Got up and walked this morning inside since it was 17 degrees. As I was walking, the electricity went off!! Our house is all electric so that is a problem. Decided the best thing to do was keep walking. It took them almost two hours to get it going again. I didn't walk two hours tho.
Charleen - your quilt is awesome. My favorite thing at the State Fair of TX is the quilt show.
Been decluttering my house and beginning to make progress. As long as the cold weathers hold out, will keep decluttering. Not sure what to do with old electronics that we don't use anymore.
Better go fix dinner as we just snacked on zhouda chees and apples for lunch.

Hi. I am Cat from VA near DC sitting at the keyboard in 20 degree weather. Like some others I have been active in MFP before and lost 10 pounds last year but did not keep it up and gained half back. I have enjoyed reading some of the above threads and learning about you all and thought I would join in. I am 56 working and have a great boyfriend who is on a better eating path with me. My goal is to keep my renewed commitment to the gym that I started 27 December cardio and weight training and strive to keep to 1400 cal. / day. I want an overall healthier lifestyle. I know I am the only one who can do it for myself. I like to play 9 holes of golf with a cart. I have some physical limitations (plantar fasciitis for one thing that causes arch pain walking and standing) but found I can do some of the cardio machines at the gym like the elliptical machine, arc trainer and stationary bike to burn calories. I am looking forward to traveling this journey with you great gals.5

Just started today- I've got 35 lbs to lose - first day total disaster- travelling to London so service station food and hotel food- thinking I chose the wrong day! Going to try again tomorrow and join a weight loss club too (next Friday). Want to lose the weight for December '17 which is when Im sixty - looking to look fab at 605

Mary - I'm stayin' as warm as a bug in a rug! Got lots of blankets for my bed and warm clothes.
Well, I will be posting just my name and no location (long story) for a while for security reasons so I can remain safe. Hope you all don't mind.
Lots of love

I started fitness pal in Oct 2012 after starting to gain weight again. Logged in at 217 lbs after gaining weight from depressing job. Didn't stick too it, got more depressed within a year I was 328 lbs where basically am now, again. I'm 56 years old just got laid off for a 3rd time since 2007. Life has been ever changing and gets worse each new job including less $. I've gone from $60,000 year to now where can't pay bills without giving plasma 2x week which I hate.
I got to 270 in my 20's but decided that was it after seeing picture. I started using my weight machine again and walking several miles daily jogged some. When I was in my 30's and 40's got obsessed with working out and eating perfectly. I don't drink much and not a coffee tea or soda drinker so tyat is blessing for me. When I was 46 my sister asked me if wanted to Motorola marathon in Austin in s few months. Not much of a runner but said yes. I then got hooked and running also. I completed the marathon.
So here I am again after a horrible 10 years. Miserable and feeling negative about life in general. That can do optimistic woman is gone. I'm a Christian but don't feel God loves me but I still love him. I need help and support. I'm going to attempt this and hopefully this forum can help me. I'm stuck and don't know why or what to do. Normally I just decide to do something and it's done. Not anymore.
Goals;
Logging food and activity and be honest about it
Eat 80% clean or more (I'm poor and can't buy food right now so eatting is only when I get it and since can't afford food my calories are like 500 and less daily so excercise isn't always option)
Even if don't feel it tell my self happy positive things
Excercise at least 30 min 5x week (depends on good intake again if I have any energy, dizziness etc)
Do more intense excercise give it 100% not 50%
Get rid of all or nothing attitude
Work on accepting self as am
Reach out more in forums
My goal for the last 4 years is do another 1/2 marathon and then a marathon. I'd like to get too the place where I want to set those goals again
Thank you for listening5 -
Allie - yep! I'm here, I made it back!

Are you kidding me?????!!!!! I just spent an hour typing in an intro and a bit about what I've been up to since August and the whole thing just disappeared. Nope. Sorry. Not doing it again today. I'll try again tomorrow.

Mia - I've had that happen soooo many times but I finally figured out what was doing it...I use this forum on my tablet and every time I set it down when I was posting it would rotate the screen and my post would be gone!! So now I've got my screen pinned into the portrait position and don't have that problem anymore.

I just ruined two pounds of haddock ... won't go into the sad details ...
Marni ... yes, I know where the Asa Ransom House is. There were several areas hit with a dumping of snow in a short period of time Thursday afternoon into Friday. While it caused a lot of uproar, the children were better staying at their schools than being stuck on the roads. I barely made it home from an appointment just a couple of hours before the children in the area were done with school. Plows couldn't keep up so it was like driving through 2 feet of snow in your front yard ... treacherous!

(((Sherry))) to staying safe. Glad you can come here to stay in touch.
ljakubowsky great goals. I think this forum is very supportive. We try to be respectful. It is hard to always hear the intention when others respond because we are not talking face to face. Just know those who are here only mean you the best and want you to succeed. Whatever forums work for you make sure to click on the star by the title of the forum, This bookmarks it and makes it easier to find it again.

Sherry - so wonderful to "see" you! Which app do you have?
canookie - love the cartoon. Where do you get such cute ones?

Lenora - maybe there is no such thing as global warming??????
went to church tonight to lector. I was really surprised that they hadn't done a single thing to the parking lot. I left early and by the time I left what was slush was starting to freeze over.
Joyce - I'm going to mention the TENS unit to my friend. I know I've told you about her, she's the lady who is real overweight, she really needs to lose weight to get her knees replaced but I don't see her trying at all. Her diet! Now she's in terrible pain and can't exercise (or won't)
Sue in TX - oh no! No electricity! Meaning no heat, can't cook, nothing. That's rough. Glad it's back on now
Cat - welcome! My daughter lives in Reston
Welcome everyone else new

Sherry, we will hug you and welcome you in whatever form you feel comfortable to be here. Big hugs to you.
Michele, the TENS unit I have is the the Aleve one. I think Icy Hot has one but I don't know how it works. I just put the unit on my spine where it hurts then use the remote and turn it on. I keep the remote in my pocket. I put it on a 30 minute cycle and it can be used every 30 minutes. I have been able to use these same pads for 5 days now which will keep the cost down for me.
ljakubowsky, you mentioned using the forums more. I'm not sure if you meant the MFP forums or forums in general. Most of the women here, including me, have found that a lot of the other forums here on MFP can get pretty ugly and nonsupportive.
Joyce, Indiana2 -
Mary, that must have been it! OK, won't make that mistake again.
I made an old favorite for dinner tonight -- a Cuban comfort food -- and discovered something fabulous. Mfp will import any recipe from the web, match the ingredients (you might have to make a couple of substitutions) and file it under your "Recipes"!! I think that's amazing -- so much easier than typing in each ingredient for things that you make often (and that you can find a recipe for). Anyway, I thought I would share this dish with you. I love it, it's really easy to make, and not that calorie dense. Also, hearty and warming for the winter. It's called "Picadillo", which is pronounced pick-ah-DEE-yo. It's basically a spiced ground meat hash, served with rice. I serve it with brown rice. You can see the recipe if you google "picadillo" and see the NY Times (go figure) recipe...it's the one I like best. I am married to a Cuban, whose mother was a wonderful cook. This recipe makes picadillo like Mima used to make! If you make it, let me know how you like it! (Btw, he doesn't like raisins, so I put craisins in )5 -

That's one of the reasons I quit a long time ago0 -
I spent the past couple days reading "Year of No Sugar" and watching YouTube videos featuring Dr. Robert Lustig from U Cal "Sugar: The Bitter Truth." WOW.
I always knew sugar was bad...and had been taught the carbs in general were bad so tried to keep as many simple carbs out of my diet...unless there was a plate of cookies, bag of Hallowe'en Candy, Ice Cream, Pastries.... one was never enough and I'd eat to bursting, mainly in the evening. Every evening.
I now understand much better why, a couple years ago, I started to relax my attitude about sugar - added simple carbs and consequently put on 10 lbs around my middle and cannot seem to stop the binging. This was while struggling with Weight Watchers - which I do credit for the weight gain not being worse.
Anyhow, I will start on this journey again and do what I can to limit the added sugars as mentioned above. He said the sugars in fruits and veggies are OK since they have the fiber to offset the Metabolic Syndrome. I don't drink pop and only put milk in my coffee, and love strong black tea.
I'm going to use the MFP logging to keep track of the sugar, but not get worried about the calories. I love to eat eggs, avocados, nuts so get high quality protein and healthy fats.
Also, I can't toss out the scale but will not weigh in more than once a month. The WW "weigh-ins" derailed me more than once and I refuse let the scale have that much power.
On another note, we aren't thawed out yet but it's warmer and starting to snow.
Rita, I hope you are feeling better. I don't blame you for being anxious about your job/disability situation. All I can offer is find things that bring you joy right now, right this minute, even if it's just shutting your eyes for a bit and counting your breaths in and out.
Love the puppy pictures. I'm posting one of Sophie when she was a pup with her kitty friend Ellie. They still play and are good buddies.
I've changed my profile pic - my hair is longer now. Have a good night! I wish you all successful journeys!

Good evening Ladies...I'm back! Hope you remember me.
I got so busy I just didn't have time to post or keep up with you all. It took me a couple of weeks to catch up with you all, but I did it. I am so sorry for those of you struggling with illness, loss of loved ones and life's challenges. Kudos to those who have achieved successes. Welcome Newbies, this is such an awesome group of ladies.
I went off the rails for the past couple of months, half heartedly trying to maintain my weight. I found it so difficult to follow my former healthy routine of eating healthy and daily exercise. I blamed it on my new, very long work, hours, but in the end it was just an excuse. I noticed my clothes were becoming tight, so I sat myself down and had a frank talk with myself and decided I had to buckle down before I was forced to buy bigger clothes. I had avoided the scale since October, as if I didn't know the number it wouldn't be so bad. This morning I bit the bullet and got on, I have gained almost 6 lbs. since then and am almost 9 lbs. over my goal and 11 lbs. from my lowest 2 years ago when I hit my goal. Not too bad in the overall scheme of things but I need to get back on track before things get really out of hand. I lose very slowly so it will probably take me about 3 months to take it off. I began logging again last week and tried to do some exercise at least 5 times/week. My hips hurt so much in the morning that I can't roll over in bed, this is new and very distressing. I used to do the elliptical for at least 20-30 minutes every day and stronglifts and/or kettle bell. I now struggle with 15 minutes of elliptical and about 3-4 minutes of kettle bell. I'm hoping to strengthen my body in order to do more, but don't want to push it now for fear of making my hip pain worse.I used to to walk 10,000 steps per day easily but now with an extremely sedentary job struggle to get above 5,000. But I'm giving it my best effort, no more excuses, just solutions.
My bio: I turned 60 last summer, my profile picture was taken on my 60th birthday and I was so proud of what I had accomplished. When I began this quest 852 days ago, 191 lbs. were sitting on my 5"3-3/4" frame. I was never thin, more curvy, but the weight really got out of hand in my 40's amd well into my 50's. I made attempts to lose but gave up quickly and blamed it on getting older. I had become convinced that no matter what I did I was destined to be overweight. I was miserable both physically and mentally. I never looked at myself in a full length mirror and clothes shopping, which I once loved became an exercise of misery. Something in me snapped and I buckled down, one new good habit at a time. First I began exercising, using a Fitbit as motivation. I then discovered that I had been sabotaging my prior weight loss attempts by eating low fat so I began a high protein, high fat, low carb diet. This kept me full and within my calorie allotment. I cut down on sugar, my nemesis, and found the cravings stopped. It took me about 15 months but I lost 45 lbs. (my goal was 43) and I went from a size 14/16 to size 8 (my goal was size 10). I felt fantastic both mentally and physically. I ate up the compliments (instead of the sweets) from friends and gained confidence I never knew I had. I ate very well, enjoyed my food and didn't really feel deprived. As I got smaller and needed new clothes I discovered thrift shops to buy smaller clothes. It was very motivating to buy smaller sizes and spend very little money on designer clothing. I wasn't hiding in clothes that were too big, but celebrating my successes, and enjoying clothes shopping again (a form of exercise).
Was it easy? No, I had my struggles, weight gains, plateaus and occasional binges (one night an entire bag of M&M's). Going out to eat was a big challenge for me, I love wine or a drink when I go out. But I had my friends here, with similar struggles to help and encourage me. They would pick me up when I fell and cheer when I was celebrating. I missed them and need them so I am back.
Enough for now, I could go on and on, I have 3 months of posting wanting to come out of my fingers! I'll check back in soon.
Love to all,
Chris in very snowy MA7 -
Marnie: You may not have the best weiner dog mushing team in Alaska, but they've got to be the cutest. I love Alaska. Have been five times: Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali, Sitka, Juneau and waaaaay out west to Bethel. Jaw-dropping beauty, and I'm speaking as someone who used to live in Hawaii.
Sherry: Good to see you again. How's Missy?
Joyce: Fervently hoping you find a lasting resolution to your pain. You deserve to feel well
Warm thoughts going out to all of you who are feeling the deep freeze. Remember than being in the cold burns calories...your body works hard trying to generate warmth. It's what I kept repeating to myself walking the two blocks to the condo gym this AM. Temperature was an even ZERO.
Stay well friends. We can do this.

Hey now...
Michele - hi sweetie! I've been using SparkPeople's app....I find it more accurate for calories consumed and for calories out in exercise, and the food tracking tracks a lot more nutrients than MFP. The foods database isn't as big but it allows you to add foods to the database and they have companion apps for nutrient info for a large assortment of most foods as well as veggies and fruits nutrients. Plus they have companion apps for crock pot recipes, fast recipes and other recipes and all the apps sync with their respective websites so you can use either the site or the app. Plus you can earn Spark points for little virtual goodies you can give yourself or friends as encouragement and rewards. Plus they have forums, challenges and what they call SparkStreaks that track your goals and you can earn little virtual trophies for maintaining your goals, etc. It's an awesome program and I really like it. Plus you can sync fitbits, jawbones, garmins etc to it. So that's what I've been using.
Pip - I only fell off the non-smoking wagon because I'm under an immense amount of stress as I am now a domestic violence victim who is now homeless and penniless. It's a long story but I plan to quit again once I get into permanent housing instead of a DV shelter and don't have so much stress. For now it helps calm me and helps me maintain a decent attitude. And I'm not smoking near as much as I did before I quit. I only have a few a day.
Joyce - thanks hun, I've missed you all greatly.
Margaret - thanks for the hugs dear!
Remind me sometime and I will tell you all what has been happening. It's a long story but will try to keep the post short as I can.
Anyway, it's dinner time so I'm gonna step away from my screen for a bit.
Love you all

Lisa in West Tx Thank you for the encouraging words. Just to be clear I’m an expat American. I married an Oz and have lived here for 27 years. I have two dual citizen sons who have cute Aussie accents tho.
Lenora Thanks for the advice on how to answer everyone. It took me a while to figure it out. Also I’m not near a computer all the time but I plan to get the hang of it. Thanks for the heads up on appropriate subject matter for the group. I probably would have been ok but its nice to have a clear guide. I’m sorry about your sisters and mum. It’s a tough gig. I am much more comfortable about my cancer than I was with my son’s as I’m sure you can imagine. I do feel for my husband tho. It’s hard for him to see his family members go through this. Luckily he’s a selfless fellow.
Margaretturk Thank you for the prayers. I know from my son’s experience prayers and positive thoughts and energy really do make a difference.
Katia in Beautiful NW Oregon Thank you for the welcome and the well wishes.
SueBDew in Tx Thank you for your best wishes.
Re in Tx Its good to know there’s no agro here. My philosophy is eat more nutritious foods more often and less nutritious foods less often. Because I have an active social life I eat at maintenance on the weekends (I am currently eating at maintenance and extra protein for health reasons). I have a Mediterranean background so my natural/cultural diet was fairly healthy to begin with. I just ate too much and my weight accumulated over 20 years. I do limit refined carbs and fried foods. I still have these on occasion and would never think of giving up bread or desserts I just don’t eat them daily like I used to. I’m 20 lbs from goal and will continue the healthful diet through my treatment though I won’t focus on losing.
I am grateful. Cancer isn’t nice but the care here is tremendous and it was detected early enough there is an excellent chance I will survive it. I plan to put it behind me like my son has with his. I will be treated in the public system so it won’t cost me anything outside of our normal contribution. It won’t impact my family’s lifestyle whatsoever. That is comforting.
Michele in NC Thank you I feel I have found a great place to share. I appreciate your empathy.
Jana in VA Thank you for your encouragement. I try to be strong. The only time I was shaky was when I didn’t know how far the cancer had spread and there was a chance it was metastatic. It wasn’t so I can see more clearly where my path is taking me and it has an end to treatment unlike so many others. I went camping for 8 days with my husband just 8 days post surgery so I know my body is ready for whatever lies ahead. I feel so much of the recovery from cancer is mental. I have a very good role model in my son who was only 13 when he was diagnosed with a rare blood vessel cancer that showed up in his brain. He had a stroke, brain surgery, another stroke and more surgery then radiotherapy to get it under control. He has zero deficit with regards to function and during the whole ordeal he remained positive and un-phased. Today he is a researcher and specializes in quantification of fish populations so it goes to show that we can overcome so much.
Sharon in Lethbridge Thank you for the prayers.
Canookie Thank you for the welcome and your concern. I do have a very supportive loving family of which I am truly grateful. I am also a doxie lover. The pics are:
Ludwig; Rosie and Buddha; Buddha; Eric, Holly, Alex Buddha; Bridie
Ludwig made to within a month of his 17th birthday. Rosie and Holly made it to 13. Buddha and Bridie are still with us. Buddha is 13 in February and Bridie is 10. Buddha, Holly and Bridie are rescued dogs from breeders. They have had good lives but came to us for better care for their twilight years. We have a great organisation called Dachshund Rescue here that helped with placing them with us.

Hi all!
Welcome to the newest ladies. This thread can be such a help in your journey.
Christy - so sorry about your diagnosis. It sounds like you are taking charge of the things you can control.
Pip - Sing "Happy Birthday" to Yogi for me!
Someone said something about Springer Spanials. My family had Springers when I was young. My uncle bred them and we got puppies from him. They are wonderful dogs.
Lisa -Good to have a good "hoper" around. I think hope or the lack of it is at the center of what motivates many us in this one day at a time journey.
Michelle - I love what you posted about exercise! So true.
Katie - Congrats of 4 lbs down!
Sherry - Welcome back!
Marni - I am so fascinated by your African Gray parrot. I have a parrot story I'll share another time.
Must run and cook for the hubs.

Sherry, I'm glad to see you here with us again and sorry to hear that there have been more troubles in your life. I use Spark People for a lot of the gimmicks but prefer the food and exercise tracking on MFP.
Chris in MA, it's good to see you again. Keep coming back.
On my out of town adventure, one of the people I saw was a young woman that I hadn't seen since March. When I saw her last, she was heavy and talked to me about her new eating and exercise plan. When I saw her last night, she was amazingly thin and gorgeous and inspired me to tackle the two pounds that are still lingering from my low exercise time after surgery. It is so great to see someone face to face who has actually stayed with a healthy plan and had success.
Unfortunately my inspiration got derailed at Red Lobster where I succumbed to the lure of cheddar biscuits. The good news is that I went for a walk when I got home so at least I have 12.000 steps to keep my walking streak alive. Back to my real motivated world. I have a date to meet friends for walking at 8 AM tomorrow.

lacruiser2016 – If you attempted to go ‘back a page’ without saving (or posting) your remarks on this page … you will lose your post (every time). It took me losing several posts until someone told me that they would open up a word processing program and put it side-by-side to the opened MFP community page and type their responses there, then 'cut' and 'paste' them to the box at the end of all postings. Even then, I find that ‘if’ it is a long post; I find that sometimes trying to 'paste it' won’t take. What I do then, is copy it back to the WPP page and wait a few moments and try it again. I do not close out my WPP page, until I know that my post has been accepted by MFP. Usually it works the next time. I think it is because so many are posting at the same time. This is a ‘huge’ thread. I don’t know how it would, if it would, work on an iPad. I use a laptop or my desktop. I don’t own an iPad or any other type of ‘new’ electronic.
Great about your 4lb loss! You're right - it probably will not continue; but, losing a pound to a pound-and-a-half a week is probably much safer and more likely that your weight loss will be more permanent. It is important that you keep up with what passes your lips … meals, drinks, snack, and licks and spoonsful during cooking. Keep on tracking and a lot of us envy you for living in much warmer climate (Florida). That is where my DH and I ‘thought’ one day we would retire and live. But, we are ‘out in the country’ and Florida and Louisiana are our vacation spots. My middle sister lives in Miami and has for the past 35 years and wouldn’t move any further north than Satellite Beach if she was paid to do so. Oldest sister lives in Peachtree City, GA and really wants her to move up there. DMS tell her 'you're crazy'!!!!!
Joyce – That’s funny about what Indiana considers a ‘snow day’. My niece lived out in Colorado (near Denver) and she thought the first time it ‘snowed’ (a few inches) that the kids would be ‘out of school’; her neighbor (who took the kids to school) told her not so. When it snowed 5 inches, still no ‘snow day’. Come about 10”, no ‘snow day’. One morning the neighbor called and it was like a ‘blizzard’ conditions and she said, “Now THIS is a ‘snow day’. Niece would NOT drive in the snow, at all. She’d be more likely to ‘walk the kids to school’; but, once it snowed, her car stayed in the garage and she stayed in the house. First time they went skiing, she broke her leg and ended up watching her family from the lodge, reading a book in front of a 'roaring' fire. Her DH would call her whenever they were about to 'ski down the hill’.
ljakubowsky – God ALWAYS loves us … we are HIS children. I joined the church at the age of 8-years-old (because friends were doing so and my mother pushed me) and had no idea what I was doing. I did not become a Christian until 2 days before my 60th birthday. Nobody can ‘preach’ you into salvation … that is something one comes to on their own timing. GOD is ALWAYS there, for you and others and it does not matter what name you call your God either. Just don’t ever ‘damn’ Him … you will only be doing that to yourself. Don’t ever ‘damn’ anyone … because you will be doing it to yourself. When you have bad thoughts about someone, write something positive about them in a journal … even ‘if’ it is the exact same thing every time.
I have printed the NY Times recipe for Picadillo and will try cooking it … it sounds wonderful!

Beautiful babies - thanks for sharing! Even with some of their inherent issues (skeletal and spine problems, bad teeth, the barking, difficult to house train) they have such unique personalities. Sorry for those who are passed, and so happy you made room in your heart for more.
I'm a foster failure. Our eldest Eddy-Spaghetti is from the Canadian Dachshund Rescue, I volunteered with. I wound up adopting him and his bonded brother Snowy (who passed from a heart attack 2 yrs later). This is his FB greeting for other old weenies.
My three young ones are just 2+ yrs old.
My red short haired girl Ruby May is from the Alaska Animal Rescue & Friends. Her mum was dumped at the rescue after her human passed away and the family wanted nothing to do with her pups. She was born the week my mum passed away and it just seemed like fate was bringing us together.
TyTy was picked up from a reputable breeder in Washington (and flown to Alaska), as a playmate for Ruby. Mali Summer was the runt from a litter by a local home breeder & foster/rescue home.
Thanks for sharing your sweet fur-kids!
