WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR DECEMBER 2016

Hi Ladies. This is what I need motivation and support. I need to get moving and the only time I have been successful at that is when I have had a goal and someone I was not wanting to disappoint. So I am here hoping this will be the place where I can get that. I live in Dallas and have recently lost 15 lbs but would like to lose another 10. More than losing the weight, I just want to lose the fat and be trim and healthy so that means I need to get moving. I signed up for a 5K on April 2 so there is the final goal - now to work on daily/weekly goals. I want to be able to get up and exercise every day for 45 mins aerobic (run/walk/elliptical) and 10-15 minutes strength. I have found if I don't get up and do this first thing it doesn't happen. But I am lazy and it is cold out so I don't get up and next thing I know a whole week has passed and I haven't moved. So that is my goal - to get up and moving Monday -Saturday.3

Sherry - Most grocery stores will split packages or cut meat in an amount you want. At Thanksgiving, a 1/2 ham, was too small; whole ham too large; so I asked if they'd cut about 2/3rd or 3/4th of it so I could have one that was the right size for my family over the weekend. Doesn't sound like you have very much refrigerator space, much less any freezer space. I'll buy a package of several pieces of meat and freeze each piece, so I can take it out and cook it once it has thawed (usually about an hour). Sometimes I will buy a large package of ground chuck, cook it and put in in Ziploc bags in portions so I can make sloppy joes, spaghetti sauce, chili, and stuff like that in small batches since there are only the 2 of us. You just have to ask them to do it. Usually the smallest package is 2 of something. Like the hamburger patties that are bigger than most I make ... so in the freezer with the other for a meal later on down the week or two.
Hello to all the newbies! Glad you have found us, hope you will share often.
Cheri - I don't blame you for putting your foot down about all the concessions the buyers are making, especially since you sold the house at a greatly reduced price. At our ages, we'd never buy again. When we refinanced out house several years ago to get the 'interest' rate way down, we wanted to only do 10 years; but, they only had 15, 20, or 30 years; ... if we could have done 10 - it'd be paid for by now.
I've put the bows on DH's deer mounts; only thing I have not done is get DH to hang large wreath over the fireplace. The picture that hangs there is way too heavy for me to attempt to get it off. It is definitely a 2 person job. I'll have to take my manger scene down. I think it is too large to hang even on an inside door. Decided to just hang it on our bedroom door.

Good Morning my ladies!! (I sound possessive, but I am kinda)....
So this morning I was calling some of my TOPS friends because I am needing a Christmas themed apron. The senior luncheon is this Thursday, and I have my baby blue apron with my little black cat on it. Not very Christmasy... So I go in my kitchen and see my Advent Calendar, and get an idea....
Now if I can just not get stabbed by the pins, (I have none showing on the back side, so I should be good). I think I was very inventive!!
To the ones that were complimentary about my step-father, this is his pic from the Advent Calendar. He was a public radio DJ so he had quite a melodic deep voice, not so much now, but at 80-something, he still is full of vim and vigor!
My Momma's picture is next to him. I always do my Advent calendar faces in groups, (my sons are always together, and my husband's and mine are always together... lol.

BECCA ~ Very nice pictures of your mom and dad. Love the apron.
CHERI ~ Stand strong on your house deal.
KAREN ~ Pat on the back for avoiding the cookies. Most of the time I don't crave sweets at all. But, I have had a couple of pieces of fruitcake that my BnL sends each year from the Collins Street Bakery in Texas. Now that I have had my taste I can resist. Now only if it was that way with the wine...LOL!
I finally got around to vacuuming the house and will mop the kitchen later today or maybe tomorrow. I guess that being retired has just made me lazy. When I was teaching I did it all every weekend.
GLORIA ~ I so admire all you do.

Carol - I'm with you on the Al K Hol. If I don't start I'm good. Once I start .......... I have found low alcohol cider helpful, but not calorie wise.
Cheri - Feel for you re the house. Stick it out!
Yoga lunch tomorrow. I will enjoy the company and not worry about eating a lot. My friend and I are sharing paté starter and sorbet for dessert. Will be abstemious as it's a nice homely pub, but not gourmet. Nothing I can't cook better, much better, for myself.

Can you tell I have the Christmas spirit???? One more pic of our family depicted in felt and hose.....I did the kids ones, (didn't have nude hose so they were kind of pinkish.... I need to make my daughter-in-laws face though....Maybe my son can help me when he comes...he is the artist :-)

Becca – Love the Advent Apron. Hopefully, you won’t get stuck. Maybe get some of those tiny little gold safety pins.
I remember making these little faces with my boys, out of hose that I had a run in. I don’t know what we did with them. I’m sure during one of the several moves we made, they got chunked.
Joyce – Saying my prayers for you. Get well … hoping and praying for a good outcome of the stomach scope.
Toni – I’ve been totally useless today … did not even get out of my gown this morning. I might stay up late tonight; but, tomorrow I’ve got to go get weighed-in in the AM; then run by grocery store, get some gas, come home in time for DOGD to go back to town to get her hair done. She made 3 “A’s” and 1 “B” this semester and the Dean’s List … don’t think we could be any prouder of her for this. She is now a full-fledged senior. One more year until graduation and then from there … no telling. Sky’s the limit!

Hey now.....
I have great news.......at least it's great for me......I asked my PT if she had a decent scale handy and she said "Yeah!" so I had her weigh me.....and I was SHOCKED!!!.....I've lost another 6 lbs since I got my new Fitbit on Nov. 29th!!!!!......so that's what? 3 lbs per week??.......by golly I'll take that!!!!!....I started out at 319 lbs June 10th of this year and as of today I now weigh an even 275 lbs......that's 44 lbs in 6 months and 2 days.....wooooohoooooo!!!!!!......and I realized today I have 3 more days till I have been cigarette-free for 3 months!!!! And I didn't cheat, not even once........that is a whole 1/4 of a year!.....and more good news, my PT says I am getting stronger and that my point score went from 14 a week ago to 17 today ( the point score comes from a set of 10 questions she has me answer by multiple choice answers and each answer under each question has a point value, there are no right or wrong answers, you just answer them regarding how you feel)!.....as I said before, she wants to get me up to like 22 and walking without a cane at all......this shows I am getting there slowly but surely......she is a really good PT and I like her a lot......she says she wants to bottle me and sprinkle me on some of her other patients because I am doing so well......that really made me smile and makes me feel really good!!!......unfortunately I won't get to see her again until the 3rd of January as she is going on Christmas vacation, but she gave me a few more exercises that are harder than any that I have been doing, with instructions to start adding them to the current ones slowly at low reps until I am up to 20 reps for each exercise, 3 sessions a day, until I see her again.....she said that should keep me busy for the 2 weeks she will be gone......should be easy peasy........
Becca - you are so darn creative!!!!! I love the jewelry tree....it's so pretty and sparkly all lit up!!
Heather - my walking is definitely paying off!! 6 lbs in dividends....I'm so freakin' proud of myself......it just makes me want to walk even more!!! I'm sorry your DH is having family trauma, I hope all will resolve itself soon....hugs for you both.....
Joyce - I'm so so glad you are doing better!!!!! I'm with Lenora in asking "Just how did you sneak that cell phone into the ICU????"
Lenora - I really don't mind buying packs of meat with 3 or 4 pieces in it, I just cook the whole package and save the rest for later days.....you're right, my fridge is itty bitty and so is my freezer....it's roughly half the size of a regular apartment sized fridge and freezer.....do you remember the "Lee Press-On Nails" fake fingernails????.....I call my little fridge my "Lee Press-On Fridge", lol.....
Janetr - that would be cool if you and Jack relocated here!! By the way, there is one spot still open here in the park........lol......I love my little Christmasy and snowy town!! Just gotta love the farmers with their lighted tractors!!!!!.....
Well, I should go for now.....dinner is a little late tonight (I'm just being lazy right now) and I need to get it started soon.....WeatherBug shows a winter storm warning for my area starting Tuesday night going until Thursday afternoon, calling for 7 to 12 inches of snow and low temps at night down to 3 degrees!! Brrrrrrrrrrr.......I hope the DirecTV tech doesn't wuss out like the Dish Network one did or I'll never get TV up here except on my tablet, grrrrr......OK, later peeps!........

I was able to dance all three performances today at the assisted living places. I was tired at the end, but no more tired than any of the other dancers. I readied myself by skipping the physical therapy exercises for the day and lying down for an hour before dressing for the performances.
Sherry, congrats on your success in weight loss and strength....your consistency has paid huge dividends. Now that I know that you're doing Physical Therapy exercises three times a day, I'd better stop whining about doing mine twice a day.
tomorrow morning I go for my fasting blood test....12 hours with no food is a huge challenge for me ( but a small thing in light of all the challenges that everyone else has)

Newbies: Welcome to a great group. As you post we will get to know one another. :flowerforyou:
Joyce: I'm so glad you are finally feeling better. Yay!!!!
Sherry: I am delighted for you. You are doing very well and seem happy with your new town and new life. YAY!!!
Barbie: Congratulations on dancing at all three performances at the assisted living places today. What a wonderful way to see for yourself that you are getting stronger and healthier. I'm sure you'll do well with your fasting blood test. :flowerforyou:
We did some Christmas shopping today and I got a bunch of Christmas Cards into the mail. It feels like a very productive day to me. Tomorrow morning I'm set to walk with friends & I have a meeting to attend in the evening. I expect to do more Christmas shopping during the middle of the day. I'm currently planning to visit Amazon to find gifts for my grandchildren.

Morning!! Sherry you are doing so great, wow, keep it up, you are an inspiration.
Went to a lovely restaurant before a concert last night and went for veggies, veggies, veggies--so Delish! Okay I had wine as my splurge and then chased it all with a little espresso, my kind of indulgence!
Today is all about getting to the gym to work out and then taking it easy tonight. Got to try and get better sleep, so no caffeine after noon. Fingers crossed on that one.
Have a great day everyone, NYKAREN1 -
Good morning ladies! I didn't get the sleep I was hoping to get last night BUT, I am up early on my own and feel okay so going to take my dog for a morning run. I am going to try to get a swim in at lunch. We have our running club Christmas potluck tonight, so I need some extra burn. No, running club potlucks are not full of healthy food. Runners love to eat goodies! :-)
Yesterday, I was going to run on my lunch hour but it was yucky out so I was going to use one the treadmills at the gym. Then I decided, since was staying in, I would use the elliptical instead and save the pounding for real running outside. Thirty pounds overweight and just getting back started. I am on a roll and don't want an injury now! Did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 20 minutes of upper body strength training. Dog Obedience class in the evening upped my step count alot!
deannahollis and suede313-Welcome!!
NYKaren - great job walking past the cookies all day and focusing on veggies at dinner. I sat all day at work with a bowl of M & Ms behind me. It didnt' even tempt me. That is HUGE for me.
Heather-I guess you don't like Christmas? I am fairly new here and haven't read all 25 pages of this thread so there may be a back story I missed. I do get annoyed when they start all that in October. In December, okay. Enjoy your yoga lunch!
Sherri-WOW! That is great progress! It is amazing what deciding to make healthy changes can do when you stick with it. I am so happy for you!
grandmallie-Yowza! I am sorry to read vacation is going so badly. I hope things get better, I really do.
CJ-Good luck with the party!

Morning, all...
No word from the potential tenants over the weekend, trying not to read too much into that, but the DH and I have decided that tying ourselves to anyone else for years at a time for income is probably a bad idea, so hopeful that they tell us first that they don't think they can swing it. Otherwise, we'll be telling them we've decided not to lease, and that's going to be an awkward conversation. Oh well. We've decided that, if the warehouse doesn't sell, one more year here will get us where we want to be financially. Really hoping it sells, but not counting on it.
No doctor's appointment for me yesterday, as my doctor called in sick. Weird that it was so shocking--because doctors aren't supposed to get sick, I guess. Really glad she wasn't poking around on me while germ-laden... but now I get to start again and try to get an appointment. Gah.
Up since 2:15 this morning--the insomnia is not getting better. One of the other reasons I wanted to talk to the doc. Got kind of tickled when they called me, as they offered me a "women's health" appointment to go ahead and get a pap smear done, etc. The temptation is always to tell them that, if they can find my cervix, they're welcome to test it, since it was removed more than 15 years ago now. They get all huffy about it, though, and make noises about "testing for irregular cells," and such things. Just see no need to test for cervical cancer (or uterine or ovarian) when those are some of the few things I'm genuinely NOT worried about. When they did my hysterectomy, they evicted all of that, and bless the doctor that did it. Changed my life, when I was literally 300 pounds AND anemic from all the blood loss--sixty-day-long periods are no joke, and I don't miss them even a little.
Joyce, my dear - thinking about you, glad to hear you're being transferred to a regular room--that's a long time to spend in ICU. Thank you for updating us.
Beth - so sorry about your mom's diagnosis. Thinking of you, as well.
Kudos to the triumphant, hugs for the worried or desperate, welcome to the new chums.
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas2 -
Gloria- thanks for your concern. My shoulder is back to normal. I'm babying it still because it is a little touchy. I am still working out though just not posting. I have just been a lot busier than normal. We are still working on our remodel of our bathroom. We also celebrate Christmas this coming weekend and I have been getting ready for that. We rent a hotel suite with a living room area and we decorate it. I hope to be back to normal... hopefully by the first of the year! I still am taking medication for the Lymes and will be rechecked for that in February. It is a hard disease to fight because it goes into all of the different body systems and goes dormant as well as mutates. Stay warm! It has been single digits here!
Mary from Minnesota1 -
Just back from a 3.75 mile run with my black labbie. Perfect conditions at the cross country ski resort and, at this time of year, can never count on that.
lhannon-You crack me up! I had a hysterectomy about 12 years ago. I remember reading forums and told to be prepared to "mourn the loss" of my uteris. I was so happy to get rid of that! There was no mourning for me! I hope you get the insomnia sorted out, that really just plain suck.
Mary - Hi there! Nice to meet you!
