So two weekends ago I bought my daughter a new pair of running shoes, and told her they were only for running. Guess what I saw on floor in the entry way after she came home from college...yep, her running shoes. I could tell from the dirt she had been wearing them more than just for running, if she even did do any running. I'm not happy and may tell her that's the last pair of running shoes I buy for her.

Maybe she needs some walking around shoes too? Or just bonding with them.

    Perhaps this.

I'm starting to get ashamed of how many shoes I am starting to have... and I just bought 2 pair last weekend because I needed some new walking around shoes and they had a special for 1/2 off your 2nd pair. Prior to that, I bought a new pair of hiking boots less than 1 month ago. Problem is that I never seem to get rid of the old. My old hiking boots have a hole in one of them... I have worn them only once since buying the new, but why can't I bring myself to throw them out? The old "walking around" shoes are now my "yard work" shoes - the reason I needed new is that they are very worn and they are stained from lawn mowing anyway. It just seems like I now have so many shoes - 3 formal (at varying levels of fancy), 2 hiking boots, 1 work boots, 1 yard work, 1 road running, 1 trail running, 1 gym, and 1 everyday walking around / shopping / whatever.

ETA: Oh yea... and a "walking around in house, but not something I would wear in public" pair... not slippers, technically. And I have a pair of water shoes and flip flops. Listing these out makes me feel even worse. It's crazy. I probably should get a shoe organizer.

I can totally relate to this....too many shoes....I will throw the ones with holes away. I have a shoe tree (organizer) but still so many that the organizer can't hold all of them.Like you, my old shoes become yard shoes. Only 2 pair of running shoes thus far!

Say, anyone else collect outerwear....I have quite the collection.. I just drool over a pretty coat.

I have over 300 pairs. Every shape and color and pattern. I have lots of leopard print. I love shoes. I have at least 8 pair of running shoes in rotation and 4 pairs in boxes. I have to stay out of the Nike outlets or I bring more home.

Over 300? I bow to the master. LOL I think I am at about 40? I stopped counting. I have been obsessed with casual sneakers lately. I spent so much at DSW this year I moved to premiere status.

I love DSW but many of mine were bought at Marshall's. They just opened a DSW by me. I have been resisting but I have a frequent shopper coupon burning a hole in my pocket..

A little jaunt along the Riverbank Trails. They were having the S.Claus Parade through downtown tonight so the trails were empty - except for the 2 blocks around the downtown core - Families going in all directions. Once I got away from the area it was back to zero traffic, -5C and a strangely cold South Wind. Still a nice evening for a run.
I had planned on 14km but the Quads were starting to bark at me around km 8 so turned and cut it short at 10km. I blame the tenderness on Final Adult Swim Club in this session last night - one of the last " Fun Drills " was to Tread Water for 3 mins with increasing weights. 5lbs for 3 mins, 10lbs for 3 mins and topped out at 15 lbs for 3 mins - 7.5 lbs in each hand - held above the shoulder. Tried to do the 20lb set but just had no gas left in the tank. Note to self skip the 5 and start with the 10 next time we try this. Now where is that dang Foam Roller! :#

Today a slow and steady run along the bike path near my sister's house. It was 45 degrees so not bad, but the wind across the corn fields was a little tough.

And that brings me to my goal of 75 miles for the month! Maybe I can get closer to 90 for my final number.

My sister and I got reflexology massages today that were pretty amazing! Great work on the feet and calves, but also a pretty extensive back massage. Kind of intense but it felt really good. If I lived here I would definitely be checking them out again, it seemed perfect for running related soreness.

Need to catch up on everyone here. Hope you all have a good weekend!

@Orphia - congrats on hitting 50 parkruns and smashing your PB again!

Went out for easy 5k today. Was 3°C, sunny and very light breeze so was nice running weather. The slight chill meant I went faster than planned easy pace, (close to HM pace). Not much to report - ever so slight twinge in right knee, but I think it's nothing a good stretch won't sort out. Nowhere near as tired as I have been last couple of days. Still in need of my planned foam rolling session later though, and think I may compliment that with a nice soak in the bath tonight - have got some Elemis muscle soak I'm looking forward to trying out.

    exercise.png
    2-Nov: 13.1k - 3 laps of hilly route.
    4-Nov: 6.26k - Planned 11k easy, but cut short as very stiff/tired.
    7-Nov: 11.25k long run.
    9-Nov: 6k fast
12-Nov: 18k long run [Distance PR] Very wet.
14-Nov (AM): 5.1k easy. Wet and sluggish (no warm-up)
    14-Nov (PM): 10k as 5k tempo + 5k intervals
    16-Nov: 8.3k - 2 laps of hill circuit
19-Nov: 7.4k trail run at approx HM pace.
20-Nov: 11.5k - planned 19.5k long run but cut short due to tight left achilles.
23-Nov: 21.2k HM pacing practice [Distance PR]
    24-Nov: 4.4k (30 mins) recovery run
    25-Nov: 6.3k "tired" run
26-Nov: 5.3k easy (actually nearer HM pace than easy)

@louubelle16 Funny story about the watch time!

35F and heavy fog this morning. We're heading to a family event 2 hours away and I'm pushing my luck that I'll get my run in this evening.

@federicafezza4271 You can do it! It's okay if you're not going your fastest, just focus on going the distance. And if you can't do it, that's okay too. Don't be afraid to repeat weeks or do a few extra days of a week until you feel confident to move on. I started running with the C25K program about 6 years ago and rushed through the program because I was too anxious to move on. I finished the 5K I signed up for at the end, but it was a huge struggle and I quit running after it. The following year, I attempted C25K again and made sure to follow the plan carefully, even repeating weeks until I felt like I had it down. I've been running ever since and I returned to my original 5K last year and beat my original time by over 6 minutes. Sorry for the rant, but I love encouraging new runners because I was in your spot not that long ago and know how the C25K can help turn someone into a runner if they want to be. Good luck!

Thank you for all the encouragement! I actually ran 25 minutes consecutively yesterday, it was hard at the end but worth it ;) Still far from 5 km but I plan to reach that goal in 2017!

On the negative side, I had a goal of 80 km walking+running for November but I believe i will only reach 50 km, I had to stop going to the gym for a couple weeks for family reasons :(

I am so inspired by all of you. Your passion for running no matter the obstacles (weather, injury). My goal was 22 miles for November and I'm at 12. I will work on the next 10 miles before November 30th. Keep up the good work everyone!

@loubelle17 - sorry to laugh but that is too funny. Would love to know what pace you actually got up to! I'm just trying to sort childcare but will hopefully also be doing the Dec VeloPark HM (though not as quick as you!) so will let you know if so.

@NikolaosKey - well done hitting your target (and before your HM). all the best for tomorrow!

@MobyCarp - Awesome run coming off your Achilles injury! I love the RwG jacket and shirts and it is always great to get a cash award! Congratulations! Also I really need to get FleetFeet to open a store in So California! I love their events and all the fun things they do. It is crazy to me that there isn't a decent running store anywhere near me - before I started running there were apparently a few (RW still lists them) but they are all out of business.

@shanaber - Do you feel called to run a business? I know the local Fleet Feet owners work their butts off marketing to the running community. They make good money, and the running community loves them. I don't know what you need to do to get a franchise; I don't have the aptitude or desire to run my own business, so I've never looked into it.

When I was running to parkrun, I was conscious of the time to make sure I got there for the start, so had the screen on my watch set to show the clock time instead of my pace like it usually does. I then forgot this while I was running parkrun, which I had decided to try and run at goal HM pace (which is 9:05). Because parkrun starts at 9:00am, my brain thought that what I was seeing was my pace instead of the clock time! So basically, as I was running, all I thought I could see was my pace dropping bit by bit even though I was pushing harder and harder to try and get up to, what I thought was, HM pace. This started off working well, because I was obviously running way slower and thought "THIS IS SO EASY!" but by 9:20am I was pretty devastated, convinced that I couldn't run this hard and maintain it so I was never going to get a sub-2hr HM in 3 weeks - all because I was convinced that, even going all out, I was only running 9:20 pace :flushed: When I realised what I had done at 9:50 on the run home, I laughed so hard I had to stop at the side of the road to catch my breath  MORON ALERT.

@louubelle - So what pace did you end up running when you were pushing and thinking you were slow? I envision you coming in at about an 8:40 average, working your butt off while thinking you're failing miserably.

    11/25 – 5.65 Black Friday Waffle Run
    11/26 – 7.21 easy with fast finish

November total to date – 82.41

Nominal Challenge Goal – 30 miles
Real Goals: Continue recovery. Complete Race with Grace 10K on Thanksgiving without setting recovery back, even if I have to walk most of it.

Today's notes – At the Waffle Run yesterday, I spoke with the Fleet Feet co-owner. She asked if I was back, since the last time she'd seen me I had been crossing the finish line at Rochester in a golf cart. Told her how I was doing, and that I wasn't sure I was up to 8 miles Saturday. She threw out the standard advice, "You know the drill. Come back slowly."

That was just the nudge I needed to be more conservative. The training group's shortest route this morning was 8 miles. I slept in till the alarm cat went off, then was leisurely about getting breakfast. Didn't get out to run till almost 10. 39° F (4°C) and cloudy, with a light drizzle and a west wind that felt stronger than the 7 mph the weather feed claims, but it was really pleasant running weather. By the time I hit the road, it felt so good I talked myself into a 7-ish mile route with rolling hills from mile 2 to mile 5. Felt so good at the home stretch that I picked up the pace when Garmin said 7 miles and went into finish line sprint mode at the last fire hydrant before my driveway, maybe the last 100m I ran.

While this isn't really a true long run, it feels great to be running as training instead of just running as injury recovery. Yes, I still h ave to pay attention to my calves and the recovering Achilles; but there was no doubt that I could commit to a 7 mile loop route with no easy options to cut distance. Worst case, I'd have to slow to a walk after 6 miles and walk a mile home. That turned out not to happen.

In other news, the cheapskate in me got fascinated by a Black Friday deal and signed up for the Greater Rochester Track Club Freezeroo series of races. Yeah, I only saved $5. But I was feeling pretty good about being able to run, and I'm less obsessed this time around with being picky about races fitting into the Boston training schedule. I'll adapt the training to fit the races. And I would have wanted to do Resolution Run on January 1 anyway. So my list of upcoming races below got bigger. I'm thinking I may want to skip Reindeer Run on December 17, just because I've committed to so many races with Freezeroo. Hmm. Maybe I'll register for Reindeer Run after Club Nationals, if I feel great and up to another 5K the next week after traveling.

    My Total/November: 64.9 miles
    Mike's Total: 17.15 miles

Good run with Mike and Fergus this morning. Brought it down to just a 5K today and my hips are thanking me. Of course, within a few steps of stopping I was already regretting not doing 5 miles again. But I was pushing my pace again and sticking closer to 12 minute miles instead of 13 so that is something. I have to keep reminding myself that I am still carrying quite a bit of extra weight and it is hard on my joints. Sometimes I have to reign it in so that I can keep on going the next day. Maybe I will take an extra long walk later. :)

The last time I ran an actual 5K race was in 2010 and my time was around 43 minutes or so and I was about 110 pounds overweight at the time. Gearing up for the 5 K next week, I am only about 65 pounds overweight right now and running much more consistently than I was back then. I'm looking to come in under 40 minutes. Today's was right at 39, so I know I can do it.

@Oberon21 300 pairs of shoes and a DSW just opening up near you...Wanna go shopping? :)
@shanaber It sure is nice seeing the times improve. Especially when it feels so good...I mean, I might not really be moving all that fast, but I FEEL like I am flying sometimes.
@katharmonic Nice job hitting your goal!
@Orphia Congrats on the 50th Parkrun PB!
@RunsonEspresso Shoe shopping is about the only shopping that I can tolerate in person. I buy almost everything else online.
@louubelle16 Funny story with your watch! I have done that as well. I usually keep mine set so I can monitor my distance and I accidentally bumped it into the heart monitor mode once and kept trying to figure out why my first mile went so fast and the next one was just crawling. Glad I'm not the only one! :)
@NikolaosKey Congrats on reaching your goal! Good luck in your HM!

    Upcoming Races:
12/3 Snowball Run 5K, Kingwood TX
1/22 Choco Loco 10K, Houston, TX
