the first ring, my dad and I both said something to the effect of "where's the phone that's ringing?" We weren't frightened or startled at all at first, any more than you would be in your own home when the phone rings. It seems odd to me, now, to think that we weren't spooked immediately, as soon as we heard a phone ring, but we weren't; it was just like "where is that coming from?" We kind of started very nonchalantly looking around for a phone or whatever, while the ringing continued, but I noticed that I couldn't really pinpoint the location of the ringing -- what direction, or how far away. While the ringing was very clear and of moderate volume, for some reason no matter where we looked, it didn't seem that we were getting closer to, or farther away from, the source of the ringing. We walked out onto the porch, still looking around, and as I looked at my dad's truck, I remember thinking maybe it was his cell phone, or something. I said to him "did you leave your cell phone in the truck? Is that what's ringing?" He said no, that his phone was in his pocket. I realized too, at that point, that it was a dumb question, as the ringing was nothing at all like a cell phone ring tone. It was most certainly the type of ring from an old-style landline phone. It slowly started to dawn on us that there was nowhere that this ringing should logically have been coming from. We looked for a minute for any signs of an old phone line stretching from some nearby pole to the home, but we commented to each other how even if there were an old line, that that wouldn't make any sense, either (the house had been abandoned for so long that no way could there have been any active telephone service there). At that point, without either of us explicitly saying so, it became obvious to us that it made no sense whatsoever to be hearing a phone ring, and thus the "weirdness" of the situation began to set in. We headed for the truck, and we didn't say much else to each other until we were back in the car and driving away from the house. As we drove away, we talked for awhile about it with a kind of wide-eyed "what in the world" tone, but we never could figure out any explanation whatsoever, and to this day, I have no idea. I have driven by the house a few times since, and it now creeps me out to even think about it.
While I know this is not the most incredible story, it's the creepiest thing that has ever happened to me personally. My dad has several other stories -- which we talked about that day -- of much stranger things that he's experienced, but for me, this is the one time where I had something happen for which I could find no logical explanation.9 -
I live in a 100+ year old house. Ghost keeps turning my ceiling fan on - never a consistent speed.
F**king b*stard.4 -
My ex hub and I had a mutual bestie .."Dicko" who was a single bloke that hung out at our place a bit . My ex had gone to school with him.
I was pregnant and he was excited we'd asked him to be godfather. So he kinda took a special interest in the pregnancy ..even dropping by with prawns and lime cordial..things I was craving.
A few weeks before I was due to have baby he dropped by with a musical clown for her and we played cards for a few hours. We talked about the after life and we promised if possible we would come back and give the others a sign.
Anyway the night before my daughter was born Dicko was killed in an accident. His motorbike hit a car on the street 3 houses up from our home. We heard his motorbike go past and the bang ..within a minute the musical clown which was placed in the nursey started playing..
It kept playing on and off for over an hour even though nobody turned the key..
For about 3 months after.. when the baby cried through the night that clown would often start playing ..
I am absolutely certain it was *Dicko* letting us know he was still there.
My daughter was heard babbling in her cot, she was about 10 months old and the musical clown started playing and she was clearly heard to say repeatedly *wink* which was a popular nickname of dickos also..I went in and could smell brut aftershave, his favourite.
I think he paid a good bye visit . Because the clown hasn't played on its own since.

Because we'd had the talk about trying to contact each other..I was scared of going outside at night to the toilet out in the laundry..I kept thinking he was going to show up and scare me..
It was only after a few days of being terrified that my ex said ..you know dicko would never hurt or scare you ..I figured he was right. So then I kind of got some peace from the fact I knew he at least got to see the baby..
I still find it hard to believe he died the night before she was born ....he was like a big kid was so excited about meeting his goddaughter..

On our way home the next day, pulling up to the house my husband noticed the front door was wide open. I check my phone, no alert from the security company, checked the app, the house is still armed. My husband checked every room, every closet, every nook, no one in the house, nothing missing our out of place. Please tell me how a door could unlock itself and open without tripping the alarm system?
I would definitely be asking that same question to the alarm company!1 -
